Also going through that same thing with Google and I've been holding it off just not having my photos backed up for about a year now but all it takes it one thing to happen to my phone and I lose all my pictures. I don't even have kids but I get sentimental over my photos so I know Google will win this one too.
It's impossible for me to delete even most terrible pictures of my kids. If 1000 of them disappeared without me knowing, I would never know it. But I simply cannot bring myself to delete them.
