- What qualities does Logan share with classic western characters and stories from movies like Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, Hell or High Water, Shane, and The Revenant? In this video essay analysis of Logan as a film, we'll explore that question.

Logan - No Country for Old Men/Unforgiven
Joker - Taxi Driver/King of Comedy
The Dark Knight - Heat
Logan unforgiven and the shootist
I really hope we never see an X-24 movie. Because I want to believe that that version of Laura was able to live the life that Logan wanted for her in the end.
The saddest part of Xavier and Logan's relationship to me, at least in the movies and to a somewhat lesser extent in the comics as well, is that even Charles used him as a weapon. In the films we're never really shown that he tried to help Logan temper his more bestial nature. It made me sad that his whole life, he was a killing a machine for those around him, even the one man that promised to help him. Remender handled that pretty well in his Uncanny X-Force run I think.
Yeah but let's not make things worse than they need to be, here. It could very well be that Professor X knew Logan more than anybody. Perhaps he knew that he needed some kind of release or outlet. Perhaps the best he could do was aim the loaded revolver that is Wolverine.
Charles never stopped trying to show Logan the good, the calm, the sublime parts of life; to show him what family was, even if they got butchered.. even if up until they very end when it seemed like wolverine had fucking just killed him... he wanted wolverine to never stop trying to get to that sunseeker.
Even if he knew he was doomed, Professor X kept hoping, even for the man that personified rage, he never stopped trying to see the good in him. That's why he was the leader of good mutants.
Apparently Wolverine (with Hugh Jackman) is coming back to play the character again in the next Deadpool movie. I know it won't be the same character really but this is one of those rare cases where I feel like the character and actor ended things in the perfect spot with an amazing arc, and bringing him back again will only tarnish it. I think Ryan Reynolds is smart enough to respect the character and what Logan represents so we will have to wait and see what happens.
Underrated channel, you deserve millions of subs
not more than Pewdiepie tho!
Unlike most of the forgettable superhero movies, Logan will hold the it's perfection over time. I remember that at the theatre I felt sad but happy because Logan completed his journey.
Logan is probably one of the best films made in the last 10 years (up there with all the timeless greats) - if it wasn't a superhero film, the critics would possibly be heralding it too.
I hope it attains classic status in years to come. Great channel BTW!
Yeah, I honestly think Logan was robbed of a lot of the respect it deserved.
Yeah just cause it’s fun they think it degrades the quality. I mean look at The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, it’s fun asl and isn’t a art house movie of anything, and it got all the praise it deserves.
It's definitely a sack of sht or normies who don't know dck about good storytelling
One interesting bit of trivia is that the director wanted to make a Western with his first big movie "Copland" although didn't think he could do that at that point in his career, but still felt he was making something like a Western in a modern setting. He did end up making a Western with 3:10 to Yuma (the remake) but it feels like his best work is in making westerns in modern settings like he did with Logan. I cannot wait to see his future works.
Excellent comparison with Hell or High Water, and another modern western I've loved since I first saw it blind.
keep the good shit going man, Ill be able to say i was here since 3.5K subs
Glad to have you along. More is on the way!
What a great video essay. Keep doing what you're doing man these are so good.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I should be posting some new really soon
This was absolutely excellent. Thank you for your unpretentious yet substantive essay. A good relief on this night too
There’s another western that has a lot in common with Logan, The Shootist with John Wayne. Both involve a protagonist who is dying from an incurable illness who were legendary killers that can still kill but are looking to die in peace but life won’t leave them alone. Now there’s a lot difference between the two in themes, tones, but when I was watching the Shootist I couldn’t help but think of Logan and how both represented the end of a legend going out on his own terms
God bless this channel. It's a shame you don't post anymore
Your quality is writing is exceptional, please never give up at this you deserve so many more views and subs.
I very like it keep going man your content is very good don't let us miss your voice thank you 👍
This was a well done video essay.
Just found your channel, and i must say you have set a high bar! You approach a film review so differently then any other, and you are nailing it.
The child-soldier element of Logan is being repeated in the Picard show hmm.. Ghosts of the past?
Had this in my Watch Later for weeks until I finally rewatched Logan. Worth it. Great vid.
Brilliant analysis and editing. Big thumbs up
Great analysis! Thank you.
I’m new to this channel as of today. Subbed. Completely enthralled with his analysis of Drive and Logan. I’d like to request his thorough approach to a Legends of the The Fall, a criminally underrated film.
You know what Drew? I absolutely adore Legends of the Fall. Great suggestion, and thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
Great analysis! You make me think of the old channel Every Frame a Painting, that really started off film analysis on RUclips. Great channel, you earned a sub and I'm hyped to see you grow in the future.
Wow, that's high praise! Thank you! I hope the channel keeps growing too, and I'm happy to have you along for the ride!
Wonderful video. I can't believe I totally flaked on X-24 being the embodiment of what Logan has been fighting against for most of his life.
I was really happy with how they reflected back on Logan's history so effectively in that way
I entirely agree. Very interested to hear your views on similar matters, hence subbed!
Your vids are sublime mate!
Great essay! Thanks for this
Phenomenal essay! Thanks for this. I don't care for the "The Searchers" reference because other than its visuals its a terrible film, but everything else in your video is superb. "Logan" is truly a remarkable movie. I truly appreciate all your work and insight.
Mad Max Fury Road is another excellent example of the western tropes and stereotypes you speak of
That's the kind of analysis I want to see
Damn, I’m subbin! This video was good! Got damn!
reminds me of my dad. hes alive and was a pro cowboy.
"Don't be what they made you" that shit kills me 😥
Definitely needs more love...
P great video even though you spoiled hell or high water for me
Could we consider Gran Torino By Clint Eastwood to be a subversion of the classic western style? Since he's changed by the end of the movie and no longer reverts to his baser instincts to kill?
damn dis dat good shit
Hommage to Shane was rather briliant, the original antihero movie.
Why do Americans say Exavier, it is Xavier (Zavier) like the Persian king Xerxes (Zerczees)? If you come across a Spaniard called Xavier he does not call himself Exavier.
This movie makes me depressed every time I watch it
No it's garbage
Jackman is an asinine choice for logan.... way too tall and too damn `cute'... he looks like some deluded woman's choice for Logan. Hollywood engineered peoples perception of the west but... all those images, however dear to people, are bullshit.
