What got me into Elden Ring was finishing the Dark Souls trilogy.
Played Dark Souls a decade before Elden Ring. Loved the games and Elden Ring was supposed to be the next big thing.
Elden Ring was probably the biggest disappointment and overrated game in the entire Souls collection. It went open world just for the sake of going open world when that trend has been tired since 2015.
The game indicates where to go but when you go there you get destroyed by the boss. So then you explore around to level up(GRIND, let's call it what it is). And the other bosses you find in the very first area(Limgrave) are gank fights.
BOTH of them. There is no content in the open world. It's just a lot of empty space wher eyou collect flowers.
The entire game I felt like I was underleveled or overleveled. I never once felt like I was going the right direction. There are no quest logs to keep track of other quests.
Elden Ring commits insane sins that other games would be trashed for.
Unfortunately these games have garnered a fanbase of people that base their entire personality on beating these games and instead of calling out its faults, the majority will say "git gud" because it reinforces their own ego the same way beating a hard game does(Or a game that has a reputation for being hard).
From Software has been using the same formula since 2009 and their fanbase never calls them out on it but the moment Rockstar or Bethesda use the same formula for their games, From Software fans come running to tell everyone that developers are not innovative and just recycle the same crap while going back to Elden Ring which is literally just open world Dark Souls which is literally just Demon's Souls.
Elden Ring is not a bad game but it's far from a 10/10.
I still like the Souls games but as long as the fanbase lets Miyazaki/FromSoft get away with never improving actual issues with the games(Input Reading, Stun locks, Mob spam), we'll just keep getting more of it.
Elden Ring is one the weaker titles for me. It's on par with Dark Souls II I would say.
Yes, I have finished the game for anyone getting ready to type something dumb like "git gud". I stand by everything I said.
This review of the game is absolutely fair because they are the same problems I had when playing it. By the end of the game I was so tired of everything I just wanted to finish it so I could stop playing the game.

For me it's weaker than even DS2. The unfleshed-out open world & repetitive content, bad npc quests, and unsatisfying end-game bosses sour the experience by mid-to-end game. For eg. Malenia was hard, but not fun. I took less time to beat her than Isshin in Sekiro, because I ganked her using Mimic Tear to zero health before she could use her bs Waterfowl move. But I had far more fun with Isshin.

Mass respect Eddie, I feel pretty much the same way about the game, as soon as the honey moon period goes away the game falls down quick
Compared to even DS2 I feel like is worse, prettier yes, more polished maybe, longer definitely, more contet maybe (quantity over quality) but the main issue is that Miyazaki keeps wanting to one up every game and doesn't know when to stop, it doesn't help the fact that he has a pretty big part of the fanbase boot licking him 24/7 so he actually believes every decision he makes is good, the games have grown stale and they dont know what to do and this is the culmination of all that, anything innovative in bloodborne and sekiro was thrown out in favor of the same safe and boring style that does not work well with a wolrd this big and repetitive and much less with the bosses in this game.
I went into this game thinking I'd get darksouls 3 + Bloodborne + Sekiro but with a big world filled with dungeons and memorable bosses and I got nerfed DS3 rolls, a combat that punishes you for being aggressive, a big map with recycled content left and right and bosses that attack faster than sekiro bosses but also do 15 second long strings of attacks and give you 2 or 3 seconds to retaliate but not without sucker punching you while you do so.

Elden Ring benefited from it being a meme challenge game. After its announcement trailer, the concept of Souls games being the hardest games caught fire, so when the game came out, the reviewers hyped it even more for its difficulty. Prior to this game reviews panned games for being too difficult, by using phrases like "Trial and Error". Sekiro had a better story and better combat system, but didn't have the "Right of passage" meme behind it like Elden Ring. My vote for hardest modern game goes to Ninja Gaiden Black.

The bosses are recycled incredibly often, especially frustrating when one of the games selling points were over 100 bosses.
The gameplay is just terrible, straight up. Your character is slow and weak, unless you get rivers of blood!
When most gameplay guides literally just tell you to respec to RoB to beat difficult bosses, that should tell you something..
The bosses are way too fast, the camera is STILL HORRIBLE. Lockon is basically non functional on several bosses.
Once I got to Fire Giant I quit playing. Absolute slog to try to fight it. Absurd health pools.
Notably also Torrent was HORRIDLY designed. Horse combat is incredibly terrible! No I Frames, even jump dodge is very inconsistent and has few visual indicators as to when it will work.

And after all this time, still i can’t get a parry or dodge timed right more than about 1 in 10 goes (ie im dead) In bloodbourne i could do it about 50%. This week is a terribly inaccessible game as noted by the posts and on various websites with super basic question like ‘how do i equip arrows’. It does not explain things anywhere near enough for people who arent hugely into these games and the lack of pause button is the inexcusable when playing offline.

There are one shot mechanics late in the game that only four enemies have enemies are repetitive at some points, but it makes sense. Why would they add a new character for every enemy, if you’re constantly staggered, you have the low poise and need to wear stronger armor. Every enemy is not going to get immediately staggered when you hit them once enemy reach is not a problem if you know how to dodge if you don’t upgrade your weapons yes, everything is bullet sponge but if you upgrade your weapons, then no I don’t know what potato movement means so we’re gonna skip that. I find the movement in the game fine I don’t feel it’s a grind first personally definitely the least grinding out of all the soulsgame’s. It’s an open world game meaning you have to go find stuff you don’t even have to beat the first boss. You could use the side castle gate to get around Stormville and go get stuff from Leonia if you want, the main thing is that the game isn’t bad the people who played are bad if you don’t wanna spend an hour exploring then yeah you’re not gonna get far and if you ram your head against one boss for the entire game, then probably not gonna have fun it’s open world you’re supposed to explore and get stronger not beat your head against the wall

  • @Gamerprice40

@Manny Magnus Garcia After watching your thoughts on Elden Ring, I think you would have a much better experience playing a souls game if you go with Bloodborne. Personally I think Bloodborne is easily the most enjoyable for non soul game players. The gameplay is very balanced and fair while retaining that difficulty souls games have and you’ll truly feel the reward for beating each boss (although there are a fair amount of bosses that are easy). The gameplay in bloodborne is very rewarding for almost all play styles in that game because the core combat is refined and well designed. Elden Ring’s gameplay really isn’t balanced all that well and its not enjoyable if you don’t play it the way it was designed to be played. My biggest problem with Elden Ring was how centered it was around magic usage which made basic melee combat redundant to an extent since bosses attack nonstop with little to no openings for a good punish. The second you start using all the FP based abilities like summons and ashes of war and spells, you realize the reason the bosses were designed the way they were in order to accommodate how powerful the tools they give you actually are. Just swinging your weapon at bosses and even a few specific enemies in Elden Ring isn’t enough, you really gotta use at least some of the tools they give you to have any kind of enjoyment with the game. The main attraction with Elden Ring is the amount of bosses and content that is in the base game, that’s what is praised so much with this game. Gameplay unfortunately is the biggest issue with the ER, it focuses too heavily on abilities and doesn’t reward skillful play enough for players like myself who like a challenging fight that is still fair.

@@sunbro2522 Don’t blame you, Elden Ring is a bit overhyped by souls players at times because it’s finally something new to the genre which is the open world. But that really only appeals to certain players because the game requires a ridiculous amount of hours to complete and far more to 100%. Some players may prefer linear souls games like Bloodborne because it’s far more simple and easier to understand. Elden Ring is far more sophisticated and it takes way longer to fully understand the gameplay and mechanics of the game. So it’s really a different style of game, plus it doesn’t really help that the gameplay is heavily focused around magical attacks and overleveling yourself to progress rather than true balance. It can be really difficult for some souls players to adjust to Elden Ring because it’s so vastly different.

I've been playing these games since the first Dark Souls and rank Bloodborne among my favorite games on the PS4. That said, I agree with you. The Dark Souls style does not make sense in an open world. Aimlessly wondering the world to get into fights diminishes the suspense and there aren't enough interesting rewards and environments that compel me to explore it. I also think this has the worst lore of any From game I've played.
I made it pretty far -- the giants area -- and quit. I only got that far because I was playing with a friend who moved across the Atlantic, and we both finally had it. Co-op was fun for a while, but I rather just have a Zoom call.
And the From fanboys always will try to convince you that you're playing the game wrong or you don't like it because you suck. I've beaten every From game I've played, and I think they're the most overrated studio out there. Aside from Bloodborne and Sekiro, they keep iterating on the same game since Demon's Souls. They used a massive open world with two cool areas to connect the Dark Souls dungeons -- wow.

I can understand someone not liking Elden Ring. It’s not for everyone and is very niche. However, from all the other games you pointed out, it seems to me you’re not a big RPG person in general which is totally fine, everyone has their tastes. My guess (coming from someone who plays many RPGs all the time) is this game was made for those who love the genre. The story unfolds as you play, the world seems empty at first but the more you play, the more you realize it’s full of dungeons, NPCs, hidden treasures, bosses that come out of nowhere etc. It’s truly a big leap in the genre and set the bar high for RPGs going forward because of the massive amount of customization/build variety.
Like I said, it’s not for everyone and I have lots of friends who tried it and weren’t into it, but as a long time gamer, you should know there will always be games that completely redefine a genre…THAT is Elden Ring.

@SwiftBMF I’ve noticed that’s how FromSoftware games are. They don’t give much direction because the main focus is to explore and find things yourself. As far as gear goes, you can honestly use one weapon the whole game. Every weapon or armor you get in the game can be used all the way to the end if you wanted to do that because every piece of gear is viable to beat the game.

    • @Gamerprice40
      @Gamerprice40 Год назад +2

As a FromSoftware fan who has played a lot of their souls games, and absolutely loved Bloodborne and Sekiro, I can understand if some parts of Elden Ring was a bit disappointing or enjoyable but the game isn’t inherently bad. I think Elden Ring’s biggest issue is the gameplay honestly, it just doesn’t have that balance that Bloodborne and Sekiro had and it’s likely because FromSoftware had to make some sacrifices as a result of the abundant of content that is in the game and how much of an open world game it is. Coming from these previous two titles (not including Demons Souls remake) the gameplay feels so disconnected between the enemies and the player itself. Bosses like Margit, The Fell Omen feel so difficult and frustrating because the core gameplay wasn’t designed well enough to fit the general pace of these boss fights. Instead it feels like FromSoftware made summons, ashes of war, weapon arts, and spells so OP to compensate the unbalance between the basic melee combat and the boss fights.
It’s almost as if there’s no middle ground with Elden Ring due to this, it’s either way too easy if you decide to use any of the FP attacks as your main source or damage or too difficult if you refuse to use any of it. The game just wasn’t designed around a melee only play style, it’s evident with the amount of FP attacks and tools they give you throughout the game. Unfortunately its just the way Elden Ring was designed on a pure gameplay standpoint and for people who don’t want to play it the way devs intended for you to play it, you’re not going to have a fun time even if you manage to beat the game. It’s simply not enjoyable to play without making use of the FP unless you get some ridiculous build with a great scaling weapon that goes with it but again, that’ll just make the game very easy. Because of this if I’m being brutally honest, I truly believe God of War Ragnarok deserved GOTY over Elden Ring due to its inferior gameplay design. God of War Ragnarok does not have any major issues at all with any aspect of that game while Elden Ring sacrificed gameplay for incredible and abundant content.

    • @Gamerprice40
      @Gamerprice40 Год назад +2

@Andrew Hernandez Personally, I didn’t enjoy Elden Ring as much as I did Bloodborne and Sekiro, and it all comes down to gameplay. And like you, I’ve played many RPG games especially FromSoftware titles. But yeah I agree with you on some points, Elden Ring does so much right as far as overall content goes and the whole open world aspect of it and it’s definitely not a bad game at all. Unfortunately though I think FromSoftware took a big step back on the core gameplay when you compare it to Bloodborne and Sekiro that made its main attraction the gameplay. Those two games truly evolved the gameplay within the genre and it wasn’t your typical sluggish dark souls gameplay we see all the time. Elden Ring’s main attraction is really the amount content available to keep players busy and entertained. But when you talk pure gameplay, Elden Ring just doesn’t live up to everything else it did so well because there’s such a huge disconnect between the melee combat and the pace of the boss fights. It’s really a game focused around FP usage and magic as almost everything you acquire aside from new weapons consumes FP and for players who rather have that close up melee approach, it’s going to feel incredibly unrewarding (unless you make an OP build) because of how the bosses were designed. Bosses like Margit just don’t leave room for rewarding punishes if you don’t make use of your FP, and it’s frustrating because you have to wait and wait until they do their one or two heavy attacks that have slow recovery and even then you’ll only get 2-3 free hits in max.
Due to how the general gameplay is designed, I actually don’t think there’s as much variety as people make it out to be because it’s all going to come down to FP abilities again in the long run or maxing out one or two stats on your build. There’s also no middle ground that balances out the gameplay like BB and Sekiro did so well because FP abilities make Elden Ring laughably easy but without FP abilities, the game is ridiculous tedious with it’s difficulty/patience requirements so it’s not going to be a fun experience overall even if you beat all the bosses the game has to offer.
TLDR; In a nutshell, Elden Ring’s gameplay isn’t all that satisfying to the average melee player when compared to Sekiro and Bloodborne because it’s too centered around FP usage. The game is either too easy or too hard because there’s no balance between gameplay and bosses. But Elden Ring is incredibly rich in content and there’s plentiful to do in the game, and just truly incredible art designs from the environments to the aesthetics of bosses. To enjoy Elden Ring, you’re going to have to accept the way the gameplay was designed and adapt to it.

@SwiftBMF You don't know where to go? The game tells you. It doesn't put I giant arrow there, but it still makes it pretty easy to know where you should go.
If you look at a grace, there is a gold stream of light pointing you in the direction of the first major boss to fight. It's even easier to see this on the map. Multiple NPCs will tell you this. If you actually spent 20 hrs without knowing this, that is a problem with you, not the game.
As for gear, you find most of it in chests or from bosses. How you managed to play for 20 hrs without finding any new gear is beyond me.

So I'd like to sideline this with my own experience with some other games. I cannot get into rogue-likes. I have tried a lot of games people consider masterpieces like hades, risk of rain 2, binding of isaac, ftl. Everytime I try these games I inevitably get bored. I really don't like the rng, I don't enjoy how the progress gets reset everytime, I don't like dying to a boss and then having to redo entire sections. That being said, I am never gonna use this to say that any of these games are bad. Theres a big difference between personal distaste for a game and the game having really bad faults. I played the shit out of destiny but that was objectively not a good game. It was a predatory game with good gunplay and the raids were nice, but had layers of unfair rng and grind.
What I am not gonna do is throw up a video saying "hades is a bad game, heres why" and then delve into how my first 5 hours werent fun, how I didn't like the rng or the fact you lose almost everything when you die. That's what you basically did. You threw up a video saying elden ring sucks, then gave anecdotes on why it doesn't personally appeal to you. You don't like the minimal direct storytelling, you don't like the world design, you don't like that the game has challenging encounters. I think you are expecting elden ring to be like god of war or spiderman when it just isn't.

Elden Ring to me feels like a mish-mash of ideas that were either thrown around from past titles or were never fully developed and it also feels like the team that designed bosses and enemies never interacted to the team making the player mechanics. So it feels like a weird mess where I have no f**king clue what actual game I'm supposed to be playing. (the only games I've yet to play and beat from these devs are Sekiro and the new Armored Core. Just thought I'd throw it out there in case someone says this game is not for me, no I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to be part of the target audiance for this game)

Okay, so there's a lot to unpack in the video, but felt like I'd say a few things after watching the whole thing.
First off I wanna say that the route you took with this conversation was well done and not antagonistic in the slightest! Really good video despite being a big fromsoft fan. Also wanna say as clarification that there was a tutorial at the start of the game, but many new players missed that part that taught you quite a bit on how to play. They ended up adding extra stuff in an early patch to emphasize this alternate path so people wouldn't miss it later on.
One thing I did wanna talk about was the concept of elden ring being "boring". Truth be told, the word was so over utilized that it was a bit hard to understand what you meant at some point, but what it sort of sounds like is that it comes down to your lack of familiarity with the genre.
Elden ring isnt an easy game to pick up, especially if your expertise is elsewhere like retro and more arcade based games. The comparison you used was a side scroller shooter game that was difficult yes, but the difference is that there are tons of side scroller shooter bullet hell esk games like it that, and although they may be different, they can still have some notable similarities like power ups, single direction of shooting, etc.
The only games that are similar to Elden Ring are basically other games made from Fromsoft themselves such as dark souls. Its a genre that was made so notorious by this concept that the term "souls like" was coined for any game that had similar fundamentals.
With that said, there's nothing wrong with Elden Ring not being a game you're interested in. The game became a massive hype train and was basically the game that brought the Fromsoft franchise into the mainstream which is most likely why it caught the attention of people like you who don't normally play these games.
But that doesn't make it a bad game by any means. Elden Ring on a gameplay level is an insanely well polished masterpiece with a lot of thought put into it on a world level. It utilizes very small details as way of catching your attention and keeping you on the correct path. It doesn't give you much context why you're getting hunted by anything that breaths, but you put the pieces together through great bits of lore on your travels.
I think it's just worth mentioning that I myself do not like shooter games like call of duty. I find those games to be boring and not interesting in the slightest, but it would be unfair of myself to say that they are bad games because the concept of bad is very subjective unless it's a game like anthem.
Either way, good video and keep making videos!

I tried Edlen Ring a few months ago and did not like it at all. I booted it up a week ago as I found a very good beginer tutorial that put you on the right track and it's way more fun now. The thing with Elden Ring is that you have to know what to do at very beginning and the game does not really help you with that (which is fine, it's souls like and I don't intend to complain about it). As soon as you have some decent stuff this game is such more better.

Jeez R-Type, haven't thought of that in a while. Yeah that game was awesome :)
And yes I can totally understand someone finding Elden Ring boring. And don't let anybody tell you that "This is waht FromSoft games are like, you just don't get it, you're supposed to discover the story on your own". That's fanboy bullshit. Dark Souls 1 CLEARLY communicated the story and why the world is the way it is and what you're supposed to do. NPCs quite specifically told you what you need to do and in what order and why. Anybody claiming otherwise is simply lying. Elden Ring has been repeatedly critisized even by FromSoft fans who played all their games, for having the most cryptic and uninteresting story with the least clear motivation as the player character. So you are NOT alone with that, don't let the downvotes give you that impression.
This game can only be enjoyed to the fullest if you enjoy the exploration and gameplay enough to ignore the fact that it basically has no real story. It has world building sure, but the story is almost non existend. And JRR Martin has clearly stated repeatedly that his only involvement was exactly in that: the world building. He didn't write the story of the game, he wrote the BACKSTORY of the game, he wrote what happened thousands of years before the game starts. He had nothing to do with what takes place while you're playing. He created the lore, not the plot.
And I can understand that some people who enjoy open world games find Elden Ring empty and boring. There is no actual life happening, everything is just a combat area, everything is there to be killed. THere's nothing in the game but enemies and the occasional NPC, which thanks to the huge Open World, is usually missed by players (which is why they had to add map markers later in a patch, which is ironic because Souls fanboys shouted at people like you claiming their games don't need map markers because they have superior quest design).
Souls games don't offer anything but combat with very very little to get the player used to this combat. If you don't enjoy a world that has nothing to offer but targets to be killed, then indeed Elden RIng is not interesting at all.
And I disagree with the fanboys that this is simply the souls formula. Jedi Fallen Order has exactly the same game mechanics. You go through levels, you have hard to master combat and you kill stuff and progress in between these checkpoints. If you die, you need to get back to where you were to re-claim your XP. Exactly the same formula. HOwever that game combined it with much better combat balancing, with much better bosses that instead of doing stupid delay attacks or roll catches actually tested the skills learned against regular enemies. Still hard and difficult to master, but way more consistent, intersting and ... motivating, because there was an actual story behind WHY you were fighting the boss. And omg... it even has a difficulty setting that makes parry times easier for people that don't have 3 hours evey day to play games and train against a single boss 40 times in a row. And omg it doesn't break the game at all, who would have thought.
FromSoft fans really need to get over themselves and accept that while FromSoft has contributed some fantastic things to game design, their games are far from perfect and have a lot of mechanics that are completely outdated and clunky by today's standards, and could do a much better job at creating a compelling storyline for players for who simply killing things for 80 hours just isn't enough to stay invested.
If you DO want to get back into the game, you really need to play it for the world exploration, for finding new areas and new enemies. THe world can be beautiful and has lots of cool areas to discover that are hidden. But you just need to be able to get over the absence of much of any story and the fact that EVERYTHING on the map aside from the very very very few NPCs that you will run into, will try to kill you. You need to enjoy the combat system and invest a bit of time to learn it. Elden RIng has mechanics that can make things easier for you.
But if you simply cannot get into an action RPG that offers you little in terms of story and motivation (and don't let fanboys argue this point, this game simply doesn't have much of a story and even the better quests are super easy to mess up and not well presented at all) then I doubt the game will ever draw you in. This game's fun part lies in exploring the map for the map itself, not for what's in it, and for engaging combat. And I agree, that this is probably not enough for a lot of people.
THe bosses are also frustratingly hard unless you have the time to invest, or the build to cheese them, so it's likely you'll get stuck on some bosses for a long time, and without a proper story as to why you're even fighting them, that can quickly drain your motivation.
In my experience there's different types of RPG playes. There's people who want a blank character and just explore a world, like Skyrim, and even ignore the main story. Then there's people who don't care much about character builds and prefer an established character that they can take over and enjoy a beautifully crafted story, like Witcher 3, and then there's the dungeon crawlers that want a simple but fun combat system and just explore dungeons, kills tons of stuff with impressive effects and get tons of loot, like the Diablo series, and then there's people who want to craft a build and test it against a challenging combat system that throws more and more challenges at you in beautifully crafted levels that however don't offer much else aside from that combat.. that's the souls games and Elden Ring.
And there is absolutely nothing wrong with not having fun with Elden Ring, I for example have zero fun playing Diablo type games. I don't see the point in them, nor did I ever understand what's supposed to be fun about Skyrim. I enjoy a good story too, so Witcher or Mass Effect are more my thing, and while I did enjoy Elden Ring, the difficulty also got too frustrating at times and felt like the game didn't respect my time, so I stopped for a while and later finished the game with a build better suited to cheesing some bosses because I am also too old and busy to be bothered to spend hours on a single boss anymore. Not my kind of fun either, not anymore. I'm no teenager anymore that can spend his entire day playing games, just like you.

Expecting a linear, handheld story is why you don’t like this game. Elden ring is not linear in its story and it is unclear but the lore in this game is so dense and detailed most people miss it. The storytelling in this game is unlike most games.
Calling the game boring is also the worst thing I’ve heard. I have finished the game at 130 hours and I have loved every moment of it. There’s so much to do and explore and the rewards are satisfying and unique, fighting bosses and learning the moves is challenging but rewarding when it pays off. You clearly have not experienced this game.
As for the difficulty- you simply aren’t very good after watching your gameplay. That’s okay, because no one is great when they start out but without trying to get good you can’t judge this game.
    a) you are spam rolling, which doesn’t work, you need to time your them well.
    b) you are not locking on to an enemy so your hits are missing
For a run-down of why you are being attacked, you are a tarnished, one of many, who’s goal is to collect shards of the Elden Ring to repair it and become Elden Lord. The soldiers who are attacking you are protecting a castle where one of the shards of the ring lies.
Please, watch some gameplay or a review of Elden Ring because you obviously do not understand this game.

the world of elden ring is vast, beautiful and interesting, this makes me keep playing it even though I don't like it gameplay-wise.
in elden ring players are meant to build their characters completely manually. In contrast to other games the levels are done automatically and players are only required to choose new powers. My main complaint is, the runes at the beginning of the game are too few. There should be a normal mode that differentiates, for example 5x more rune value.
Second, most good weapons or magic cannot be obtained at the beginning, players have to pick them up in other places far away, this makes the game so unbalanced.
In short, players must have at least 1 full month so they can enjoy playing Elden Ring, which not many have that much free time.

I'd rather they have made the game world 25% smaller and maybe not overtune the shit out of the later encounters for the sake of difficulty which is directly in opposition to the philosophy of the souls games which has always been 'outrageously difficult but possible'

Great video and I share the same opinion. I got Elden Ring not too long after its release, beat it, got all the achievements and kept playing for more than 500hs. But, man what a pain it was to try to redo my journey after the first time. The game just felt boring, as you said, even before the end of the first journey, but at the second time, I couldn't take it anymore. Tried to use mods to see if it could get some of it's shine back but nothing works.
The greatest mistake that makes Elden Ring bad is simply the fact that it went open world. That decision broke the game.

wow... you really test people out with that title XD. but... that is actually the Elden Ring experience. I have to say I come from games like Skyrim, Ghost Recon, The Division, DayZ, etc... and when I knew about Elden Ring I was just a bit meh. I have never ever played a souls game. But this was it. I had to try. I wanted a game that would challenge me. That would frustrate me and bring me to the old days of gaming. those where you couldnt solve the resident evil puzzles, where you will die over and over again in Tomb Raider, the feeling of accomplishment when you beat Soul Reaver or simply just had to translate the game from english to spanish (since I live in Mexico was hard for le with some ps1 games).
Elden Ring made me feel like a little child again. Not understanding the genre, the complexity, had to look on internet for some stuff on how to beat a boss or learning patterns was just insane. Been affraid of the night time cause it was a more hostile territory. And the feeling of every new single area having this new music theme... Altus is just breath taking. As a musician I can say that being a story teller with a track is much more complicated than just making a score for a particular escene. Elden Ring really means everyrhing to me and made me learn a lot about myself...
So sorry didnt work for you. But who knows... maybe if you face it as a little kid... just like old days when we had to look on internet or aimply try again until you make it. You migjt realize this is not just a game... is a humbling experience.
    Stay safe bro :)

Getting George Martin to write the story for a Souls-esque game (where the details are released in dribs and drabs) is like hiring a world class chef to prepare the club sandwiches and pretzels for your casual get-together; sure, you're getting quality, but it's not very fulfilling (plus, it's overkill).

I too feel the same way about this game I don’t think it deserves goty. Ragnarok should be the winner that year because everything just feels right about that game both gameplay and story wise. ER looks great hands down but the gameplay is not good tbh it needs improvement. The battle system is boring not exciting. The boss fights have cool movesets and punishing but your character only has limited boring movesets and it’s really hard to get satisfied on any fights. U can get your char to grind and get stronger and then just do the same boring hack slash moves or just spam and cheese the bosses lol. It’s not a perfect game imho

Hey man ! Im so late to this😅. Cool video, i get your point, really i do. I love the game for what it is : you're a random dude, on your way to kill demi-gods. Thats story enough for me right there, and i get that it is not enough for you !
Though from the gameplay you've shown, it looked like you played for maybe 2 hours tops , and did not know how to lock onto enemies. Im just assuming things here. Maybe you couldve enjoyed the gameplay more had you learned the basics a bit more, explored more than that one spot you were stuck in?
I myself wanted to sell the game after raging for 4hours on the first boss. Thought the game was shit because i died too much.. so i went elsewhere, level up, explored the world, got hooked, came back, and beat his ass !
Thats Elden Ring. That feeling right there 🤌 i hope you try to play it again and enjoy it !
Cheers 👍 oh, and try jumping.

I can understand, yes it's hard, it's confusing, but the thing is is that you're not looking in the right places, most exciting areas are hidden and plenty of dungeons which are hidden also lore is not given to you like GoW it's all hidden, it's just that GoW spoon feeds the mechanics, puzzles, lore that's the difference, it's all hidden, so you need to keep moving on and get runes to level up, it even explains why the enemies are aggro in lore, plus you can just skip the hard optional bosses.
At first, I got annoyed, but then I kept persevering, the more I kept going, the more mechanics I learnt and I was pleased to not have some voice reminding me what to do every second (looking at you Atreus) and the lore is really in-depth once you analyse your environment, most lore is actually hidden in spell descriptions and weapon descriptions and eventually, you understand everything that's going on. The reason why people like it's because it's a refresher from the modern movie format of games which are 70% cutscene and 30% gameplay, as you said you like old games and those games are what people miss, actually games not movies, you can tell since GoW won all the awards important for a film but not for a game but in the term of time, yeah I understand, this game is not for the average casual, I'm not saying it's not for casuals, just takes a little learning and memorisation.

I'm so sick of fromsoft fans throwing around the term "spoon feed". Just because something is difficult and unclear DOES NOT MAKE IT GOOD! I have a degree in English literature, so I know what demanding AND quality actually looks like. It also means I know what pretentious wannabe "creatives" with their heads up their ass look like. ER's sensibilities when it comes to story and quest design reminds me much more of the garbage that those types would churn out. ER has S-tier art direction and enemy design, I'll give it that.

I see elden ring as a raw spicy pepper, and god of war as mildly spicy ketchup, you can interpret that how yo want, im a big fan of the souls games and like them because of the challenge they come with, however I do think that elden ring can be boring some times, especially because there is no direct engagement with the world in other meaningful ways other than fighting, and very very rarely coming across an npc with vague dialog, that approach worked really well in the smaller worlds but the big one is lacking, and a lot of times because there is almost no "guidence" it feels empty

I wish we could get better at understanding the difference between "I don't like this" and "This is bad". The game is objectively good. You may not personally like it, but that doesn't mean it's bad. I suppose it could be waived off as semantics, but it really does generate unnecessary argument.
The statement at 5:58 is a myth that was debunked by this very game. The level of approachability absolutely brought in a lot of new players, just like BG3 did with another style of game that was believed to be more niche. Tons of new players were brought in.
It's completely understandable and valid to want more direction in a game, but you have to realize the world is bigger than the space between you and the tv/computer screen. I'm a person too, as is every other gamer. There's a very large portion of us who want less direction and more exploration. A true sense of discovery. Some of us want to follow a road and have no idea where it leads. Find a cave hiding behind some trees completely on our own.
I know there's an audience that doesn't enjoy gaming without a UI chauffeuring us around, and that's completely fair. Doesn't mean it's bad.

For the title you probably should've stuck with "Elden Ring is boring" or "Why I didn't like Elden Ring" since that keeps things SUBJECTIVE and i can respect that. Now, if you say in your title the game's BAD i'm expecting some OBJECTIVE arguments which is why i clicked on it. Didn't really hear any though. The production quality of the video is really nice btw. Props and good luck.

    • @PersonalMagnusGames
      @PersonalMagnusGames  Год назад +1

Thanks a lot! I wrote down some notes on the title. When I spoke on the points on why it's a bad game...it's something I believe, but it is SUBJECTIVE. A bad game can be a good game to someone else. Objective arguments, to your point, were limited, but I can tell you the following that affected me: 1. NPC's AI is robotic. 2. Story is uncovered as you play, which can be interesting, but it requires time. 3. RPG elements and management, though vast, can overwhelm gamers who skip tutorial. 4. Tutorial and time requirements can be too much for some, including me. 5. Large dense world with plenty to do is good, however, without any real linear direction, many side quests can go unresolved. All leading to requirement to INVEST YOUR LIFE into the game. It's great for some, terrible for others. Yeah, it's subjective most of it, but that's a reason why it really appealed to MANY gamers. But not me.

    • @One-kq2vy
      @One-kq2vy Год назад +3

I think we should be able to make that distinction if we're talking about a product's quality. The game's quality is undeniable. Your experience (which was bad) is a whole different matter. But i guess we can agree to disagree. Now:
      1. I can see that in some cases. I have thoughts on that so lmk if you're interested in hearing them. But imo i think we're nitpicking here. No game's ai is perfect to my knowledge.
      2. The story and world are well constructed. Yes, the narrative is unconventional and that's something that not everyone will wanna adjust to. That's fair.
I'll put 3 and 4 together since it all comes down to the same. So i'll ask you. Are the game's mechanics bad because you don't have the time to learn them? Is the game being so vast a bad thing because you don't have the time to put into exploring? Believe me man, time is also something i wish i could put more into videogames but i don't think those points are fair.
      5. As for the main quest the game provides enough and even more than fromsoft usually does (i think it wouldn't be a "souls" game if it did more than that). As for the side-quests, if you don't wanna put the time, just ignore them. If you don't like non-linearity that's cool, but we're being subjective again dude.
Of course you shouldn't force yourself invest any of your time in something you don't enjoy only because it's popular. More power to you my guy! There's a lot of other awesome games out there and even more coming. Let's enjoy!

I have all the time in the world to play this game, and I even WANT things to blow through a few hours a day. but honestly, I don't have the emotional capacity or energy for this game. it's depressing, it's a little pretentious (that "ye olde" stuff feels kinda played out to me), it's challenging and anxiety inducing and I'm just like "why?" but most importantly, I agree with you about the story. the game says "this that and the other happened, this faceless pleb woke up, time for them to be the Elden Lord" and again, I was just like "why?" I had no connection to it from its first moments whatsoever, which I kind of thought would probably happen given my experience with other FromSoft games. closest I came to getting into one of them was Sekiro, which I understand is one of the best, but damn these games are just not for me.

Here's my two cents and why I like Elden Ring and why I still play it today.
    -Build variety and customization
-Encourages thinking outside of the box to solve problems
    -Encourages planning and improvisation
-Vast exploration (I'm still finding things in the game)
You seem pretty set on stone for the game not being for you and that's fine, games aren't for everybody. Even games that are accessible and less punishing don't appeal to certain people. But I like Elden Ring's combat where you have to learn proper spacing, timing, and resource management. I like how the game doesn't hold your hand and expects you to figure things out on your own, not many games let me fail and learn to improve. I like how my immersion isn't broken by npcs screaming in my ear telling me to hit a boss' weak point or to use a special gadget for something I've done multiple times in the game. I like how every encounter is a puzzle that I need to solve on my own given the resources I have available. The biggest thing I like about Elden Ring is the fact that I don't have to pay microtransactions. I'm not shoved into a cash shop for skins, booster packs, unlockables, etc. I'm not hounded by a weekly battlepass with limited exclusive content that disappears after a month. Although Elden Ring can take time to learn, it doesn't force you to play it. You get to play it, learn, and improve at your own pace. You're not forced to go back into it for fear of losing out on a special event. But I'm already invested in the game and I have been invested in souls likes for a decade. I'm not going to convince you or anyone else, If anything some people will say that I'm just coping or that I'm too deep in the soulslike hole. But objectively speaking, I love these games because every problem they show you, every frustrating mechanic, has a solution. You just have to find it.

Whilst I love the Souls series (Elden Ring included), you have my respect for how you approached your critique/review.
My only gripe is the title of the video, as it's made to be a definitive statement, rather than a personal take/review.
The Souls series are full of lore and story, but it's done a lot more subtle and where players need to seek out the lore (esp. from item descriptions, side quests, environment, etc.) A game like Elden Ring is an example of reward through journey/growth, rather than immediate reward/satisfaction.

Yes, it IS all subjective in terms of what people like and don't like - and Elden Ring is just that - you either love it or don't. I didn't "get" it until I "got" it - and it boils down to the joy of exploring, discovering, and overcoming obstacles that require practice to do so. The lack of direction and the randomness of the things one stumbles upon in the game can either be frustrating, or for me, just wondrous. The thrill of discovering something random and then being lead somewhere unexpectedly is mysterious and cool. Even other "open world" games can't touch the 3 dimensional nature of how the world is laid out in Elden Ring. i loved God of War and the sequel, but after about 150+ hours in this, I feel it doesn't even come close with respect to sheer breadth, complexity, and depth. A long time ago there was a game called Ultima - no cut scenes, no animation, no hype, only discovery and progression. Elden Ring brings that kind of vibe back, a million-fold.

'Geriatric Finger Hug' is one of those games where they molded two massive time-sink genres into a blackhole of attention grabbing nonsense that culminates in a game that feels like it's wasting my time with blatant yet subversive checkbox padding.
But then again, I'm not a streamer or in highschool.
Quality? The intro cutscene is actually just a slideshow of some concept art with the same narration from every other souls game- mystical old lady telling us how messed everything is. Except this time, our task is to work in government. Our companions for the time being are some random horse ~with horns OwO~ and a mystery lady that AGGRESSIVELY simps at us. Eventually we find our hub- but nobody here is worth our time except mom- who actively makes the game harder when she shows us love.
People say that From Soft games have all the hallmark signs of a toxic relationship. 'AARP Membership Program' is the epitome- unapologetically abusive unless you do everything right in the hopes that you may finally wake up and be the unicorn manic pixie dream girl power sub that Elden Ring needs you to be.
I thought I'd do the Elden Ring thing of "walk away and come back" earlier this year, but to the game itself. Lies of P came out between now and then and that game is actually everything 'old people circle' just is not.
Final Score: American Emergency Rooms for the last three years, out of 10.

I am huge fan of the FromSoft games since Dark Souls 1. However, Elden Ring was for me a huge disappointment. It is the first time I didn't bother to do a NG+ run, because I was so disappointed and bored by Elden Ring. The game had for me just an open world for the sake of having an open world. Most of the non-legacy dungeons were repetitive dungeons with repetitive bosses with no real incentive (the equally repetitive chalice dungeons in Bloddborne at least had an epic boss and the blood gems). Taking away the side content, you ride through an empty world to get from one legacy dungeon to another, which feels more like a chore. Yes the world often looks cool, but games like Horizon have much cooler looking worlds.
The previous games did not suffer from this issue as they were a sequence of rather short areas with always a boss at their end and thus had much better pacing. The only time were I had real fun with the PvE was when I was finding easy ways to overcome all rememberance bosses at an RL7 character without upgrading my gear and when I prepared new characters for invasions.

As a huuuge fan of the Dark Souls series, I totally understand where you're coming from. Honestly, I got Elden Ring when it first came out, but I couldn't get into it until just now basically for the same reasons you complained about. I feel like it threw me into this vastly complex new universe, almost parallel to the Dark Souls universe but with everything complicated further, with new lore to learn and tons of new factions and new mechanics and just so much more to learn. My biggest issue was that I just didn't understand the motivation of my character, or the driving force of the conflict, or literally anything else that was happening in the game, it all felt so overwhelming and of course the game does little to explain literally anything to you. I was curious, yes, but I felt like I was missing so much context for the way this world worked that I just became disinterested. You could argue that Dark Souls is similar, but compared to Elden Ring, the concepts that drive Dark Souls are far more simpler and less convoluted, therefore easier to grasp. I've since given it another shot because I'm a sucker for experiencing the beautiful and atmospheric worlds that FromSoftware makes, and I'm having fun with it, although admittedly I'm still pretty unsure as to the "why"s of the game still. There are just so many high concepts the game throws at you. I do gain a bit of purpose from interacting with actual well written NPCs, but those interactions and the vague sense of purpose they give still leave a lot to be desired.

Dark Souls 1 actually explained its story to the player and had NPCs literally telling you what you need to do and why. The more toxic fromsoft crowd may claim "oh that would be handholding, you casual" yet completely ignore that this is exactly what Dark Souls 1 did.
Elden Rings open world simply works as a disadvantage in that regard and it's story telling is vastly inferior to previous titles and its NPC interactions and quests have been outdated for decades. They can absolutely keep a story that needs to be discovered but nobody can tell me that it's necessary to repeatedly klick on a "talk" interaction to exhaust the dialog with an NPC. That's not necessary that's just lazy design and not appropriate anymore for 2023.
And it is indeed an obstacle for new players to get invested. If the story and world and lore was presented better and not hidden in item descriptions in a badly designed UI (which is a HUGELY lazy way to do it, no matter what the fromsoft fanboys say), more people would be able to enjoy Elden RIng. But even then you can argue that having a world that has nothing but stuff to kill in it and nothing else to find... is pushing the limits for some people as well. In Dark Souls the empy world that has nothing but hollows in it was kind of part of the story itself. That's what made sense in that world. But in Elden RIng it feels out of place and isn't explained at all. And to be honest, this style of "dead world, go kill everything and fullfill some ancient prophecy" is also getting old by now. It's not exactly innovative to do the same thing in every game. Sekiro had a story and a completely different feel, and Bloodborne tried a different setting and playstyle. If anything Elden Ring is the LEAST innovative title from FromSoft in recent history.

I am playing Elden Ring (on Gaming Computer, 14 hours) and Pokemon Platinum (on newly acquired 3DS, 10 hours). Pokemon Platinum is much better.

Bought this game recently because of the hype and promptly returned it lol. It’s so punishing. I tried to watch tutorial videos and build my character but it’s just not worth the time to me. I’m not going to dump tons of hours into a game to get one hit killed by enemies still. Games should be fun, this game is work. I do enough of that. Not for me.

You gotta understand souls games are for those with a certain dedication (no social life, don't work, haven't seen the sun in 10 years) ya know

Pathetic, I have a social life, I have a girlfriend and I work as a tradesman in the construction industry. This comment I’m not sure if it’s point is to provoke? But it’s very silly, not seeing the sun when I work in construction?

I came across this video because I keep hearing and seeing people comparing it to Ninja Gaiden which is one of my favorite og Xbox games, which is absolutely baffling to me.
After hearing so many people compare Elden Ring to Gaiden I started replaying the Ninja Gaiden collection aaaand I still don't get it at all. There's just absolutely nothing about Elden Wing that grabs me. Not the gameplay, story, rpg aspects, nothing.
I won't say it's a bad game, because there isn't anything objectively bad about it. There was obviously a ton of love and effort put into it and a lot of other people play it, but I just don't get it.
I'm a beer guy, I love all sorts of craft beers except for IPAs because of how dry and bitter they are. They're well crafted beers and they do have tons of a flavor, but they're REEEEEALLLY hard to enjoy - that's what Elden Ring reminds me of.
