- We share what our Leopard 45 really cost. The base price and the factory options are on the www.leopardcatamarans.com website...but how much did all that lithiums, wind generators, solar panels, radar, and other electronics cost?
Contact Leopard Catamarans' Daniel Snyman at daniel.snyman@leopardcatamarans.com and mention "Sisu" :-)
For the after market sales and installation of the "goodies" contact Marcel van Rooyen at marcel.vanrooyen@leopardcatamarans.com and mention "Sisu Specs" :-)

We purchased a Leopard 45 Catamaran to sail around the world and now we are going through the preparations of getting her kitted out for our needs. We want to visit off the beaten tack places and need to prepare for ice bergs, storms, heavy seas, as well as nice tranquil tropical waters...
Follow us on our journey as we learn from legends when Sailing La Vagabonde upgraded from a monohull to a catamaran...SV Delos wants to upgrade to the latest Amel 51 monohull....Gone with the Wynns chose a Leopard Catamaran....choices choices choices. We looked at other sailing channels such as Wicked Salty, Satori, Jessica and Ryan, Catamaran Impi, MJ Sailing, Happy Together, Sailing Uma, Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose, Zingaro, Miss Lone Star, Sailing Doodles, Drenched, Lucky Fish gets Away, RAN Sailing, Out Chasing Star, Follow the Boat, Rigging Doctor, Sailing Lady Africa, Abandon Comfort, and many others to find our answers and solutions, whilst we prepared our yacht in Cape Town, South Africa.
Don't get me wrong :-) the $469k gives you a very awesome boat! Compared to for example, the Outremer 45ft, you get MUCH more boat and equipment than two dagger boards :-) well, the Outremers are flippen koowl boats, but in perspective, I fattened up the L45 with a sh!t load of "essentials", luxury, and nice to have things and slightly overshot the $725k base price of a 45ft Outremer...
Have you thought about these for your house battery bank? There is no thermal overload issues/no fire problems/3000 to 5000 cycles/and I believe they are a better price point!
battlebornbatteries.com/shop/12v-lifepo4-deep-cycle-battery/
Those batteries look very good! We needed batteries, which can be monitored and controlled by a battery management system. I wish I knew of your suggestion when we had our 4x4 on safaris!
My cat has balsa sandwich in the deck and cabin top and cockpit. None below the rub rail and all the issues we have had involve the balsa sandwich. That excludes Leopard from my list.
@@annsheridan12 have a look at the new face-lift Leopard 45 and L50 and L42. Look if you can find balsa in their hulls 😉
how much are they now ?😢
Thank you for being so honest about it all. Boats have always been a black hole.
Ah man, and it is always a thousand here and a thousand there!
Nice video Frik ! I smiled at being the 'how to man' and yes, observed a lot of channels going that way which is great because it enables folks to learn from each other, but I do think channels should keep the balance and yours is GREAT for folks considering all the options to being kitted out. In the end it's not about subscriber numbers but about the community and interaction of REAL PEOPLE!
You and Petro must be feeling very excited with the imminent delivery - you are in for a blast.
The next step will be all the costs involved in provisioning including spare parts and kits and safety requirements by South Africa before the boat can set sail, so I'm afraid there will still be costs to come.
What I really like about the way you are doing it - is to get it all sorted at home base and prior to leaving - we come across so many 'adventurers' being stuck in boat yards all over the world because they thought they could depart sooner and get things done along the way - a huge mistake for so many and in some instances it has been really sad to see people loose their dreams because they did not realise how much it would cost them to do upgrades on islands.
Sadly, we know of more than one boat where the owners lacked the technical skills and got stuck on outer islands where the locals took them for a ride. So what happened is that their boats got hauled, work was done and exorbitant invoices were produced which was then in dispute with the local guys saying it will have to go to court - in some instances that is a delay of a year or two so there are issues with the boat importation and costs to keep the boat in a marina or boat yard under 'customs bond' and eventually the boat is auctioned or sold. So - great to see you getting everything sorted before you leave home base - there is a lot to be said by doing the work near your home base with access to a motor car, a work ethic you can understand and relate to and of course your own home as base.
All the best you two - we are very excited to see you guys getting to launch date !
All the best
Brent and Ana
Thank you, Brent! You are still our enigma! We in fact, do have at the bottom of the after market sales list, most of the safety gear, but yes, we need to get flares and then food and drinks...my brother and I crossed as crew the Atlantic in 2006....and we wanted to buy beer but soon realized we looked like alcoholics :-D 46 days x 2 beers a day x two persons...uhm. That's why we reverted to a vodka machine, but the food is the same :-) a monthly grocery list for two people is more than a boot full!
When I tell my colleagues here in Malawi "I am leaving next Friday..." it feels good!
Awesome - yes, I remember you telling me about you and your brother crossing the Atlantic and LOL with looking like total alcoholics :D
I think most sailors look that way after a long passage even when on a dry boat, but I love the idea of a vodka machine - I will have to hear from you how that all goes as we may need one too :)
hopefully...if customs are finished "Checking in" the vodka machine...then Petro will make the next episode about the different types of distillers and our choice :-)
First time I actually watched this and it’s an eye opener. I have considered something as life changing as this countless times and that cost video is reality! Easier said than done!
Love your videos Frik & Petro and even have my 11 year daughter glued to them saying ...”come on daddy, let’s do it!”
She even went as far as asking...”would you take me out of school to do this?” Like slow down there my girl! 😂
We live vicariously through you 👏🏻👍🏼😎
Hey Dale!! Put your dream on the back burner, don’t discard it completely 😉. We’ve encountered so many sailing families, and the kids are super amazing, extremely streetwise and loving the lifestyle. Homeschooling is something that they fall into so quickly !
You don't have to go how Sailing Sisu did you can go smaller, used and affordable! Make a plan set some dates and do it I just set my ASA 101 course to start learning to sail and I live in the middle of the US! We plan to vacation anywhere we can charter and in a few years have enough money to quit work and go!
Wow. Frik. Thank you for another great video. We really appreciate your attention to detail and the frank discussion about the costs. My vrou se haar pa het altyd gese" skryf dit op jou maagie en vee dit met jou hempie af" But, we are going to make it work! Our timeline is also to have a catamaran in about 6 to 7 years, so some serious saving coming up. Keep up the great videos. We love them
Thank you Roy, again for your support and kind words! Yes, the idea was not to state the obvious internet listed price, but all the little foxes which chow the vineyards 😉
I'm also 6-7 years away but it seems like the price will be on a rapid upward curve, the base price has gone up $60k from 2017 to 2018. Lets hope its not going to go up by this much year on year!
Yes, that is for sure. Let's hope so. And also we need to get our deposit in earlier rather than later I guess. The saving will need to be even faster than the inflation
Sisu is going to be one amazing boat!Am sure this is going to be your best birthday ever!!
Oh ya! Going to miss you guys, but I am sure we have a ball a month or so later!
Most seems fair and resonable. I love the powerbank setup with the nice amount of solar and batteries.
What really stod out was 20m ip65 led strips for a thousand buck. You got taken to the cleaner there.
Lol!
@@SailingSisu I’m also looking for the aftermarket spreadsheet on this episode to help me analyze a purchase - keep up the good work - thanks!
Amazing and insightful, so fantastic to hear all your advice, information and just general sharing around the realities.... one thing I'm learning about Boats... a lot like horses ... they eat while you sleep lol
Lol, so true! Thanks for the kind words!
I love the Exquisite X5, seems to be a quality boat designed for the blue water, passage making types.
They are beautiful!
Awesome video, your info is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing. Well done and really appreciated! Sk in the UK
No worries!
Amazing boat, best of luck and take good care of it! I would love to buy this boat from you after 7 years!
thank you and thanx for watching! Hope you like our sailing videos as much as our technical videos?
I TOO, want the electric pumpy things.
Great channel. 👍
Great info.
Thingies are the best!
Thanks , good to see the real numbers , excuse me now as I need to go check the jobs section of the newspaper for a second and likey third job . :-) :-)

Lol, been there the last 36 years of my life, held multiple times more than three contracts, worked 18 hours a day, 7 days a week... I think it is time to get that balance everyone was advising me
And a damn fine balance it is .
I've always heard that as one gets older...life sails on
I guess that's a statement you two get to live ....and no doubt , earned it
Thank you, renoguy25!
@@SailingSisu Frik, does that mean you were about 57 when this video was made and around 61 now? Good to hear live begins in late 50's!🎉🎉🎉
Hey great to see you back, I am sure you all had a nice time off and are looking forward to your new boat splashing in September, and then heading out on your Adventure in November/December, just 3-4 months. Can't wait to see videos from the boat and you two finally seeing your dream come true!!!
P.S. Any way that we can get access to your check lists, spreadsheets, software application, or whatever you used to keep track of everything? I am looking to get the Leopard 45 as well, with all the similar options of course, and I don't need to reinvent everything. I am doing a lot of research, so may or may not choose some of the same aftermarket items as you, but having an initial list would be very helpful. My goal is to take delivery in South Africa in 2020 as my Soulmate lives in ZA and I plan to join her there and start our adventures together from South Africa.
Thanks for all the great "How To's" you are doing, some of the BEST stuff out there really. Oh, and perhaps you may want to add BACKLIGHTING to your videos, to soften up the image, maybe a simple lamp behind you pointing up verses the dark background. All the ones you do outside are great of course.
Blessings to you both,
Michael and Marlene
Michael, thank you for the kind words! Yes, inbox our Facebook and I will provide you with the Excel file. You are correct, I have been looking at a few how to make a movie with good lighting :-) pretty involved and I still need to get my head around that!
Great video!! Can just imagine the people at customs must be having a ball of a time with the vodka maker 😂
Well, I could not say that out loud :-D
Hi Frick,
I just saw this video today, and I have only seen two other videos you posted to which I added comments.
I did not realize that you were done with the purchase process.
My mistake, in any case, my comments were sincere.
Your boats looks fast and easy on the eye.
I hope you guys will enjoy it for a looong time.
Add a boat bell. LOL.
No worries, mate! We are grateful for the support! And you did provide tuff but very good questions and advice, which are always welcome for us! That's how we learn :-)
More great info. I calculated that the extras over base price is +58% so list price x 1.6 might be a reasonable estimate for a blue water cruising cat. I wonder how other manufacturers work out.
Thank you! I will say very much the same, but it depends more on the buyers and what options they are taking?
Why not make a google docs list that everyone can see? Would be nice to know what extras you went for, or recommend. Some of those "toys" can be purchased 2nd hand for a quarter of the prices they gave you, or even new with your installation.
Sure we have and we put a lot of work into it. I posted the Excel sheet on our Patreon page alongside other nice goodies.
Thank you!
You're welcome Jesse!
It's cheap if you say it quickly :) you only live once old boy.
Love that! Will for sure use it! Thanx!
Great spec guys. I bet that’s the highest spect 45 on the water.
Lol, not sure about that, but we tried to be prepared
Great info many thanks. From NZ
Thank you for watching Martin!!
Thats a lot of info and data. Think I'll be buying late model previously owned. :-)
Thank you, Richard and that is not a bad idea!
Wow nice upload my dear friend

Happily watched in full view.

Great info thank you !
Our pleasure, Michy!
Same boat is 800k now! For basic charter boat
Shucks! I can believe it! They are amazing boats! Sail very easy and just keep on sailing through very bad seas 😊
🤦🏼♀️Nearly double in 4 years!!!😱
Fantastic, great information. We are wondering if you can give us the cash flow for the boat since you put down the first deposit until the last m\payment due. Even if it’s just percentages, that would be good.
If I understand correctly, then the required deposit to get your name in the queue, is 20%. The balance of the base and factory options, you need to pay before handover. The aftermarket stuff with Marcel, you pay in general the goods to place the order and labor after installation. All my prices included installation. Hope this answers your question?
Sailing Sisu thank you so much. I’m looking at a 45 and this means $145000aud deposit to get into the queue for 2020. Need to start selling some of the kids😀
Sailing Sisu - no question, you are absolutely making the right decision. I have been lucky enough to stare down the dark tunnel twice and get a reprieve (we call it our lottery of life wins) and know what’s really important in life. You are absolutely doing the right thing. Enjoy and have you noticed how much you are smiling in these later videos, you can’t fake that, it’s from the heart.
Perhaps more nervous smiles :-D !! A few weeks ago I was sitting in the marina and watch the tide rush underneath the peer fingers tucking on the boats on their mooring lines....then it hit me....this bloody thing is not on wheels! the slower you go, the more control you loose, so you have to go fast-ish...without breaks!!!! Somewhere in Sept you will hear on the news of hurricane Frik hit Cape Town marina :-D
Sailing Sisu the two engines man, they give you sooo much control. I found over the years you become more gentle with the two throttles and you can just glide in, similar to flying, don’t fight the wind, work with it.
Interesting that the base price you noted as from April 2017, I have just checked today on their website and the base price has gone up by $60k (3 cabin) in one year! I wonder how much the add-ons have gone up as well?
Mmm... Yes, would be interesting. As for after market sales, the prices are actually very current. We ordered the bulk in July 2018
Wayne Smith they've up the price due to supply and demand . They are back logged till 2020.
wow
At December 2017 price has 20$ up from April 2017
Thanks a lot for this video and insightful information you shared. Just a quick (maybe silly one); are you speaking about excluded or included VAT prices? I have a doubt... thanks for your answer, all the best for your sailing adventures ! :)
Patrick, it is a mixed bag. The boat and aftermarket are without, but all items bought by us such as dive equipment, spares, cleaning stuff, include VAT.
Frik is there any possibility to come and see your Cat... I know that you are going to do some fitment when you launch it as well.. Would love to see her as you set it up..
Daniel, we are thinking of planning on some going away party at the waterfront where we could possible do this. But heck, it is very new to us :-D let us try to figure out something...
I cant hear or see any mention about vat ? How would prices change if you export the boat ?
Yes, the prices are all ex vat. We registered in Seychelles 🇸🇨
As a Master sailmaker and canvas works expert I would love to see what you got for covers and dodger work .....I just sailed a FP 44 and the canvas work was JUNK!
Our enclosures were made in Cape Town. We discuss them a bit more in our earlier walk-through video :-) Please watch it and report back as to what you think!
What boat would you choose if you were outfitting with electric motors ?
It would need to offer much more space for solar such as a huge flat roof where people don't want to sit in the sun. It cannot have sails. Must be able to carry a big load of batteries and diesel and genset. It should sail easily and fast meaning, little power will propel the boat at a comfy speed. I guess it should be a 60ft+ power performance cat.
how much is a new leopard 45 now ?
Hey Robert!!! If you want discount please mention our name :-)))
im watching this for the third time. You are just splashing her this week if not already.
Try to look at my options . Wow over whelping...
It is overwhelming for sure! but we absolutely love her! carried us already 13,000nm!
Very nice thanks for the detail but if someone wants to sell The boat after four or five years how much will he get for the same boat If you have time answer this question if not I understand thank you
I have no idea. The Leopard 46 is actually selling after 10 years, for the same price as what the owner originally paid. Some boats loses their value faster than others. I think this specific version of the Leopard 45, owners with no top lounge, will also be a very popular choice as used catamaran. But we will only know that in the future
@@SailingSisu thank you for the prompt reply you are 100 % right I heard that too on another show Catamaran doesn't lose value as much as monohul . You have a beautiful yacht the picture with all the interior lights on looks so pretty.
The question I have is, how much WEIGHT do all those options add to this catamaran. Weight is critical to a cat's performance.
Aha, very good question, Horace! The flip side question is, what weight was the Leopard 45 designed to be a class A vessel... The answer to that is 3,000 tons additional. So, do you think that the listed options are more than 3 ton?
Sailing Sisu 3,000 tonnes additional?
Sorry, just had to double check the manual. Yes, owners can load 3,040 kg additionally, which is excluding the fuel and water (the combined weight would be 4,600 kg load) and still be classified by design, to be a class A vessel.
A boat given design category A is considered to be designed to operate in winds of
Beaufort force 10 or less and the associated wave heights, and to survive in more
severe conditions. Such conditions may be encountered on extended voyages, for
example across oceans, or inshore when unsheltered from the wind and waves for
several hundred nautical miles. Winds are assumed to gust to 28 m/s.
The reason why monohulls seems not to be affected, is that their keel is already very heavy and thus the weight you add are fractional. Cats are super buoyant which the same amount of weight as added to the monohull, would be a much bigger percentage of the total weight especially for performance cats such as Outremer or Gunboat. Not as much for fat and heavy cruising cats :-) The L45 weighs, already 16,400 kg. Add water and fuel 1,560 kg then the owners added weight of 3,040 kg becomes less of a percentage. But add 3,040 kg to a 45ft Outremer and Riley will start crying :-)
But yes, any boat not just catamarans (actually any transport road, air, and water) will be affected with additional weight. That said, very good original question, what would all these extras weigh? Perhaps in a future video I could use the same Excel spreadsheet and add a column for weight...and perhaps one with Amp Hours too :-)
Also Frik, balance of that weight is important. A really simple way to do this check is to add two more columns. On column is headed f/a. And the other is called p/S. What I do is for each extra I put in I put in a value in each column. The value is simply the weight of the item multiplied by its distance from the centreline. Port/starboard is simple as it’s the actual physical centreline of the boat. The forward/aft line is usually the centreline of the centreboard or the the minikeels (in the case off some boats but you will need to check with the guys at Leopard. Don’t try to do it The the millimetre it’s useful as a gross check to see if you are way out of balance. Then if that’s the case you can look at moving things. This worked a great on the last cat. Hope this helps.
Mick
Ah! wow, great advise! thank you!
That's $742,729 before anything breaks, yikes! I'm quite sure that you are going to enjoy the adventures you guy's are about to begin! ,,,,,,/),,,,,,
Jip, at least hopefully under warranty. Watch our episode on new vs old catamaran
I'm curious about a follow-up video eg after 6 months how much else was spent getting it circumnavigation ready eg stuff not included pre splash.
Come sailing up to Moz guys, maybe we can sail around together. I will hang on to my L40 2009 for now ;-)
Thank you, Mike, we are in fact, planning our shake down cruise to Inhambane around November. Would be great to have local knowledge! Why don't you contact us on Facebook, also sailing Sisu?
So it seems that a cheap boat is not cheap at all. Haven’t seen your videos so I’m wondering, why this catamaran? What features about it made you choose this?
Zanh, that is easy... It is a bloody sexy boat! Well, it is also pretty cheap for a 45ft production catamaran. The performance cats like the Outremer from SLV, the base price will be over $1 million... But look at our options, the lithiums and the power system is the bulk of the cost
Nice job
thank you and thanx for watching! Hope you like our sailing videos as much as our technical videos?
Price at 3:55
Thank you for watching!
Did you investigate Exquisite Cat’s, also made in So.Africa?
Very beautiful boat but not our style
Sailing Sisu
I do really like the Leopard, more my style also! Exquisite looks like the most luxurious, but very expensive! I do love bells & whistles also, but costs & maintenance can be overwhelming! 😲 How is the forward looking sonar working out?
@@hughpenn we used the forward sonar a couple of times while looking for a anchor spot at night (it just sometimes happens) or when we are sailing through sand banks
Sailing Sisu
Will probably very useful when visibility is diminished like darkness or murky water.
@@hughpenn well, that is the problem with sonar. Murky water makes it useless. We have three sonar devices and at times in 3,000m + depth of water, all three will show 4m depth. It scared the living daylight, well, it happened at night, but it was not the best of feeling to see that! And it happens quite often at night when the plankton and squids or jelly fish come up to the surface
why is the boat named Sisu? does it mean anything?
Good question! You will find the answer in our "about" section 😉
Anti-fouling not included?
Standard. In fact, it is mentioned :-) as a zero factory cost
I am assuming that's the Anti-Fouling Coating Only and not an Ultrasonic Antifouling System? I have been looking at the ultrasonic systems and they really help with not needing to dive every week to clean the bottom of the boat and they extend the amount of time you need to haul out and reapply the coating.
I have no idea. Keep in mind that it is not a performance cat like SLV
have you guys splashed the boat yet?
She did splash in Cape Town last week while I am in Cape Verde. Still waiting for video and photos from the factory... But a short video is due :-)
Why did you go for RayMarine instead of B&G? Prices?
Well Benny, it came with the boat ☺️ I have not done a research on which nav and instrument brand is the best, but I am not complaining about Raymarine. Yes, Raymarine does have a few quirks and sometimes I wish they could have done something better, but then again, I am a very good software engineer with 36 years of experience in creating good user interfaces and have a bad wack of OCD 😅
@@SailingSisu Thanks your reply, have seen a lot of your OCD :-) Works good for you I have seen that, perfect solution is always better. Good wind and stay safe! Bye from Thailand.
Thank you for the kind words!
When you received your Leopard, did you use a surveyor before signing the final papers ? To find eventual faults, leaks etc.?
No, just a very decent shakedown cruise around Cape Point and back
How did you not get a discount? You can easily get 50k off at a boat show on these
Thank you for watching, Nicholas! Sure we did discount, but like you said, discount at a boat show differs from discount at the dealer, and then we have different discounts between countries and different discounts for Leopard and Moorings, etc. So, I stick to list prices and mention 'Sisu' when you first contact a dealer and see what discount you get 😎
4 years later this boat is selling for more then it did new!
Crazy, isn't it! First time we hear that a boat can be an investment, just hope the price stays up there LOL
11:20 vodka machine? what is that?
Have you Watched our episode on how to make rum from sea water?
Wow!
i concur!
Soooo, basically double the base price to get what you really want in a boat
Uhm, if you go for everything you dreamt of, then 50% from base price... But my calculations may be a bit off
I have done similar calls for our 45 and I think you “must” spend about 20% extra and your wants can take it to 50-70% more depending on how mad you go. We are currently on 47% more.
I know! I mean, the $469k will allow you to sail off in the sunset with a great boat, but...it is nice to have a watermaker :-)
Pretty much ;-) you can consider some DYI to shave off some cost, but you have to consider your level of expertise, the time spent, tools and the money spent keeping your boat on hard. Anything with "marine" in it commands a premium: Stainless Screws 316= $.50 "Marine" grade (316) $1.25
The base price doesn't even includes the anchor...A watermaker option will add $20 to 26K to the price! That's a lot of _Koskenkorva!_
Dont tell me you paid 742k.
I know Leopard, and im sure you do to.
Keep vlogging!
Lol, the Leopard 45 cost $469k...my options cost 50% more 😉
And 10% 70k anual cost!?
Thank you, Valery! We are still trying to figure the annual costs out, and it is a bit difficult for the reason that we are still fixing things under warranty, which kind of obscure the picture...would it have broken outside of warranty or was it a factory deffect? should this then count as cost or not? That said, we do sail a lot and saved a lot on diesel, but, here in the Med, we were forced to motor a lot, which pushed our diesel costs up....it all depends :-)
price without taxes i presume
Ah! Yes, it depends on where the boat is registered... Correct, for South Africa, you need to add 15% VAT
Frisk, have you researched anything about registering in other countries like Turkey etc?
Frik :-) Mick, that is a topic I skimmed over, but only for South Africa, US, BVI, Mauritius, and Seychelles. Not yet for Turkey...have you researched Turkey?
Sailing Sisu yes, two “tax free” havens. Turkey and Montenegro. There are companies set up to do it. It’s a way around VAT for the Europeans.
Montenegro...mmmm...been there (by road) and absolutely loved it! Thank you, will for sure look into those too!
I've noticed this in the majority of your videos..
You wear a *LOT* of *Jeep* related T-shirts! :-)
Lol, and I had three Land Rovers 😁

Just finished watching the review video Nick/Teresya *(Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose)* did on the same boat...which you can find here:

and I'd be interested in hearing YOUR THOUGHTS on the forward facing cockpit and how you feel about it, especially seeing as the two of you will be taking your boat on more grander ocean crossings.
Thanks!
Is the Leopard 45 Forward Cockpit a Jacuzzi waiting to Happen? Great topic for a video ☺️
What is a $597 Vodka machine exactly?
😅 stillspirits.com/collections/stills/products/turbo-500-still
750k? how much for a 50 with these options
Simon Hantler about another $300,000 Aud.
yes, the options would stay the same...or you can fir more lithiums and solar, wich will dramatically up the options, but yes, the L50 base is around $685,000 USD. But the L50 options have stuff like carpets, utility room, flybridge, etc....very tempting options!
@@SailingSisu yes but with 2 people a S version instead of Flybridge is much better as can be at helm and still talk to living area etc.....in a Flybridge need radio/intercom to call out below.
Thats a lot of biltong, ha ha
