Contract painter for 36 years here. Turn your pressure way down when spraying thin stains, you lose a lot in overspray. That color really is nice, turned out great.
Years ago I brushed my 36 x 48 barn, it took 60 hours. More recently I have sprayed it twice at about 4 hours each time. That included time for fixing the sprayer when it gave trouble!
Mike, Mike. After watching you for about 4 months now and all of your videos I have learned one thing that I am sure of. You are very matriculate about everything you do. From cutting fire wood at 16 inches to stacking it properly, milling lumber from the mill and dry stacking it to mini cabin overdoing. And now the sprayer back in the box. You are very tidy and neat. But I can’t recall the last time I have seen that side by side clean. I think it’s time to clean her up. Lol. I only mention this cause I just purchased a side by side and I’m noticing everything. Great job Morgan’s.
I have the same sprayer from Graco. I've had mine for 3 years and I haven't had a problem with it. The best $350 I've ever spent on painting/staining equipment ever.
I like the sprayer it looks like it really speeds things up. It's good that the wood is soaking it up and the stain is penetrating the pine. You might want to consider a heavier duty protection for your breathing. I just purchased a face mask with disposable filter cartridges that can be customized to the job you are doing.
Good morning Morgan's. Staining looks terrific, I agree with using extension wand on the gun, it really helps. That stain will really make the new pool house look great! 😉👍
That Airless Sprayer is a fantastic addition to your tool, versatile also. The shed coming along very nice. Had used one a long time ago doing some thick heavy paint. Handled it with no problem once thinned down to correct viscosity. Y'all have a safe day and fun with Archie.
That respirator that you are wearing is a dust respirator. You need to wear a vapor respirator when you are spaying a oil base stain/paint. Of course you are outside so the over spay won’t be as bad.,but if you were in a enclosed room you would definitely want to wear a vapor respirator. All I have ever used is a Crayco airless spayer. I used to paint houses for a living. Interior and exterior. Water base and oil base.
Its looking good Mike, as I said its a little learning curve. The only thing you need is a 5 gallon bucket to pull from, to get a more consistent color. Plus a damp towel to cover the bucket to keep any trash, debris or dirt in your paint or stain. Catch you on the next one!
Mike, if you're going to use this kind of stain for future builds, think about getting a 5 gallon bucket, should be cheaper in the long run. Great job, doing well.
Really good video fella. Thank you for sharing your day. Simply Safe. Sounds like a good idea. Not here. Haven’t locked my door for 30 years. Keys are in truck, quad, tractor.
Had my X5 for about 5-years and love it for internal woodwork, trim, molding painting.....no brush strokes......of course you need to tape of and seal room you are doing, but it does a great job.
On rough work use a wallpaper brush for faster coverage with the wipe down process. Get a better respirator. If you can smell it you're breathing it. We love our SimpliSafe system.
I used Ready Seal to re-stain a log cabin house. It is much cheaper to purchase in 5gal pails than to use it in a gallon can. Where I got it at I believe it was around $40/gal and it was $125 for a 5gal pail. The sprayer seems to work nice. Good job Morgan's!
Mike I think that the more you use the sprayer the better you will get and the less waste you will have or at least you will have a better idea of how much you will need and the shed is looking great
Love your channels. Used a sprayer for my privacy fence once, gave my green truck a nice red hue from the over spray blowing in the wind. Nice mess to clean up and a lessen learned.
Thanks Mike . I was waiting for this video . Love the colour of the stain . It's hard to pick which stain to get but it's an easy choice when you see what colour someone else has used . Gonna save this video in my favourites just for the colour . Bright sunny morning in Southern Ontario . 61F . Take care .
Mike.....love your channel Small tip....when spraying rafters....throw a thin sheet of 4x8 plywood on top....move easily with where spaying.....consierable less overspry
Charles Marshall overspray is overspray, it just becomes stain on the plywood with your method and at some point it will start dripping on you . I don’t see the overspray being a problem in this situation. The entire structure is the same finish. May be helpful if you’re trying to keep it off other surfaces but a major time sucker to keep moving it to keep up with your work flow. It would be easier to use a roll of plastic.
Mike and Melissa, Great videos, I love watching every one. One suggestion from today's video - if you have access to a quick, easy set-up reflector screen, it would help a lot to take the dark shadows off your faces so we can see your eyes under the ball cap, particularly on the bright sunny days and when you are facing into the sun. Thanks again for all you do and for sharing it all with us.
Mike, next time you spray start with the pressure at a very low setting and work your way up until the spray tails (the little dots on the edge of the spray fan) are gone. You’re losing a ton of material to over spray. 2 gallons should be more than enough to finish the whole building. That’s a great color. I hope my recommendation helps and I’m speaking from 16 years experience.
If I have a project that typically takes 10 gallons to complete using a roller Ballpark guesstimate how many gallons do you think it would take using this sprayer?
Fantastic job Mike and Melissa, sure does a great job with your sprayer, once you get the hang of it there will be less loss of stain. That’s a pretty cool tool for your arsenal 👍👍. You’ll be filling up the wood shed real quick. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.
Mike & Melissa - Another great video. I had an opportunity to use an airless sprayer when helping a guy do some painting. If there's no wind, and you do the masking right on a house project (not something you needed here) it's a great way to go. Very quick, and good even coverage without as much wear and tear on the body. Blessings to the Morgans. Hi there Hunter.
Love the channel Mike. I was reading through the comments and don't know how you maintain you sanity in dealing with all the safety patrol comments. I get that people are concerned about safety but if we took every safety precaution recommended and those provided by the manufacture, we would never get anything done! I have the same Graco and it sure is a time saver. Oh and one more thing... Don't for get to chock you tires when you get off your equipment. Western PA is hilly and you don't want you stuff rolling away and running over your family or dogs after they've been drinking your used mineral spirits. LOL Keep up the great work.
Hey Mike I have the Graco Magnum X7 for years now. The one thing I can tel you is to clean it well when your done. Get a couple of 5 gal buckets. Pump a lot of water through it, take the spray head off and move the sprayer to the water and pump the stain back to the can stopping just as it turns deluted. This will clean the hose and save some paint. Take the spray head completely apart don’t just run some water through it. You will find paint hiding everywhere in there. I leave it all apart to dry then spray it some wd40 before putting it all back together. Also there is a check ball at the top of the pick up if that gets stuck it will never prime.
I figured you'd like that sprayer. I love mine. I've only used it once or twice, but it is so efficient, well worth the little bit of waste you get. Shed looks awesome!
I have that exact same generator and it’s great. Mine starts on the first pull every time. I got a Graco sprayer last year to stain our deck and it worked great. I will use it to paint the house next. She’d looks fantastic for sure!
Mike, now that I think about it, you may want to put on 2 coats. First coat sucks into the wood, second coat actually protects from the UV, moisture, and all round weather concerns. With sprayer now, that might be good to consider. What do other professional painters think? Do a section on the back and see what you think.
Although pricey, I use a Honda 2200 inverter gen set for my airless. It works perfect. Very a uiet, super easy to handle and it will run hours upon hours on very little fuel. I also take it to the woods for when I need it there. It would work perfect at your mini cabin. Thanks for the videos. Best to you and your family!
Good morning Morgan's. Awesome puppy reveal last night. I got to get me a paint sprayer. Have many projects, would be real handy. Thanks for the video and have a day.
Melissa's next Memorial Day or 4th of July gift, a PTO powered generator for the tractor. More powerful (can power most of your house in an outage) and no need to worry about running it to keep the carb clean (more efficient running the diesel tractor), plus doesn't take valuable space in the bucket. Melissa will love you for it, Haha!
Love that stain color. I spent a lot of years spraying in my body shop. Relatable information. Get a 3M carbon based filter mask with rubberized housing for a good fit. They are in the 20 some to 30 dollar range. Even better yet is the full face mask covering your eyes as well. I need a paragraph to explain all of that. When spraying it is best to edge out the work surfaces first. When you go all around the edges it frames the job, and then you can focus on doing the flat surfaces evenly. Done effectively enough it would all but eliminate the brushing, at least for the most part. I had mentioned that on the header/face panel (You are a perfectionist like I am) you would need to brush a certain area away from where you stopped with the brushing because the sprayer is not going to give you the option of going up to that line finely. It would create a second coat situation which would result in a much darker overlap spot. From the video yes it is a much darker patch. Whether it dries closer to the rest or not is to be seen. One way to correct it is to roller or brush a second coat across the entire header and stop finely along that edge so then everything on the header would have only one second coat. (Where it is overlapped you do not coat that again.) That header is your header. It is the marquee spot on the shed so spending such a little bit of time to make it even makes sense. So yes edging out first, and then combining the ideal head for spray pattern, and being able to focus on overlapping the coats will give you the technique that you yearn for. Perfecting the spray head size will enable you to cover a good sized area without too wide of a spray pattern which wastes a lot of material into the air. Have to play with it to find the sweet spot. When edging out I noticed others advising you to get an extension, ideally you don't want an extension for edging out when the area is easily reachable, but extensions of course are great for big flat areas that are harder to reach.
Time with the tool Mike ... that’s all you need ... time with the tool ... I’ve been working with tools all my life and for me, the instructions, tutorials, and in some instances in person education is all great but nothing has taught me more about using a tool than actually using it over and over ... btw, I think that sprayer nozzle will rotate so you’re always holding the handle vertical ... maybe not ... I have a Graco myself but haven’t used it in a long time ... lastly ... being able to load and haul heavy equipment with a tractor must be a plus ... thanks for sharing your experiences with others
💥 That she’s looks great with a fresh coat of stain on it. I have the Wagner Flexio and I can paint our entire fence in about an hour. It’s a major time savor. I can paint as fast as I can move my arm up and down. Sure beats a brush! *Keep on tractoring!*
Hello Morgan family! You might try backing down the pressure a little. Lighter viscosity finishes need less pressure to move. Keep up the good work. Hi Hunter and Archie!
That’s a really great color, looks good. Picked up a good used 4000lb hydraulic winch today, going to build a low rent version of your Wallenstein. Thumbs up
Just a couple of tips. I had a Graco airless for a few years (until my garage was broken into and sprayer, two compressor, pressure washer, etc. were stolen so good thinking on your part to get a security system). It was the wood soaking up the stain and not the fault of the sprayer that it was taking so much product to cover the work. Spraying, especially with a good quality sprayer, generally takes less stain, paint, or other chemical as opposed to brush or roller applications. Ensure that the the motion which you are using to apply the stain is correct for the orientation of the tip (vertical or horizontal fan pattern). Use a horizontal motion (side to side) with a vertical fan spray and a vertical (up and down) motion with a horizontal fan spray. Also, whichever motion you are using, try to keep the tip at a 90 degree angle to the work piece. Stop spraying at the end of each pass (side to side or up and down) and only restart (squeeze the trigger) once you have begun to move in the opposite direction. This prevents apply too much product to the ends of each pass, resulting in an uneven application and wasted product. If you decide to use the sprayer to apply latex paint (interior or exterior) use a product from Flood called FLOTROL. As the website states " FLOETROL® is a latex paint additive to improve flow and levelling of water-based paints." In a nutshell, latex paint without a thinner is too thick (viscous) for the sprayer to compress and push through the system. It will usually just sit there chugging with little to nothing coming through the spray tip. With FLOTROL, it sprays and fans out just as it should. I usually mix the FLOTROL at the max recommended ratio to paint. Use a large drill and a paint or grout mixing attachment to ensure that the it is well mixed. If you let a batch sit overnight, hit it with the mixing attachment before resuming the following day. Lastly, if you are doing a large job (painting a house over the period of multiple days) you can wrap the spray gun in a plastic bag (ensure it is intact with no holes or broken seams) and secure it tightly in order to leave the rig overnight without disassembly and cleaning. Also wrap the pickup tube in a plastic bag and secure it. When you are ready to work the next day, simply remove the bags resume the process. The pickup end may need a rinse in some water, as it is more prone to forming a skin on the paint on it, but the gun end should be fine. There could be a small bit of dried paint in the opening of the nozzle. If so, remove the nozzle and rinse it in water (warm, if you have it) or hit it with a garden hose/dip it in a bucket of water. Once you are finished with the project, rigorously clean everything, by the book. Graco is a quality product and should serve you well for years. Thanks for the videos. --- Ted
Glad to see the graco working well, I've often considered getting a sprayer over the years but never did. Now that my helpers are adults they aren't always around to help, so a graco may be in my future.
I've had my Simplisafe system for about 6 months ... works like a charm, easy wireless install, and love the remote camera viewing on the smart phone ... been a builder for decades, installed many systems, but never had one myself ... the inexpensive monitoring price convinced me (and uncertain times) plus I got an extra lawn sign to warn the low life's, I also have a large male Bouvier des Flandres (cattle dog of flanders) as a back up .... Mike, I never knew this, but my small engine guy told me I should start my generator every 3 months, one to check engine, second to put a "load" on the electric to cycle it .... he said he see's many that start and run, but won't generate electric, that has to be depressing in a power outage ... not sure what process goes wrong, but I now do this ... I just plug in a shop light for 10 minutes ... those Graco X5's are great machines as long as you clean them well they'll last forever .... and yea, untreated pine absorbs a lot of stain, I usually double my stain estimate when working with it ... I got a great chuckle in the last video of Hunter "speed hello" flash ... and love watching the whole family join in some of the videos ... just joined Melissa's page and watched Hannah learning to drive the Jeep ... she did really well for the first time
You can cut down on waste by buying different jets. 2 in. 3,4,6,8. spray widths. Also couple different length extensions. Also a swivel just behind the spray tip, you can adjust different angles so you're not contorting your arm. Also the paper mask is not enough. A partial respirator for solvents. I ran 2 units for 25 years. Good luck
Nice to see the shed with color. Also interesting that although not everything you have is the same asI have, but I have been using Stihl products for over 20 years, I bought an Ezmark mower at the end of last season and now you got one, I am looking to buy a Kubota BX23S as soon as I can and now you guys have one, and then the surprise, you pull out a Champion generator. Although it's newer then mine, I have the same model I bought about ten or eleven years ago for camping but it ended up being used for power outages around my house. Looking forward to seeing how that Grayco sprayer works for you over future projects. Till then Have A Day.
To reduce your overspray and waste focus on spray tip sizes which are easy to change as you spray. The 510 tip will put a 10 inch can for the walls then switch to a lower sized on for the 2x4s. Nice job for a newby. Way to go Mike.
Looks awesome! I’ve only done one house interior with three bedrooms using a paint sprayer so I’m not exactly an expert but I watched a bunch of videos of professionals doing it and what I noticed was they all had an extension about a three or 4 foot rod or tube that clipped under the gun and had the nozzle at the end of it. I found a 3 foot extension for my little Wagner end it made a huge difference, you can reach everything much better, You’re farther away so you’re not getting it all over you, and the end was curved so it was a lot easier to get underneath things and into nooks and crannies with that angle on the tip. I did about half the house before I bought the extension end it was just a huge difference in the labor side of it and the mess as well, but especially when you’re doing the higher up stuff, you can go a good 10 or 12 feet without needing a ladder, and no bending over. I would check and see if that manufacturer makes one, even a little 3 foot extension makes an enormous difference. Also if you have an old trailer that spends a lot of time sitting out in the sun, when you’re building tables and stuff like that and staining or painting them if you do it on top of the trailer that overspray is like free protection, it will just be an ugly trailer. I noticed because I had two trailers with the same wood and after about five years one of them completely rotted out and the other one was still in great shape it just had stain and paint all over it. Lol
I have lots of "pro-tips" on using the Graco, which I'd have generously provided if you'd only had the puppy running around underfoot for my amusement. Love the Morgan clan!
I painted a pickup box with a Wagner Power Painter once and got sick after. I think the paint was absorbed through my skin. Your sprayer does a much better job. I like the color too.
I have the x7 and x9 they are all good! Great brand. I what the handheld Graco Ultra Cordless that runs off the dewalt 20 volt battery but that price tag is keeping me away. You definitely use more paint and stain no matter what you are doing with sprayer like that. Looks great! You'll like your new spray tan too..
Hey after you clean that airless you could run a bit of kerosene thru it . keeps things lubed a bit . especially if you dont use it very often . always use the ( throat ) oil also on the shaft seals . keeps them happy also . your puppy is absolutely gorgeous .
i have been watching you for quit some time .I am a painter , I would stain boards before you put them up you can spray them on a drop cloth or tyvac then back roll them you will save a lot of stain and time .you can spot stain once its up .this way you can get the bottom of the boards that are on the ground that is where they will wick first
Mike, After a few days to let everything evaporate cover the box of the sprayer with a trash bag. Sprayers do not like dust of any sort. If you leave it like that on the shelf with months of dust, you will be frustrated with future projects. Just a thought. Have a day.
A couple of questions from a novice. Can you comment on the cleanup process. How do you clear the stain out of the feed and sprayer head? What was the bucket of mineral spirits for? Are you using it to dilute the stain to improve flow? Finally, how is the application of stain different from paint? The simple answer may be links to Graco videos that address these questions. I have never used a sprayer which is the reason that I am asking for basic information. Thanks for your video !!

OMG , love the braids !
Thumbs up
Nice
Looks nice, like the color.
As the website states "
FLOETROL® is a latex paint additive to improve flow and levelling of water-based paints." In a nutshell, latex paint without a thinner is too thick (viscous) for the sprayer to compress and push through the system.
The stain looks great on the woodshed. Nice work!
Wood shed Looks good Mike, that sprayer is a time saver, I have x7 I love it, they are worth the money.
I got a great chuckle in the last video of Hunter "speed hello" flash ... and love watching the whole family join in some of the videos ... just joined Melissa's page and watched Hannah learning to drive the Jeep ... she did really well for the first time
Looks great mike looking forward to your next projects, have a day!
Good luck
Looking good sprayer worked great looks like
Nice to see the shed with color.
Way to go Mike.
....10 inch fan ....not can. Hate that autocorrect.
Sound of a morning dove in the back ground during sprayer set up is cool....
Spray tan is right!!!
You know it's a good thing to wher a long sleeve shirt. It's pressure is so high that it can cut your skin. Looks great. Clean up is very important.
Good morning all . That was quick.
😊👍💝💥🌎🌹🌹🍻
I like it. It looks like that sprayer will actually get product between those siding boards.
Once again, good info from the Morgans.
Hey after you clean that airless you could run a bit of kerosene thru it . keeps things lubed a bit . especially if you dont use it very often . always use the ( throat ) oil also on the shaft seals . keeps them happy also . your puppy is absolutely gorgeous .
Looks like a fine piece of equipment and helps get the job done in half the time. Love your channel and keep up the good work!
Morning Mike
i have been watching you for quit some time .I am a painter , I would stain boards before you put them up you can spray them on a drop cloth or tyvac then back roll them you will save a lot of stain and time .you can spot stain once its up .this way you can get the bottom of the boards that are on the ground that is where they will wick first
Must be the spring of the year -- hear the dove
Mike, After a few days to let everything evaporate cover the box of the sprayer with a trash bag. Sprayers do not like dust of any sort. If you leave it like that on the shelf with months of dust, you will be frustrated with future projects. Just a thought. Have a day.
Shed looks good. Excellent choice on the light oak color. Stay well, say hey to the family and yall HAVE A DAY 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️
great vid the shed looks great
Looks Great
shed looks great!!! Glad you got the dogs away before you sprayed!
Stain color is just about right for a cover over Melissa's upcoming pool!
Looks great. We are in the market and have been a little while for a sprayer. And have been eye balling these for a while. Sounds like a good product.
Mike the shed looks fantastic. Please, please get a charcoal respirator. Thanks for another nice video.
MSFA - Go Graco! The woodshed looks great
good job with the sprayer I knew an Airless was the way to go
