MISSION BEACH - A BIRD'S EYE VIEW. FNQ, AUSTRALIA.
Mission Beach (on the Cassowary Coast b-n Cairns and Cardwell) is an awe-inspiring stretch of the Tropical North Queensland coastline. Located in the southern section of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area (17°52'17"S 146°06'30"E), Mission Beach lies b-n an ancient rainforest and the Central Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP) (UNESCO 2023; TNQ 2023).

CONTINENTAL ISLANDS OF THE CENTRAL GREAT BARRIER REEF (GBR)
Along the North Queensland coast within the Central GBR are several groups of high islands. A few kilometres offshore from Mission Beach is the Family Group of Islands; Dunk Island being the largest. The reef waters surrounding the Family Islands are within the GBR World Heritage Area and the GBR Coastal Marine Park (Wikipedia 2002; DES 2022).
Many of these continental island groups show evidence of ancient land bridges attaching them to the mainland during past glaciations. They are now simply drowned extensions of the mainland, due to post-glacial sea level rise - beginning their submergence during the late-Pleistocene-early-Holocene transgression ~10,300-9,300 years before present (PB). Additionally, the present sea-level was reached at about 6000 years BP.
In general, sedimentary erosion during the recession of the coastal plains left the granites and volcanic rocks as isolated hills and continental islands of which the Family Island Group is an example. Other islands within the region include Hinchinbrook and the Palm Island Group to the south (Durkan 2006; Hopley 1970; Hopley and Partain 1987; Lambeck and Nakada 1990).
