There are actually sayings in Japan like "college is the spring break of life" and "You can only play while you're still in university." It's seen as relief between stressing out about entrance exams as a high schools and the soul crushing work of being an adult. I think high school for Persona specifically is chosen for, while also for the universal experience as you said, is the liminal point for a lot of Japanese people. Especially considering the new games take place in second year, the middle of your high school years and where you sort of start to get an idea on where you're about to aim or end up once you reach adulthood in a year or so. Here the whole idea is to quite literally improve and level up your skills so you're prepared for the next phase of life (if I'm remembering, you only kind of get one shot for a career as soon as you finish high school) , which is an ideal environment for a story based within the Fool's Journey. College, as others have said, is kind of a break from that, is more casual and less stressful by comparison since the big decisions have already been made. Can have many interesting stories within that time period, but admittedly the high school setting, the way it is anyways, is better suited for the stories Persona tells nowadays.

Ryuji is introduced as "vulgar boy", he dyes his hair blonde and has very little respect for his elders. Kanji also Bleeches his hair, like rebellious youths often do in japan.

I've heard college in Japan is actually pretty breezy. The last year of high school is known as "exam hell", but once you get a high enough score to get into a top college or university, you're basically set for life. The top companies recruit out of those, simply BEING at one is enough to be on their radar. (This explains why Makoto was willing to go so far for a college recommendation)
Protagonists winning Japanese polls is not exclusive to Persona, the Fire Emblem protags tend to score really high in their polls too, as does Rean in Trails of Cold Steel. Blank slate self-inserts seem to do really well over there.
The P3 polls are interesting, as there was a lot more variance between then than P4.
I'm also one who likes Q1 more than Q2. Q2 does do some thing better, but I think it did some worse than 1.

Yukiko struggles with her role in her family business, so maybe Japanese see that as more relatable? American girls might like that Chie is affirmed as a tomboy. I dunno, I love both of them, and their friendship is solid. ❤

yukiki is your average very feminine girl next door which definitely fits the traditional gender roles and collectivist culture of Japan, whereas Chie is more untraditional in her femininity and is really individualistic in her presentation and hobby (wont see a lot of japanese girls looking like Chie with a deep interest with kung fu in japan ) which fits more with our progressive and individualistic societies in the West. Which aligns with my own preference since I found Chie to be way funnier and memorable than Yukiko because of her personnality and humor.

The main problem with Haru is you get her so late in the game that it is difficult forming an attachment to her. Heck, you can't even start her confidant until pretty much the last month of the game.
As for voting the protagonist first in everything, I wouldn't even have them on the list as an option myself. They tend to just be player surrogates and not characters unto themselves... weird that Asia rates them so highly. To me voting the protag first is like voting the music slider in the config menu your favorite game feature.

I find it funny HS culture is so idealized in Japan, even though when you hear from Japanese people about their HS experience it's often just as strict & brutal as work culture.
Strict demand for studying, placement exams & grades to get into a top college & get a high paying job, a bunch of traditional & conservative rules restricting nearly everything you do (including dating), a ton of pressure to join clubs & study groups (if not just required), otherwise you aren't seen as driven enough & won't get into good schools, etc etc etc

The reason why Persona 3-FES was less the starting point for players in Japan than Persona 3 is easily explained.
While in the west Persona 3-FES was released as a full game on a single disc, in Japan they released FES as an Add-On Disc (today it would be DLC) to Persona 3. That means, to play P3-FES in Japan, you needed to have a copy of P3, or else you couldn't play it.
I bought the FES disc in Japan while I was there on holiday, and the shopkeeper warned me that I would not be able to play it without the original game, that's the reason I know this. XD

can confirm, im in my early 30's and my first Atlus game ever was Persona 4 Golden when it first released on steam. I am also surprised by the age demographics here but if i can speak from personal experience i think the reason is because older people my age tend to be tired of hyper competitive multiplayer games or even single player games that significantly raise one's stress level and blood pressure. Like bro I have too much responsibility and stuff to worry about than to spend playing 100 hours game time just to 'git gud' enough at Dead Cells so that I can experience the real end game final boss. Not to mention getting unironically mad af and swearing at my monitor is cringe and pathetic as a grown ass man. These days I play simple game that are simple, story driven, and relaxing. I AM TRYING TO HAVE FUN, not be tensed up and anxiety ridden over my K/D ratio. Its really comes down to each individual personality, but thats my theory why people in their 30's are the 2nd largest demographic.

Seeing the general demographics, that still makes me think we could use a game similar to Eternal Punishment in terms of cast age. I believe that a game with a central cast of people ages 18-25 who are just coming into the workforce/continuing on to college. Something with the message along the lines of “Yeah, growing older is hard, but the friends we make in adulthood (and the ones we maintain from our schooling years) make adulthood a bit easier.” Something optimistic for the future, but I probably am in a minority in this one. Also not surprised Shinjiro kinda sits low on popularity polls, character who shows up for short amount of time and 90% of his character development is in Kotone’s route. Also dies about as quickly as he’s introduced. (He’s still #1 in my heart dammit). That Q2 poll was a big W for Shinjiro (also 669? Nice.)

A quick note about persona in regards to Sony systems.
Persona 5, atleast in the states, was considered an M rated game. This is an important detail because gamers who were not using adult based accounts on playstation systems, COULD NOT get persona 5 to play. The system, here in the us atleast, AGE BLOCKS people with kid accounts, even if they became adults, from playing the game at all. My sister was given permission by her familly to play the game and The playstation did not care. There was also no parental control that unlocked the feature either.
Then when she tried a few years later, now an adult... it still blocked her.
Mom had to jump through dozens of hoops to get my Sis's account changed from kid to adult, and boy that was a nightmare.
I dont know if the same thing happened in other countries, but I feel like its an important detail concerning the Ages of the players within the surveys.

She also doesn't really fit the theme of the game that well, where everyone lost someone. If I'm not mistaken, she is the only party member who didn't have to experience the death of a loved one.
Rise and Futaba, despite also being analyzers, are much more prevalent in the story. Risu is the main love interest, and Futaba is the daughter of your guardian. Fuuka has nothing. She's just the voice that you hear in tartarus.

Keep in mind with the poll around the 4:30 mark that it’s specifically referring to the FIRST Persona game people played. I’d imagine people who started the series with 3 or 4, and definitely 5 would probably be more likely to play the PSP version of Persona AFTER their first game.
Knowing what they started with is interesting, but I would be interesting in seeing which version everyone played. Those who started with Persona 1 in the first decision are mostly probably those lifelong fans.

Adding FMC is not easy it's just that if you're adding FMC, you have to take gender context into account. Rewrite a lot of dialogues, add female clubs, addresses, etc.
but I think it's worth it. Social games such as persona are very popular with girls.

Makoto ranks first because his story is just honestly thousands of times better than anyone elses. Maybe tied with Aigis's. He sacrificed himself for the sake of everyone else, literally. I mean come on now.

About the age thing, a lot of us who started the series as teenagers are in our 20s now. Hell, I started when I was a teenager with Persona 5 in 2019 and I am already in my 20s now lol. I bring this up to say that it might not be about the Japanes audience hating adult life as much as it is simply that the original teenage fans are aged now.

P3FES in Japan was not a full game like it was in the west, it was an expansion disc in Japan so starting with FES would be awkward

jumpei and fuuka are my favorite and second favorite characters in p3 so it's sad too see them lose but while i get why jumpei isn't popular in japan i wonder why fuuka isn't? she similar too futaba who's really popular in japan . this is not me being salty i'm just curious fi there is a reason for her ranking low.

@@szczepan4737 i should rewatch the video but if i remember correctly the more bubbly characters like yosuke, ann and futaba do score pretty high idk if i would use the word moe for them though but i might just have the wrong idea of what moe is even though I'm a massive anime fan i don't have much experience with moe culture . i think your right though it probably also doesn't help that those two don't appear much in spin offs it's most of the time mitsuru, eagis, akihiko or elizabeth.

Ken ranking higher than most of the P3 cast in the overall poll actually makes sense. He’s such a unique character that in order to have him as your P3 favorite, you need to *really* like him. Meanwhile, the rest of the cast has some form of equivalent.

Hearing that P6 may drop in 2025 is huge, I hope there’s a femc bc I haven’t and probably will never play that version of P3. I’m surprised how popular P3 is in Japan especially, it must be because Persona as a franchise was a lot more well known there from the mid-2000s compared to the west.
