  • Part 2- Armature
I’ve been using Chavant clay for years. Decades actually. It’s my favourite modelling clay by a long way now.
Chavant have a newer product on the market called Alien Clay a company called Form X in Amsterdam asked me my opinion on it.
These videos are the result of working up a full creature design and I recorded the whole process.
The second video is all about the armature and how I build a very strong base to work onto.
Next comes the bulking out with tinfoil and wire.
And the final videos are all about the Clay and how I use it. It’s a great product as it’s hard at room temperature but you can heat it up until its liquid if needed.

Absolutely fascinating. I always read about the need to make an armature prior to this kind of sculpture. This is the first time I ever saw that part of the process.

Second video in the series here and its all about the armature or the wire base that we can then sculpt onto.

Thanks for the great videos - since you just posted a traditional sketch I think its fair to ask you my recent workflow question. I do some traditional sculpting and I'm looking for a way to digitize my work in clay and print in 3d for short runs. as an alternative to molding and casting small to medium (100mm - 300mm) pieces. it doesnt look like the technology is quite there yet. There seems to be a lot of work involved to get a good scan (from a sub $1000 table-top scanner) and clean it up, support it, slice it etc. Which actually let me down the path of just sculpting them digitally to begin with, which led be to your Nomad videos. While I do plan to get fluent in Nomad, its just not the same as working with clay. I've been a digital designer for 30 years so enjoy doing some hands on, analog work. Do you have a preferred workflow for digitizing and printing?
