Austin is a unique city, epitomized by its quirky motto, "Keep Austin Weird." Austin stands out as a vibrant Blue Oasis in the heart of a predominantly Red State. In this video, we wanted to explore and understand the coexistence of these two contrasting realities.
We headed to Austin and its surroundings and were in for a surprise!

As a patriotic conservative from Texas, originally from Minnesota, I was expecting something completely different from your video. But you did am amazing job of speaking truthfully. I was a teacher in China for almost a decade. I have had students who've ended up in extremely liberal universities invite me to visit them, but in turn refuse to come to Texas to visit my family because of the lies presented to them by the media and their liberal friends. One mentioned the fear of being lynched (she is Chinese) which I laughed at, but realized she'd been convinced that it was a truth and she wasn't going to risk it. My wife, also Chinese, was surprised to hear these claims.
So thank you for making this video, I hope my former students will watch it.

I’m Asian and have lived in a small town in a conservative state for 3months for a summer internship. I was scared at first to move there but people were nice to me. As the token minority everywhere I go, I didn’t experience any outright bias against me. However, it’s the implicit bias that over time really bothered me. If anything goes wrong, I would be the first one to be the suspect and take the blame. Constantly having to think how I’m under scrutiny is exhausting. It’s not as scary as the media depicted but I’m not moving back.

I've come to realize that the media, often championed by 'insta-lefties' and woke/PC culture, really promotes a form of sheep or mob think. You've done an outstanding job of stress-testing your assumptions by being open to the world and seeking multiple inputs to achieve as much clarity as possible.

The South does have its issues for sure and there is no sugar coating that, but the majority of people down here are good people. I am Nigerian-American born and raised in WEST TEXAS (Blue Texas). I experienced more racism living in Colorado and Ohio than I ever did in Texas. I lived in Austin for 10 years, and yes it's quirky and weird (for Texas) but don't forget there is Houston (which is blue and the most diverse city in the country), and you have Dallas/Fort Worth. I think Texans are the most genuine, friendly fun people you will meet, in ANY part of the state (with the exception of East Texas.....you'll never find me there LOL). I will say now that Austin is probably the most UNFRIENDLY city in Texas these days just because all of the newcomers who live in their tech bubble (no offense...I'm actually in tech, too).

great video! I moved to Austin a couple years ago, and I couldn't be happier. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed rural Texas as well. I don't think the former Austinite you interviewed did much traveling outside of the city, and most of his second-hand negative experiences sounded like they were borrowed directly from the news or from a like-minded friend (who also probably got it from the news). The fact that he never personally had a negative experience really tells you all you need to know. Austin is a great city, but the rest of the state is great as well. You won't find a more welcoming people.

Great amazing video; however, you missed some major story points. Trilogy Systems was the Paypal Mafia of Austin. It led to many of the vibrant companies in Austin getting created. On top of that, you completely missed your chance to talk about Capital Factory and Joshua Baer. Josh used to work at Trilogy Systems and single handedly accelerated the Austin tech scene by creating Capital Factory. Without him there would be zero social infrastructure in place to allow ATX to scale to a Silicon Valley competitor.

Like others have said, there's a difference between living in a place and visiting a place. And if more people who look like you and think like you move into an area it changes the dynamic and the locals aren't often excited about the change.
Also, I'm tired of everyone thinking that racism is white robes and torches or that it's everyday and blatant. Racism is the microaggressions, lack of safety, and inequality. It's a double consciousness.

Racism is not a big part of Texas, but it is a little more pronounced in the eastern parts bordering Louisiana .
It appears more conservative than it actually is because of Republican gerrymandering. Remove the gerrymandering and the state would be on the blue side of purple.
Texas has a lot of people coming and going, even in small towns, so the residence are not as isolated as some states up north and are open to lots of different people.
Also there is plenty of red in Austin despite its blue leaning.

It's that balance between safety ( that is necessary. ) and staying humane to not cause prejudice that is dangerous but necessary. Otherwise we are not free and the other guy is not free ( because he is jailed into an image that the media and the world created for him/her ). And the progressive are doing the same thing that they are saying the conservative are doing : painting the other with assumptions. From my experience being around both sides of the spectrum (Research Triangle and surrounding areas in NC), most folks aren’t really politically active. A lot of them just have this “leave me the fuck alone” mentality. It’s honestly a very small minority (most of them are on social media) that make it sound like the world is crashing and burning.
And even still, most these guys aren’t a threat. They’ll talk a big game on social media. They’ll even try to sound arrogant and elitist. But, when it comes down to it, almost none of them are going to commit to acting on what they are going on about in social media.
In short: it’s just noise. Almost no one on either side blowing on a megaphone is willing to put their money where their mouth is.

I’m by no means a victim I grew up on tiny town in south Texas about 30min from a larger city and there was only like 5 whites family in the city of a few thousand so the school was lik 94 percent Hispanic kids and maybe 4 percent white and the rest black or Asian so the only people who got made fun of where the everyone but the Hispanic kids so that was kinda funny looking back even the teachers where openly racist I would get made fun of because my parents could afford to get me nice headphones and Abercrombie clothes that kind of thing and didn’t act tough like the other 12 yr olds and where dickies and south pole or whatever haha and over time after being new it fades some but it’s still there and it didn’t help that I lived out in no where 15 min outside the small town but hopefully it’s obvious I didn’t shave my head and hate everyone I took it in stride and in the end the majority of my friend where Hispanic and the few that lived around me I became very close to and slept over all the time so I taught me a lot about different culture and levels of income what people did for fun and ate and we got along great we were both generous to each other and would have be friend for a long time but I left at the start of high school and moved away and ironically all my friends left around the same time to but anyway yes the media is usually wrong sure racism exists but usually it’s fairly moderate and I didn’t mind the light hazings I’m glad they felt comfortable to say what the wanted to sure I held back usually to be extra nice but for most those kids me and the few other white kids formed there vision of white people are in there early years and I’m sure they thought there not so bad we get along and find the same stuff funny and can relate sure even to this day I suck at Spanish so I didn’t get all there jokes if they where in Spanish unless someone explained it but just thought I’d say this because people always assume whites “dominate” everywhere we’ll in Texas there are many city’s that are Hispanic make up is over 80 percent or some that are black 40 percent so it just depends and yes I’ve seen examples online of really racist on claves but to this day I’ve never actually been to one my self and even if so they can do whatever they want I’m going to do me and have my beliefs they can have there’s I’m not trying to force my will on anyone

I'll just say that you can look at the local and state policies and how it play out to decide what kind of people there are. Oftentimes, people say one thing yet their votes speak for themselves (i.e. opposed to what they said). Who did people vote into their local and state offices and what kind of things these representatives rolled out are something you as a visitor cannot experience and will never experience until you actually live there (because you were one of those that were not impacted).

Worked for LCRA for awhile. I come from up around the Temple-Waco area. Inner inner city Austin was as progressive as one could get, but venture 5 minutes outside and most people are conservative. Big cities lean progressive. Outside lean conversative. There are a good deal of Trump supporters here, but that does not mean they support racism or bigotry. There are pockets of extremists, such as the idiot from Bruce-ville Eddy, but you'd have to search that out. Texas is as multi-racial as one can get. Very inclusive. On my street....there's african americans, caucasians, native americans, and hispanics. My wife works with African nationalists and South Koreans. No one could care any less about skin color or race. A moderate (perhaps even a Democrat) could most certainly win an election here, but from my personal experience, most Texans are apathetic and simply don't care enough to vote one way or the other. Those with STRONG emotions in an already conservative state are the ones that vote, so that's who is elected.

Black woman 1st gen American Native Texan specifically from Houston, TX, went to college in Waco, and lived in Dallas for a short period. I now live in NYC. I experienced way more racism in NYC than I ever did in Texas.
I always tell people, Texas isn’t a true red state; it’s has the WORST voter turnout…number 40 something out of 50 states. All major cities in TX lean left when you look at the actual data. Ted Cruz almost lost the senate race by 3% when Beto ran; Trump helped him out with turnout.
New York is a red state without NYC.
We all have to put labels on the shelf and get back to just being people.
Racism does exist in TX, but it showed up differently for me when I was there. It showed up as people still being nice but ignorant if/when I saw it. NYC felt blatant…followed in stores, got no help in stores, told to go back to a neighborhood while running an errand in Brooklyn, people cross the streets or hold their bag tighter, etc.

As a born and raised Texan from a small town in east Texas, who is gay and is an interracial marriage, I can say that I've had many negative experiences with homophobia, racism, and sexism. I lived the first 21 years of my life in that state and I never want to move back. There are members of my family that are blatantly racist but will never say it to the face of any person of color. They will say all day long that they love everybody and live and let live, but they're lying because I listen to the garbage they speak when they watch the evening news. This is certainly not everybody. But please know that those people do exist and inlarger numbers in the south. I would say that due to the nature of your video , the places you visited, and the length of time you were there, you didn't have an opportunity to have an experience that a lot of us do have. There's a lot more to this conversation. I'm glad the folks at the bars and Texas showed you a nice time, but Mckinney is not a small town. Seek out a place like Grand Saline and try to apply for a job and then tell me if the racist undertones don't become pronounced to you.

I think the difference is you VISITED small town Texas instead of LIVING in small town Texas. Everyone's nice to visitors and tourists, but if you move in and then more minorities move in, then there's going to be trouble. Also, women don't have the same rights in Texas compared to other states like NY and CA. I'm from small town Ohio as a minority and I've never really felt comfortable in my adult life until I moved to New York City. I get the stares whenever I go to a bar when I go back home-especially if I go to a townie bar. I'm happy you experienced a good time, but racism in America isn't just cross burnings and violent confrontations, it's micro-aggressions, belittling, and passive. Americans are nice and welcoming... to a point. You can visit and enjoy, but just don't move in.

This is a fair point. As a matter of fact our production team is mostly made of women (see credits) but we all felt this topic would have moved the video in a different direction.
Our angle was about the nuances of Texan culture, and relationships between left and right leaning people. Abortion is such a complex topic, I don’t feel we would have been able to land the video in a middle ground.
Very valid point, though. Point taken.

I am an immigrant who lived in Texas for 10+ years before recently moving to the East Coast. Texas and Texans will always have a special place in my heart, cause people there were always very kind and welcoming to me. And I had a question in the back of my head, whether my experience would have been different if I wasn't white. So this video was very interesting to me, and I appreciate your view!
I just felt that if you are talking not only about racial aspect, but also about politics and gun rights/gun violence, the abortion rulings would be important to mention as another divisive topic (more divisive than gun rights in my view), as for me and my female friend it was a big factor in our decisions to stay in the state or move elsewhere.

one thing to note, just from nowhere =).
"What if" people who flee from California are seeking that "another" lifestyle? So that's not how the media depicts the altered reality, but that people move to (for example) Texas looking for a better suitable environment?
I don't think that: a) California pays less than Texas, b) California provides worse life quality (especially comparing the nature, weather and points of interest), c) Life is way more affordable in Texas.
So if that's true - people stay in Texas for other reasons, not related to the mentioned above. And these reasons are directly related to "republican" states. Just saying that this could be the opposite - people move to Texas (or Florida) not because media told them so, but because they want that stereotypical Texas lifestyle, and media shows the picture of these expats.
