This is so true, the moment when you finally get to the General Systems Bus, you hear the heavily distorted main menu theme, it gets louder until you get to the center of it and see one of Looks To The Moon's kind, that appears to be in significantly better state, then you get a communication mark, only for your first dialogue to be about the purpose of live and death itself, then you look at pictures, labeled with karma symbols, that finally explain what they actually mean, you get a dream sequence where you stand upon a mighty purposed organism, Five Pebbles, and, finally, you get to the surface and take a look at an abandoned city above the clouds, while this plays. This is the moment when you truly start loving this game if you still didn't before. This is the moment when you don't feel like a primitive animal, a slugcat, anymore, you have became a higher being and your goal is now much bigger, rather than simply surviving.

In the words of Big Sister Moon, "None of us really miss the times when our cities were populated. Imagine having skin parasites that also ask for advice and have opinions..."
It's sort of odd to see the Ancients' cities being so similar to ours. It's like they prevailed in different technology than we did. Perhaps they devolved slightly after packing their homes atop the Iterator cans. One could expect as such from a society so obsessed with effortlessness and giving up.
One thing is clear, that this place is empty. Both beautiful and frightening, imagine what it could of been like when it was populated. A sky-bound city, overlooking the shores and old city shrouded in fog.

The ancients were probably made to parallel ourselves. After all, rain worlds whole reincarnation thing is based off of buddhism, which also states that someones attachment to the world is what causes them to reincarnate, so many try to live simple lives with no attachment to the world.

They're all gone. By now there's only the dust your tiny little feet stir, feet that were perhaps never meant to ascend you so high as to see this glimpse of this civilization that wasn't yours, and that you'll never meet. You do you feel like so ? The stars can only watch as something deep within feels some form of remorse or sadness for what you never knew.

The departure of the Ancients was no apocalypse, and I think this track symbolizes that well. One day they just... felt like leaving. All their structures weren't set ablaze in some world-ending war, they're just empty, in about as pristine a condition as the passage of time will allow.

    • @randomnerd4211
      @randomnerd4211 Год назад +9

Which raises the question: Where did they go?
The Iterators seem to have no recollection of the event, or simply don't find it worth communicating to the player. Did the Ancients collectively decide to take a dive into the Void, regardless of the consequences? Did they leave this world, deciding to seek their answers among the stars?

@@randomnerd4211 The iterators do know exactly how it played out. They refer to it as “public ascension”, where collectively they all dived into void fluid.
I doubt they were exactly forced to go, but shortly before public ascension, all the supply lines that fed the cities (and many that fed the iterators for non-essential materials) were simply shut off, so nobody would have been able to survive for too long anyway if they chose not to go.

Nothing will top the dread i felt hearing this after struggling so hard to climb to the top of the wall. Seeing what looked like various cities atop large structures (that I now know to be "cans(?)") had me wondering if there would be some sort of active civilization waiting for me.
"...I don't know what I expected," I told myself, soon after looking upon the distant metropolis completely devoid of any signs of life. The utter isolation I felt hit me harder than the many lizards that had thrown me off my trek countless times prior.

Really nice to see some other OGs here from back not long after the game came out. Took ages to get the recognition it deserves.
This was the moment that made me decide to stick with the game for 7 years, the first view of a clear sky you ever get to see, the first time you get to see the world beyond the immediate surroundings of the character, and the first time you *really* get to look at it for long, moments after your characters consciousness has been literally expanded.

this theme really fits the location, going through the abandoned city so alone that the dust flowing by the wind on the floor of the city is visible, looking at what was full of life in the past. About to meet the administrator of this city, this location feels almost end-game like if not already end-game

Ho, just remembered my very first time playing through the game, and this moment, seeing the city in the background, it all felt so human. That feeling was incredible to me, especially since I had just departed from a sentient supercomputer in an abandoned technological overgrowth on my way to ascend from this plane of existence. Having a moment of grounded-ness was really impactful.

Probably my favorite part in the entire game, next to the viewpoint in Outer Expanse. Such a chilling moment for this song to play as you run through eons of dust and rubble, looking over at a place where the Ancients used to live, still standing. It's like being in an alien world compared to the reclaimed wreckage on the surface. SO MUCH ATMOSPHERE.
The song itself also kinda reminds me of the music from SOMA, specifically the end theme.

I always expected to be attacked by vultures up there, Im perfectly exposed after all. On top of all the atmosphere of the area, I felt a sort of exposure I could only imagine being felt by a rabbit in too open of a field, anything up above can see you with not even another creature to distract.
Of corse this never happened, the vultures evidently never bother searching the top of the can for prey.

Best song in the game not because of the music itself but because of everything else the atmosphere it brings the moment it plays just as you finally get atop the wall after dying over and over again you finally make it to this dead abandoned wasteland of a city in the background ,finally above the rain which pummeled you into the ground. Its a sheer overpowering moment of somberness and pure melancholy this is a truly special experience of a game.
