Hey Birdo Gang! Thank you so much for watching! All Holden Day video will be out next Sunday. Next Sunday will be at Sydney Motorsport Park for Shannon’s Sydney Classic event!
Thanks for the heads up as to upcoming events. A lot of us only know about these shows after they're shown on your channel. Try and make it a thing. 🤠👍
yes you say that something is cactus without following it with the noun i.e. you don't say that is a cactus car (although you would be understood), you just say the car is cactus meaning it has had it or does not work properly
6:06 I think that's a Mitstubish Galant... The wagon version was called Legnum... Early Galants were made here in Australia under the Chrysler badge, but that was in dying days of Chrysler Australia... Not sure if the wagon was sold here...
Hey Wastie Birdo. 4:09, look closer, that hood ornament is actually an L (for LTD). Since you mention our car cultures being so similar, particularly last century, 60s/70s, there's one main difference. What you call, in the states, a compact, (Falcon, Valiant etc) we called a full size, or large family car. What you guys called a full size family car, (Galaxie, Impala etc) we called a BIG gas guzzler, mostly for the gluttonous. 6:07 Mitsubishi Legnum would be a grey import. Not sold new in Aust.
0:14 Fiat Freemont, a rebadged Dodge Journey/JCUV. 0:37 The Citroen Cactus also has the rubber cushioning pads on the sides so the body doesn't get scratched or dented if a shopping trolley/cart hit it. 1:04 This is the 1967 Mazda Familia 1200. 3:03 I definitely agree that Aussie cars should be more appreciated on the world stage. In terms of video games, Forza has done a pretty good job getting Aussie cars to a wide international audience. 4:32 That is a 1980s Excalibur Phaeton, a car styled after the 1928 Mercedes-Benz SSK. 6:00 That is a Mitsubishi Legnum, a wagon variant of the Mitsubishi Galant VR-4. 7:02 The 2000 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI Tommi Mäkinen Edition (TME), made to commemorate Tommi Mäkinen’s four world rally championships. 9:26 That's a Honda Acty, a small kei truck (keitora).
These videos are great. I live in Europe but I have lived in Australia before and love the Fords, Holden, Chryslers. Especially XC Cobra and the Chargers. Also love American cars. When it comes to muscle cars, utes, pickups, four wheel drives, vans, v8s, and straight roads that go for miles, then Europeans just dont know what they are missing.
At 1:03 you were close with the Mazda RX1. The first volume selling Mazda Rotary was the coupe version of this fitted with an early rotary . The Mazda R100. Worth looking it up. Ran a Bathurst in 1969 very reliably. More detail in episode 81 of a very informative series about Australian cars
Westconnex saves hundreds of thousands of people millions of minutes a day. I would argue westconnex saves thousands of lifetimes per year. Something to be happy about while underground.
0:14 Yes I believe it is... (Just did a search and it's a Dodge Journey), taking a journey through life lol We do live in a strage alternate world lol where After Fiat went into partnership to save each other lol Even the Cadillac 300 was sold under the Lancia badge for instance (All Italians brand are under Fiat umbrella and not to mention stellantis)...
Arguably New Zealand has a greater variety of cars than Australia, because in addition to getting all of the Australian built cars and probably most of the same European /American models as Australia, NZ has imported used JDM cars from Japan continuously since the late 80s.
The Ford LTD at 4:02. Clever of Ford to make the Falcon into the much bigger looking and prestigious LTD at minimum cost. Long wheelbase from the station wagon floor pan, new grilles and badging, biggest motor, the high end interior and the highest pricing. All using most of the parts from the Falcon next to it. Ford started that around 1972 after the similar ideas of the local Ford Fairlane starting in 1967 worked well. So Ford added more of what worked well. So we'll that one Prime Minister found some political advantage of dumping the previous voted out PM car of a top of the range Mercedes Benz and replacing that by local Ford LTDs in the government fleet. Extra incentive to the local LTD was when the previous use of locally assembled full size US LTD got too expensive and complicated. Declining sales of local versions of full size US cars as the sixties progressed. Richer people going more high end European. The local LTD answer to those issues was much more profitable for Ford apart from the sister Landau personal luxury vehicle the top US manager here was convinced would sell well. Like personal luxury cars did in the US. Ignored his local staff advice about the Landau based on their previous experience. Ford Landau a sought after car now but not so much when new.
The channel isnt growing at a rate anywhere near the effort and costs im sure its taking for you guys to travel to all these shows which you're surely going to run out of. Multiple other channels are gaining so much viewership using 'American Reacts To Australian...." template. Maybe between car shows, Wasteland should put out reaction videos of iconic Aussie motorsport moments and other cultural related videos, it is low effort and possible high reward.
True, although Wastie actually currently lives in Australia and gave a lot of appreciation for Aussie cars. It's more than just reacting from a different country when you are there witnessing the cars with your very own eyes.

I'm sure you would enjoy the 'Festival of the Unexceptional'; in the UK It is for cars which are not exceptional. Not shiny. Not with whacky paint schemes. Bare-ass standard spec. Not fast. Not powerful. Just ordinary. Come over and have a look.

Citroen Cactus would not be a popular choice in Australia because "cactus" means broken in Aussie slang. 😂
I didn’t know that!

The smile on your face driving the Maloo was priceless 😅👌
You ticked a box driving the yellow Maloo.......... now good vibes will stay with you !
Love that big ear to ear smile on your face when you were driving that Maloo.
Today's Wastland Firebird episode proudly sponsored by WestConnex 🤣

My sister used to have a Fiat Freemont. It’s a rebadged Dodge Journey which Australia also got for a while.

thanks for the vid, but a word of advice, I would remove that chain from your pocket, paint can cost as much as the vehicle itself
Oh, I am quite careful with it. I have cars of my own, too!
Thanks
THANK YOU!

Subvert the dominant paradigm. Before I acquired motorcycle consciousness, My first (and only) car was a Rotary Mazda RX2. I was 16 and change.
The west connects tunnel is a portal to another dimension. 🤯
Worst dimension ever

I believe that was an "L" not an "I" on that Ford Ltd.... :-)
Will have to go there one day. looks like a big show. Sorry i missed the prem damn it.
What a perfect event

I love a good night with Behemoth.
Why does Jimmy the Jimny sound like a diesel powered ' PRIME MOVER ' at light throttle ?
We’re checking in with the mechanic to make sure it’s only the tyres making noise.
Yeah those off-road tyres have now damaged the differential. Ooops.

I can assure you:- we bought plenty of new Japanese cars during that period.
I don't feel as if we missed out, somehow.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
We will visit NZ at some point, and find out for ourselves!

Holden extended the Kingswood in '67 to make the Brougham
Love the yellow maloo ute 😊

Australian Legend.. Robbie Madison.. visited my Neighbor..
Driving a Maloo.. Number Plate. Maloo1.. And the Family in a R8 Wagon..
big ups to the bloke who let you drive his 200k Maloo
Always amazes me that Americans don't know much about Commodores when until a generation or two ago the Camaro had a Commodore chassis
rumour has it west connex does lead to hell
Check out the video of a Maloo at the Nurburgring track...that will whet your appetite even more. 🤠

Oh no! We’ll be stuck there for hours! 🤣
