I also edited in commentary of my own in places, in addition to relevant external information that improves the viewing experience. A lot of edits were made for comedy purposes, or to enhance the comedic timing of certain beats, but never to misrepresent Hasan's point of view.

Yes, I think everyone should at least have a bathroom with normal running water in their unit, and probably more than 100 square feet of space, but I would absolutely prefer one of these tiny apartments in NYC than a single family home in a cul de sac. Having so many city amenities at your doorstep and not needing a car affords so much freedom, and it's better for your health too. That first guy seemed like he had it pretty good. Biking every day is great for you, his apartment was cute, and he can work a fun hourly job and still afford to live in the city. I don't think they're coping, I think they are happy they found a slice of happiness in this crazy world. That might not look the same for everyone, and that's okay.

    There’s definitely a risk-reward weighing hat goes into living in these kinds of spaces. I think the sad part about this isn’t what people are willing to put up with but the mere fact that they shouldn’t have to. All this is ok for a single 20-30 something if they’re down to make sacrifices for the location, but what about older folks and families? The disabled? People who just need a little more space to peruse hobbies? Not everyone is ok with sharing a bathroom with an entire floor, that’s not selfish or unreasonable.

      Yeah I became partially disabled at 30 so these tiny living situations where the bed is inaccessible and a walker is a no go really aren't for long term living unless you own it outright and rely on good luck with your health let alone family. Honestly, my first apartment in Tokyo was smaller than the first place. It just had room for a twin bed and a closet (edit). Shared toilet and shower with 4 people and shared kitchen and dining. That being said, I paid nothing--my work provided the housing. I made $300US per week or $1200 per month. I also got my transportation to and from work for free, free breakfast and lunch at work, and reliably I could count on one group dinner paid by my manager a week.

      @@In-The-Zone yeah! I was 20, so the financial situation definitely made up for the living situation. I was basically making the minimum wage in Japan and I might have been able to afford my own place, but I went to Japan to make money versus subsist. Some context: I had a college degree but made the same wages as my colleagues with just a high school education. I worked at an elite childcare center that catered to ex-pat families, so I think the living benefits were really meant to retain us (since at the time speaking English was a pretty in-demand skill). This was all to say that a lot of people in Tokyo live in literal coffin apartments, but the financial situation isn't as precarious as some people living in similar situations in the US.

    Ok bro is either a rare case and content as a minimalist or he's coping a little bit lol. As far as the average person goes can they live comfortably like that? Not really.. he literally said yeah I'm comfortable I just had to sacrifice family, belongings and personal space and privacy.. it's really not for everyone. For the average person at some point you're gonna want to be able to accumulate belongings, have your own free space and the ability to have friends and family over. The fact the it limits you in almost every way in normal life. Can't have a big wardrobe or many belongings, can't have room or amenities to really have a long term or regular guest. If you wanted to have a relationship this place is less than ideal. You want at least your own bathroom if it's you and a girlfriend. You want room to cook a meal and share it with friends or family. It restricts you greatly in ability to live a normal life and have a normal amount of belongings. It's not for everyone it's a sacrifice you have to make that at times can really effect your quality of life. Technically he's not really struggling but it's only because he settled for a lot less. When you really want more independence and freedoms you need bigger living spaces. You need more private space and room to keep your belongings..

      Micro living is definitely a thing now a days. Seems like his heating/electric bill must be very cheap compared to a standard 1000 square foot apartment. that seems to be a perk.

    • @skylerdann5712
      @skylerdann5712 Год назад

      @@stoneheart_raven I'm not saying it's not common or anything. At this point it's become common because it's the only way for average person to live in those areas. And as far as the world it's very normal other countries have this as a standard. However the rest of their society is based around facilitating that lifestyle and providing the amenities they cannot within their own space. If you told the average person wanna save on your heating bill? But you can't really have anyone over, can't own very many things, can't have space to stretch out or be comfortable all the time, can't have your own bathroom.. they would probably be a lot less happy with it. Which is why I'm saying it's not for everyone and it takes a kind of person willing to sacrifice a lot of normality to make it work. Now if our society was willing to see this as a legitimate way of living and not fringe cases or temporary housing and they'd actually build infistructure to facilitate that way of living it could be for everyone or at least more universally viable. What if you just simply wanna have your family visit for dinner and cook, serve and eat at your home? 🤷🏻‍♂️ It wouldn't be possible it's either go out to eat and be rushed to vacate a table or you can't get together at all. If they had a common area for dining and cooking or something to help the people who live in those tiny spaces a more normal existence it would be a much more popular and accepted way of living. If they had some secure storage for people so they could have more items. Maybe someone could kive there with their spouse and child if tey had space to store things like their children toys and a table and chairs to move in and out.. if we sacrifice some living spaces for storage and public use we could consolidate housing spaces by a major amount. If these people had a common space to be able to eat together, space to exercise and space to storea reasonable amount of items to own.. it's like if we sacrifice the space of a few homes we can consolidate a hundred houses space into 5 hundred housing spaces. And the people living there would have closer to a normal life and not have to sacrifice all the little things that get people through existing. Let's be real here for the average person it sucks going to work all day then coming home to a closet with no space or ability to engage in normal pass times and at home hobbies. If you at least have access to all these normal life things having a cramped living space isn't as bad. It's just your place to sleep and be alone. The rest of the time you'd be able to use a common area. It would make your shitty home into feeling more like just a small room that's your room in a larger shared living complex. If you make it feel more like a hotel room than a prison cell it would make it viable or tolerable for the majority instead of just the minority of people who are able to be happy living such a minimalist lifestyle...

    It's a good optimization of space. Honestly with climate change and the human footprint being very high, it is unsustainable to expect everyone to live in big mansions or spacious buildings. I bet his footprint is very low and comparable to a European or better. Of course, this is not the ideal situation. A private bathroom and a separate bedroom would be preferable. But we can't expect everyone to live in big spaces. What I think we can work on is to make sure that we can find more tiny and affordable apartments, I would also expect the tiny apartments to be slightly bigger and we can improve the income-rent price ratio by increasing the unionization of the workplace when it is reasonable (I understand that some industries need to be very flexible with a quick decision-making process and unionization is not the optimal solution to improve wages but it should not be the norm everywhere). When a workplace is unionized, workers have a better bargaining power for salaries. The current situation is definitely not good and is in dire need of significant improvements, but I think that this minimalist lifestyle is definitely not a bad thing. Hasan must be a fan of the theory of historical materialism but Marx developed the idea in an era where climate change wasn't part of the intellectual conversation. Nowadays we must find new ways to improve life quality, ways that do not rely solely on materialistic well-being.
