How To Swap 96-00 Civic with OEM tachometer

- My 97 civic DX has no tachometer, I bought one off eBay and all i did was swap out the speedometer into the one that does have the tachometer so i can keep track of my original miles. Swapping clusters is SIMPLE PLUG AND PLAY. No extra wiring needed.
I have a 96 hatchback. I did the same thing and it works perfect. thank you for the video
Shame we didn't get to see it working.
I know I’m sorry but you’re right... I didn’t think of editing that in before I published it :/ BUT I actually have other videos on here where my cluster is in the video while I’m driving it...
@Talking Dog Nope the speedometer will remain the same. So if you buy a cluster with 200k and your car has 112k it makes sense to swap. However, if you don't car about millage or find a cluster that's fairly close you could just swap the clusters in/out in less than 5 minutes.
Does the rpm gauge work right away with any wiring?
+Charlie Tse yes. it works as if it came from factory
Futuristic Manslaughter what? they all have the tach wiring. it will be perfectly reliable.
Sweet. just bought a dx and this is one of my first upgrades I wanted to do
his voice is soo calming
Hey bro awesome video!! Thank you for making a great detailed video. I just did mine in 30 min with the help of your video. Keep up the good work.
Such an odd looking cluster :D Never seen one without RPM :D
WingManGT mine has the same thing it’s odd
If you do the swap can you still see your current mileage in your car? Or are you stuck with the mileage in the replacement cluster
You swap the speedometer to keep your actual mileage
For everyone wondering where to get them, look up 96-00 manual civic cluster and all the listings pops up , just got mine today 🤙🏽
Man you did this 4 years ago and I just seen it now. I just got a dx 97 civic and hate that it only has a speedometer. Now that I know I can change I'm going to order my set and change it. Thanks bro for sharing it and knowing it can happen.
Glad i can be of assistance.
Hey guys specifically wondering when wired up with the RPM gauge work with just the original 3 plugs seen in the video / DX models
@@_williamrain_
It will.
Yo idk if you’re still active on here but I swapped mine out and the rpm’s won’t go up not sure what might cause this.
I have a 1999 Honda Civic and I put the tachometer cluster in it and my fuel gauge didn’t work and when the car runs in park is says it going 20 miles an hour
Awesome video. Just ordered a cluster off eBay looking forward to finally having a tachometer in my car.
why didnt you just use the housing it came with? why swap parts onto the old one?
So the milage would be correct.
Got green check light engine…. No code just light. Could be bulb? Idek (need help)
I have 97 civic dx sedan without tachometer. So is it okay to change it with a tachometer so i can check the rpm? And can i retain my mileage?
does this work on the eg models? eg cluster with tach swapped into a dx eg?
So just to clarify, you didn't have to do any wiring for the rpm to work as all that comes from the ecm/ecu anyway? So it's just plug and play?
that is correct. No wire splitting. No Wire adapters no nothing.... just PLUG and PLAY literally.
This video is a lifesaver! Also as others have mentioned the green connector is for the cruise control light and is not needed.
Please me how to do coz I tried to calibrate the neddle but still go to full tank. Thanks
Will these speedometer/tach clusters work in a 96 Civic sedan dx, with automatic transmission?
That’s what I want to know cuz the cluster with the tach has an extra green plug receptical but my wiring harness only has one green plug.
I tried but it works but the fuel gauge not accurate is going full tank but not going down
Thanks for the info man. Pretty detailed and answered all but one of my questions
I can get these clusters out in less than a minute. I timed myself at the junkyard lol
Well yeah... its only 6 screws to remove... but nobody is racing.
+graystripe87 Oh I wasn't bragging, these clusters are stupidly easy to take out. Wish my Lincoln Towncar was that easy, I have to take apart half the dash to get at it.
You can’t just add a tachometer to the old cluster in replace of the meter on the left ?
Seems possible but you would lose the temp gauge.
The extra green connector on the cluster is for the Cruise Control light.
Nick S. no dude it's for the automatic transmission lights to tell you if your in drive or park
Nope, I grabbed one out of a manual EX that still has the green plug
@@jonnychapman2373 that was not an automatic gauge cluster or it would've had the lights on the dash.
Ours IS an automatic, though it's a CR-V instead of a Civic. Looks identical though. It has an extra grey box on the back on the opposite side of that green plug (directly behind the shift indicator), which itself has another green plug coming out the top and an orange plug beside it at the bottom.
@@3spoopy5me89 there’s two green connectors isn’t there
Did this and my fuel+temp gauge stopped working.
Maybe try again with the wiring? What about plugging the original back in?
BUT DID IT WORK DID U HAVE TO MESS WITH ANY WIREING OR FUSES WHAT HAPPEND IS THERE A PART 2 TO THIS WHAT HAPPEND???????
Yes it did. Read other people’s comments saying it works? But you’re right I should have shown it working. I’m dumb I forgot to add that when I was editing this years ago. I’m telling you. It’s PLUG N PLAY. NO wires. No fuses. No splicing. No cutting. No taping. No cutting. No adding anything.
I have a 95 civic DX will this work ? Mine only seems to "work" (bouncing around the right speed) when I'm maintain a high rpm.. but I can't tell because I don't have a tach.. I have a manual and I want to know if this is going to fix that or do I need a new speed sensor
Thank you very much for this
You're welcome!
I have ek hatchback 96 no rpm. Do you think is gonna fit with new cluster with rpm?
You do not take the black plate off before you remove the screws this is what holds the gauges in place when the are unscrewed from the back. You should avoid touching the gauge faces
so you don't get fingerprints on it because then the whole world knows you tampered with your cluster
thank you! great tutorial, very helpful. just added an OEM tacho to my EK hatch and kept the mileage accurate
@graystripe87 can you do the same with an SI cluster?
my LX motor blew I bought a DC n wanna change the cluster plus the cluster on the DC nothing works can I switch cluster of the LX to dx n wake it work
This is exactly what I was looking for, I just got a Honda and don’t know much about them. Mine is a manual so when I seen it had no rpm reading, I started searching if it were normal lol. By the way is anyone really good with Honda’s that I could ask questions??
Does this procedure work with a car that has a digital odometer?
My car came from factory without a tach. It is a manual transmission. I am in the process of swapping it out with a unit that I found at a local parts junkyard. I am worried that I will have to do some soldering and splicing for this to work. Also I'm afraid I will lose my mileage readout on the odometer. Am fairly certain the mileage data is stored directly in the unit itself, not the main ecu.
Do you have any experience with changing a gauge cluster that has a digital odometer?
Awesome video. Did the swap. All is excellent with new tach. Thanks Much
will this work on a 1996 honda civic hatch cxi d16y4 ?
The unused plug IS the tachometer plug 😃😆😅🤣😂
do i need to re-wire anything?
why not just swap clusters instead of doing all that extra shit
Pay attention my friend, he swapped the center to keep the milage
nice detailed video, can you show me a tutorial on how to change light the bulbs with other colors for the cluster..thanks
YOU CAN SWAP THIS INTO A 1997-2001 CRV !!!!
Gonna have to switch cause I’m doing a manual swap
Awesome Vid man! Great DIY
Thank you. Also thank you for viewing it and leaving positive feedback :D
I have a 99 civic cx and I put a 98 civic cluster everything works except the fuel and the temperature, what could it be ? can anyone help?
Jose Zavala maybe you broke that gauge. it is very delicate. also, did plug everything in all the way?
Fuck yeah bro helped a ton and it works great🙏🏾 keep up the good work 💯
Great video 👍👍 Just installed mine with this video to help and had no problems.
DX hatch?? +graystripe87
I have a 02 civic with the same issue. Would the swap be the same?
Thank bro I did it on my 98 dx and I swapped it out for an Acura el cluster and it works !!!!
Just picked up a 96 eK and it doesn’t show the RPM this video really helped me out 🤟🏽
If I have a mph gauge and put a kph in gauge what will it go by
Just did the swap today. Swapped out that old boring cluster with one that's got a RPM Guage found in a junkyard and luckily beat someone else to it lol.
Does the mileage change to what you had before on the new one or do you have to manually set it up?
is this the same for a 1993 honda civic dx manual transmission?
Hopefully you reply to this, but is this the same for a 1994 civic. Is it still going to be plug and play?
1994 civic is of the previous generation so probably somewhat different
Thank you bro for posting this video I’m going to be doing this to mine here shortly hopefully this weeknd
Arrivy did it work?
thank you for posting this video!!! I also have a manual dx but mines a sedan video helped me so much manu thank yous sir!!!
the 1997-2001 Honda CR-V instrument clusters will fit 1996-2000 Civics as it shouldn't matter if its a manual transmission for an automatic the gear positions are different the Cr-V clusters have the orange accents than the civic's blue. the trickiest part is the speedometer trying to get the odometer to match the vehicle's current mileage. the speedometer is the same 120 mph as you can use a Cr-v Lx or EX cluster thats for a 5 speed if u have an automatic cluster i would use electrical tape and blank the gear position indicator on the fuel and temp guages. i tried it and it works perfect.
Derek Obidowski I have auto trany if I put this cluster with tachometer do I need to do something or just plug and play? What do u mean by use electrical tape and blank the gear position indicator on fuel and temperature gauge?
can you link the one you bought i have the same car and want to do this
Great video man! Very helpful , hey where did you purchase your new cluster with the tachometer? I am trying to do the same on my civic
And everything worked as it should?
I have this car and I want to change out
Can i do this with a 94 civic?
Hey man please tell me where you got your gauge cluster
good work, thanks, greg
My car has no rpm but a Ricey tach I bought a cluster with a rpm gauge will it still plug in or is there something else needed?
+alejandro mendez you should just be able to do this... i dont see why you couldnt
Also when you dissemble the old cluster is it the same as the new one?
you need to make more videos like this! it was a very good explanation!!!
can somebody explain why he switched out the center pieces?
It retains the original mileage
Very helpful... thanks.
I have a 96 with a crazy speedometer. Will it still be bad if I replace it with the old one on a new cluster? Or will it be better to buy a newer one?
late but check if fuse 15 is constantly blowing, if so, it could be the wiring cluster under your intake manifold, which tends to have the insulation slowly rubbed off by the manifold, causing shorts. We solved that problem by wrapping the whole cluster of wires in some plastic shielding.
thanks for this my guy stay blessed g
Just did the swap today thank you so much for your help
u still got the old cluster? ill buy it from u lmk
Tried putting a 95 ex cluster into my 94 dx and the tachometer doesn't work right. It reads 0 rpm in reverse and drive, 500 or 600 in neutral, and when I accelerate it goes down. Not sure what to do, anyone able to help?? 😮
Brandon The DIY Guy did you figure it out yet?
Perhaps its because the car is an automatic which really has no use for a tach. Get a stick.
Did it work ???
Helpful. Thank you!
can you do the same thing but use an auto oem cluster with a tach
Yes you could...
just bought a 98 ex auto, realized there was no needle for the temp, will my 99 ex fit and read correctly even though it is manual? They are both y8's
+theeperfectimage50 yes it will
So this would work with an auto transmission??
great vid
Can you come to mn and do mine?
wanna do this to mine. how should i look up that cluster on ebay?
I dont recall what i typed in but id say... search something like "EK Cluster", "96-00 Civic Ex Cluster", "CR-V Cluster" or something along those lines. FYI the crv cluster also fits and works fine.
Thanks man , detailed video
Why did you have to swap the tach, why wouldn't it read the same? Or did you just do that for your piece of mind?
the tachometer? i Put that in because i dont like that i cant tell how far into a gear im in. what my idle is at and all that. But i have a feeling you meant to say Speedometer... If thats what you meant then... yeah... i did keep my og speedometer because of the milage.
Cheers thats it
did the tac. work?
good video man, thanks
Quick Question, just to be safe:
Would It be a good idea to disconnect the battery while doing this? Or would that matter?
+Matt C nah no battery disconnection needed.
I would recommend it because anything electrical can cause a power surge or burnout of a fuse.
Your the man!
Do you have to change the fuel indicator? For example if it's full, do you manually change the fuel indicator to full or does it automatically does that for you?
+TomNook no you dont itll change on its own.. but just to be sure... point the needle to empty
You know what, it probably automatically adjusts, cause the fuel level goes from the sensor in the gas tank, to the computer, and then to the gauge, so it will update it automatically I think.
Thanks guys. I changed my cluster with the original miles on it. The fuel indicator needle automatically changes to the right fuel level.
How do you get the fuel/ temp gauge to light up?
The fuel/temp lights are working ..they are just dimmer ...thanks for this video very helpful
I've been looking for info on how to install this into my car, It's an automatic so I'm not quite sure if it'll work, but if so this would be super awesome. It's just nice to know where the engine is at.
It work just make sure you disconnect the battery before messing with anything electrical.
Thanks, I ended up getting more research done and doing it, honestly probably in retrospect, was the easiest thing to do to my car
@@Poopythecow I'm only 3 years late but there's ones for automatic cars with the gear selection on them drive neutral reverse etc
can I do this on a 94 and not need to re wire anything please let me know and great vid
+Victor Ochoa you mean... put a EK cluster in a EJ?
Yeah
ohh idk about that... im sure that if it doesnt work out(Being that its a older chassis) you can find a wiring diagram on how to rewire the cluster or pigtails
@@ZEROBONES96 did you find a way?, just bought my 94 & i need to find a way.
Johny boi nah man I just got a new one instead
nace video man mi car is the same of you and i want to do that too, 1 cuestion the if i change to a eom tachometer like you.
i dont need to connect a new cable to the tachometer clook.
Rafael Diaz you literally just plug your old one with the new one. No extra wires no extra nothing. I know it sounds funny but it works.
graystripe87 ok ok thankssss bro! i'll try
Nice video!
Hey, so I guess all the indicators work, right?
Yeah EVERYTHING works... All the indicator lights work even heck engine light.... blinkers, highbeams, cruise control, battery, oil level, Overhead needle lights, all the backlighting... the fuel, engine coolant temperature, tachometer and spedometer all work as if it came with the car with ABSOLUTELY ZERO rewiring or wire splitting.
@@graystripe87 so I have a 99 CX and I just came across your video. So everything will work like it's out of the factory? I guess the extra lights on the cluster that are there just won't matter because my car lacks the hardware? I'm just worried temp and fuel won't calibrate or work properly once plugged in.
For them who tried that ... Does the rpm works ??!
Donovan Bricault yes it does. That is the WHOLE reason as to why I did it.
Yess
how much did you pay for the cluster
+sayerman i payed about $30 or so... its been a while since i made the vide but it was something around that
graystripe87 damn you paid way too much for that you can buy one from a junkyard for 15 bucks
Someone please try and answer asap.
So I bought the same cluster for my 99 Honda Civic dx and did everything shown in the video, including replacing my speedometer with my old one. everything is working great but now my speedometer is going crazy and jumping all over the place when previously it worked just fine. does anyone know how to fix this?? please let me know as soon as you can, thank you
+MyFinestDaysOfficial hmmm that sounds weird... do you still have the old Speedometer part of the old cluster? if you do, try and put the old one back on and see if that one also flips out...
if it does... then its something more than a faulty speedometer... if it DOESNT go crazy... then your Original speedometer is the one tripping.
It is common for 6th gen civic like ours for the speed sensor to go bad, which is on the rear of the transmission, and the replacement is as simple as unplugging it, taking it out, sticking a new one in, and putting the plug back on. Or it could just be a bad cluster.
+IPWN IsTheMilkMan I was able to fix it thank you for your reply!
+MyFinestDaysOfficial What did you find to be wrong with it???
+MyFinestDaysOfficial What did you do to end up fixing it? Really wanna do this mod, so I just wanna be sure I know how to fix it if something were to go wrong.
Did exactly what you did and it worked perfectly, thanks!
