  • After a crazy three weeks of the best volleyball players on the planet battling each other, one winner has emerged. Congratulations to Poland, who fought through adversity and uncertainty on their path to the gold medal. Now that we have had some time to reflect on the tournament, I review the final 6 and the world championship as a whole. I go into why I made the (wrong) predictions I did, talk about the final round of the tournament, and finally give suggestions on improvements that could be made for the next tournament.

    I am happy they won but what thrilled me the most was seeing Kurek play at such an incredible level!! Before, Kurek was strong, but inconsistent and his attacks were pretty monotonous. I don't know what miracles Heynen Worked but I hope Kurek keeps it up and remains this smart, versatile player he has shown himself to be. So many of his balls went in because he was actually LOOKING and SEEING.
    As for Italy, I think they were mostly eaten by pressure. Zaytzev in particular, I felt like he didn't know how to modify his attacks to make them successful so he was just adding more power and it wasn't working and he completely lost his head at some point.
    As for our commentators, they talk all the time so it may seem like they're saying important things but often they just go off on a tangent and talk about stuff completely unrelated to volleyball. But they DO know all the players, especially Polish players and e.g. that's how I learned Nowakowski was having back problems so severe they thought he wouldn't be able to play in the final. And one of the Polish commentators is Fabian Drzyzga's dad, his reaction to their win was beautiful :)

      Kurek really seemed to believe in himself, hope he keeps it going for the club season. Don't think I would be saying Kurek outplayed Zaytsev handily at the beggining of the tournament.

    journalist: 'You built consciously the team around Michał Kubiak. Did you regret it, when Poland couldn't handle the match against Argentina without him?'
    "And when Steve Jobs left, didn't Apple have problems as well? Every team has the leader. One. Because saying that you have f.ex. 3 leaders is in my opinion falsehood. It doesn't work that way. Most Valuable Player of World Championships is Bartosz Kurek, Most Valuable Player of this team is Michał Kubiak."
    -Vital Heynen
    And:
    'Other coaches have great players, I have a great team, able to play the very best match of the tournament in the Final.'
    Bartosz Kurek:
    'During our first conversation, coach said to me something very important: his paramount goal is to make a team which will be waiting impatiently for next year camp. And indeed, when we left bus in the Warsaw, everyone was saying: "Fucking shit, what a pity this has ended already". If we are healthy and hardworking, we will see each other in similar group next year. But now, in this team, we could last together for long months. Coach Heynen achieved his goal. We felt fantastic together, players with each others, with staff.'
    This few quotes (although I could quote muuuch more) are quite good summary why Poland won, and why they finally showed their potential.
    They have coach who not only believe in them but also believe them. Who is brutally honest, but thanks to this they feel than they can trust him. Who achieved his goal by making a TEAM which is ready to go through fire and water for eachothers. And they have captain who always believed they have potential for medals, who was so determined and dedicated he risked his health for a team and who is able to support and inspire everyone around him like nobody else.

    Agree with most, especially the format, way too many games.... Points being brought from round one make perfect sense and definitely promote teams with wider squads not just decent starting 6. USA team were awesome but weak in reception (Christenson was added value here making many balls" better" ) and very depending on powerful serving, also not much choice on the bench ( in my opinion, many may not agree ) . Being polish is not easy to comment on our performance but I think many of the teams paid too much attention to pre-world cup tournaments and Nations League. Fully agree when it comes to comments about commentators. Having two of them is well tested and working very well in Poland. Great review, thanks so much, been great to watch and listen ! Good luck

    Days before today, I was wondering what was the commentators' name, now you've answered my question. I think Clayton is a passionate guy who can make you get into the game, he narrates the sorroundings, plays, some predictions. I think he's quite enough to entertain, but it is true that more experts are needed.

    • @fiveonevolleyball8112
      @fiveonevolleyball8112  6 лет назад +2

      He would perfect as a play-by-play guy next to someone who follows the game closely and could provide interesting analysis. Like Mark Lebedew in the VNL finals

    I still could not get over the fact that USA did not win the tournament.. I truly believe that this is the championship for them to take.. Im completely disappointed that speraw did not make changes in crucial part of the semis.. It was obvious that holt, anderson and russell were checked in that game.. Speraw did not give ben patch or jeff jendryk an opportunity to play; they might be young or inexperienced but I think they are capable of producing big points and were not scouted as hard as the usual starters.. I think that made poland a champion because their coach is willing to gamble and give their younger players an opportunity to prove their selves..😞

      Volleyball is a team sport, so a couple of best players hardly makes a sure cut. I remember Heynen (Poland's coach) said something (just before the gold medal match) like he may not have the best of the best players but he sure has the best team. After all, Speraw has been with with Team USA for many years, so he might know their games best than any others. No?

    • @saliganchris
      @saliganchris 6 лет назад +2

      thesea19710426 well ben patch or jeff jendryk are in the line-up but were left as mere spectators in the semifinals.. But poland gambled, their middle blockers are i think under 21..

      Just like I say under some other video. USA solution if their system stops working is just keeping to that system, exactly opposite to Brazil and Poland. I think Americans think too much of themselves, that they suppose to win this tournament, this is the bad side of positive American thinking. They get cocky. Even after the final you can hear sparrow that this bronze medal means shit to him so there you go.

      Yeah....Arrogance, in any sport, does't help. Not only makes less fans but motivated your rivals to beat you.

    • @saliganchris
      @saliganchris 6 лет назад +1

      thesea19710426 i agree with all of your insights.. I can't understand why speraw brought 14 players when he would just let 7 or 8 players to play and delegate the rest as cheerleaders.. I dont like kiraly in the women's side but i think he is making a much better job in coaching, especially in allowing everyone to play.. I just hope knipe returns to coaching the us mens as he has more successes in major tournaments and produced the most recent champion in the us ncaa..

    Great video! I think the format is really good because on final 6 are the most consistant teams. If you are playing one match on highest level possible, and than play like amature team you dont have place in the finals. I dont know how much you have red about Poland at second round. It wasnt only Kubiak. They were like 5 6 even Kurek, so he was not strugling he was sick.

    I agree with the commentator. The format was too complicated and essentially unfair. Round-robin and then straight to elimination is better for players and fans. France got ripped off big time!!! Nice show!!! Keep up the good work!!! Oh and congrats to Poland, awesome showing especially Jurek!!!

      Well commemtator is good and has an enjoyable voice to listen to, maybe put someone who is more into the sports next to him.
      In the Netherlands we often have a good talker + Peter Blanche (1 time Dutch Olympic Champiom Setter who are a great duo.. in Italy there are 2 volleyball guys who both have histories and biases in the sports so I think our Dutch format is the best

    I very agree on the comment on commentary quality of VolleyballTV streaming. I watched like 6 or 7 games, and I haven't heard one interesting story there, almost no stats & more importantly, almost no preparation at all. On the other hand I don't think that 20€ is too much to ask for all-access streaming. 1 cinema ticket costs 7-10€, so I wouldn't say 20 is that much. Also, the quality was generally good, and there was a lot of replays (sometimes even too much I'd say).

      Fair points. The price isn't too bad especially when you include the women's championship as well. Still too high for casual fans and most teenagers/students though. My main thing with the complaints is that they are easy and inexpensive to fix, so why not fix them?

      The formula is even worse than men's. Almost all the strongest teams in one pool (Italy, China, Russia, USA) and one of them MUST say goodbye, while the other pool seems significantly weaker.
