I totally agree that being a multi-instrumentalist increases one's ability to develop new ways of soloing along with boosting an understanding of an arrangement. Picking up the bass along with violin and mandolin really gave me added insight.

The Mandolin is way easier to play than a Violin because it has frets & you get to play w/ a Pick. It's much easier for beginners to make a good sound on the Mandolin. Thomastik Precision Strings are Flatwound Strings designed like Violin Strings.

I'm thinking about getting one, but being left-handed, there aren't many options to choose from. So far, only one company that I know makes one for left-handed people, but it's a bottom of the line quality.

There's a neat method book to help with that called "Mandolin for Violinists" which includes some backing tracks you can use as your background band.

Mandolin is a great 2nd instrument for Violinists, cause learning to strum Chords kicks in.
Absolutely! Chords can be such a foreign concept on violin... but on mandolin they become a fundamental! Love the mandolin for this reason too.
