My beloved Sega Genesis was the first console I ever had. I loved it until it was stolen from my house, I was a 6 years old crying because my console was gone, then my older brother told me, do not worry, there's a console that works with cds, and the controller has geometric symbols, after a few weeks my mom bought us the Playstation, and I grew up with that beauty. But the Genesis has a special place in my hearth, I remember playing Shinobi III, Eswat and many other games, now thanks to emulation I can relive those beautiful times
Absolutely. I would have been crushed too if mine was stolen as it's such a great thing to play. But If you want the console back you can get them relatively cheap from second hand exchange stores. I have around 50 games from the 90s on my original console but have most on emulation now so I can dip into the whole library of them whenever I want. 👍
The fact that Landstalker is on this list made my day. As frustrating as it can be I love that game to death. It’s criminal how many people have slept on it and it NEEDS some kind of reboot today.
World of Illusion is one of the most underrated Disney games out there. Remember spending hours at my friend's house trying to finish it with two players. Yeah not the most complex soundtrack you'll ever hear but I think it has a memorable charm. The value pack cartridges are where it really shines, you can get a bunch of really good games bundled together.
Landstalker was one of my favorite surprises of the Genesis library. And World of Illusion needs more love! It's insane how cheap it is! (Got mine cart only for $9.99!)
It’s my favorite beat em up of all time for me. I enjoy this even more than Smash Bros. And that’s coming from a Nintendo fan!

it's not just the best Genesis beat em up, it's one of the best beat em up's ever on any platform. 3 would have been as good as 2, except the soundtrack wasn't nearly as good.
Oh dear God yesssss!!! Biohazard Battle (Crying in Japan) is still to this day one of my favourite games ever, and you hardly ever see anyone talking about it. EVERY Genesis/Megadrive owner should have this, and if you down own a Genesis, buy one to play this game. Also Landstalker is awesome, but the entire series is niche and under-the-radar because people don't realise this is one of the few isometric games in the entire history of mankind that DOES actually control well. Dark Saviour is surprisingly cheap for a Saturn RPG, and nobody ever bothered to fan-translate Ladystalker on the SNES (although, seeing as its Japanese, with a title like that it could be ANYTHING.) The only thing I disagree with is you're view on Streets of Rage 2, people shouldn't buy it because its better than the prequel, people should buy it because to this day it is still the greatest and most replayable scrolling beat-em-up ever made. SOR2 is to the 2D Final Fight genre what Super Mario World is to platformers, unarguably the greatest one of all time, even now coming up to 30 years later they are yet to be surpassed. TOTALLY undersold how important picking that game up is, but another great video nonetheless.
I love Landstalker! Great game! It still looks great today. I still have my cart from back in the day. But I prefer to play the game today on my PC with an emulator that has save anywhere. Being able to save before a difficult jump makes the platforming a lot less frustrating.
The 2 player option on real deal boxing is where the fun is though... Played hours and hours with my friends. Just a great game. Thanks for the great videos!
Great stuff here. Rebuilding my collection. First 10 are including Sonic 2, Mega Bomberman, Vectorman, Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Krusty's Super Funhouse, NHL '96. You've given me a few picks for my next 10.
"When I Bought My Mega Drive (Model 2) In 1994, My First 3 Games Were Sonic 1, Phelios And Arrow Flash. Back Then It Felt Great To Have Arcade-Style Games At Home. "
I’m a longtime Genesis enthusiast and a newcomer to your channel. Just wanted to let you know I’ve watched several of your vids to kill some time this morning and am enjoying your content. Good stuff.
Another great video and brings back memories. Some of these games I didn't know about and would like too play. Sega Genesis has to many great games so hard to choose from.
That was a damn fine solid list. Well done, dude. I know I'm 2 years late but it popped up and no way I'm gonna not gonna watch it, haha! Hope you're well!!
Streets of Rage 2 is my all time favorite game. No matter the generation, it's always my favorite. The replay value is through the roof, and the soundtrack is phenomenal.
My first 10 Genesis games were 1. Ghost And Gouls 2. Alex Kidd 3. Cyberball 4. Moonwalker 5. Buster Douglas Boxing 6. Strider 7. Sword of Vermillion 8. Gain Ground 9. Kings Bounty 10. Madden 92 or Rampart
Great list.. So many great games for this console. I play the Sonic 1-3 mostly on this. So many side scrollers and beat em ups on this system. I love the fact that the camera goes along with youso that you see the whole screen. New gen games don't do that.
Super Monaco GP was pretty great back then with the expanded tracks etc not found in the arcade version, even though it took a hefty graphical hit. It sounded great, and had great gameplay!
The music is some of the best on the Megadrive/Genesis, and it's an astonishingly deep game; playing with 7 gears and mastering each track really pays off. It expanded hugely on the career mode in Super Hang On.
Great list! Landstalker is my favorite on the system, I’m glad you mentioned it. Interestingly, this game is highly praised in Europe and not so much in the US. For those not into boxing, I d have put Jungle Strike instead for example. You’re doing a very good job with your channel!
This was a nice surprise. I thought it was going to be you regaling us of your first 10 Genesis games (which I'd also be interested in watching, if you haven't already done so), but I liked what you did here. Going with the 6-pak is cheating, if ever so slightly, but it does give folks a good starting point. A couple on this list I don't have, and didn't know they were so cheap, so I may have to track those down. I was surprised to not see Sonic 2 on the list, but I generally prefer the 1st game anyway, so strictly from a personal preference standpoint, that doesn't bother me. Everyone knows about Sonic anyway, and it seems like an obvious choice.
What a great list. Great Content. That box in the beginning was just like the box my Sega Genesis came in. It was funny, I wanted a Nintendo but they bought this instead. It was more expensive and next gen at the time. I played it so much I could memorize and pass most games in less than an hour. You have a new subscriber.
No phantasy star 4, cyborg justice, Robocop versus terminator, shining force, NBA jam, mortal Kombat, sonic 2, sonic 3,sonic and knuckles, or vector man? Shenanigans!
Amazing amazing video. I was fortunate enough to get a Japanese Megadrive in mid 1992 to share with my brothers. It remains my favorite console of all times. Good to know some of these amazing games are still affordable to new comers to the system.
World of Illusion is such a Gem! It was my first game i ever finish ( i was around 7 ) . Great Gameplay, and perfect for kids. Other games i could sugest for a first collection would be Golden Axe 3 & Jurasic Park Lost World 3 , great for multiplayer or even solo.
So glad I found your channel. Been playing the Sega Genesis since I was 3 years old. I was luck to have a brother who was ten years older than me and bought all the systems in the 90's.
I Am Trip Hawkins _ - I agree and I own the Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection as well as the recently released compilation for the XBOX ONE and SONY PS4, however I along with many others prefer to also own the original games CIB.
I used to love Eswat. Like many games back then, got it just based on having a cool cover. Turned out to be one of my favorite games of that era. Awesome vibe that was really different at the time.
I downloaded an emulator and got the Thunderforce 3 rom the other day. First time playing it in 30 years and only took me a few hours to complete it once my memory of the game came back. I was in heaven playing it with my headphones on, blasting the music out. Try it! Nostalgia at its finest!
Amazing video!! Sega Lord X is so on par IT'S SCARY!! When I originally got my Genesis back in the day I grabbed the 6 pack, Eswat, Shinobi 3, and bio hazard battle!!
Nice! When I re-bought my Genesis around 2000, I got 6 Pak with it (and Thunderforce III, because TF3 was still cheap and I used to own it BITD-- wish some of these games weren't so expensive now!)
I got my Genesis for Christmas which came with Sonic 2 and my parents bought me Joe Montana Football, Sub Terrania, Columns and Cool Spot. Cool Spot was a surprisingly good game and Sub Terrania was also awesome. I think Cool Spot and Sub Terrania would be considered hidden gems.
Great advice. Start off with some of the best, more available carts and see how well you like Genesis. Sega games are mostly like fine wine, but mine mostly have missing or torn labels because I wanted them even cheaper.
@@SegaLordX funny story about Altered Beast I had a video planned about how much I love the game even though I couldn't beat the second level. I was going to record it this weekend then last night I beat the game for the first time ever lol
I love Sega and I'm glad you put The Revenge of Shinobi on the list because its my favorite game of all time. That's why I use a Revenge of Shinobi mug on my set.
I had the SEGA Mega Drive, when I was a teenager. I lost it for a while and then retrieved it when I was older. My sister and I shared a boxful of games, some of which were for two players on the teenage part. When I was older, and retrieved the Mega Drive from a Car Boot Sale, it came complete with two joysticks and my first and second favourite Mega Drive Games: Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. To make up a collection of five Mega Drive Games I was happy with, the other three games in the line-up were Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion and Aladdin. Those are the best five Mega Drive Games I've ever played.
Just bought a Genesis 2, Revenge of Shinobi, Captain America and the Avengers, Six Pack, X-Men, and Kid Chameleon. I’m really really excited about starting my Genesis collection!
Great video man! That's a good list. I actually know someone who has just started collecting for the genesis. He's already got a good start. I suggested to him to check out SOR 2, Rocket Knight Adventures, Sonic, And Valis. I remember Landstalker from back in the day but I've never played it. I've passed it up now and then when I've seen it but I think I will get it the next time I come across it.
I wanted to do so earlier, but I was between jobs myself for a while! You're providing content/info we simply can't get anywhere else, been watching since the beginning of the old channel, keep it up brother we appreciate you
Thanks. I really tried to pick a group that was affordable and did the hardware justice. The Genesis has a bunch of these kinds of games, so this easily could have been a Top 50.
I honestly don’t remember the first 10 games I played on the Sega Genesis, but I remember that when my family purchased a Genesis it came packaged with Altered Beast. I remember when Sonic came out _that_ became the game packaged with the Genesis, but Sega allowed people who purchased the system prior to the release of Sonic to call a 1-800 number and they were mailed a free copy of Sonic. That’s how my family got the game. But for the most part I was a spectator watching my dad play rented games on the system and only played a couple that were available to us until the Sega Channel was released.
I remember seeing my friends older brothers playing Road Rash and Madden everyday after school. I had a NES and wanted a Genesis so bad… I finally got one on my 6th birthday in 1994 when the Model 2 came out. It was MY console. Not the family console as the NES and Atari 2600 were. This is a great list.
Man,im from Brazil, and i love yours videos,im a great fan o sega genesis ( a.k.a: MEGA DRIVE here in Brazil ),continue with your great job,and sorry for the english.
Sonic 2, Phantasy Star II & IV, Shining Force, Herzog Zwei, Starflight, NBA Jam, Flashback, Ghoul's and Ghosts, My personal favs from when I was a kit (plus the ones you mentioned)
Very nice list. My only change would be to add a fighting game. Either Super Street Fighter 2 or Mortal Kombat 2. You hit the nail on the head with a lot of those. Sonic, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, and Road Rash are quintessential Sega series.
I considered a fighting game, but kinda felt that the 1 on 1 fighter didn't really become a thing until well into the Genesis life cycle. When they did show up regularly, they were often cut way back from the arcade source material.
@@SegaLordX Fair enough. I had a SNES first and didn't get a Genesis until very late in the console's life. We probably view the console from very different perspectives.
What's the top view Saturn game shown at 21:28? I looked around your Saturn videos a bit and couldn't find what it was. Also: Bio-Hazard Battle is a great recommendation. That game deserves a lot more attention than it gets. But if someone likes top down shooters more than side-scrollers, can I recommend Fire Shark? I love that game and prefer it to Truxton. Massively underrated IMO.
Another great video. I must say I really appreciate your speaking style. Very calming and your grammar and diction are on point. I'm pondering getting a Genesis as the AtGames retro offerings get terrible reviews. Will there be a Part 2 to this video?
My first 10 were Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Columns, Truxton, Lasorda Baseball, Phantasy Star 2, Joe Montana Football, Moonwalker, Pat Riley's Basketball, and Revenge of Shinobi. That was back when I bought games because of price or birthday gifts/xmas gifts. Sports were usually cheaper so I bought them up. Columns was also cheaper than most. I think it was $30 compared to $50 to $60 the others. Loved them all.
6pak is a good choice, but I'd also try and find a first run copy of Revenge of Shinobi. Sega went their own way, used Batman, Spiderman, The Terminator and Godzilla as bosses, rights be damned!
I wouldn't really call it underrated, as there are a lot of people out there that like ESWAT. It's not talked about as often maybe, but it's definitely not underrated.
For new Genesis players I recommend Shinobi. (Shinobi 3 is an acquired taste) Back in the day I owned a very modest Genesis collection. I think it was 6 games. It was very difficult to know which games to buy at the time due to a lack of RUclips and the difficulties of advertising. Hyperstone Heist was one of those games. The Sonic games (all 5) too.
Kudos for cramming such an epic experience of Genesis console gaming to ten titles. Obviously there is room for another ten great titles just as easily as the list goes on and on... Gunstar Heroes MUSHA Ghouls 'n Ghosts Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Thunder Force III X-Men 2 Clone Wars Target Earth TMNT the Hyperstone Heist Phantasy Star IV Robocop vs. The Terminator
I guess he was focussing on the accessible and cheap games to start a collection here. Some must haves there but some can be very expensive to get hold of.
I love your videos, man, (specifically the Genesis videos), but you pretty much talk about the same games in all of them...E-Swat, a Mickey game, Road Rash, and Streets of Rage 2...I hope your future Genesis games have more diversity in them. Thanks for the content, though ~ a huge Sega Genesis fan
Is there ever a bad time to talk about great Genesis games? My next Genesis video has a bunch of games I have never talked about in it. You want diversity, you'll get it there. ;)
Herzog Zwei is IMHO a must-have, its a brilliant, criminally overlooked RTS game that is one of the greatest two-player competitive games ever made, with battles that can last for hours. Thunderforce 3 and 4: These two shoot 'em ups are glorious, with 4 being one of the most impressive technical feats on the Megadrive/Genesis. Alisia Dragoon: A polished, fun platform/shooter, beautiful visuals and great music. Shining Force 1 & 2: Brilliant Strategy RPGs that rival Fire Emblem. Phantasy Star 4: Amazing RPG, and its two predecessors are no slouches either, with 2 having one of the greatest ending plot twists in videogame history. Super Monaco GP 1 & 2: Awesome racing sims, with astonishing depth and replay value for a game of this era. SMGP2 even had Ayrton Senna personally involved in its design. Sega turned an arcade game into one of the greatest racing sims ever. Street Fighter 2: Awesome arcade port. Ranger X: Awesome shooter with some very inventive gameplay and some of the best visuals on the system.
First of your videos I've seen, really well done, and good list. I'd recommend Nhl 94 too! Super cheap, like me. Or I could go to pricecharting and list off some of the priciest games out there like some commentors
I bought the Genesis and the Sega CD at the same time since it was sold as a set, and I already had an SNES. I don't remember the exact order but the first was Strider (cheap at that time), then Phantasy Star 2, 3, 4, Sonic CD, Lunar 1, Snatcher, Shining Force CD, Gunstar Heroes, and Fatal Fury Special CD. I think thats all I had. I bought it around 1993-4 ( towards the end life) and move on to the Sega Saturn the first day it came out.
The first five that I got with my Model 2 Genesis as a kid were Sonic, Sonic 2, Mortal Kombat, Sword of Vermilion, and Thunder Force II. The latter two I had never heard about until the Kay Bee Toys employee recommended them...and I've loved them ever since. P.S. ESWAT is really underrated.
I got my Genesis a couple of years ago, but I decided to get Duke Nukem 3D as my first game. A week later I find Sonic 1 at Goodwill. I love this console!
First games I remember getting? Strider Revenge Of Shinobi Streets Of Rage Castle Of Illusion Desert Strike Reading C+VG sold the machine to me. I also picked up: The Immortal and Corporation as I hadn't gotten them on the ST. I ignored MD Ghouls n Ghosts, as I had played and completed it on C64 and the ST.
ill grand you a lot of them are cheap, (and all great) but some of them, like shinobi 3 and biohazard are getting mighty pricey in northern europe. Im still missing landstalker and biohazard, but since im past the 140 plus mark on my collection, im sure I can wait with getting them. Great video as always sir :)
I find streets of rage 2 to be the archetypal megadrive game. The tonnes of sprites on the screen and the great electronic music. So defining of the megadrive and that era.
Solid list, don't agree on every game but we don't have to because we both love the Genesis and that's enough for me. Happy to see Shinobi 3, arguably the most mechanically advanced and one of the very best 16-bit action platformers of its time (alongside MMX, Super M, Contra 3 etc) but most ppl don't care because it's not Konami, Capcom or Nintendo. Super Hang On is unappreciated and great. So is Bio Hazard Battle, haunting score with silky smooth gameplay. Yeah the 6Pak is awesome and thanks for not just spamming Sonic games. Lastly I need to try E-Swat.
The thing about these lists is that there are a ton of great games that could be interchangeable with any one of them. It's less about the specific game, and more about the conversations around them.
I recommend the 6-Pak and a Sega Genesis as the first two items to pick up for any retro game enthusiast. It's the best bang for your buck on any platform in my opinion. I've been rocking this cartidge since before I could even read. I was raised on the Streets of Rage lmao.
-I can't remember all my first 10- Turns out I can! -but among them was- they are (random order) : Sonic, Ranger X, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Dragon's Fury (aka: Devils Crush on Turbografx-16), Pac-Man 2, Columns III, American Gladiators, X-Men, Ghouls N Ghosts, Sonic Spinball.
My older sister had a genesis and 30 games and presented to me, the first game i played was Collums because as i was very young i thought the others to be too much complex, kkkk, and from that 30 games my favorites over the years became Sonic 1, Streets of Rage 1, Decap Attack, Bonanza Bros., Altered Beast and Golden Axe 1

Geometric symbols?
That was not a good upgrade.

I discovered Bio-Hazard Battle on the recent Sega Genesis Classics collection for PS4/X1. That is really good and I'd never heard of it.
Bio Hazard Battle is a hidden gem. Great game, a complete blast.
And the entire SOR2 soundtrack is siiiiiiiiiick
YES! Bio Hazard Battle is awesome! Definitely one of my favorite shooters ever. It's a shame more people don't know how good it is.
Great list, I LOVE ESwat and Real Deal Boxing!! So cool to see someone else mention these.
Solid list. Especially the inclusion of Shinobi 3. It's such a solid game, it almost feels like it had no business being on a 16-bit console.
The music in world of illusion is beautiful perfect for that amazing game
I love Landstalker! Great game! It still looks great today. I still have my cart from back in the day. But I prefer to play the game today on my PC with an emulator that has save anywhere. Being able to save before a difficult jump makes the platforming a lot less frustrating.

Haha, I was the big brother in my family, with 2 siblings that benefit from my systems and games. Tis the circle of life it seems.
Got most of them from the list on the Sega Genesis Mini.
Also, I think it would be nice to see you more often in the videos. It gives it am ore personable feel. You are a cool dude.

The fun available has nothing to do with labels. I'd get the discount too.
Moon Beach. Best Streets of rage song. Excellent intro to the video song.
Great video. How about a 'your next 10 games"?
Glad you added landstalker here. Still my favorite game
Awesome picks mate some solid titles there.
I'd like to add Sonic 2, and Altered Beast into the list. But I honestly can't argue with your choices
I think I'm going to stay away from Altered Beast for awhile. Master System fans are still pissed I didn't like that version. ;)
@@SegaLordX funny story about Altered Beast I had a video planned about how much I love the game even though I couldn't beat the second level. I was going to record it this weekend then last night I beat the game for the first time ever lol
That 6 pack is some excellent titles and value. Good pick.
The 6-Pak is a good place to start. I have this cartridge, and so happy I do.
This channel is amazing! Thank you Sega Lord!
Thank you sir. I appreciate the comment.
Why does Donald Duck have to jump onto things in the water trying to cross. He's a duck. 20:15
13:27 ahhhhhhhhh what glorious music that takes me back , such great sounds
Good list! I think it's a pretty well-rounded starting place
Beyond Oasis is another that is great if you want a fun adventure style game.
Great video man. Huge fan of E-Swat here as well. Just became a Patreon this week because of your unparalleled content, keep it up we love it!
Thank you for that support. It's really helping at the moment.
I wanted to do so earlier, but I was between jobs myself for a while! You're providing content/info we simply can't get anywhere else, been watching since the beginning of the old channel, keep it up brother we appreciate you
Wow. Great list! Thanks. Better than I expected.
Thanks. I really tried to pick a group that was affordable and did the hardware justice. The Genesis has a bunch of these kinds of games, so this easily could have been a Top 50.
Nice! I suppose you could do new volumes in the sub-series then.
Shinobi 3 is absolutely essential
No worries my friend. Thank you for the post. :)
I really remember getting Strider for my birthday. It blew me away.
Excellent video. You've earned my sub, sir. 🤘
Great episode! Loved this one
For hardcore Genesis collectors, I'd agree. It tends to be expensive if the seller knows what he has.
2:20 good thing i still havnt gotten the first sonic game. Im definitely going to get this 6pac cartridge.
I've said it before but it bears repeating: ESWAT is the single most underrated title in the entire Genesis library
You have my vote. Criminally underrated.
I wouldn't really call it underrated, as there are a lot of people out there that like ESWAT. It's not talked about as often maybe, but it's definitely not underrated.
For new Genesis players I recommend Shinobi. (Shinobi 3 is an acquired taste)
Back in the day I owned a very modest Genesis collection. I think it was 6 games. It was very difficult to know which games to buy at the time due to a lack of RUclips and the difficulties of advertising. Hyperstone Heist was one of those games. The Sonic games (all 5) too.
Batman sountrack is a top 3 in any Genesis list. Looove that 1st stage music.
Excellent work x, long live the Genesis....
Kudos for cramming such an epic experience of Genesis console gaming to ten titles. Obviously there is room for another ten great titles just as easily as the list goes on and on...
Gunstar Heroes
MUSHA
Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Thunder Force III
X-Men 2 Clone Wars
Target Earth
TMNT the Hyperstone Heist
Phantasy Star IV
Robocop vs.
I liked nhl 93 myself. Madden 93 nba jam 93 was a great year for sports games.
I'm playing Monster World 4 on the Mega Drive Mini atm, It's a great little game I'm really liking it
First games I remember getting?
Strider
Revenge Of Shinobi
Streets Of Rage
Castle Of Illusion
Desert Strike
Reading C+VG sold the machine to me.
I also picked up:
The Immortal and Corporation as I hadn't gotten them on the ST.
I ignored MD Ghouls n Ghosts, as I had played and completed it on C64 and the ST.
We love you man!
ill grand you a lot of them are cheap, (and all great) but some of them, like shinobi 3 and biohazard are getting mighty pricey in northern europe.
Was Shinobi the birth of the back up alarm , in the street surfing stage ? I like to think it was .
Also worthy pickup is the castle of illusion and quackshot compilation on the mega drive- not too pricey and 2 great titles
Dude... this is a good list.
