Shout out to the legendary King Curtis on the sax! My 2nd cousin from Charleston, South Carolina, literally gave this album me as a gift when I was 12 to bring back home to New York in 1972! I absolutely love this album and Aretha Franklin, Billy Preston, and Ray Charles! OMG, history on that stage! I still listen to this album, and so do my children! RIP to all these legendary artists! 🙏
Thanks so much for posting this reprise to ‘Spirit in the Dark’ as well as the initial song. What infectious funky soul with Aretha, Ray, Billy, King Curtis. Love the bit where Aretha ask Ray to parlay and still keeps grooving herself on the electric piano and then joins Billy Preston on the Hammond Organ.
this is the best of the great musicians jammin' in the dark I also see Billy Preston on organ, Aretha Sister singing background...and the horns from Ray Charles band...it such great soul from the church in the song..
Great performance! From what I heard, Ray Charles was not feeling up yo par that night and was not happy with his performance. He didn’t want this released.
Hassan Z Abdullah the sweet inspiration was Elvis background singers and Aretha sisters and her cousin Barbara was her background singers,of course Cissy would sing background at intervals, but not a regular gig!!!!
@@jaygaston1719 Oh ABSOLUTELY! I am 55 years old and this album came out when I was 4 years old when my family lived in NYC. I CLEARLY remember that THIS song was ALWAYS a favorite at my parents house parties as it was one of mine! Everyone attending would always participate/ interact with the song as if they were actually at the actual concert. When Ray would say "Can ya fell it?", they would scream "YEAH!" and when he said "Somebody help me!" they would all start soul clapping! This song has been a MAJOR part of my life for SO LONG and it has always brought joy to my soul whenever I heard it. I didn't know that there was actual footage of this performance until 1992 and I have on the SERIOUS HUNT for it ever since! Thanks to your kindness you have allowed me to at the very least view it, thanks again!
@@seansherrod8725 i love listening to Re bring Ray along. Cmon Ray, cmon Ray. Then she starts talking to the band....do u want us to stay right there? Stay right there!!! Then it gets good to Ray and Re says Watch Out Watch out!!! I crack up every time I listen to that part. Then in part 2 when Ray is on the piano and Re and Billy Preston are absolutely killing it on the Hammond organ! Just incredible

Every church around the world should be ripping worship music like this rather than the canned crap they force us to play.
Black churches play this music. This IS gospel music!

No mention of Ray Charles, yet without him there wouldn't be much happening . Great film though.
