Shallow bass drums are gonna be the new trend I can feel it. Steve Gadd gets it. I'm sure I'd love this kit. I adore my little Ludwig Questlove kit. First ever real matching kit and it's fantastic.

Shallow bass drums have been the trend for years and years now! Tons of these type "compact" kits with shallow bass drums have been on the market over the past couple of decades. The Pearl Rhythm Traveler kit, Taye GoKit, Tama Superstar Classic Neo-Mod (my fav, but discontinued), Tama Club Jam, DW Frequent Flyer, PDP Daru Jones kit, Premier Artist Heritage, and others by lesser known drum makers.

@@fartpooboxohyeah8611 I work in a drum store and have played most of these kits in showcases before stocking them. They all sound good, but all the staff agreed that the Yamaha Hip sounds the best. It sounded so good that myself and two others bought one that day. What really sold us on it was the kick drum. It sounds like a huge kick, unlike other compact kits where the sound is very hollow and box-like.
The Yamaha representative we work with explained that the Hip was one of the most prototyped drum products they have ever made. They really wanted to avoid sounding like every other compact kit on the market. So, they delved into the science of it, using birch wood instead of maple because birch works better with lower frequencies. They also made the kick drum 20 x 8, rather than the 18 x 12 kicks you usually get from other brands. It's truly an innovation in the compact drum space. You won't find any other big brand at this moment offering this type of kit with those sizes and such a great sound, all at quite an affordable price too.

Bro…awesome video as per usual, and I can’t praise this kit and Yamaha enough. I was using a Ludwig Breakbeats for a while, but I needed something to fit my 4x6’ area in my apartment. The HipGig was beyond perfect and fit to a tee. I have this in Classic White and added a 11x14” rack Tom (13” racks/floors were never my thing). This is my first Yamaha kit, too. Quality is impeccable. This looks/feels/sounds like a fine instrument vs. a wrapped toy. Have the most amazing time with this kit, good sir. Thank you for the great vids as always.

For almost 15 years I "compact gigged" with a Pearl Rhythm Traveler kit which had the same sized snare and bass drum as the Hip does. Never had any problem with cracking or thudding -- the bass and snare sounded great. Where the Hip has it beat is the toms sound spectacular, and the RT's toms needed better heads, some moongel and a prayer that they'd stay tuned enough to get through the show.

I think for the most part, all the drum manufacturers are hitting it out of the park with their mini and compact kits! This Yamaha sounds great. i bought this exact kit a year ago, and couldn't be happier. Nothing but compliments from every band and musician I've used it with. I absolutely love playing it. The 20" shallow bass drum just has more bottom end and punch than the micro 16" kick drums . I also present it as an option to other musicians doing duos/trios/"acoustic" gigs....I tell them it's a step above a cajon, but not quite my full big rig kit in 13/16/24 sizes. Take your pick, and i'll show up accordingly. I also always use a Senheiser e901 boundry mic inside the kick and its just the perfect sound. You can't lose, it wins in every room.

I love my Hip Kit. I did not add a port to the front BD Head. It already has enough punch and the non ported head adds a lot or resonance. I just ordered the regular Birch toms 10, 12, 13 and 14 sizes with a double tom mount that fits on the BD. The toms won't add much space on the BD and a 14 Floor tom vs the 13 Snom also doesn't take up much space. I will pick what toms fit the space. The BD is great. I just bought them in a whim and just love them. I will also use for recording a specific sound. The BD has enough bottom especially if you don't bury the beater and the right beater type. You can really lay in to the BD and it's solid. Perfect BD for smaller gigs, recording and I'll tune it for Jazz.

I compared that DW Erskine kit to the Yammies, Sonor, Ludwig, PDP, and Gretsch kits, and it won hands down for sounding like a full sized kit in bop sizes. Not the cheapest option, but definitely sounds the best in a tiny package. You can make anything sound good, Rob! ...and sell it too! ;)

Been using this kit for about a year and I am completely happy with it! You can fit all the drums in a 18/20 hardcase so you are carrying all your drums in 1 bag. I use it with every live gig at this point, it's easy for me to carry and it sounds amazing to play. The kick sounds like a proper kick drum. With other compact drums I always found that the small kick drums sound like your hitting a box, no real tone. I think its because the yamaha kick is big and shallow rather than deep and small like you see with other compact kits.

You need the Yamaha Crosstown aluminum super-light stands with that kit.

Hello Rob, this is a killer snare sound. Can you tell us the model/number of the puresound snare wires you put on the snare?

I always fancied a small cocktail kit - and looks like Yamaha are on to a winner with this kit. - I always fancied a bigger drum room too, but that's never gonna happen - so maybe I'll get a smaller kit instead!!

It’s funny how us guys 6’ and over will completely change vibes and performances once we’re actually comfortable on a kit high enough for us.
When I used my church’s pocket kit lowered and had to adapt, I felt all constrained.
They had me bring my own kit and I was at full playing height and level… so much more comfortable and able 🙏🏽

Whats the depth of the kick shell without the hoops? I have a 20” kick I’m planning to throw on my table saw and cut down…wondering what to cut it down to. Also considering cutting from the center and putting a gasket on it so that I could open it and use it as a storage bin and then I wouldn’t have to disturb my bearing edges either.

one thing im learning about drums "im a super NOOB" is that nothing is how it sounds. Until you hear things in person and without mics you never know what anything sounds like. Im looking sideways at my new 500$$ 15" Zeldjian hihats that im not totally happy with. lol
