- Today we’re going to be talking about the Milwaukee Bucks start to their season, and how they’ve been struggling despite what their record might suggest. After acquiring Damian Lillard and trading away Jrue Holiday, the Bucks were expected to lose some of their defensive identity. But fans weren’t aware of how bad they would turn out to be. After the first handful of games, they find themselves towards the bottom of the league in defense, leaving some people wondering if this is their new identity. The Bucks are experiencing the same drop-off without Jrue that the Warriors saw after losing GP2 following their championship run. Subtracting your best perimeter defender has a domino effect that puts a huge strain on team defense.
The problem is they don't have any truly great perimeter defenders. Pat and Beasley can be good but they're not all-defensive worthy, so unless they sign one they'll heavily rely on their offense

@@theetruth8626defence matters more for championship contenders, Jrue handled POA extremely well which helped Giannis and Lopez to save energy! Their POA has been atrocious because Denis fuckin’’ schroder cooked them to the bones.
Jrue’s offence isn’t even that bad considering how well he defends.
He became scapegoat cuz of his defence on Jimmy however jimmy was just making everything in the playoffs. Jrue still played great defence.

Yup, both Dame and Giannis have never played with another superstar before, so just like when LeBron and Bosh joined Miami, it's gonna take some time for Dame and Giannis to learn how to play together and maximize each other's strengths.
I feel like this is a bi-product of the amount of changes that this surfaced. Most of the times you only change the coach, so the personnel stays the same, so the coach already has an idea of what works and what doesn't so it's less hard to adapt. However, like you mentioned, the Bucks changed their coaching staff, they lost one of if not the best defender, and added a whole new offensive powerhouse. So Adrian Griffin has to come in and coach the team from scratch, something he hasn't done before, and he somehow has to figure out, like you pointed out, how to balance all these moving parts, honestly, if this team was already cooking and blowing everyone by 20-30 points, he'd be the GOAT coach. He clearly is still learning (point proven on the fact that the only started to put Brook in drop coverage 2 games ago, and he got 8 blocks).
Regarding the PnR, I think this also might be the fact that they want to find plays that aren't just the PnR while they can. They probably know the PnR works wonders, so they don't want to just spam it. What if something happens and one of them gets injured? What if come playoff time a team finds an amazing way to defend it? They do however have to find a balance between using it and not spamming it, 7 times a night isn't cutting it. Another example is the high screens for Dame. They used it 3 times in a row vs the 76ers and scored on all the attempts. You can see them at 7:21, 7:27, so they clearly know it works, they just don't want to spam it and want to try new things.
Also, Khris is slowly easing himself back to the team, and he's honestly the glue. When he's on, the Bucks just work much better. And also you can easily see Giannis isn't used to playing with Dame. Check at 1:18. Why is he taking a three with DAMIN LILLARD free sitting there? There's no need. Now add to this the fact that the young guys (Marjon and AJJ) are playing well and might take Pat's and Malik's minutes, they're much better defensively and offensively, well... when the train gets going, they won't need to score that much honestly.
There's also stuff they've already fixed. They're lowering Malik's minutes and increasing other's peoples because they realized they need better defensive weapons. On the first two games you never saw Giannis look for Dame on the drives, on the transition chances and now you can clearly see, that's the type of stuff they've seen in film and fixed.
And finally, Giannis was cleared to SPRINT just a month ago, he had knee surgery, he has been honestly playing like ass in some parts of these games, stupid turnovers, and you can clearly see he's athleticism is not all the way back yet. The one good game he had was yesterday vs the Nets, he bullied Simmons and it looked like himself again. If he comes back to that, a lot of the Bucks problems will also be solved.
So yeah, the Bucks are a hot mess, but even in this hot mess, you see flashes of what this team COULD be, and I think their potential is insane. Get Pat and Malik out of the lineup and put Marjon, Jae etc there. Now you have a 6′ 7″ SG that has a 7 foot wingspan and is a good defender and is shooting 57%!!! from 3PT, Giannis, Brook and Khris to cover for Dame, that has to be enough.
Just a reminder that last year the Bucks started 9-0 and had a 16 game win streak later on, and in the end got bounced out in the first round. So, early season isn't an indication of what will happen in June.

Another reminder that the newly acquired LeBron James & Chris Bosh on the Miami Heat started off their season 9-8 before they started actually clicking in 2010-11 (despite their loss in the finals)
Similar to the eventual champions, Denver Nuggets, started getting torn up in some early games starting a record 14-10. I think people need to chill out and let them rock in these early games. It's not the end of the world if they play really sloppy at the start of the season.
Not to mention, Dame has a history with Portland to where he starts off really, REALLY slow in the season, and then goes nuclear afterwards. Last season is a prime example of that.
It’s 6 games in, they are 4-2 and the team isn’t in sync…imagine 20-30 games in.
They are scraping by. Get real. Boston will demolish them. So will Denver if they get to the finals.

I dont watch Bucks games but i do know how gritty a player like Grayson Allen is...imo he plays hard af...not dirty like his rep is...but hard af...i think ppl are overlooking how good of a two way player he is
Grayson was a good player, but he got moved for the same reason Holiday was: playoff failure. That said, it wasn't their fault; Middleton got injured and then Giannis got injured; maybe the bucks would have won at least one more trophy if not.

I think slowly Crowder will get the start over Beasley. Also Middleton slowly increasing minutes. Once he is a full go and they switch to Crowder they will be much better. Coach already made some changes and defense is getting better. They won't get back to how it was with Jrue, but they can be top 10. Top 10 is good enough with the massive offensive ceiling they have.

Like I said before the season started, dame ONLY brings an offensive bag, the bucks don't got a defense now, they've only got a slightly crazy offense, and thats me being generous. This lack of defense is gonna hurt them in the regular season and most definitely in the playoffs, leading them to an early exit.
Dame and Giannis both prior to this season had spent their entire careers as the only superstars on their respective squads. Having to play with another superstar is something completely new to them and like many new superstar pairings, it's gonna take time for them to learn how to play together and maximize each other's talents. Remember that when LeBron joined the Heat, they were slow from the jump as well, starting the season just 9-8 before they finally figured things out and went on to win 21 out of their next 22 games.
Dame and Giannis will be fine.

This is so ridiculous....the issue is scheme coming from their new coach. They returned to drop for game 5 and 6 and the defense has improved dramatically. Has so little to do with Jrue/Dame.

They have a completely new system and a new coach. Once they know how to work with their teammates, they’ll be fine. I just feel like they play too much zone and will have to switch to more man to man.

Middletons minute increase will tidy up a bit of the disconnection and spacing issues that are causing problems with offensive breakdowns resulting in transition buckets of the easiest nature. If dame needs to be picking up and harassing opps from the full court for higher intensity minutes, Middleton has played like 93 mins from 5 games at 18.6 mpg.
If you can be optimistic about midd getting to close to double the minutes hes been restricted by thus far, if you per 36 mins this current season, he could go close to the 17-20ppg while having a career high rebounding numbers at about 7.5-7.8, while dishing out an equal career assist count, 6.3-6.7
with a significant career high in +/ -.
If the boys tighten the perimeter def and khris is guarding the wing/ fwd, at 6'9 is a solid close out defender on the catch and shoot and secures boards and has the decision making capacity to run the offense in fairly quick fashion, ill be backing kmidd to really exert a bit more of an on court leadership role, in that if its dame, Beasley, Payne or any other new additions to the roster in the same rotation in big moments of the 2nd half, any 4th quarter mins, Kmidd is capable of putting up a high % of shots the team takes in 2nd halfs & clutch points and hits the fair share. remembering that from the 19/20 season til his injuries in 21/22 present, he was a 20/6/5 on 47-49/40/90 splits.
He gets close to those numbers @ 17-20/6/5 with GA 28/10/3.5,
Dame 28/5/5, thats a possible 60-70+ points a night on 14-16 assisted buckets, 20+ boards, thats over 100ppg the big 3 be responsible for. That with better connection at both ends but the perimeter d of the opps gaurds who are running their own race in the face of often lost bucks players
The bucks also lost Javan Carter and Wesley Matthews- Matthews is old… but as of last year could still defend
This has less to do with Dame and more to do with the terrible coaching imo. Yes Dame is a worse defender, but their issues are also at the offensive end too. It doesn't look like the team knows what they're doing on either end.
I just wanna note too that if you followed the Bucks in 2021, coach Bud experimented with switching everything on screens including Lopez onto guards and in turn the Bucks didn't have as dominant of a defense. Imo that's not the issue here. Coach Griff hasn't implemented any defensive system here, so much miscommunication on that end

These aren't Damian's failures, Dame is doing what they hired him for, no one expected 6' 2'' skinny Damian Lillard to defend on-ball like Jrue Holiday, he's there to take shots in the clutch and relieve offensive load from Giannis. These are coaching failures. Everyone thought they needed to fire Coach Bud because he had some dumb moments in the play-offs, but his coaching on defense was usually elite. Now they have this new guy who has never been a head coach before and we expect them to be a convincing 1 seed just because the players are there? Nah that ain't how the NBA works. We'll see how good this team actually is by mid-season and then we'll really see what they're made of in the play-offs. If it's decided they don't have enough defense, they can always make some moves before the trade deadline.
Well, the good thing for them is that they are in a joke of a conference. So they should still be able to rack up wins, despite going through struggles and adjustments early on.

Middleton's D is not there. You don't trade for Dame to try to make play D. You force Middleton to do that, take less shots and let Dame be Dame. But Middleton is so slow on both ends of the floor that he destroys any game plan. That's the HUGE problem. Is Griffin the coach to solve this. Bud sure as hell couldn't.

nah, let them go off. The easy "analysis" is to say it's a by product of swapping Jrue for Dame. In reality, as you said, its a by product of a new scheme being implemented. Dame is obviously no the defender Jrue is, but he has put forth good effort and made key defensive plays in spots so far. On the other hand, the team is not rebounding well, they're playing Brook out of position of defense, the offense is flaccid, amongst other early kinks this team has.

If it aint broken,don't fix it. Bucks since 2019 had one of the best teams if not the best,in the NBA. The key player that brought them to that level,was Jrue Holiday. Bud didn't have Dame Lillard,neither Steph. C. nor Jokic,yet he managed to finish 1st last season and win a championship. Why on Earth destroy that team, and how people were expecting a better team,is out of my mind.
That championship was very suspect at best do to injuries from other teams. If KD foot was not on the line the Bucks would have gone home that season. We see this in the next two seasons of the playoffs as they lost to the Heat and the Celtics in next two seasons. Even if they won they would not have won against the Nuggets that year, they maybe could have won against the Warriors that year. The team is too inconsistent to win multiple championships do to their terrible half court offense. Both Jrue and Khris are to inconsistent in the playoffs to be the second option on a
championship team.
