Eilean Donan Castle Highlander

The Eilean Donan Castle is in Dornie by Kyle of Lochalsh Scotland. It is a 4 hour drive North from Edinburgh Scotland in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. It was one of the key filming locations of the 1986 film, "HIGHLANDER" starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, Clancy Brown and Roxanne Hart. It was directed by Russell Mulcahy.
The film centers around a New York Antique Shop owner Russell Edwin Nash. It turns out Russell is immortal and was born in the sixteenth century in Scotland as Connor MacLeod. In the end, "There can be only one!".
The movie itself was a bit of a flop at the box office, but it has gained cult status over the years. It spun off a few other movies I hesitate to mention as well as a very good series starring Adrian Paul. Currently the film is available on Amazon Prime. I highly recommend watching. It is very well done and I believe still holds up well today.
The Eilean Donan Castle stood in for the village of Glenfinnan on the shores of Loch Shiel in the movie Highlander. The castle is one of the most photographed castles in all of Scotland. It is located on an island where 3 lochs meet. The scenery around it is unbelievable to behold.
The castle has been destroyed and rebuilt at least four times. The last time was during the 1719 Jacobite Uprising. It was in ruins for 200 years. Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island and spent 20 years of hard labor rebuilding it. It re-opened in 1932.
Four generations of the MacRae family still own the castle in trust. It is said they still have apartments inside the castle that they use from time to time. If you go to visit the castle they have a well appointed coffee shop with lunch items and a gift shop. Plenty of free parking as well.
