    I believe atlus is means to use the anime names as the canon, atlus wouldn't greenlight the spinoffs using the anime names if they didnt want them too. I consider the dancing games and the games like arena which are canon to the actual persona timeline to be enough evidence for their names to be canon
    edit: ill most definitely note that narukami is the one who set this precedent with the anime being so insanely popular that they basically canonized it as being "the canon sequence of events" deciding to reference its events in p4 arena (shadow narukami, etc)

    I personally always find it weird to give a protagonist my own name in any videogame, even silent protags. It breaks the immersion and story to remind me that I'm outside the story separate from the world. I would rather just name JRPG protagonists some generic Asian sounding names, but I don't like this either because there either too similar to other name I was exposed to, or to foreign and don't fit with other names of the story. Now I know this isn't canon, not by a long shot, but it's a super interesting piece of trivia to me in particular. In the original SJ, the English manual gives the hero two different names. These names are Lance Murdock and Langdon Alger. This is definitely weird, because these are actually two obscure characters from The Simpsons, with Murdock being a famous daredevil, and Langdon being a kid that Lisa has a crush on in one episode who we never actually see. These are some weirdly deep pulls, so I imagine whoever took the screenshots for the DS manual back in the day was a Simpsons fan who just thought the names fit the character, and I have to say I agree.

  • @ShirayukiAkira
    @ShirayukiAkira 2 года назад +37

    P5: I actually like both of Joker's canon names so I use both of 'em as my profile name and when I play P5/R and Strikers, *Akira* (Manga) *Amamiya* (Anime).
    P4: Like you said in the video, his name is the least debated so I name him Yu Narukami when I play P4G.
    P3: As for this game's protagonists, I've always thought of them both having the same family name (since they share the same role in-game and in-universe, The Fool. The names being either Arisato or Shiomi) and having either similar but respectively masculine and feminine surnames (i.e. Minato and Minako), or having very different surnames (i.e. Sakuya and Kotone). Haven't played a P3 game yet. 😅
    I have nothing against the male protagonist's anime movie name *Makoto Yuuki,* but I'm not a japanese speaker and I don't want to confuse *myself* by saying just Makoto and not a last name. There was a comic-dub on RUclips I saw one time that sums up how I feel: Joker comes home to LeBlanc and says "Makoto, I'm home." both Niijima and (in this case) Yuuki greet him, and then get confused about which Makoto he was referring to.
    To quote the "You're Nothing Without Me" cover by Robbie Daymond (Akechi) and Xander Mobus (Joker):
    Akechi: "... And most people don't know your *name!*
    Is it *Ren?* Or is it *Akira?*
    Or does the player just sort of, *MAKE IT UP!?!?"*
    At the end of the day we, the players, get to choose what we name the protagonists, we don't *have to* use their canon names if we don't *want* to, it's all up to you. Same goes for other games where we can name the protagonists, like most of the Zelda games. I don't argue much about "which name is more canon than the other(s)?", I just use whatever name sounds more canon to me *personally* and as I said about Joker, I use a combination of both his canon names since I like both of them equally.

      Now I'm thinking about the Persona 3 and Persona 5 concerts that was in Phantasy Star Online 2, that I watched during when it was still airing ingame. They used the names of the dancing Persona games as the display on screen, I think. Sadly, that collab is no longer aired ingame, it left the game a long time ago. I do remember Persona 3's MC, as well as Mitsuru, being the ones dancing in that concert, while "Mass Destruction" played during it.

    My interpretation is that with the way the games constantly state this idea of infinite universes undergoing the same core events through different courses of action by infinite “you”s, this leaves it so open that any conceivable name for the protagonist can be considered canon, to your point of different interpretations of a character and how the player shapes the character.

Tatsuya and Maya are labeled by their offical names from the games they originated from. Just thought that I'd also point this out.

    • @chronica6457
      @chronica6457 2 года назад

      That's because Yu narukami was used for the Arena games and the dancing games, which are completely canon entries in the Persona timeline, therefore making it a proper canon name, while the P3 and 5 protag names were only used in their dancing games, whose canonicity is heavily debatable(and yes I know Atlus said it's canon, but if you have to say it "happened within a dream", there's still room for debate)

      @@chronica6457 He did mention that the people who made the offical spin-off games are in fact different people than the people who made the originals. Though I still kinda question about the dancing games because they were developed by P-Studio, the studio behind the mainline Persona games, and yet, they went with the main characters' anime names for it. It seems that P3D and P5D were going to start with us naming the main character whatever we want and the name you go with would've been displayed at the dances with them as the star, the menu displays and the Velvet Intenders' message for the main character about the cards they've hidden, pretty much like in the main games, the Q games and Strikers, which would explain why the characters in the cutscenes and dances of two games that are voiced never even address the main character as the anime names that they just ended up using for them in the final games, but rather just addressing them as "Leader" for P3 MC and "Joker" for P5 MC. My guess is the reason why they ditched the name system and instead went with the MCs' anime names is because it would feel weird for Persona fans that only the protagonists of P3 and P5 would get their names to be whatever the player wants while the first dancing game doesn't even include that opinion and went with Yu Narukami as the protagonist's name and every other characters in that game refer to him as that name. There would be an uncanny feeling because of this, and of course to go along with the whole "Bringing the anime name to the games" Yu got, they went with the anime names for the other two protagonists.

      @@spydersoup8447 True, they were spin-offs, but they're still Spin-offs that are 100% considered part of the canon series, unlike the 3 and 5 ones, which is why there's no going back to P4mc having *no* canon name unless they retcon all the sequels
      As for 3 and 5, it's probably just because some people didn't like the Arena games giving the MC a canon name, so, while they still use "Official" names in side material like spin-offs and Collaborations, they avoid giving them actual canon names in stuff like Main series announcements and what not

But for the final games, they seemed to have ditch that and instead went with their anime names for the MCs in the games at the last minute. The first dancing game didn't feel that way at all. It felt like the MC's name being Yu Narukami was always there since the beginning, but the other two dancing games defiantly had the feeling that the main characters' names being the anime names was really a last minute decision.

It's weird tho that the figma for Yu and Makoto don't use thier anime names and just say hero, dispite the figmas not being based of the original games. Yu's figma is from P4AU, and Makoto is from the first Persona 3 movie. I feel when persona 5 arena eventually comes out, Joker's name will be Ren, following the anime tradition.

    See I like calling P3 protag Minoto mainly due to the fact of Makoto Nijima from Persona 5 being in my top 10 favorite persona characters

    I think it's funny how it seems like Atlus got sick of the Ren/Akira debate they set the default name to Ren Amamiya in the Switch and pc release of Persona 5 Royal when you change the language settings

    I've always stuck to a pretty tried and true formula for Persona.
    P3 - Main Character
    P3P - Fem Tagonist
    P4 - Pro Tagonist
    P5 - Five Tagonist

    I usually call P4 guy as Yu Narukami coz anime and spinoff, and P5 as Ren Amamiya coz anime (it's now engraved in my brain more than Akira). P3 guy is a different case, coz I like how Minato Arisato suits him. I know I call P3 girl as Minako, but Kotone is also good now I'm confused. 😂

    Explanation for the name Hamuko for P3P Female Protagonist:
    In the original Persona 3 release, the Protagonist(Makoto Yuki) don't have a canon name, thus people just call him *鬼太郎(Kitaro, the main character of Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro)* and *主人公子(Protagonist Ko)*, but after P3P came out, same thing scenario happened with the Female Protagonist, but the name they gave her is by just removing 主人 and separating the 公 in 主人公子 to ハム(Hamu), which makes her name *ハム子(Hamuko)* .
    Also Fun fact, P3 Protagonist's name in the CM of the original P3 is just call 最速 クリア (Fastest Clear)

    In the PC version of P5R, if you go in the game's files and delete the name you put for the protagonist, the next time you launch the game, the name defaults to Ren Amamiya. I haven't tried it with P3R or P4G, but I imagine they do the same thing with Yu Narukami and Makoto Yuki respectively. So there's your proof that Atlus considers the anime names cannon in the main games as well, not just the spin-offs.

    You forgot to mention that in the manual for smt strange journey, it shows the protagonist being named after simpsons characters. The ones in it are Langdon Alger, Lance Murdock, and Shabadoo

    One that I've heard a lot from the Japanese side for P3's MC is "Kitarō" (キタロー). Like, with all due respect, where th did that one come from?

    I just call them which ever names I like in the rare occasion I don’t call them their title (such as joker and Demi-fiend) or “Game” protag
