Definitely agree with a lot of your choices - and also definitely plan to check “Skull” out. I believe the Death of Superman storyline was to hype the Lois and Clark tv show that aired the following year - yet, it was very well done. And, I like the Superman Returns part the best: having Superman pull out the two big guns (cos his powers weren’t fully recovered) was a very funny moment - poking fun at his Boy Scout image. I love Secret Wars - apparently quite a few do not - don’t understand why. I want to recommend Power Pack from the 1980s, first 20 issues or so; the original Sandman (1940s) series; and, the DreamWave comics GI Joe/Transformers story set in WWII. Thank you again for a great video!
Wasn't too sure what to expect but I thought your list would be full of titles I didn't know about. Glad I watched the whole thing. There were some titles I recognized, even a few I still have with me from the 90s! Quite the varied list. And a good video.
Ask and ye shall receive . So naturally I don't have anything resembling a top 25 list thought out myself . but I DO have some favorites I can pull off the top of my head .I am disqualifying The Lee and Kirby Fantastic Four and the Lee / Ditko/ Romita/Kane Spider-mans because there are simply too many to choose from . From DC , my favorite all time story is Batman : Cataclysm / Road to / No Man's Land .Reading Cataclysm really makes you feel as though you are living the nightmare with the citizens of Gotham .Very few stories manage to accomplish that (I DO wish they had thrown something in about the JLA being in another galaxy and unable to help though , as they could have saved thousands .And if you are IN a superhero universe ..)Still , as a self contained entity , it was gripping .Final Night is high on my list for many of the same reasons .Crisis on Infinite Earths has to be on there somewhere .John Byrne's Man of Steel and the first two years of his Superman run makes my list as it was just so different from what we had always gotten on Superman and I will forever maintain that Byrne's Superman is the best version in the characters history .Honorable mentions to the Teen Titans storyline that introduced the Adrian Chase Vigilante and the first Ra's al Ghul Batman story (232, 242-244 ) To Marvel ..My favorite list is dominated by Avengers runs . The Celestial Madonna saga #129-135 . Giant Size 2-4 . For me , the highlight was the death of Swordsman and how Steve Englehart made me care enough to feel bad about the death of a character who had previously been treated as little more than an afterthought (Forgot to include his Detective run withMarshall Rodgers in my DC list ) The Kree / Skrull war for it's epic grandeur and high stakes .The Avengers / Defenders war for being the first (and still the best) Superteam battle then team up . The Korvac saga , and the Count Nefaria 3 part story (164-166 ) The Fantastic Four storyline where Ben is "cured" of being the Thing .From being replaced by Power Man , the Liberty Legion Team Up , to the Galactus /High Evolutionary story .(although there is no way in hell it fits into continuity ) The three part Byrne Galactus storyline (242 -244 )with the heartbreak of Johnny Storm when Frankie Rate becomes his new herald . The Original clone saga , Bill Mantlo's run on the Hulk when Bruce Banner gets control of the Hulk , and unlike any story that had come before , this lasted almost two years . Realizing that after 43 years , there are just too many to mention off the cuff (although you're probably wondering at this point if this is EVER going to end ) Anyhoo , great video . I really enjoyed your list and the choices on it . Someday , we will have to do a live stream and blather on about our favorite stories in greater detail than a video and comment allows .Take care and see you on the next one .
Awesome, awesome selections Eric. I haven’t read some of those and I will have to check them out! I’m glad you enjoyed the video... I agree we will have to do a live stream... My goal for 2019 is to start doing some collaborations so I might have to bug you in the new year lol until next time my friend!
Walt Simonson's Thor, Incredible Hulk: Ground Zero, Peter David's Supergirl, Peter David's Captain Marvel, Peter David's Spider-man 2099 vol 1, Thundrbolts Vol 1- highly recommended, consistently the best read of the month during its run - Zemo the best villain in comics during this (not including the last few issues when it was gutted and transformed for Dark Reign), the Defalco/Ryan run of Fantastic Four. Green Lantern: Emerald Twilight leading into Kyle Rayner's run (if you thought people disliked Death of Superman this is the storyline that made GL fans the worst in comics, I actually loved it), Guy Gardner: Reborn. I'd also have Sleepwalker on my list. LOL
You're leaving out stuff like Deathlock from the 70's, Frank Miller's Daredevil run, Kirby's run on Captain America, the Micronauts, Warlock, Chris Clairmont and John Byrne's run on the X-Men, Neil Gaiman's run on Sandman. Check these out. Best of the best.
I will have to check some of these out... thanks for the suggestions... I know I have read millers run on Daredevil, but I liked born again a little better..I’m actually getting through Claremont and Byrne on x-men now. Thanks for the suggestions!
I think it's awesome that 'Kull the conquer ' is on your list. I recently found the trades in the bargain bin at my local comic shop for dirt cheap. They were a great read. Also, some brilliant artists on the series.
I know right!? Totally underrated series. I love it. So enjoyable! I am very happy to hear you enjoyed the video! Always a pleasure to hear from you Ron! Cheers!
Batman: Venom is my favorite comic of all time! Good to see someone else loved it too! Keep up the great work, all your videos are so entertaining, your personality is fun!
Thank you so much! Glad to hear you are enjoying the channel. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and reach out to share some positive feedback. Hope to hear from you again on another video my friend!
I do feel like Sleepwalker always caught a raw deal. He came out right before the comic glut of the 90's and got killed by it. It was an imaginative series and worth checking out. On a side note: Sleepwalker has returned to Marvel in the Infinity Wars series and managed to get a mini-series out of it. I've actually been enjoying the comic market lately more than I have in decades. I know a lot of critics say there is nothing coming out worth reading, but I feel that is a harsh judgment. I've been a huge DC reader this year and I'm starting to get into Marvel again. Immortal Hulk is my go-to monthly I won't miss. Great video!
Yea I agree totally, Sleepwalker did get a raw deal but it’s such a good title... glad to hear Sleepwalker got a miniseries. I haven’t been reading a lot of new stuff lately but may have to check out some of what you suggested... thanks for watching and commenting. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Dante - Thanks for doing this, mostly sharing your likes, but that's okay. That you chose 8 Bat-stories kinda puts a slant on the listings. I have to say that there was only one of your choices that would make my own 25. I do enjoy your videos, your presentation and passion for the medium is evident, keep 'em coming.
Great list! Also, may I recommend Frank Chos Shanna the She Devil, Sword of Azreal, Heart of Darkness( featuring Wolverine, Punisher and Ghost Rider) or Tintin and the Unicorn? Also, could you possibly do a top 10 or 20 fantasy comics? Such as Red Sonja, Kull, The Hobbit( yes there was beautiful watercolor comic) Fables, etc!
Oh great suggestion! I’m sure I will get around to doing top fantasy comics for sure! And thanks for those awesome suggestions.. will have to check out those titles. Thanks for watching and commenting as always!
Those Jim Lee X-men issues are like Shakespeare compared with modern books. The John Bolton issues of Kull were my favourites, I think they were specials or a limited series?
Hi. Really nice video.Btw Dante, i wonder if you could help with some really good tomb of dracula issues besides of the 10 th which i can t afford. Cheers and take care!
Hey there Emil! Thanks for reaching out! Great selection there with Tomb of Dracula, I love that series. I personally have read the first 11 issues which I absolutely loved. If you are looking simply read, check out the trades which are pretty reasonable. Collecting wise, I don’t know what your budget is, but I would try to shoot for the first 15 or so issues except 10. The series is pretty collectible and I think you should still be able to get no 1 for under 100. If you just want to read you can read them online for free... that is what I am doing with early issues of amazing spidey right now, just reading online..I will one day get around to reading the whole Dracula series, but you really can’t go wrong with any issues from the series. I hear the whole thing is great! Hope this helps. Cheers!
As a teen I could not wait for the next episode of Nth Man. 1 to 6... after flame out. Most great stories get to 10 issues like Spawn aftet crash and burn a new story is needed. And yes Batman stories takes the trophy. White knight is missing and there are a few Punisher vs. Daredevil that was captivating
The death of superman was really good. I didn't realize how important superman was until I was 13 and tearing up while reading it. All-star superman has a similar affect.
Comic book stores vary one I been to had some as low as a few for free with also some 3 for a dollar, another nothing less than a dollar, another nothing less than 2 dollars. All three places most where higher than those prices though. Free comics likely only till supply last but can't say for sure.
I'll limit myself to two suggestions: First, if you've never read "Master Race" from the first issue of the EC title Impact in 1955, let me just say that it is arguably the best single piece EC ever published. You can read the entire 8-page story here -- from-dusk-till-drawn.com/2016/05/02/master-race-by-bernie-krigstein-usa-1955/ (Make sure to use the on-screen features to enlarge the pages to maximum size.) At the other end of the "people getting what they deserve" spectrum is one of my fave Carl Barks duck stories, "A Christmas for Shacktown," from 1952. Though I wasn't able to find a website with a printed copy of the entire 32-page story, here's a RUclips video that shows all the panels, with appropriate musical accompaniment -- ruclips.net/video/2DhqERuJlAk/видео.html Enjoy!
I was actually just thinking about how I can’t wait for the new movie! Spawn is a treat right!? I love it. Enjoy the rest of it. Always a pleasure miles! Love the new Instagram page Btw!
Batman is not one of my favorites as a character but i like way stories are written The KIlling joke was my first comic, absolute classic. My favorite is The Batman Aventures : Mad love, in fact a Harley Quinn story, very carton art. You made me more interessed in batman comics at all i'll check some of the list here.
Awesome! I can see what you are saying...I’m not a huge fan of the x-men but there are a lot of x-men stories I love. Glad you’ll check out more Batman, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Thanks for tuning in and commenting. Cheers!
I've been looking for a comic book but I don't know the name of it or which company it was by. I remember a guy who wore blue tights and some villain who wore a trench coat or blazer and at one point he's holding a screwdriver. I've asked people about it and nobody knows what I'm talking about. I remember the art work being really good like something Todd Mcfarlane would draw.
I figured it out. It's called "Elementals Special". The guy in blue was called "Vortex". I knew I probably wasn't remembering things in great enough detail but I eventually found it on google. You'd probably like it.
This was a great list Dante. I was really surprised with the number 1 pick, and you made a very heterogenous mix of comics from different eras. Most of them are my favorite, like Born Again, The Killing Joke, Alan Moore Swamp Thing and Jim Lee X-men. Some stories I also liked: Neil Gaiman's Sandman, Ennis, Dillon and company's Marvel Knights Punisher, Barry Windsor Smith's Weapon X. I also liked the New Avengers and I liked the Reign of the Supermen more than Death and Funeral, But this is a pretty great list. Looking forward for more videos. One suggestion would be the best Stan Lee stories, though you may have to research on them.
Hey Brian! Great to hear from you again. I was so pleased to hear that you enjoyed the video and the picks. I really like your picks as well... especially Weapon X.. that was awesome. I have your suggestion for Stan Lee stories down in the book. When I get around to researching it I will do it. Thanks again for watching and commenting!
I would have added the Venom INC storyline it's rather new but a huge step up from the garbage 2003 run on venom and the mediocre Carnage unleashed series of the 90s though some of the 90s venom stories were good
I think a story I recommend is batman hush because it was the first comic I ever read and just love the story.
