I started medical billing course with AAPC back in 2020 and never finished it. They didn't offer virtual classes during Covid. You are pretty much on your own. I had no one to guide me. If you don't know medical terminology and anatomy you will have a hard time. The customer rep I spoke to told me the course was easy when it isn't. I couldve saved my money which was over $2000.
What Lina said is true, but if you study on a consistent schedule and utilize YT videos for Terminology/Anatomy to fill gaps, it's definitely doable. I passed on my first attempt after working for 6 months. I would study M-F from 4-8 and then for 4-6 hours on Saturdays. I was VERY busy. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to stick with it.

I took a program through my local community college a couple years ago. I did not receive help finding a job and applied to many places over 6 months with no luck. I lost my confidence and did not take the certification exam. My teacher had said it would be better to get a job and get experience before taking the exam but it never worked out for me. I am going to try to get back into again. I had a lot of fun investigating codes
I just finished my course thru Ed2Go. Med Term was included in the package, so I took that (all self-paced with an instructor available for help) and books were included in tuition. After that (about 3mos), I moved onto the billing & coding portion. My course included a 1yr AAPC membership and a voucher for your chosen certification. Total cost was around 3.5k. Overall I feel like my program was OK. Hindsight is 20/20 though, if I could go back I'd take a course straight from AAPC.

What do you recommend to someone like me.
I’ve been working in medical billing and coding for 10 years. I want to get a certificate that would pay me more.
Do you recommend the US Career Institute?
No real experience or opinion to provide on their program other than I've known no successful coders that went through their program.
@@ContempoCodingso which programs have they gone through?
How do you feel about Ultimate Medical Academy?
I don't have any insight or opinion on their program.
I just started my certification program at Loma linda university health. It’s 15 months long. All online.
That seems like a long time! Is it JUST coding, or Health Information???
@@ContempoCoding it’s just coding. I did notice some “filler” classes but I’m also an employee so i get a great discount.
How about NHA (National Healthcareer Association) you qualify to take exam by having done a course or having experience of 2 years in billing. What’s your thoughts
NHA credentials are not accepted by most employers.
Really?!?! 😢oh no, I paid for the exam and study guide already. I found out about them from a Job agency here in Georgia. They told me they were accredited in all 50 states. Back by NCC 😢
I started this because I’ve been working in healthcare for 20+ years. I’ve been getting experience in billing and coding for the last 4. Any advice?
Thanks for reaching out. As you can imagine, I get many requests for advice so I do charge for my time and expertise. You can pay for and schedule a session here: contempocoding.as.me/
@@ContempoCoding thanks.
What do you think about Martinsburg Colleges Medical Coding and Billing program?
Have anyone took their classes through Andrews School or AMCI?
Does any of this apply in California?
Are you still associated with KODE health? I don't see them in the description and there seems to be some controversy brewing around them...
I am and I keep in touch with them regularly. I don't participate in online forums or groups because I don't have the mental bandwidth for all the drama.
@@ContempoCoding thank you for the update! I want to see them succeed as well. It's a great idea but I guess it just needs to be adopted by more practices....
What about medcerts? Or Is it better to go through a college?
Medcerts is a pretty good program but I really think you should look into Preppy.
My daughter and I just started with Penn Foster. Right now I’m incredibly frustrated as they are making start with basic math, basic English and basic computer classes!!! I’m really just frustrated because this is a waste of time! These classes are unnecessary and people should be allowed to test out of these courses!
Omg how I wish this video was available when I decided to get into medical coding at the beginning of the year. I just spent $10,000 on a 10 months certificate from a University and they didn't even teach us any billing. And there is no externship involved. I just checked out Preppy, it's so much better and cheaper! I went with this school because it's a University. I figured I was getting quality, but nope....
I think I know what school you are referring to. Lol
@@sailor_virgo879 I hope it isn't in a warm state near the Keys....? Please let me know if it is.
@@UniqueBuggieshave you done research on the university you’re going to? It should have all the things they speak on in their videos or at least be a way to know what all they include ?
Do you recommend Penn Foster?
While I cannot provide a direct recommendation or comparison as I have no personal experience with their program, I appreciate your interest in exploring different educational options. I strive to provide information and resources that align with my own experiences and knowledge. I personally recommend Preppy's medical coding program, as I have found it to be a valuable resource for my subscribers. It's important to research and consider various programs to find the one that best suits your individual needs and goals. Wishing you the best of luck in your medical coding journey!
Is there any information or statistics about pass/ success rates for the CPC exam for those students who took Preppy?

Yeah… I went through Miller Motte. They really screwed me!
Never even heard of it.
Does the preppy class give you cpc?
It prepares you for the CPC. The only way to become a CPC is to take a proctored exam administered by the AAPC.
@@ContempoCoding yes sorry I should have worded my question better. In comparison to AAPC offered course , do you think preppy prepares better? I noticed AAPC has that extra practice at the end (I can’t remember what it’s called rn).. will the hours for that count towards getting the -A removed ? Do you always need a letter of recommendation no matter what?
I’m taking my exam tomorrow I’m worried about what we can write in our books to better explain am I allowed to write HIPAA fact in my books ?
"Handwritten notes are acceptable in the coding books only if they pertain to daily coding activities. Questions from the Study Guides, Practice Exams or the Exam itself are prohibited. Tabs may be inserted, taped, pasted, glued, or stapled in the manuals so long as the obvious intent of the tab is to earmark a page with words or numbers, not supplement information in the book. Altering, whiting out, painting, or printing over any pages within the code books (e.g., marketing pages, table of contents, reference pages, etc.) to supplement information is prohibited.
No materials (other than tab dividers) may be inserted, taped, pasted, glued, or stapled in the manuals."

I'm pretty sure mine is not
What do you think about CareerStep?

Question - I know the new ICD-10 started October 1st but if we have not taken the exam yet but plan to within the next few weeks (prior to 2023) do I need to get the new book to take the exam? I thought I saw for the testing on the CPC in 2022 that the new guidelines would not take place (or meaning the test won’t change) if planning to take the exam before the start of 2023
The exam does not change until January 1. You are not permitted to use the 2023 books until examinations on and after January 1, 2023.
What do you thing about clinical documented improvement course is it useful for medical coder ?
If you want to work with closely with providers and/or do CDI, yes.
I plan on doing preppy ❤
What are your thoughts on the program through Penn Foster?
@@jac_franc for me it was definitely the payment plan for preppy And when you finish your school you get the xternship also I’m not sure does penn foster offer you a laptop that was a perk too for preppy definitely worth watching the master class very insightful.
@@ashleysullivan8257 Thank you. I have watched the masterclass video. Mostly I was referring to the curriculum. Penn Foster vs. Preppy
I just did it through AAPC. Almost done…sort of…
That's exciting! Did you make it through the dreaded E&M chapter yet? 😨
@@ContempoCoding I need to check 😂 so far I know I’ve done anatomy and medical terminology. The guideline chapter where it hones in on guidelines 1-10 was uhhh a bit much
I always heard that Andrews is the best for medical coding.
Have you heard of PennFoster?? Any thoughts? It's full online
