It's a crime that Hugh Jackman didn't receive nomination for Logan

The western genre has always been somewhat subversive which is part of what makes it so timeless. Films like The Searchers aimed to deconstruct the genre tropes as early as 1956. Although fewer westerns are made these days, I think this self-awareness has helped it to become such a long-lasting genre.

When making A Fistful of Dollars, Leone did have the idea of reinventing the western genre so there are atypical characteristics to the films. I would say overall though they check off the conventions of the genre

Because of that, when being showed to US audience on TV, For a fistful of dollars was preceded with a prologue filmed without Clint Eastwood in order to make the man with no name a more moral figure, and make the movie fit better in the mold of more classic westerns

    'No country for old men'

I like Malcom Gladwell's explanation that a western is a about a bringing law to a lawless land and a Northern is about law functioning and working properly. It seems like a lot of the examples you gave of Neo-Westerns had strong themes of characters coming to terms with old age which has been a strong theme in Hollywood with many action heroes getting older.
I completely understand No Country For old Men now that I've grown up. I like this definition of a Neo-Western, a character who feels out of place in the world because the world has changed and he hasn't.

Antonio Kranjčević absolutely not in my opinion. I rewatched it a few weeks ago and it’s not as good as I remember. 4/5 at best which is still great but certainly not one of the best.

A western isn't defined by my or anyone's expectations, that's pure baloney. If I walk into a romantic or crazy comedy expecting a western - I'll be disappointed. If you use such phrases, and other grandiose statements - you make everything you say shallow and false. Also, the western hasn't evolved, unless you a modern version of Voltaire's Candide, sprouting, "we live in the best if times". There was the classical western, psychological western, the de-mythologising western. A handful of neo-westerns and the modern devolved scrappy toxic soup such as 'The Mandalorian'.

While I agree with the central premise, this video is problematic. Stating that a displaced hero called to action against their will is a modern trope and that Westerns like "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly" were "quintessentially American" films about "bringing law and order to the West" is very much inaccurate.

Yes, it is. In fact, the subversion of the classic western started with the western spaghetti. Main characters are savages and with no morals, greedy, violent... it's more about the smartest guy will stand.
What neo-western is doing uniquely it is the inability of adapting a new world and creating disconcern characters in a world that they don't know anymore, which brings existencialm to the table

Were you drunk writing this? If not, please explain HOW Westerns are not inherently American and how they are not about bringing about law and order. How the hell else would you classify them? Nearly all Western movie characters are displaced heroes (to some extent). Explain yourself!!
