I like wind river, but in the end it is a lame premise. Some guys working in some camp are murdering people.

Wind River, Hell or High Water, and Sicario are excellent examples of neo westerns. Taylor Sheridan is an amazing writer on those films.
Along with Logan and No Country for Old Men.

I remember watching No Country for Old Men in theaters with some family members over the Thanksgiving weekend. My dad and uncle walked out hating it and their opinions rubbed off on me so I ended up hating it as well. It wasn't until several years later I watched it on my own and thought it was fantastic.

An actual great western can be a neo-western too! Case in point...Sam Raimi's unique take on the western genre with 'The Quick and the Dead' with Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, and Leonardo DeCaprio.

The last thing Wolverine is in Logan is a loner.
    He's basically a caretaker,
Forced to lay low and keep quite because he's actions now affect folks other than himself.

Sicario isn't a western it is an elegy to the deep state.

The problem with Hell or High Water is that it if you have a reliable source of income (in their wells), you should have no problem raising money on that basis to pay your mortgage. So they knew more about bank robberies than finance, still a pretty stupid premise.

I don't see at least 5 of those as westerns. I looked at other lists, and they are almost all incoherent lists of films, I think Bambi was on one of them. It is obvious that nobody has any idea what belongs in this category.
The basic western trajectory is that the civil war was the war whose purpose was to assert federal power over state's rights. The party lasted less than 100 years before the feds grabbed everything. Disaffected southerners or various northerners, who either have war damage, or in some cases play along to keep the action rolling, move, or return to the west. And sort their problems out with tools developed during the war, that briefly gave individuals unusual power. But many westerns hint at the fact that this period will not last long as the west is finite, and these bahaviours will hit a wall soon enough. So a classic ending has the hero run off to some last frontier, or be it Bolivia, or wherever Shane is off to. Or sometimes there is a return to small time life.
Sicario, is a pro federal government wet dream. Even Wind River has a hero who is the guy who determines who can hunt with freedom. More like 007 bureaucrats with the power to kill.

Good list. I saw them all. And I know that movies - like everything else - must evolve...but westerns are a special thing and modern westerns, well...there is no such thing. At least in my opinion!

Broke back should have NEVER made this list! Or any further mentions, EVER!

    • @HalleyBay61

      Why?
I am straight and it had scenes that made me feel somewhat uncomfortable as a straight man.
But the film is made to a very high standard and the acting from all the cast is very good indeed.
Especially Heath Ledger & Jake Gyllenhal.
The whole point of cinematic story making is to push boundaries of society and to get the audience to explore different ideas as well as just good old fashioned entertainment.
I went to the cinema to watch Brokeback because I knew that it was going to be a film worthy of all the universal praise it was getting regardless of the fact that I might be somewhat uncomfortable at times.
I've never watched it again in all fairness, but it is a very well made film for sure.

@@HalleyBay61 Nothing to do with who they love, If Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid was gay, and the only part related to that was the part with the bicycle scenes, no chick, it would still be a great western. Maybe for some better, not just a buddy film western. Tarentino had a bit on why Top Gun 1 was a gay love story. Ends up with "you can ride my tail any time". If I recall. That interpretation doesn't stop it being about aviators at Top Gun. But if they were straight, but porters on a rail line, I think it would have been pushing the idea it was actually an aviation movie.
