  • Hasbro has been the subject of a lot of negative attention lately. I hate to see it (because I’m a fan and it’s bad for my business) but it’s totally justified. Many people talk of leaving the hobby…but wait! There are PLENTY of Hasbro alternatives out there that you might even end up liking more!

I own several. Their troopers are leaps and bounds better than what Hasbro is offering. And because they use a harder plastic, armored characters actually feel like they're wearing armor and they tend to come with more hands and weapons than their American counterparts.
The only downside now is the price skyrocketed after the pandemic (I remember en Ebay seller was selling the 1/12 character kits for less than $20 before 2020), the character selection isn't the greatest and they seemed to have slowed down releases and manufacturing considerably. I get mine now from BBTS and it can be months before a preorder gets fulfilled.

The history of Action Force is actually way more complicated. It was a completely different toyline made in the UK, but Palitoy who made it also had distribution deals with Hasbro so they started to sneak repainted RAH figures into the line. Then they were bought out by Hasbro and the line was completely refreshed, with all the figures now basically being RAH figures with the Action Force name slapped on, until they just dropped it altogether and from that point the line was just called GI Joe in the UK. So it was a weird toyline that started out as one thing and then slowly became something else altogether.
The original Palitoy figures are cool, they were basically made because Palitoy was seeing their sales of Action Man (the UK localised 12" GI Joe figure they'd been licencing from Hasbro for years) slipping, but sales of Star Wars figures picking up (they also had the UK licence for Star Wars and made some cool original pieces as well as importing a lot of Kenner stuff). They decided to relaunch Action Man as a 3.75" line, at pretty much exactly the same time Hasbro in the US had the same idea. Some of the Palitoy-era Action force figures and playsets are very cool and highly sought after by collectors.

I’m getting tired of how the big companies treat their customers and have been spending most of my money on third parties. I’m glad you mentioned 2 of my favorites in your top 4. Action Force is a great line the mostly focuses on more real world soldiers with some Sci-Fi elements thrown in. Their figures are easily customizable and their owner listens to and cares about his fans.
Mythic Legions is another smaller business that cares about their fans. They let their fans vote on which figures they should make and which ones to re-release. Their universe is fantasy based. They also offer a Sci-Fi line line called Cosmic Legions. Both lines are easy to pop and swap parts.

I collect DC Multiverse What I’m tired of is knowing when there are obvious, glaring issues with a figure (or figures) and rarely if ever hearing Todd McFarlane say he is working on the problem, I.e. at least trying any way to fix it. For example, when Target cancels an order and says they sent an email informing that if I don’t acknowledge I still want a particular figure. Or a figure whose arm breaks off at the bicep on literally half of those figures. I realize some things aren’t his fault, but he could at least 1. acknowledge he’s aware of the problem (“I hear your concerns!) 2. says he will then does actually meet with Target officials or with whomever else is in position to do better. Simple acknowledgment goes a long way.

There is an initial shock value with statues, but it will pass over time once the honeymoon phase ends.
With toys, you can repose them and bang! New feelings all over again.
Also, negative emotions can get attached to static environments over time. With toys, you can just change the pose.
With statues, the very few smart collectors, like gemmint who has talked about this, sell and purchase new statues all the time to keep things fresh. This is the only way as you cannot repose.
Statues are not an alternative, they are just different, and made for different types of people.
Don't let the initial wow factor fool you.
I am just saying this to protect even one purist toy collector.
Don't make the mistake I did!

    • @keeleon

To me the posability is one of the biggest part of the "Art" that I enjoy about action figures. Ever since I found double knees and elbows its hard to even enjoy single joints. I have zero interest in statues. Even Reaction figures get a thumb down from me because we should be beyond that.

Great showcase for other types of figures on the market. I always forget there's new collectors that don't know what's out there. figurarts are expensive but for anyone who wants to try them out without breaking the bank, target sells some of the base figures from like naruto and DBZ for like $40-50. I've seen naruto, goku, goku black to name a few, they don't really come with any accessories or FX pieces but they do come with several interchangeable hands and faces/heads so you do get plenty of display options. it gives you a good sample of what the line can do in terms of articulation without paying upwards of $60-100+ for most of their other figures. NECA is by far my favorite figure company cause you just can't beat their quality and the amount of stuff you get for the low price they charge (around $30 for normal figures to around $35-40 for predators).

They're not always the most articulated (though some recent figures like Optus Pexus are incredibly articulated) or the most accurate, but they're a good balance of price and quality with enough engineering to be fun but never tipping over into frustration or complexity for the sake of complexity.

Awesome! Well said, man. I too used to, well, like getting action figures. Was pretty disappointed with ‘Boing’ parts falling off like the MacFarlen series (only good in boxes). Eh, not so great taken out of them boxes. You could well be the Ambassador of ‘Mid Country’* toys. Hahaha. Spread you views across Asia. Would nice if you can review Mech toys - like Robotech, Transformers, etc. I once saw somebody trying to sell Robotech’s Action Figure with the Cyclone Bike for ONE Thousand bucks (people actually paid that price! Dang!). Thank you for the reviews. BTW *Mid Country - literal translation for China.

As a batman collector I will say Todd's hands are kind of tied because DC mandated especially with the 66 line a batman be in every wave and it sort of carried over to the multiverse line and Todd also has a special connection to the bat.

Been watching Better Call Saul, Big Nerdy? 🤣 I've been collecting the movie masters green lantern figures lately, they're cheap they stand up and they look cool, and seeing the movie in theaters as a kid gives it a special place in my heart. I hardly ever buy anything they release nowadays. Just ordered a DC Direct series 1 Kilowog now that I've pretty much got the movie masters line complete, time to start on the comic lanterns! Had to start with my man Kilowog ✊

Just got my Dark Evil-Lyn from Mattel today! Beautiful Figure! I don't usually go the 7" Scale, but she's just too nice. I also have the very Expensive Sun Wukong aka Monkey King ordered as well as Red Sonja! Again, I normally can't afford the more expensive Figures, but I am biting the bullet! I am buying Warhammer Armored Figures when I can afford them. I am buying the cheaper $20 ones right now. McFarlane DC stink! All Batman, others look like they have Down's Syndrome! I have built 6 different DC Earth's, I have bought exactly 4 McFarlane DC Figures! I would buy DC if I thought they were any good! And yesterday I celebrated my 29th year as a Collector! I have built 10 different Earth's, I have over 4,000 Figures! I can not afford Mafex or Mezco! I can rarely go Expensive.

SH Figure Arts fugs were the standard for articulation and quality going fir anime figures as far back as the late 90,s . They were the furst action figure line that were priced at premium prices of $30 to $90.
Hasbro and the other U.S. action figure toy companies didn't start adapting Figure Arts quality until the earl 2000,s

correction: SHFiguarts are true 1/12 scale. where Mezco is 1/11 to 1/10 with most of their things. Hasbro ML is a 6-inch scale (don't confuse this with 1/12 scale, because 6-inch scale means all regular characters starts at 6-inch with shorter character gets smaller and larger character larger)

Count me in as someone who is checked out of Hasbro's offerings save for when they make a character that I know nobody else will (EU and videogames). I'm tired of substandard articulation, crappy plastics and rising prices that make purchasing more higher end stuff palatable.
NECA and Hiya for my Aliens and Predators (glad you mentioned them!), 3rd party transformers for my Beast Wars fix (specifically, TransArts Toys for Season 2 and 3 characters), Bandai, MPC and AMT for my Star Wars model kits as well as the Tamashii Natons Movie Realization line for those higher end Star Wars figures that are incredible and DC Multiverse for, duh, DC.
I'm considering taking the plunge on a Mezco Alien or Predator to see if they are worth it over NECA; reviewers I watch are kinda torn which was surprising.
And say what you want about McFarlane Toys, at least they try to give in some extra value for the money in the form of extra hands, stands and the build a figure concept. Star Wars Black Series and Vintage Collection are very barebones.

If I'm gonna pay over $25.00 for molded plastic, comic book action figures, I'll pick and choose between Mafex and Amazing Yamaguchi figures.
Totally disappointed with the Marvel Legends 60th Anniversary box set.

I recently stopped buying Hasbro Transformers, and I'm now buying all 3d party and couldn't be happier. I still buy the Hammond Collection stuff, but beyond that, it's all independents who I get my dinosaur stuff from. Beasts of the Mesozoic changed my life. The Jurassic franchise is fucking dead in the water, as are 30 dollar Transformers. Things have gotten so fucking bad. I really miss TOYSRUS! NECA has yet to let me down with the Aliens and Predators, and I'm thankful for that at least. Iron Factory makes incredible 3d party Transformers!

To me NECA has offered the best bang for your buck on domestic figures to date. It helps I'm a horror nerd and they do everything from the Universal Monsters to The Conjuring Universe and their non-horror properties like Alf or TMNT are better than they have any right to be.
Aside from WWE Mattel, NECA's the one brand I'll go out of my way to track down. I just got their Dracula, it's already a contender for best of 2023, it's perfection!
Also I'd like to add one more brand to the list: Jada Toys. They only have Universal Monsters and soon Street Fighter to their name, but I'm seriously impressed with what they've done so far and how they're continuing to make strides to improve their product. They're a cheaper alternative for NECA's Universal Monsters if you want more generic versions of the characters over Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney Jr's portrayals
