I like to think Mrs. Fig intentionally didn’t call Dumbledore to fix her broken leg because she realized that Harry might get to go to the zoo, and possibly do something fun for once. Then she had to let it heal naturally because she had already told the Dursley’s about breaking her leg. I just want to imagine that she wanted Harry to have a fun day.

Well she is a squib so she probably doesn't have access to St. Mungos, she might not even know where it is or how to get in, and unless she's really good friends with a wizard that can effectively mend broken bones because alot of wizards can't and she probably wouldn't want to inconvenience Dumbledore, and she probably isn't like really good friends with Dumbledore to where she's comfortable to send a letter to him asking him to come fix her broken leg, plus with how long it takes for owls to fly and deliver the letter, plus I don't think she even has an owl, it seems like it would be more convenient to go to a muggle hospital

Voldemort turning the sorting hat into a horcrux is actually an interesting “what if”. Voldemort would certainly have appreciated the hat’s mind reading ability, and he could have chosen to leave the horcrux hat hiding in plain sight where it could continue its primary purpose while also creating mischief by sorting first-years to fit Voldemort’s purposes and informing him of the students’ character and secrets.

I read the philosophers stone for the first time exactly 9 3/4 years ago. And now, my younger sister is finally reading the series. I was so happy since the wizarding world was such an important part of my life (i was a miserable bullied kid that escaped into these books to read about the adventures and friendships i never had). I baught my sister the first book minutes before leaving for our first trip alone together and when we entered the luckily almost empty bus she did something amazing. She started reading out loud for me. For us to experience it together. Her sharing her first experience with these books with me and making me expirience it once again now a happy successful adult. This podcast reminds me of us now, two siblings reading and commenting the series chapter by chapter together. Its so sweet

I have such fun whenever she's reading these books with me (we just finished COS tonight, stayed up until early hours of the morning enjoying the book). It's amazing getting to share this experience with someone, especially a sibling. Since she was a small child she watched me light up whenever I would pick up the HP books. I was always telling her about the amazing characters I got to meet trough the pages. We made our own extensions of the universe while playing as kids even though she never read it herself being so young, she trusted everything I told her about HP and enjoyed it a lot. She now tells me how lucky she feels having a sister like me who filled her childhood with imagination and I'm tearing up now thinking about her words. My fiance never read the books either but he sometimes sits with us when she's reading to me. He told me he will read the books himself altogether for the first time to our future children, wanting to experience it with them which is beautiful (I got emotional when I heard the Carlin brothers saying their dad read them the books, I can just imagine him in the future with our kids like that). I love how much this series means to so much of us, this much, to each in our own way

OOOOH. Definitely more muggle horns would die. Unless Lilly was just the most stealthy British ninja, Harry probably never would have been born so Neville would probably be the chosen one. Voldemort would have had better access to the sorting hat without it going missing for too long and would be near it so the hat could have been a horcrux which is GENIUS because who’s going to destroy the sorting hat or really even question it at all. It makes the struggle finding a Hufflepuff relic unless my timeline is backwards. Hagrid’s position at the school may or may not be a thing for him. From a storytelling standpoint, the triwizard tournament was just to revive Voldemort so would it have been written at all? Ooh so many things are different. Does the prophecy change or would it be between Neville and Ron. Maybe the wording changes? “The one whose blood thrice defied the dark lord”. SUCH a good what if idea.

A point on school uniforms in the UK. The clothes usually have to be bought by the parents. Some schools (not all) allow students to buy generic shirts/trousers/tops in the colours that the school says they should be. This is more likely to be the case in the 90s and in the sort of school Stonewall is implied to be. Petunia dying some of Dudley's old clothes to save money and/or humiliate Harry, whilst unusual, would have been an acceptable uniform for Harry.
Dudley's school is a private school where uniforms like his are pretty much the norm. Things like beating sticks are also common in schools like that and usually stem from activities that students are encouraged to engage in to turn them into men.

    This is very cool.
If you know Corey Olsen(The Tolkien Professor), he is doing the same thing but for the Lord Of The Rings books.
One thing i should mention, is that he started his exploaration very fast in the beginning, and as time went by he slowed down and for example did 1 page every episode because he found out that he can only do this 1 time.
In the beginning he thought that he can finish all of the lord of the rings in maybe 2 years, but right now we havent even finish fellowship of the ring after 5 years, and it may take decades to finish it.
One thing to have in mind for yout podcasts.
But maybe you can go faster because Harry Potter is more simple.
Also another thing, you are doing a good job to read the chapters as its the first time you are reading them.
    Anyway Good Luck!

38:00 another possible additional explanation is the sudden disappearance of dark marks in the forearms of Death Eaters, cause we know that in book 4 that as Voldy got stronger and stronger some death eaters are starting to panic that the dark lord's return was imminent, all from the fact that the mark was becoming clearer. So that night, we can assume that when voldy got blasted off was the same time the dark mark faded out of nowhere. Add that fact with others, then there's suddenly lot of smoke.

UK School uniforms (for state-funded schools) are often something like "Black or dark grey trousers, white shirt, grey jumper", you are generally not allowed to force parents to buy the clothes from a specific place. In fact many supermarkets sell "school uniform" items in their clothing sections. Sometimes there is an item like a special tie, or even a blazer with a logo that you can buy, but in those cases the schools generally sell second-hand items cheaply

You know them talking about the scene were Vernon has to row the boat out to the hut has just led me to imagining a number of hilarious headcannons.
Like first Vernon probably gets swindled out of an insane amount of money just to get this tiny little boat to go to this rubbish house in the middle of a storm.
Then they all have to cram themselves in it then Vernon tries to start rowing and he is just absolutely horrorible at it. (I also want to imagine Hagrid just hiding in the corner watching this whole thing go down greatly enjoying Vernon failing to row the boat and just waiting for them to get to the hut, go through all this effort just for the letter to get to Harry anyway.) Like they are just barely moving for hours as Vernon fails around either these oars trying to yell them into submission.
Then when they finally start moving I imagine the boat just lopsided due to Dudely and them all getting splashed with water and Dudely falling in at multiple points.
While Harry is just squished into the back corner miserable. And Petunia (who is probably horribly regretting this whole thing) just is probably like trying to pull some sort of bonnet or like a plastic bag she's using to keep her hair dry to cover her head.
And she is just miserably trying to hide as all this goes down a she's terrified of anyone recognizing her even here.

I’m really loving these deep dives! Concerning Harry’s horrendous childhood, I’ve always felt it was very unrealistic that a child raised from the time he was a baby in such neglect, abuse and loathing from his caregivers wouldn’t be much more psychologically and emotionally damaged. It’s always pained my heart to think about his childhood. It occurred to me as you talked about how he never experienced love from his caregivers that it had to be Lilly’s sacrifice that allowed him to come thru such abuse unscathed. It didn’t just protect him from the damage of Voldy’s killing curse, it protected him from the damage of the Dursley’s abuse. Despite the lack of love in his environment Lilly’s sacrifice lived in him and allowed him subconsciously to FEEL loved. That’s huge! They say trauma is less about the negative events that happen to us but more about how we experience and process them. So even before he knew anything about his parents or their death, Lilly’s love was why he was able to be so well adjusted and why he was able to love others. As they say “hurt people hurt people” so in contrast ”loved people love people” and that’s why love was his greatest strength. I feel much better now that I can look at it from this perspective haha
