mongolz1000 They all aim as if you are going in a straight line from your position. So to dodge them, just begin turning before they fire. If you are in full turn, they will always be WAY off. Never be going straight with your side to the torpedo droppers, and you will be fine.
Richard Smith if they are human players, not AI not newbie in their fresh tier 4 CV. If it is a well aim shot, doesn't matter how skilled the BB driver is, he will at least take two torps per successful 4 plane squadron. Since the AA on Iowa is so good, she will take about one per squadron(safe estimate)the number of torps launch in th first wave is about 4*2*10, if 1/4 of them hits, he will at least take 20. If the players coordinate, and launch from diffferent side, he will certain take more. This is just a video kicking puppies
tragedyofwind Well, its doesn't matter if its human or not. If you are turning when they are dropped, you will naturally have an easier time dodging. It is easier to stop turning than it is to start. I agree that carriers are too strong right now. Torpedo bombers need to be doing significantly less damage to balance it.

Yeah, I'm sorry, i answered before watching the whole video and in the end, there was no more planes to be afraid of. So yep, aiming right with the AP should've been faster, but he would've been to be careful with the overpen otherwise.

I wouldn't be surprised if most of the damage done to the Iowa was from the carriers' guns, not planes. Unless the aim was to get the Iowa's secondary guns into the action - they did do about as much damage as the main guns (about 179K damage if I recall correctly). Still, you would hardly have taken any damage if you just smashed them from afar. Wouldn't be anywhere as much fun though... :).

well, it looked like OP was gonna die because of the secondaries at one point. much less risky to stay at short range (< 10 km) but still out of range of secondaries (~5 km)

This is exactly what drove me away from WoWS; shells have NO consistence, sometimes they deal 1k sometimes they deal 200 or less, and let's be real: do you think such high caliber of rounds should only be doing 2k or less to these hoshos? get real, feels like we are firing BB guns (toy guns, not battleship guns) in these ships. AP is too unreliable because it is too much affected by random angles and RNG meaning you either hit for 10k+ with citadels or absolutelly 0 damage. HE is kind of on the same boat: game tells you to use HE on weakly armored targets- puff, 200 damage per shell while AP could be doing more (or not, depending on rng). Damage/armor/penetration models are totally out of this world in this game. I had fun while I had my high tiered ships during closed beta but as soon as the wipe came I knew I wasn't going to pick that game up and grind through this bullshit again. And before anyone says "It's beta"... they had the mechanics right at the start, until they decided to play around with them by 1st) buffing HE to the point where no one bothered with AP; setting people on fire every 10 seconds was what rulled. 2nd) Completelly reworking armor models and nerfing AP rounds from doing small hull damage even if they bounced (which in terms means AP got double nerfed, less penetration and less damage overall). Why do you think cruisers are often praised as the best class? Joi kax its all about where you hit, just like IRL. Ships could take several hundred hits and dont sink and at other times it literaly takes a single shot to sink it. The Hood for example was sunk by the bismarck with an single shell ripping it apart by hitting the magazin while the british navy wasnt capable of sinking the bismarck even after it was abbandoned by its crew and it then was sunk by the crew which set up explosives to prevent them from getting any intel. You cant blaim the game for not knowing where to aim. Firing AP at the superstructure dont get you anywhere, firinging it at unarmored targets doesnt do anything either since the shells pass right through and only some kinetic damage will be inflicted. HE is great for unarmored ships and setting stuff on fire. Its all about knowing your ammo.

Joi kax aim for the citadels like any other skilled player and you are guaranteed even with only an single hit to deal atleast 15k damage depending on your shell.

KlausKinski Hits are not at all rare and in my opinion, the Des Moines is more effective as an AA ship than the Baltimore. With the captain crew skills of increased AA efficiency and range partnered with the 20% AA effectiveness module, the AA dominates and with the "Y key" buff in game, the AA chews through squadrons.

KlausKinski Granted that HE will provide the best option at the moment offensively, you still need the rest of your team to defeat the opposing team, and one of the most dangerous threats is bombers. HE right now is stupidly overpowered and fire could be set in the water in the current game, but War Gaming announced in their recent update notes (today) that AP will receive less of a chance to ricochet off of ships traveling toward you at a weird angle and they are trying to re-balance HE and AP.
How did you get to be 1 Sway Back against 12 aircraft carriers?, that looked awesome, probably wouldn't of been so close to dead if you would of used AP on them, 1 Iowa against a max capacity team of St Louis Cruisers, I've got a computer specially designed for gaming an I get a lag for 1 to 3 seconds, it's either an overload on the internet or the game overloading, but not everybody is experiencing the problem from lag, most probably the internet overloading from the information, between having a slow not very maneuverable ship and the long lagging, Torpedoes are a royal pain, lol, but it's a great game I'm sure you would of had a wonderful amount of XP and credits from that battle, if it wasn't just practice.
God I miss these sounds. The game sounded so much better back in CBT. ships would groan and moan under heavy fire, AA sounded amazing and you could distinguish which of your curtain of AA was firing, intermittent poofs were for the DP artillery, more sustained popping that would go in and out of sync for your mid range AA, and then the absolute hell of rapid fire close range AA. If you were a decent captain that could distinguish which of his or her AA was firing it could give you a heads up on how close or far the planes were away so you could start taking action. not to mention the AA had a sort of sound flavor, I.E. USN AA sounded distinctly different from IJN AA... Here's hoping we get some of that back with the AA sound improvements coming in 0.5.14

This battle should have been Fletcher-Class Destroyer vs Hoshos. You could maneuver through the torps, swiftly destroy the carriers with torps/guns, and the Fletcher is known for it's AA capabilities so you could still knock down the planes.
look at how the AA guns actually turn and you can see the shell tracers leaving from the ship. compare that to now where the guns dont move at all and the fire starts 2 km from the ship. WG are strange
That woulda gone a LOT quicker with AP. I mean... you even had all the planes shot down and were still using HE lol. Also you could have just dodged torps till they ran out then ranged them so you weren't getting hit by their secondaries.
tho gun do have a hell of the range Advantage you could have set 16-17 kilometers away from them and blown their fucking ass out of the water without any of their secondary guns hitting you you just have to worry about fucking aircraft you don't always have to get up and close that's what a fucking battleship is meant for the blow shit up far away
Since the enemy carriers are static, why would sail within range of their guns???? Just pick them off from beyond their range. They can only shoot a couple of miles; you can shoot 15 miles or so.

It would have been a lot easier for you if, after you shot down all of their torpedo bombers, you stayed outside of the range of their guns so that they couldn't do anything to you. You could have only taken damage from their torps and you could have sniped them with your vastly superior range and not have been set on fire. :)

In real life, wouldn't over penning create holes that could in turn cause flooding? I mean, that is how a lot of pirate ships were sunk.

HE right now is stupidly overpowered and fire could be set in the water in the current game, but War Gaming announced in their recent update notes (today) that AP will receive less of a chance to ricochet off of ships traveling toward you at a weird angle and they are trying to re-balance HE and AP.

How did you get to be 1 Sway Back against 12 aircraft carriers?, that looked awesome, probably wouldn't of been so close to dead if you would of used AP on them, 1 Iowa against a max capacity team of St Louis Cruisers, I've got a computer specially designed for gaming an I get a lag for 1 to 3 seconds, it's either an overload on the internet or the game overloading, but not everybody is experiencing the problem from lag, most probably the internet overloading from the information, between having a slow not very maneuverable ship and the long lagging, Torpedoes are a royal pain, lol, but it's a great game I'm sure you would of had a wonderful amount of XP and credits from that battle, if it wasn't just practice.
God I miss these sounds. The game sounded so much better back in CBT. ships would groan and moan under heavy fire, AA sounded amazing and you could distinguish which of your curtain of AA was firing, intermittent poofs were for the DP artillery, more sustained popping that would go in and out of sync for your mid range AA, and then the absolute hell of rapid fire close range AA. If you were a decent captain that could distinguish which of his or her AA was firing it could give you a heads up on how close or far the planes were away so you could start taking action. not to mention the AA had a sort of sound flavor, I.E. USN AA sounded distinctly different from IJN AA... Here's hoping we get some of that back with the AA sound improvements coming in 0.5.14
LOLing at all the "why did you get in range of the CV's secondarys???" comments. Because it would have made for a boring-as-f*ck "look at me bully some anchored bots" video. Was quite fun to see and I did wonder if the CVs would finally get you right at the end :D

This battle should have been Fletcher-Class Destroyer vs Hoshos. You could maneuver through the torps, swiftly destroy the carriers with torps/guns, and the Fletcher is known for it's AA capabilities so you could still knock down the planes.
look at how the AA guns actually turn and you can see the shell tracers leaving from the ship. compare that to now where the guns dont move at all and the fire starts 2 km from the ship. WG are strange
That woulda gone a LOT quicker with AP. I mean... you even had all the planes shot down and were still using HE lol. Also you could have just dodged torps till they ran out then ranged them so you weren't getting hit by their secondaries.
tho gun do have a hell of the range Advantage you could have set 16-17 kilometers away from them and blown their fucking ass out of the water without any of their secondary guns hitting you you just have to worry about fucking aircraft you don't always have to get up and close that's what a fucking battleship is meant for the blow shit up far away
Since the enemy carriers are static, why would sail within range of their guns???? Just pick them off from beyond their range. They can only shoot a couple of miles; you can shoot 15 miles or so.
I'm guessing this was how the US Navy tested the Iowa-class torpedo protection.

I'm confused on how you took so little damage from each torp... I get hit by torps from aircraft, it's at least like 6K damage.

Why were you going inside the 2ndary armament of the CC'S? Your 2ndary armament range is farther isn't is? Skim the edge so they can't shoot you while you chewthem up...

It would have been a lot easier for you if, after you shot down all of their torpedo bombers, you stayed outside of the range of their guns so that they couldn't do anything to you. You could have only taken damage from their torps and you could have sniped them with your vastly superior range and not have been set on fire. :)
