1:28:00 I have a theory about the green mist coming from Harry's vault. I believe it was the remnants of a Finite Incantatem spell. In book two, Snape uses this spell during the dueling club and it's described as "A haze of greenish smoke was hovering over the scene." Maybe when the door is opened with Harry's key, the spell triggers, wiping out defensive spells on the vault, and leaving a green mist or haze.
Regarding Hagrid "disappearing" i also thought of a potential port key? That's a method of travel that doesn't seem to require magic being used by the traveler
They are going to do every single chapter from every single book. One chapter every week (on another channel) Will take several years to complete all the books. That 198 chapters. Meaning it will take almost 4 years. Although on this channel looks like they are putting a few episodes combined into one longer episode on this channel.
Guys, molly asking for the platform number is just a teachable moment for the kids. Just like when you count stuff at the store with your kids, to work on their numbers. She is asking to see if they know the platform number.
Exactly, it's like several people trying to decide where to eat and everyone has a different taste. They all know the obvious choice when someone just rhetorically says, "There's only one place we're going to find all those choices, The Food Court," which is the local place where everyone goes to satisfy multiple appetites. I never thought it odd when Mrs Weasley says, "Platform 9 and three quarters this way" and also "There's only one place we're going to find all of this, Diagon Alley." It's rhetorical conversation.
@@Caffeinated_Firefly She has like half a million kids, she would notice a lost looking boy who looks exactly like a tiny James Potter, her brothers were order members and would have known him. Even if Dumbledore didn't put her up to it, the timing is interesting considering she also knows she has to hide the platform from the muggles. It's possible someone from the school told her to be on the lookout for him, maybe even Hagrid or McGonagall.
2:48:17 my theory about why Ron's robes were worse than the twins' is that, since his height is always emphasized, there probably wasn't as much choice.
Replying from the UK HUMBUG: A hard, boiled sweet, usually striped. MOLESKIN: a type of tight woven cotton fabric. (Like brushed cotton but heaver and tighter.) Unlike escargot they're not fine dining, and you'd be more likely to find them in a working class Cokney pub, or lower class seaside resort. They're usually eaten covered in salt and vinegar, and like snails are rubbery. Also like snails they need something strong to make then palatable. Excellent work gents!

Love this new addition to the channel. Them talking about McGonagall passive aggressively sending the letters made me laugh, imagine her with hundreds of quills in the great hall all bewitched to write the same thing with that wry smile on her face lolol
McGalleon. And if you understand THAT, then you already listened to 70 episodes of insanely deep podcasting about the series a few chapters at a time. And yet, you are here, sounds like my kind of people
2:00:50 This really hit close to home. I finished reading this series not long before the passing of my mother, so rereading this series really helps to remind me of a fond part of my life and calms me down so much whenever I start to get emotional
It makes perfect sense to me that Peter sleeps all the time. Hes suffering from serious depression, he betrayed his friends and it didnt even pay off, he then lost all protection and human to human interaction seemingly forever and on top of that he is too cowardly to kill himself. He is just sleeping due to depression
Yes, Hermione has that Ravenclaw v Gryffindor discussion with the Sorting Hat. She mentiones that in OotP when everybody is so astonished she bewitched the Galleons. Some Ravenclaw says "how cone you're not in Ravenclaw", and she drops a line like "the Hat considered that for a while". I know because I just read that very chapter to my son last week.
Just having started with episode 4, I realized: Beside a million other what ifs, there's this really interesting one I've never considered before: What if Petunia hadn't been jealous but supportive of Lily and later married a wizard? Would've made a big difference for Harry's early years and also might've changed things between Lily and Snape.
Less of a "what if" but I always wished Hermione had also had a sister who was just a muggle but rather than being jealous, she was super supportive. Because in many ways Hermione mirrors Lily while also being her opposite in other ways and a supportive sister would have been in line both with the mirror and the opposite. Kinda feels like it would have been a nice touch. Doesn't affect the story at all but it's there
i'm reminded of Paige from Charmed. her parents died in a car crash but she survived the same crash by automatically teleporting out of the car without even realizing she could do it.
To be fair Dedalus Diggle recognized Harry one day while he was shopping with Petunia, and he was at The Leaky Cauldron that day, even shook his hand twice if I recall.
I like formal names in the intro. It fits the status of the books as British national treasures, the aesthetic of the set, and maybe quaint the British tv (BBC?) thematic throwback. However you want to look at it, it all feels right.
GB is the asmongold of countries. Everyone knows its disgusting and has a horrific history far worse than any other country on earth. But because they are totally unrepentant about their atrocities, and even take pride in them, nobody cancels them... Even jk is a bigot. National treasure you say???
Since you decided to talk at length about the Chamber of Secrets and Myrtle's murder, I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact that Aragog could never have been the monster attacking people, because all of the victims were always unmarked, and acromantulas are GIANT SPIDERS with GIANT FANGS that would OBVIOUSLY leave HUGE marks.
As to the question about "how did everyone know that was Harry Potter?" Well, he looks exactly like James, doesn't he? And we are led to believe that James was quite well known in the wizarding world. He was a Pure-Blood, for starters and all the pure-blood families know each other and are in fact related in some distant way.
Did you miss the point of the podcast? Sure they made references to future events but the focus of this episode is the single chapter they're reviewing
@austinrestovic Did you miss the point of the podcast? Sure they made references to future events but the focus of this episode is the single chapter they're reviewing
My head cannon is that Hagrid used a portkey to get to the shack on the rock. At this time Albus is still in good standing with Fudge. I'm sure he could be convinced to allow (if he would even notice because security was lax at the Ministry at that time) one to go get Harry Potter for school.
Harry actually asked Hagrid how he got there, and he says that he flew. How he flew or what on is never said, however I highly doubt that his coat, as many pockets as it has, could hide either a broomstick or Sirius’ Motorcycle.
@austinrestovic the only thing that makes sense to me is a Thestral. We are told that brooms can't hold his weight, and the motorbike wouldn't have been able to disappear
21:11 - I can imagine Hagrid just sticking his head to the window and friendly asking to speak to Harry and hand him the letter while Petunia is getting traumatised from his sudden appearance.
Ben, I loved your observations of how Fred and George take after their dad. Both don't mind bending the rules. Both enjoy inventing things and finding out how stuff works and improving upon it.
Hagrid in Griffendoor: MacGonnagal tells Hagrid in HBP that he can represent Griffendoor while she takes the headmaster position in the last few chapters. Surely she would not let a Hufflepuff do this!
Loved the content! I’m going to listen to all of these 😂 - British people say squashy! It’s so funny when Americans are like “very Harry potter” when in fact it’s just very British 😂- Keep your hair on is a British expression, means calm down
In defense of Neville: I have always thought he had some brain damage dating from the attack on his parents. Assuming they were attacked at home, perhaps one of the Death Eaters did something to him, or a well-meaning relative blurred his memory afterwards to protect him from the knowledge and overdid it.
I don’t think so, because Neville is for sure more talented than given credit for. In Herbology, he excels at it, so no comment, Potions, Snape is just the worst, so he isn’t great at (like every other Gryffindor), and the rest of the classes that require wands, he has an excuse because he used his Fathers wand, (the wand chooses the wizard) so he is physically limited with what he can do
It's because neville is using his father's wand. This would make sense that he is poor at wand work until he joined the DA. Its just a idea or the teachers aren't being patient with him
the platform number is easily explainable as her testing Ginny in that moment... to see if Ginny remembers because she's a child still learning about the world. the easiest answer is usually correct
Yes… but screaming it, out loud, with a group of red headed children pushing trolleys, already sticking out like a sore thumb, screaming a platform that doesn’t exist. I do believe that the international statute of secrecy would have a problem with all of that combined😅
I remember a fanfiction in which someone mentioned the unfairness of the trace rule and the person said "Well, the spirit of the law is that a minor shouldn't be doing magic without adult Wizarding supervision, in case they have an accident and someone needs to fix a failed spell" ... and honestly it makes sense. It's still kind of unfair, but... it does make sense. Besides, if you force the Trace onto every minor, Wizarding kids wouldn't be able to be homeschooled Also, about the ice cream, it could be just a little white lie Hagrid said to surprise Harry with the ice cream! I absolutely can picure Hagrid being like "hehehe I'm gonna secretly buy this kid all the treats"
Although Kings Cross doesn't have a car park in front of the station there is a car park that is linked to the station. The car park is located on Canal Reach and has 231 public car parking bays. There are 6 bays with electric charging points on level 2 next to the lifts, of which one is a disabled bay.
Chapter 5- Narcissa looking at wands always bugged me. So I’ve head cannoned that since certain woods/cores are better for certain traits/magics, Narcissa was consulting w Ollivander so he could have wands lined up to try when Draco came in (spoiled brat yk) lol
The fact that Narcissa got Draco his wand meant that Draco's wand doesn't need to meet the wizard to lend loyalty. Which makes perfect sense as to how Harry was able to get that wand's loyalty by just grabbing it from Draco's hand. That wand will sway to anyone.
Not sure if there is a difference between the books and audio books but, it does mention that the Dursley's do get out of the car and go into the station with him. I just listened to this chapter in-between that episode and this supercut.
I wonder if Narcissa went to Ollivander's to reserve a time slot (so to speak) for Draco. Because it would he unfitting for a Malfoy to have to wait their turn.
That will truely make my 40th Birthday a magical Birthday. Hopefully, I will have time for episode 3, chapter 5 and beyond while enjoying my own Birthday gifts and time with family, plus a meal out in the evening. Can't believe I have less than a week of my 30s left. This is possibly, one of my favourite chapters in Sorcerers Stone or philosophers Stone book 1. I love the lead up in chapter 3 to when the magic truely gets started in this chapter. I thought the episodes focussed on 3 chapters per episode though, not just one, given that chapters 1 to 3 were last weekend's episode.🎉
Mundungus is the one that made a sound like a car back firing. I think it depends on the wizard. I think Fred & George were excellent (they said they got their licence with distinction) they'd enjoy sneaking up on folks!!!
As a Swede I can confirm we are big Harry Potter fans! And Frozen is also very popular. They actually do decent job representing Scandinavia and I think especially the inclusion of the Sami people in Frozen 2 is really nice.
I love love LOVED the walking challenge this summer! I figured I’d get most of my distance done at a music festival in July. In my head it was a done deal, it was set in STONE that GotJ was going to be the boost I needed to finish the race. But, come to find out… I do a LOT more walking in my daily life than I ever realized and I ended up finishing (I want to say) about a month before the festival. I’ve been using a step counter ever since and it’s honestly done wonders to my confidence. Thank you.
Hermione DEFINITELY chose her house. She says it in the 5th book when she was talking about the charmed coins and was asked why she wasn't in Revenclaw. She says that the hat considered it but put her in Griffyndor. She left out that she asked for it. Like Harry always does when he reveals that the hat considered putting him in Slytherin.
I would love to see a What If of everyone going into their "rightful" houses, or the houses they were almost put in, like Hermione and Mgonagal in Ravenclaw, Neville in Hufflepuff and Harry in Slytherin, etc.
I remember seeing a tumblr post (I think) of a head canon that Molly probably loudly announced all of this because she’s perceptive and motherly and could tell Harry was uncertain. So she makes a whole display of how it works and then ‘notices’ Harry and offers to help, providing all the options he’d need to get across safely. I liked that notion a lot!
I wish they do these more then just Sundays. It's going to take years to finish all the books. I would like 2 a week. But I'm going to still listen too
The neat thing about the illustration,I found, is that the frog doesn’t just fit with the chocolate frog, butthead fact that Neville has lost his frog/toad so much in the chapter.
Chips in the U.K. are not what we call Chips, but rather Fries, so the Chips bags, would be grease covered paper bags from a fast food shop. They would otherwise say Crisps.
@@sabrinakissell2941yeah in the American version, sorcerers stone, it says chips. In the original uk version, philosophers stone, it says crisps. So it’s the snack.
I think Bill or Charlie might have been the first to take Scabbers to Hogwarts, going off the timeline. It's been 10 years since Scabbers first became a house pet of the Weasleys (12 years based on conversations between characters in Prisoner of Azkaban but that's not for another 2 years, so 12 - 2 equals 10), which back then would be one year before the start of the player's first year in Hogwarts Mystery (I'll treat HM as if it took place in an alternate timeline because there was no mention of Cursed Vaults in the original timeline), but that would have still been 5 years before Percy becomes a Hogwarts student. This would be Molly's 17th year going to King's Cross (I think 10th with her kids), so Ron is about 10 years younger than Bill. So Ron would have been 1 year old, Fred and George would have been 3, Percy would have been 5, Charlie would have been 10, and Bill would have been 12 when they first took in Scabbers.
At 1:39:40, J was talking about the unicorn horns not being more expensive than they should be in comparison to the hairs, and it got me thinking that maybe they’re so cheap, relatively, because maybe unicorns shed their horns like deer and rams and many other antlered animals 🤷♀️ therefore not being as expensive as you’d think seeing as you could probably just find one on the forest floor one day
Also in the chapter where he goes to Olivander's, the wand he ends up with shoots out red and gold sparks when he waves it the first time, foreshadowing him being in Gryffindor
Draco's wand is so perfect for the character who he had the potential to become (conflicted, outside suited for dark magic, core from one of the purest creatures) but I can imagine it going kind of like when I was buying glasses as a kid. While I was getting my eye exam, my mom was looking at frames, picked out a few that I would try, and one of them would usually fit, but I was still free to look at others. So maybe Narcissa would pick out a few that would fit someone of Draco's nature and social standing, at least to have a starting point
Did you miss the point? It would mean his wand has no allegiance to him. The wand is supposed to choose the wizard. Their mom isn't supposed to do it for them 😂
Couple of 9 and 3/4 ideas. maybe the platform number does change, just not every year, certainly not in the time that Harry is there; maybe it happens in response to muggles discovering the platform or just so they don't get suspicious. If the platform number truly does not change then Petunia should have known the number from when Lilly went. So maybe Vernon isn't so much "there isn't no platform 9 and 3/4" but more "You are the magical one, you figure out how to get to it"
I definitely think putting 2-3 chapters together would be for the best. I love this podcast series but I’m so far ahead I’m starting to forget what I read
Peppermint Humbugs - little late to answer, but can't see that anyone else has - yes they are an old-fashioned british sweet (hard candy) - usually striped (often black and white or red and white). Turns out there's records of them as far back as 1820s, which was new info for me as well :)
Guys Tortuga is a real Caribbean island. The name is Spanish for turtle/tortoise. It was named by Spain but held by the French during the Golden Age of Piracy and was a pirate-friendly port for a long time.
You mentioned wands getting passed down. If I'm not mistaken, Lucius Malfoy's wand has been handed down through his family. Could be worth a video talking about how hand me down wands work (and dont work).
A Chapter 5 note (mentioned at 1:42-ish): Cats have always been attributed to witches. In the real world, the main reason is that this stigma happened during the black plague (but has its basis in all plagues). The primary illness spreaders were the fleas on mice. Because cats often hunted and killed mice and are disproportionately loved by women more than men, people often mistook cat-loving women who lived slightly outside of villages and never got sick as witches. These women were often burned at the stake. In the Wizarding World, it wouldn’t surprise me if cars had a more direct magical connection with witches.
Something came to my mind, about Harry's grandparents, how they were proud of their daughter being a witch, and that she was young when Harry was born. Why not give Harry to them? What happened to not give Harry to them? McGonagall was worried about giving Harry to Petunia and Vernon, so where is the rest of his family?
Molly asking outloud about the platform number…. I would ask my boys questions with obvious answers to let them feel like they are being helpful to me…. And it also served a purpose for Harry…. I think you guys may be overthinking this….? Or maybe I am wrong lol I’m enjoying the deep dive discussion about the chapters and how the not so obvious stuff is being discussed… things that I missed while reading or rereading the series!!
Cannot wait to watch this whole series I will probs end up listening multiple times I’ve already watched all the videos and the compilation episodes on here
🙋♀️🍁🇨🇦🍁 Hey guys I'm in my 50's and I grew up with "humbugs" and yes they are the "pillow" cut candy's also known as square, that are red & white stripped... & peppermint flavoured. I'm not sure if it's because I have a strong mixed British heritage or if it was just a common penny candy back in the 70's and so on... I also grew up with barely candy as well which has become a rare thing to find now outside of British import shops Anyway humbugs taste somewhat like a sweeter & milder candy cane if that helps you any... Barely candy has a distinct flavour that's hard to describe... it's basically a very mild sweet taste... I know that isn't really helpful but if you ever try one yourself you'll understand 🤭 ... I just came across this series early this morning and I'm debating on binging as many episodes as possible before I fall asleep... 🤭 we'll see
I think that a lot in this book was not thought through to 7 books. But on the pet thing. Percy got an owl. Owls eat mice and rats. Giving him to Ron was saving his pet.
Keep your hair on is Fred just telling Molly to calm down. She isn't wearing a wig it's a UK saying, when someone is being angry or overly worried at you or telling you off you reply with " it's OK, keep your hair on, I'll do it for you" hope that makes sense
Even though Uncle Vernon is being awful about the platform, Aunt Petunia 100% knows that 9 3/4 is legitimate. She would have seen Lily off there multiple times. Maybe not once she left for college since she was older than Lily, and would have an excuse not to go, but definitely when she was too young to stay home. Hermione’s parents walk her to the train and the Evan’s were too proud of Lily to not see her off every year!
Molly’s Uncle/aunt or cousin could have married a muggle. Keeping Molly’s pure bloodiness, but also have Ron’s blood relatives still wizards until the 2nd cousin
Hello, there! Coming to the podcast a little late but wanted to bring My grain of sand... "Keep your hair on" is a very British expression, like "relax a little!..."😅
I have a theory about Hagrid... When he was accused of being the heir of Slytherin, Dumbledore managed to convince the ministry that Hagrid didn't INTEND to kill anyone, and that was the monster's fault alone (he does a similar thing to save Lupin from being accused as supporting Sirius black in the end of 3rd book)... So when the ministry/Dippet decided to expel Hagrid, Dumbledore might've negotiated to keep him as a Gamekeeper BUT at the cost of the Wand being snapped, so that he is no longer harmful to anyone by any chance. Dumbledore would've thought that to be the best outcome, and anyways is later able to mend it, so that's why Hagrid's wand was snapped in the first place, to keep him out of Azkaban and to land him a job... That's my theory anyway
I think Neville is being actively hampered by his family so that he doesn’t catch the eye of the Death Eaters and won’t have something tragic happen to him.
Around 2:39:00 they've tart talking about Hermione practicing magic and that her neighbors might be wizards. All I could think was "oh, Hermione's mom must have cheated on her dad with the neighbor and that's how she is a witch. She's a halfblood like Harry "
48:59 Peppermint humbugs are a muggle confectionery, not a magical one... so harry knowing/recognizing them isn't that weird. I can 100% see how it fits the naming of magical sweets though.
Ok, hear me out about the peter pettegrew thing. Im pretty sure he and sirius fight in the middle of london, so as a rat pettegrew would have easily been able to hide and eat there for years if he wanted to. If he wanted wizzarding news though, he'd have to go to diagon alley, and if he wanted a guarantee he'd be treated well and not seen as a pest or eaten by owls, the best place for him to go is the pet shop. From there, it would be pretty simple for him to just get sold to an unsuspecting molly or percy. When they take him in years later, the shopkeep notes how nonmagical he appears to be, so i cant imagine he would have been expensive, abd therefore ideal for molly.
I'm re-enjoying the episodes in the supercuts, and I love the discussion of Hermione as a hat stall because now I'm just imaging Hermione out witting the hat and I'm laughing
2:06:52 I think you guys might be forgetting that Petunia knows about Platform 9 3/4 - iirc we see her and her family saying Goodbye to Lily in Snape's memories. Petunia knows that the platform's there. She won't do anything to assist Harry in finding it, but she's not completely abandoning him; she's doing the barest of barest minimums. Not sure if the author wrote the part with this in mind, though.
@@jenniedarling3710I don’t think so. There are definitely family dynamics IRL where this is true, and I myself have experienced this, but I don’t think Petunia is afraid of Vernon, not in general. Both Dudley and she are confused and frightened by his weird mood during the week the letters come, but other than that, they are very comfortable with each other. Petunia contradicts him when he suggests where Harry could go when Mrs Figg couldn’t take him on Dudley’s birthday (and he does not get mad at her), they brainstorm together on what to do when the first letter arrived, she is hiding behind Vernon, when Hagrid comes to the hut on the rock, and overall, Vernon believes his wife completely about her experiences with the wizarding world (in OOTP, he’s about to rip Harry’s head off bc he doesn’t believe him about the Dementors, but believes Petunia immediately and calms down). And I’m sure there are many more examples where they show that they are a supportive couple. They are horrible to other people and specifically to Harry, but they are good to and with each other.
Cadburys UK make a delicious chocolate frog called Fredo. many chocolates that are made to be sold/ displayed in hot regions use a different blend of chocolate to stop it turning into a chocolate puddle. so it's not unusual for the visually identical chocolate bar to taste different across multiple country's/ region. similar to teabags are made to be sold in different regions of the UK to work with tap water which has different mineral taste in different regions of the UK
Love listening to you guys!! Your explanation on candy bars was funny because I had the same realization when I went to England and got a mix of mini bars. It blew my mind because their Milky Way was just a soft toffee covered in chocolate and their mars bars are like our Milky Way ones. Always love the thought process we go through on thinking most things in HP are magical, but most are just something British that sounds foreign to us.
Thestrals make a lot more sense, but I always like imagining Hagrid using his umbrella like Mary Poppins just floating down to the cabin on the rock
LOL I love that so much more than I probably should 🤣
This is my new head cannon!!
I never even considered thestrals
Omg so funny. Plus then in goblet of fire Madam Maxime arrives in a carriage pulled by winged horses.
Hagrid cant ride thestrals because his too heavy.
OOOH THIS IS GOOD I LIKE YOUR THEORY !!
Headcanon accepted!
Regarding Hagrid "disappearing" i also thought of a potential port key? That's a method of travel that doesn't seem to require magic being used by the traveler
Awesome!
If this means that they’re going to do every single chapter until the end of the books, I can consider my life complete

What if: Petunia was also a witch
Less of a "what if" but I always wished Hermione had also had a sister who was just a muggle but rather than being jealous, she was super supportive. Because in many ways Hermione mirrors Lily while also being her opposite in other ways and a supportive sister would have been in line both with the mirror and the opposite. Kinda feels like it would have been a nice touch. Doesn't affect the story at all but it's there
@@ScareCrow90I believe JK at one point had drafted a sister for Hermione but scrapped the idea.
i'm reminded of Paige from Charmed. her parents died in a car crash but she survived the same crash by automatically teleporting out of the car without even realizing she could do it.
This is something that's definitely becoming my favourite thing
Having watched all the episodes separately it’s a real dilemma to decide whether or not to watch this now
How is it a dilemma? It's pretty obvious that you should watch the original and leave a like then watch this version and also leave a like.
@@needsanameedit4982I see what you did there 😂
Ben, I loved your observations of how Fred and George take after their dad.
I think she remains the head of gryffindor house, she asks Slughorn to represent Slytherin as the current head of house (Snape) had flown the coop.
Your podcast is incredible guys! One of your best ideas ever! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Loved the content! I’m going to listen to all of these 😂 - British people say squashy! It’s so funny when Americans are like “very Harry potter” when in fact it’s just very British 😂- Keep your hair on is a British expression, means calm down
Hagrid flew using the Mary Poppins Method: Umbrella
I remember a fanfiction in which someone mentioned the unfairness of the trace rule and the person said "Well, the spirit of the law is that a minor shouldn't be doing magic without adult Wizarding supervision, in case they have an accident and someone needs to fix a failed spell"
... and honestly it makes sense. It's still kind of unfair, but... it does make sense. Besides, if you force the Trace onto every minor, Wizarding kids wouldn't be able to be homeschooled
Also, about the ice cream, it could be just a little white lie Hagrid said to surprise Harry with the ice cream!
Always assumed Hagrid used a portkey when he vanished- we know Dumbledore is more than capable of making them.
Cats are magical even in the Muggle world!
New headcanon: the people who made the Nimbus 2000 were in fact founded in 9 BC, and they started with flying carpets.
According to Google, peppermint humbugs are a real-world hard candy with a toffee center
Chapter 5: didn’t Hagrid in book 7 during the seven potters chapter say ‘thestrals and brooms can’t hold me weight you see?’
How do you know that if she left it out? 😂
In book 1, she flat out says she wants to be in Gryffindor when they're on the train.
I would love to see a What If of everyone going into their "rightful" houses, or the houses they were almost put in, like Hermione and Mgonagal in Ravenclaw, Neville in Hufflepuff and Harry in Slytherin, etc.
They did a series on what if Harry was in Slytherin but the others would be cool as well
I remember seeing a tumblr post (I think) of a head canon that Molly probably loudly announced all of this because she’s perceptive and motherly and could tell Harry was uncertain. So she makes a whole display of how it works and then ‘notices’ Harry and offers to help, providing all the options he’d need to get across safely. I liked that notion a lot!
I wish they do these more then just Sundays. It's going to take years to finish all the books. I would like 2 a week. But I'm going to still listen too
Yes nearly 4
198 chapters
How wonderful that we get something consistently for the next long while.
My copy says they have packets of crisps
@@sabrinakissell2941yeah in the American version, sorcerers stone, it says chips. In the original uk version, philosophers stone, it says crisps. So it’s the snack.
Chips and fries are different in the UK, fries are cut a lot thinner than chips. (UK crisps are what Americans call chips)
I thought the dirt on the nose was a reference to them being poor. Also, later on, Ginny has a pygmy puff.
At 1:39:40, J was talking about the unicorn horns not being more expensive than they should be in comparison to the hairs, and it got me thinking that maybe they’re so cheap, relatively, because maybe unicorns shed their horns like deer and rams and many other antlered animals 🤷♀️ therefore not being as expensive as you’d think seeing as you could probably just find one on the forest floor one day
I find it hilarious that snaps notes from his time as a student are a better teacher than himself as a teacher
I believe hagrid was speaking metaphorically about harry having his name down since the day he was born
Also in the chapter where he goes to Olivander's, the wand he ends up with shoots out red and gold sparks when he waves it the first time, foreshadowing him being in Gryffindor
Resident brit here.
King's Cross Station does have a car park, several infact. There just not open air
I'm so happy. I had to work today and you guys will get me through 😊
Draco's wand is so perfect for the character who he had the potential to become (conflicted, outside suited for dark magic, core from one of the purest creatures) but I can imagine it going kind of like when I was buying glasses as a kid.
Their mom isn't supposed to do it for them 😂
I think the weather thing is just in case the owl comes back delayed or like battered looking. That way there's an explanation for it
Couple of 9 and 3/4 ideas.
maybe the platform number does change, just not every year, certainly not in the time that Harry is there; maybe it happens in response to muggles discovering the platform or just so they don't get suspicious.
I am Swedish. So it is funny that one of the best YTchanels´s podcast is #1 in Sweden .
A Chapter 5 note (mentioned at 1:42-ish):
Cats have always been attributed to witches.
Or maybe I am wrong lol
I’m enjoying the deep dive discussion about the chapters and how the not so obvious stuff is being discussed… things that I missed while reading or rereading the series!!
I also grew up with barely candy as well which has become a rare thing to find now outside of British import shops
Anyway humbugs taste somewhat like a sweeter & milder candy cane if that helps you any...
2:14:27 I always figured it was just Molly letting Ginny answer as a way to kinda teach her. I do that with my kids.
You guys really need to do a quiz that is multiple choice; Wizarding world, or just British.
Harry's the spit image of James, that's how they recognize him.
"You 'might' trip on a stalagmite" is how my science teacher made it stick. Of course he gave the "other ones hold 'tight' to the ceiling"
Talking about chocolate frogs, whe have a classic candy here in Chile called "sapito" literally "little frog"... it's actually really good xD
2:33:35 "Keep your hair on" is a pretty common expression in Britain (might be in America too, not sure), but it just means don't overreact.
In America we say keep your shirt on or keep your pants on. Keep your hair on is not a saying over here as far as I'm aware.
draco did definitly pick his wand himself, because olivander talks about dracos wand in deadly hallows at bill an fleurs
Fun fact, since Hermione’s birthday is September 19, she has known about magic for a whole year when they are on the train.
1:45:50 A seven inch wand isn’t that short... It’s not about the size of the wand it’s about the swish and flick.
I'm re-enjoying the episodes in the supercuts, and I love the discussion of Hermione as a hat stall because now I'm just imaging Hermione out witting the hat and I'm laughing
I feel like if they have a second cousin who is an accountant, Arthur would 100% talk about him
2:06:52 I think you guys might be forgetting that Petunia knows about Platform 9 3/4 - iirc we see her and her family saying Goodbye to Lily in Snape's memories. Petunia knows that the platform's there. She won't do anything to assist Harry in finding it, but she's not completely abandoning him; she's doing the barest of barest minimums. Not sure if the author wrote the part with this in mind, though.
I think maybe Petunia doesn't say anything because she is scared of Vernon and won't contradict him.
I love the intro, it feels like a book club meeting 🤗
Cadburys UK make a delicious chocolate frog called Fredo.
many chocolates that are made to be sold/ displayed in hot regions use a different blend of chocolate to stop it turning into a chocolate puddle.
so it's not unusual for the visually identical chocolate bar to taste different across multiple country's/ region.
similar to teabags are made to be sold in different regions of the UK to work with tap water which has different mineral taste in different regions of the UK
Fredo the frog used as a measure of inflation. (40p now).
Blunt force trauma to the head while going 80 mph is going to kill a wizard
My own head cannon was that the dirt on Ron’s nose is floo powder
Ron got FOUR cornbeaf sandwiches there are FOUR kids attending school on that train. Ron you were suppose to share!!!
