  • Dr. Cywes, who's diving deep into the world of low carb and ketogenic lifestyles. You're in for a treat because this isn't just another diet talk. Dr. Cywes is laying out a roadmap, starting from the very basics of Therapeutic Carb Restriction to the nuanced discussions on insulin resistance, the role of exercise, and even the surprising benefits of raw milk.
As the minutes tick by, from the early tease of a follow-up video to the final thoughts on exercise tying it all together, you're taken on a journey. Dr. Cywes shares his personal journey into the low carb world, breaks down complex theories like the Central Governor Reflex Theory, and challenges widely held beliefs about fuel storage and athletic performance. He even touches on the limits of protein intake and the pivotal role of exercise when it's best timed with our body's natural glucagon levels.
But that's not all. The conversation goes beyond macros to a holistic approach of focusing on whole foods, shedding light on the importance of brain adaptation over mere metabolic changes. And for those deep into their fitness journey, insights on protein intake in relation to insulin and the benefits of a carnivore diet for A1c levels are pure gold.
Now, if you're eager to dive deeper into this low carb universe, Dr. Cywes isn't leaving you hanging. With links to his socials and Coach Bronson's treasure trove of resources, from the ultimate ketogenic fitness book to discounts on your favorite keto-friendly products, you're well-equipped to explore further. Whether you're new to the keto world or looking to refine your approach, this video and the resources shared are your gateway to a deeper understanding and perhaps, a transformation.

I learned this from Cywes quite a while back when he mentioned this in a RUclips of his. I'm a low insulin producer as I was never really all that overweight but developed into Type 2 in my early 50's. My Fasting Insulin is fairly low now, below 6, but still Insulin Resistant a little as my HbA1c is still a little high. I have a good younger friend who is now also a Type 2 but he weighs like 340 so obviously his Insulin production is pretty high to add all the extra fat.

Just simply controlling your carbs is 90 percent of the battle. I will never have to worry about gaining weight again because I now know it's simple biology. Insulin signals fat storage. Rising Triglycerides, blood glucose, lowering HDL, gaining fat In The belly because I was just eating till satiated, which was a lot of protein!! Man 4 years into this and recked my labs and caused weight gain, and DRAINED of energy ALL DAY! I’ve lowered my protein and upped my fats over the last 7 weeks and I feel so much better. I will start eating my fat first then the protein and see if that helps more with satiation. I’m eating 4 very small meals a day. Getting labs this week and hopefully I can see a difference. This makes so much sense. A lot of useful information packed into this video. Type 1 diabetics are told to count carbs. But beyond a certain amount of protein, they should factor "excess protein" into insulin dosage requirements. Bernstein discusses it but the mainstream doesn't seem to mention the effect of protein on blood sugar and insulin adjustments so much.
This must have implications for people doing OMAD as well. It may not be the best approach for blood sugar control and weight loss.
Time to watch the video again, taking notes along the way. Thanks!

    Good interview, thanks.
The discussion about protein quantity and splitting a large steak into multiple meals resonates with me.
I tried the large steak OMAD approach, "eating till comfortably stuffed" and it was a disaster. Very fatigued. Recently switched to 4 smaller meals per day, coming in at approx 150-170g protein in total per day and feel much better.
I have no idea how Shawn Baker can get away with his enormous protein OMAD protocol. It works for him, but I can't understand how he ever gets into ketosis, with such large bolus of protein per sitting. As Dr Cywes stated, any excess protein beyond what out bodies can utilise gets grabbed via insulin, turned to sugar and ultimately stored as fat.

Interesting topic. I am 6’5” tall and approximately 215 pounds. I’ve been strict carnivore for approximately two years. Have typically fasted on a regular basis. Lift weights five times a week and usually get 15 to 20,000 steps in daily.
Was recently fascinated by Dr. Shawn Baker mentioning that his hemoglobin A1c level was 6.3. I found this peculiar but then it started to occur to me that maybe there was something to this excessive protein intake and gluconeogenesis. Clearly his average blood sugars have been elevated based on that A1c level.
I’ve been experimenting with cutting my protein and increasing my fat over the past couple of weeks. I typically used to consume 250 to 300 g of protein a day and about 100 to 150 g of fat.
I’ve cut out the fasting and eat three meals a day and I cut my protein to about 100 To 150 g daily. Have also increased my fats to over 200 g daily.
I’ve added a lot of butter and some avocados to my daily regimen. I’ve broken up the portions of meat throughout the day. I’m going to track my post prandial blood sugars and see how things pan out and also see what effect this has on my body composition.
This morning, I had two small avocados, 4 tablespoons of butter, and 4 ounces of feta for breakfast after working out. 30 minutes postprandial, my blood sugar was 68. We’ll see how my postprandial sugars are with bigger meat and protein boluses.

Regarding the "central governor theory" at around 20:00 and subsequent discussion, if I'm following correctly, the assertion seems to be that fat-adapted athletes do not experience a brain-induced shutdown of the muscles, because they have ketones and fat available to use as a backup energy source. I'm fine with that part. However, my understanding from other sources on this topic, is that fat molecules and sugar molecules contain different ratios of oxygen within them. Sugar being C6H12O6, and fat being C54H108O6 (with some slight variation). This gives sugar a much higher ratio of "onboard" oxygen than fat molecules, upwards of 9x higher, making it a better fuel for anaerobic exertion, since the lungs don't have to do all the heavy lifting to oxidize the fuel. Whereas fat oxidation relies on oxygen pulled in through the lungs to occur. I can see maybe that being more fat adapted could train your lungs to become more efficient, and thus expand the range in which you can perform tasks aerobically, but I have also heard that to a large extent, VO2 max isn't something you can really train. For anaerobic tasks like weightlifting, sprinting, etc, glucose will always outperform fat, right? They're not metabolically equal in terms of function. They both have their role. Unless I'm not understanding something key about how fat is metabolized.

300g steak is not 300g of protein. Good luck eating 300g of protein from meat in a single sitting, that's about 1.5 kilograms of meat.
I understand that the guest was going for an analogy, but it was a poorly crafted one in my opinion. Still, I'm looking forward to that book he mentioned; he's probably more eloquent in written format.

My diet has been largely animal based for a couple of years now. I do/did suffer from inflammation and stiffness, my one hip was literally on a weekly cycle. 3 to 4 days of pain and stiffness, a few days good - repeat. A couple of weeks ago I decided to go high fat. I haven't mastered cooking fat or enjoy it. I was eating most chewable trimmings and adding ghee or butter.
I started taking 1/4 cup Acropolis olive oil first thing in the morning. Then throughout the day I have 2-3 cups dilute decaf Marley coffee with a half stick of butter per emulsified cupful.
Almost within a day the inflammation improved drastically. Previously if I tried a chin up my elbows would scream. I just managed one yesterday with no pain. I just did a solo canoe trip for 3 days in rugged Temagami wilderness with close to 30 portages. I felt it in my hip but it resolved within a day.
All the research about health can drive one beneuks.
It really made me wonder about the mechanisms of damage but this sheds so much light on it for the laymen like myself.
Many of us have a long history of experimentation, supplements, diets, lifestyle habits etc.
I take frequent saunas, started 4-4-6-2 breathing in the morning and so on.
I always wondered, was it the gut bacteria, toxins, constipation, genetics, parasites, moon cycle???
Anyways, thanks for the info and look forward to more podcasts and the book.
Dr. Cywes if you're near Toronto again someday, drive 3 hours north and I will buy you a coffee and half a dozen donuts, ha ha haaa...

We started eating grass fed beef sausage to organic primal mayo (thx costco) that have high monosaturated fats..coupled with vegs like artichoke heart to heart of palms low-carb noodles..has finally let us shift to keto within a week. Healthy keto like this is key..don’t assume everyone can desaturate saturated fats..and to also minimize polysaturated fats that easily oxidize.

300g beefsteak contains around 26g protein per 100g meaning 300g contains only 78g protein so a person who wants to eat 150 g protein would need to eat 570g beefsteak, but who would need 150g protein, 150kg body weight is a relatively high goal. There is some confusion when the total weight of meat is called protein, when someone says 80/20 protein to fat I assume they mean meat to fat, not protein to fat, I would like to know if I am right or wrong on this.
