I worked as a statistician for several insurance companies and Marc Andreesen the General Partner at A16H could not possibly be less informed about the state of healthcare in the USA right now. The class warfare is a lie, which is always has been, but the USA healthcare system has been completely corrupted by the government and insurance. Marc honestly needs to go get 3 doctors drunk, and get them to talk about insurance. They will refuse at first, but you need to get them to open up, and they super super hate the insurance companies for turning their health care into dollars and manipulating and controlling them. After talking to 3 doctors who will inform you that the system is screwed up, go get 3 actuaries or statisticians drunk, and they will explain the corruption of how it works.

@@sojourner99because just like the insurance companies don’t like paying us, they don’t like paying the doctors either. They strong arm the doctors/hospitals into contracts with low pay so the doctors can be “in network.” “In Network” just means the doctors accepted the shitty deal the insurance companies offered them.
So, the doctors raise prices and those without coverage or out of network are were the hospitals make their profit.
If it were doctors being greedy, we wouldn’t have an issue in this country with bankrupt hospitals. We see what doctors bill insurance companies. What we don’t see if how much the insurance actually pays the doctors and how much they have to just write off.

How can you have a discussion about the cost of Healthcare in America and completely gloss over the fact that it's much cheaper in other countries? He acts like people are too stupid to realize that their taxes would pay for Medicare for all, but that's not the issue! Look at the cost of insulin in Europe vs. America BEFORE INSURANCE. Consider that in the US your insurance is tied to your job, so if you get too sick to work and REALLY need insurance, that's when you lose it. Or the fact that if you're dying, you can't just decide not to have the care; its a NEED and you have to pay whatever they charge. And you can't make informed decisions because there's no way to know what a procedure will cost before you're billed. If they code something wrong, you have no recourse. You can appeal it, but no one is holding these companies accountable. They just deny your appeal. People are literally dying and going bankrupt because of a problem all other developed nations have solved. All this boiled down to, "Nobody wants to pay for it!"
Edit: I want to reiterate that I'm saying Healthcare is cheaper in other countries BEFORE INSURANCE. For instance a vial of insulin in Europe costs $10-40 and in the US costs $275. What does that have to do with taxes? Thanks for reading, this is my first ever rant 💙

Health insurance is literally an unnecessary middle man, so much of the US medical industry is already subsidized by the government.
Our grandparents were taught to get the shotgun for insurance salesman.

      1. Its not cheaper. The systems are still grifty, and the cost is being subsidized by the entire nation. All that does is change where the grift happens.
      2. We don't have "healthcare". We have "sickcare". All of these systems, US or elsewhere, are incentivized to keep people sick, and dependent on their services and pharma.
All we need to fix literally all of this is to allow independent medical providers to exist, meaningfully. NDs have outrageously better outcomes, and yet they are still being fought against by the establishment, for example.

I still spend half my time with a patient encouraging them to make the lifestyle and food choices that will prevent future deterioration, whilst treating what brought them in as well. A song was downloaded online, not a physical product but cost us $1.69 whilst the US paid 70 cents. Do that to everything and now you know how much it costs to run it.

Half of all personal bankruptcies are caused by medical bills. This is not just a simple economic issue that solving a tax table or changing insurance models will easily solve. We have the most expensive medical care in the world and the least effective in terms of life expectancy. We are the most polarized nation economically in the world… The wealthiest, and the lowest life expectancy in terms of our overall wealth because medicine is seen as another for profit industry.
It wasn’t for profit when I was growing up in the 60s. Hospitals are still deemed to be nonprofit and yet with exorbitant amounts of money they make the big ones are able to buy up all the smaller ones that are going bankrupt. We have become a nation where wealthy people don’t begin to pay the taxes they used to during those years. And keep in mind the US economy was thriving in the 50s and the 60s and a good deal of the 70s.
It’s easy to be glib about our current situation. But millions upon millions of people are suffering terribly. They have insurance that they pay huge monthly premiums for and then when they need medical care, they are denied again and again.
The system is a mess and is basically rigged.

These seem like the kind of decisions that bureaucrats make when they make “logical” decisions based on data and the fact that it is protectionist towards pre-existing companies probably doesn’t hurt either.

I could be wrong, but I think it was Yarvin who said America needs to get over its dictator-phobia. All of these guys subscribe to the idea that democracy is inferior. And for them, it is. Their freedom is hindered by laws intended to protect people. Their power is diluted when everyone is given a vote. But I think that stage of the game is over now. They’ve won. What we’re seeing now is the next stage of the game, played amongst themselves to see who gets to sit at the top.

Several people just one degree of separation from the presidency have views that include “women should never have been allowed the vote.” I’m not worried about Trump… I’m worried about Vance’s connection to people like Thiel, Yarvin, and Andressen. While I understand the perspective that there’s a ‘right way’ to react to this situation, it feels both arrogant and narrow-minded to suggest that grief or outrage must conform to a specific moral standard. Reactions to tragedy are deeply personal, shaped by individual experiences and the systemic injustices people endure. Dismissing certain responses as ‘wrong’ disregards the complexity of emotions tied to issues like systemic oppression and the exploitation of human lives for profit.
This is the first death I’ve encountered where my compassion rests more firmly with the shooter than the victim. It’s a startling realization-one that forces me to confront the tangled web of anger, despair, and systemic oppression that we’ve all felt, though to varying degrees.
The victim, a CEO of a healthcare insurance company, was the embodiment of a system that prioritizes profits over people. Healthcare is meant to be a lifeline, a promise of safety in moments of vulnerability. Yet, for so many, it has become an inaccessible fortress, where decisions are measured not in human lives but in bottom lines.
The shooter, while committing an act of violence I cannot condone, has brought that pain to the surface in a way that feels unignorable. And it doesn’t matter what he was thinking or how he got to that point-his actions speak loudest. The system he acted against has caused real harm to countless people, and the reaction of the people to this event should not be reduced or invalidated by any authority seeking to control the narrative. The words inscribed on the bullet casings-‘Defend, Deny, Depose’-aren’t just the language of an individual grievance; they’re a cry from the collective. They reflect the suffocating reality that so many endure: defending themselves against denial, fighting to be seen, and yearning to depose systems that deny their humanity.
This theme extends far beyond healthcare. It’s a reality present in our education system, where access to quality schooling often depends on wealth or zip code. It’s in our legal system, where justice is frequently reserved for the privileged while the marginalized bear the brunt of inequity. It’s in the food industry, where profits drive the proliferation of harmful, unhealthy products while access to affordable, nutritious options is denied to millions. It’s in housing, where the basic right to shelter has become a commodity, and in employment, where workers fight for fair wages and dignity. The same systems of oppression underpin all of these industries, prioritizing profit over people and creating widespread suffering.
I was only 11 years old when I first watched Braveheart, yet its message stuck with me in ways I didn’t fully grasp at the time. The memory of watching it has permeated my soul, shaping how I see the fight against oppression. The film’s themes-of fighting for freedom, standing against tyranny, and the cost of that fight-resonate just as strongly today. There’s a line from the movie that has always haunted me: ‘History is written by those who have hanged heroes.’
This line reminds me of how the victors and those in power control the narrative of history. They decide who is celebrated, who is vilified, and who is forgotten. It’s a sobering reminder that many of the figures we now see as heroes-those who fought against tyranny and oppression-were once labeled as criminals or traitors by the systems they opposed. Their executions, meant to silence and erase them, often turned them into powerful symbols of resistance. The phrase challenges us to critically examine the history we’ve inherited, as it often reflects the biases of the powerful rather than the truth of those who fought for justice.
True revolution, as Braveheart shows us, isn’t just about deposing a ruler-it’s about dismantling the chains that bind us all. It’s a call to reflect on how we value humanity over profits and systems. The inscription ‘Defend, Deny, Depose’ feels like a modern echo of that fight for liberation, and it’s something we need to confront head-on.

Your post shows an astonishing level of ignorance about the healthcare system and its complexities. or you are just young and have been indoctrinated by rich, bad, poor good. Blaming the CEO of an insurance company for all its flaws is not only simplistic but dangerous. This wasn’t a revolution-it was a murder. Trying to paint it as anything else is a disgrace to meaningful dialogue and real change. Christ, this post is so juvenile it makes me wonder if you're getting anything out of the Modern Wisdom podcast.
Take a deep dive into how the system operates-from government regulations to hospital pricing, pharmaceutical lobbying, and the politicians enabling it all. You might discover that the "villains" you’re railing against aren’t the CEOs, but the lawmakers and power brokers who created this mess and profit from it. Look up how Obamacare increased the level of claim denials, long before BT was CEO. Go listen to a podcast with the Means siblings, or listen to what RFK Jr is really saying about MAHA. This kind of rhetoric, suggesting that violence is some kind of understandable reaction to systemic issues, is both irresponsible and morally bankrupt. By your logic, should someone who voted blue in 2024-who arguably perpetuates the very policies you’re angry about-be executed for their choices? Of course not. So why try to justify the killing of Brian Thompson, a man whose position in the system doesn’t make him the architect of its flaws? If you want to shine a light on healthcare’s issues, focus on the real forces at play -the policymakers. This is black and white, a cowardly execution by a rich kid who had some mental break. He is no fucking hero.

    • @TheFoolishEmpress
      @TheFoolishEmpress Месяц назад +4

You accuse my post of being ignorant, but in what way? Is it ignorant to point out that a system prioritizing profit over human lives has caused immense suffering? CEOs may not write the policies, but they enforce and profit from practices that deny life-saving care, set inaccessible premiums, and prioritize revenue over people’s well-being. Blaming only lawmakers oversimplifies the issue as much as you claim I am doing.
I’m not justifying violence, but it’s impossible to ignore that this act has become a catalyst for long-overdue conversations about systemic harm. The words on the bullet casings-‘Defend, Deny, Depose’-reflect the frustration of millions who feel abandoned by systems designed to protect profits instead of people. While this was a tragic and violent act, dismissing it entirely as a ‘mental break’ or ‘cowardly execution’ avoids the deeper conversation about the inequities that created the conditions for it.
If anything, this tragedy forces us to confront the deep flaws in the system and ask ourselves why so many people feel powerless, ignored, and desperate. Ignoring that reality only ensures the suffering continues.

You asked your guest why people are concerned that rich people don’t have their best interests at heart when planning their future for them. It sounded like it was just chalked up to the desire for equality and concern over the profit motive. But, your guest later provided an example of purchasing a $1600 robotic dog for his 9-year-old child. That was a reasonable use of resources from his perspective. But, from the perspective of the average person that’s the equivalent of spending a month’s worth of rent on a toy for a 9-year-old. While I may be wrong, it also seemed that the purchase was done with little concern or thought.
Second, there’s nothing wrong with profit. But, focusing on profit closes off the consideration of any solutions that don’t generate profit.
I don’t think the concern is driven by inequality, nor driven by a belief that profit is bad or wrong. I think it’s more about questioning whether wealthy people actually live in reality. So, yes there is some concern about wealthy technocrats not having a realistic perspective on what people need. And even more concern that their efforts will result in actually harming those they initially set out to help because they have little to no input from those they are trying to help.

Everyone keeps on lecturing to us how the murder was morally wrong and focusing all of their rage on disgust on that act, while framing UHC's actions as policies we might disagree with, instead of decisions that they made that ruined our lives or caused the death of our loved ones. There is a gap in perception that people on that end dont even notice because they never had to deal with similar situations. To then count on people with that inherent disconnect to propose solutions and solve these problems is just insane. Even counting on rich people to deal with inflation when they probably havent been grocery shopping, or at the least never had to budget for grocery shopping, is similarly insane.

Ok, let’s explain this to Marc since he is an elitist who can’t seem to empathize with normal people who are not millionaires. When you deny people life saving and necessary treatment after paying them a monthly premium for years you would tend to hate that entity and the people at the top that run it. And when the entire internet across the political spectrum have a supporting attitude to a person that felt like he had to take action for something all of us have experienced then that would tell you the system is broken. And maybe capitalism isn’t the best way to run healthcare. Something we all need. Like firefighters, cops, etc. don’t be surprised if this keeps happening if the system does not change cause we the people will not care or empathize with the next COE that gets taken out cause clearly you do not empathize with us when we die at your profit driven hands.

    • @jackdaripper137

@ sure I agree with that. But health go to the hospital too. I would say most people that go aren’t there necessarily because they don’t take care of their health. People have accidents, or have a disease that is completely out of their control. I’m all for letting the government regulate food manufacturers and all the RFK stuff but we need healthcare. People are getting feed up and more things like this are going to happen. Especially now that we’ve actually got the elites attention and they don’t feel safe anymore.

Based on the opinion of the CEO killing alone and his terrible inability to speak well, perhaps the worst guest I've seen Chris have on.
The healthcare industry is in ruins, that CEO was the equivalent of a mob boss, and we all know it. I'm an ER nurse and routinely have to tell my patients they're going to get a huge bill because they have no insurance, and they ask me what can they do, and I tell them honestly, I just wouldn't pay it. My supposedly decent health insurance charged me $10k for the birth of my daughter after all was said and done. Fucking criminal. If my wife had not been in the immigration process, I wouldn't have paid it. They basically just make up the numbers anyway. It's madness.
