Welcome to LivingPianos.com, I'm Robert Estrin. The subject today is about how to play with a metronome. It can be a really daunting task, particularly if you're not accustomed to playing with a metronome. The tips I'm going to give you today are not just for those of you who are new to the metronome, but also for those of you who practice with a metronome incessantly and wonder how to stay with the metronome.

Great advice. Learning how to play without a metronome will limit your speed and make a lot of your playing sound inconsistent. Using a metronome also is a great way to delete/prevent mistakes.

Absolutely agree! Unfortunately it’s quite challenging though and many beginners just hate it 😂

The problem I have with the metronome is in pieces that mix together 8ths, triplets and 16ths... basically I am totally missing the beats of the metronome, and instead i am working better (=more confident, not necessarily more on beat) if i am counting. Such an example was Kuhlau's sonatina in Cmajor the 1st part. Another is the dotted notes (1+0.5).

What do 'slurs' and and 'ties' and 'beamed' notes really mean and how do they affect the Time signature?? What do these markings actually do anyway??

You could also count the number of beats you tap in 15 seconds, and then multiply it by 4.

This has never been explained to me.
I have an internal rhythm and listen to the song in my head and just play along with my internal metrinonic head rhythm.
    🧐hmmmmm😳👀

I'm curious to know if it is a bad practice to e.g., play at 160 with one click per eighth note in 4/4 instead of 80 at one click per quarter note if the timing is tricky, to have more clicks to rely upon. Or should the metronome always be set at one click per beat?

It’s preferable to set your metronome to match the meter of the piece you are playing, even if your tempo is slower. If the piece is in 2/4 for example, and you have the metronome beating four times to the bar, you might get into the habit of playing it with a 4/4 feeling. As long as you can keep your sense of the pulse of the music, you should be OK doubling the metronome.

Lovely, basically Robert you are saying that to set it up it takes some degree of having internal rhythm.😂I know many who can’t even tap with foot. Lol
