In the Midwest Panera charges $8 or $9 for a full sandwich, sub shops like Jersey Mike's and Firehouse charge $12 for a foot long sub, any quality deli the sandwiches start at $9 and go up to $15, $16 depending on the meat. So I imagine in places like LA, NY or CHI you can add several dollars to those prices.
@@metaLungiez Agreed, Im from STL and STL Bread Co (Panera) sells sandwiches for like $5-6 and of course a foot long would cost more because its 3x the size of that dinky sandwich, not to mention you’re typically getting 2-3 kinds of meat and however many veggies
well, i'm pretty sure Josh talks about some good quality juicy sandwiches from a nice street food place or cafe. If his sandwich would be on a menu somewhere it easily would cost from 8 to 12 dollars if you put some cheese and lettuce together on a toast, it obviously would not cost 12 dollars anywhere in the world and pizza, well, it's Pizza hut. lol. it's more or less the same price everywhere

Mr Weissman, my new food guru. Excellent tips, humor, and everything is do able, economical without being 'cheap', and looks amazing. Going to take my foodie skills to a new impressive level! My menu and food prep/ planning just got the shake up it needed. Thanks!
I made this today. It turned out wonderfully! Some notes: I used boneless skinless chicken breast which worked well so even if you can’t find turkey, give it a go! I topped mine with a few different spices before roasting but my family liked paprika the best. The brine as listed is 5.4% salt by weight. The meat I used was Kosher (already salty) so I dialled back the salt to 5% and it was still a tad salty. When I make this again I’m going to aim for 4.5%.
I have to agree you can make some really choice, really cheap sandwiches if you know what to do. I've got a favorite of mine that I use, personally. Bread: anything that toasts well and tastes good. Meat: I either go with ham or pork shoulder. I can get an absolutely monstrously huge pre-smoked ham for $30 CAD, cut it into reasonably chunks, and freeze whatever I'm not using. Ham holds up to freezing really well and I'll have well over a month of sandwiches with that meat or more depending on how much I use, plus there's no cooking involved. For pork shoulder I can get a really big one for $9 CAD, enough for a dozen sandwiches for more, and cooking is just 'salt, pepper, oven, cook for X hours, broil for ten-ish minutes at the end'. So easy, so cheap, and the resulting crispy pork crackling is so ridiculously good with sandwiches. From there you can just buy whatever cheese and condiments you want. Add some lettuce and sliced tomato, you'll have a sandwich that'll fill you up for most of the day on its own, tastes great, and is _very_ cheap. Not as cheap as just PB&J of course, but a damn good upgrade for very little price. This method also requires about 1/10th of the kitchen tools and prep time as Josh's too so, bonus there in my lazy books. I've never done a full dive on prices but there's a ton of room for finding cheaper options or buying in bulk to save on cost with this method (namely, buying in bulk that doesn't require you to eat a ton at once before it goes bad). Recently I also started spicing up my sandwiches with some home-grown basil too, and what a great addition. The plant was only a few bucks and just needs water, and has fueled dozens of sandwiches with so much fresh flavor.
I've made this a couple times and it is legitimately the best sandwich I've ever made. I think it has less to do with the turkey and more to do with all the other ingredients, especially the toasted sourdough. It's definitely not cheaper than any homemade sandwich, and you'll probably waste some turkey unless you want to freeze it. Also, 30 minutes is an absurd estimate for cooking the turkey. It's taken 90 minutes or more for me.
Rewatched it again today (02-05-2023). I am so glad that Joshua is sharing so many of these tricks. I didn't even think of making my own sauce or even making special tomatoes. THANKS.
4:50 Bread of that quality costs 5 times that, in Norway. Most stuff here are multiple times as expensive as states here. That "cheap" sandwich costs 3-4$ in no time
Yea, I was thinking. Where the hell do you get a quality fresh baked loaf for 1 dollar (10 kroner)? Maybe for 1,5 dollars you could get some horrible bread (kneip)
Out of curiosity, I wonder how much it would cost to buy all of the ingredients (since you can’t buy only the amount you need for 1 sandwich) Edit: nvm he answered it. I really appreciate that! Edit: nvm again, that number can’t be right because the cheese and turkey alone would cost more than the $7.60 price.
@@duaijalqallaf exactly. I wanted to know how much you’d need to spend to buy all of the ingredients, since you can’t just buy the amount you need per sandwich. I’m guessing it’s like $50, which is why the average person goes to a sandwich shop instead
@@WishAtElevenEleven yo, I ran the numbers. This is the cheapest I could get it in the 15 minutes it took me. Mostly great value brand, lowest quantity. Also this is before tax. $32.9 Edited the price because I forgot to add the cheese. Edited again because I forgot to add old bay seasoning
@@Putrid_Filth well a year later now with all this inflation I think the 4.99 sandwiches I was seeing are now 7.99 lol. A meal with other food I could see being that high but not a sandwich.
Who in the hell spends $12 for a sandwich? I mean, a 9-inch sub at a solid Italian deli here in Chicago is about $8-$9. OK, at the high-end of places I can find one for almost $12 ($11.50). But that's not "average." Average sandwich, I'd say, is about $6.
I enjoy watching you and your culinary expertise on things like this, but I have an honest question. In a retail setting, most things are priced 3-4x cost. I would love to see a true breakdown, as I would never pay $30-$50 for a sandwich.
My experience with a lot of these things is that if your goal is to be as cheap as possible, it's often cheaper to just buy the ingredients in the store. On my last trip I saw the cheapest white bread at like .79 cents a loaf. HOWEVER, if your goal is to make something GOOD then this is where Joshua's recipe really slams. Just about everything he put in there from the turkey he brined himself to the bread that he baked himself would basically be artisanal and expensive AF to go out and buy on it's own. This really would have been a $12 sandwich.
Been getting so sick of my home made turkey sandwiches lately. I made your Sandwich "glue," buttered and toasted the bread, threw my turkey slices into the pan for a few mins to get some flavor. Then followed your "stacking order" with the onion/tomato/lettuce..... its like a completely different sandwich! Thank you sir!
The aromatics is where I get kicked in the teeth price-wise as I can never JUST buy a sprig of thyme or a couple of bay leaves, it's always sold in packs
Consider growing thyme. It's cheap to get a plant and it's pretty hardy, bay trees are too but they take a long time to grow. Although tbh they will keep and can be put in most things.

SF Bay Area....quite a few places in San Francisco, Marin County, Berkeley, Silicon Valley.
Guess you've never been to Canada
@@metaLungiez Agreed, Im from STL and STL Bread Co (Panera) sells sandwiches for like $5-6 and of course a foot long would cost more because its 3x the size of that dinky sandwich, not to mention you’re typically getting 2-3 kinds of meat and however many veggies

well, i'm pretty sure Josh talks about some good quality juicy sandwiches from a nice street food place or cafe. If his sandwich would be on a menu somewhere it easily would cost from 8 to 12 dollars
if you put some cheese and lettuce together on a toast, it obviously would not cost 12 dollars anywhere in the world
and pizza, well, it's Pizza hut. lol. it's more or less the same price everywhere

I’m gonna be honest, it’s not that hard to make some of his recipes. The more time you put into making your food the better it will come out.

@@GuyIncognit Oh yeah?! Thanks for telling me, will make that next.

Just do it. Here’s a cookie. Now go cook
I made this today. It turned out wonderfully!
Some notes:
I used boneless skinless chicken breast which worked well so even if you can’t find turkey, give it a go!
How much was your total price
I know it wasnt 2$
Same here for the cooking time
I was like 30 minutes lmfo I do need my bird to be dead before I eat it.
Since I’m a sandwich lover, I might need to try this, this looks so good.

"the average sandwich costs $12.00" *laughs in Tesco meals deal*
I do not know he is buying sandwiches. I can buy a sandwich at a gas station for 3 bucks. And a decent subway sub for 5 bucks
But those sandwiches are not nearly as good at Tesco
I enjoy watching you and your culinary expertise on things like this, but I have an honest question. In a retail setting, most things are priced 3-4x cost. I would love to see a true breakdown, as I would never pay $30-$50 for a sandwich.
man I always watch your videos high af and think "I should make this sometime" but this is the first time I think I'm actually gonna try making this
My experience with a lot of these things is that if your goal is to be as cheap as possible, it's often cheaper to just buy the ingredients in the store.
Or a $20 sandwich in Canada, because fuck our wallets apparently.

The aromatics is where I get kicked in the teeth price-wise as I can never JUST buy a sprig of thyme or a couple of bay leaves, it's always sold in packs
Some stores have bulk bins where its just a large bin of spices or bay leaves and u take how much u need and pay based on the weight
Consider growing thyme. It's cheap to get a plant and it's pretty hardy, bay trees are too but they take a long time to grow. Although tbh they will keep and can be put in most things.
