This topic really interests me. I have a very severe tongue tie. But I also have straight teeth. Never needed braces and had room for my wisdom teeth. I don't have any issues but I don't understand why my tongue tie is supposed to cause problems. I can't stick my tongue out at all but I can speak perfectly fine. And I don't have issues swallowing. As far as I know I've never had any issues caused by my tongue tie. Even though I can't lift my tongue more than 1.25cm from the floor of my mouth.

I think it makes sense that tongue ties are caused by some kind of environmental pollutant. I'd love to see a study that shows what causes tongue ties, and if it is a kind of pollutant causing them, then we can eliminate it from the environment.

I am practicing orthodontist, I do agree that Tongue tie will collapse the arch, I have witnessed collapsed maxilla with posterior crossbite bilaterally in patients with tongue tie of varied degree and severity. I had the same case last week, advised the patient to see an Oral surgeon regarding the tongue which was very obvious. But in this part of the world there are two problems, firstly they are scared of surgery and secondly, they believe orthodontist is a magician who can treat anything with ease. So the father of the patient did not agree to see the Oral surgeon and feared that surgery will be harmful to the patient.

Very interesting. As a Naturopath and mother of 2 kids with tongue ties, I've had similar internal debates about the possible causes and wondered if there is a nutritional cause such as folic acid, just as you suggest. However although your folate hypothesis is very interesting, there are many other nutrients, enzymes, etc that could be involved. There are new nutrients being discovered constantly. It could be a nutrient that hasn't even been discovered yet. I'm interested to see where that hypothesis goes.
Here's my experience with my children, just to add some info to your discussions:
#1 child born with severe tongue tie (noted at birth by paediatrician, but we were told it would go away by itself and recommended no treatment). During pregnancy I didn't take supplements, and ate homemade organic foods, so no supplemental folate was possible. This child was breastfed with no issues at all until age 3, and never given supplemental formula... but at age 15 was having severe problems swallowing and eating, along with TMJ issues and we ended up getting the tongue tie lasered because the tongue tie was still severe (clearly long breastfeeding didn't help in this case). Child's father also has severe tongue tie himself (virtually identical to the child).
#2 child born with mild tongue tie plus a lip tie (not noticed by anyone until child was 5). During pregnancy I don't recall taking supplements, but cannot be 100% certain (I tend to rely on food and herbs for my nutrition). Father of this child is different, and could possibly also have tongue and lip ties, but not severe. This child was also breastfed and never given supplemental formula, also with no issues, until age 2.5. But again, at age 5, the tongue an lip ties were present. However I'm not sure if they were worse in early infancy because they weren't checked then, but I didn't notice severe tongue tie (which was very obvious in the first child). This child had a large gap between front baby teeth, and now that the adult teeth are coming through, there is crowding and crookedness in some of them. Child has the typical elongated face/head shape, but was never an obvious mouth-breather. Child's father also has this same face/head shape.
Interesting note, although both children had no trouble breastfeeding at all, they were both incredibly terrible sleepers, and the second child in particular was virtually constantly feeding for the entire 2.5 years until we weaned. When the tongue ties were diagnosed, it was suggested that this could be the reason for the terrible sleeping... perhaps they both weren't actually getting as much milk as they could be due to the ties, so were waking constantly for extra feeds.

A real cliff-hanger! I am eagerly awaiting the next video, and wishing it was not a series of only two.
I am 48 years old and my most recent dentist (never found one I like, so I switch) has recommended a tongue-tie release. Everything I read suggests it could be the cause of my lifelong posture and other problems.
I breathe through my nose, and the front of my tongue is up against the top of the mouth more often than not, but I can not get the back of the tongue there at all; also, if I have understood your videos, another issue is that I keep my teeth apart during the day (with my mouth closed). I clench my teeth while sleeping. I have a night guard that I wear each night, but my most recent dentist does not believe in them because he thinks the tongue-tie surgery will make my sleep-time jaw clenching go away.
I know it is 'minor' surgery, but I don't think there is any such thing as minor surgery. Thank you for sharing this information with the whole planet : )

Just a thought... I do believe some cases of to guerra tie can be corrected before the age of 5, I was born with a tongue tie and doctors wanted to release it surgically, but my mom refused... She is a speech therapist and she had me on exercises up until I was 5 years old and it was corrected, my tongue moves freely and normally

    • @khantauseef2k6
      @khantauseef2k6 6 лет назад +6

It is not only about the movement, its also about the resting posture of the tongue. When the tongue is fixed to the floor more than it should have been, during rest it sits on the floor of the mouth, leaving the buccal muscular forces to act freely on the maxilla, making it narrow and collapsed. Which in turn will lead to a narrow nasal airway and list of problems that may ensue will keep on increasing.

Interesting you are speaking at slightly different angles.
EmbracesWithin you give a case example of exactly what I mean and talk about in the video. Use and function can affect a tongue tie.
tauseef khan, I would also agree with you that tongue ties can affect the resting posture of the tongue, with clear knock on effects, as you describe. What does interest me is that when people rest with their lips together all the time the effects of the tongue tie seem far less important and does not affect the resting posture of the tongue. #mikemew

Hi, Dr. Mew I love your work. I'm very grateful for all the information you have provided with your investigation, but I think you are missing the fact that humans are carnivores and this is crucial for understanding today problems and degeneration. Weston Price has one of the best studies in this field. You mentioned folic acid as a factor for the development of tongue ties. The best sources for folic acid (b9) are animal foods, not spinach as you mentioned. No plant compares to meat, because of the poor bioavalabilty, seeing as they contain fiber which is undigestible for humans.

We're currently about to start doing some excercises with a therapist. I'm now doubting if the release surgery would benefit the kids at all. What's your recommendation on this?
Fyi the 2yr old is still breastfeeding and the 5yr old was breastfed for 2 and half years. I'm a full time working mom so almost all of the feeding has happened on night times and weekends only. I don't know if it matters.

Her i Dr. Mike Mew. I hope you would reply to my question here. I have a child who had tongue tie at 5months old. I did a laser surgery for her at 5 months. Then the tongue partially reattached (as per the lactation consultant). However we didn't do the tongue tie again and instead we did a lot of osteopathy sessions. Eventually breastfeeding succeeded. However at 2yo now she is still breast feeding but I see that she has a tendency to keep her mouth open. I try to watch her and it seems to me her tongue always between her teeth. I am not sure what's the best course of action at her age. Do I evaluate her for tongue tie and do the surgery again at 2yo. My fear it reattaches again. Also I am thinking might be better to wait till she's older and see if she can get her tethered tissue elongated as she establishes speech and exercise her tongue more.
