    This video just popped up in my news feed 5 years later. Considering the current state of Marvel's phase 4 debacle, It's incredible how beautifully this video has aged. Of course there have been some great superhero movies such as the new batman and Spider-man: No way home, but I can't help but wonder how much fondly we would've looked back on the superhero movie Era if they stopped making films after Endgame.

    I think it probably helped Mangold's vision that Hugh Jackman - a man who personifies a particular superhero more than any actor since Christopher Reeve - was both ageing and willing to make one last hurrah. He would be enormously difficult, if not impossible, to replace in the role - so why not make one last attempt to make a film that captures the essence of the character, rather than a big budget extravaganza that was all mouth and no trousers.

    • @TheAkashicTraveller

      Irn Bru Boy Agreed.
      Jackman approved of and supported this R rated conclusion to his 18 year tenure and I think time will prove Mangold and him correct about how they chose to end his story.

      I hope Marvel respects Jackman's time as Wolverine to not recast him and leave the character alone. Include all the X-Men, recast them if you feel appropriate, but know that Wolverine wasn't a part of the X-Men in the original run of comics for the first 12 years.

      With what's happening with Disney and Fox now, as great as it is, and as great it would be to see if Hugh Jackman keeps the role of the Wolverine in the MCU - it would make Logan mean less, I think.

      @jcd561 5 лет назад +259

      How so? Endgame had an almost obvious finale... We knew they were going to save the day, and we knew some main characters were going to die.
      The genre itself will and is becoming movies with the same plot in substance with better or worse execution. Different story to tales but feeling like we've watched it before.
      But maybe there is hope; For an instance, the Trailer for the Joker movie seems small but meaningful, like if it was not a super hero movie but just a drama with some action. I wish for this movie to do fantastic as I think it may bring a new wave to the super hero genre, that if executed right could make super hero movies worthy of Oscars (although we know those are just a farse). But even then, he same plots will be repeated on substance.
      Lets hope for the best tho, that we can enjoy thrill cinema with the heatoes we love, and the new ones that are to come.

For any of you who are new to this channel please do bare in mind my videos are usually edited to a higher standard than this but I have spent about 8 hours re-editing this thing, re-rendering and re-uploading when usually I only spend about 20 minutes doing that stuff so at this point I just want to move onto my next project.

      The Closer Look Great work mate!

    • @marcusjonesey
      @marcusjonesey 7 лет назад +2

      The Closer Look I would argue a genre can never truly die but a franchise focused on a certain character can because that character will reach such a satisfying or crazy powerful climax that simply cannot be continued due to that level of tension never being surpassed again and all you can do is end the story satisfying the themes of the story and its message the whole way through without contradicting the heart of the piece. This is in essence what is wrong with super hero fiction as it is with Marvel and DC unlike other superhero fiction from other publishers. The popularity of Marvel and DC's characters are so extreme that people only want to see certain characters forever and the fact that their story can never end due to the importance of sales or characters truly change makes the story somehow incomplete. This is a reason I'm really looking forward to how Robert Kirkman and Image's Invincible concludes because that story has themes and arcs that are central the whole way through and always matter, whilst the big two have to keep their greatest characters going forever to a point where it's just ridiculous. Certain characters that have not hit their peak like Nightwing and younger heroes are really interesting because they have so much growth to go, but if their stories never end like their protégé's it will eventually become boring. I have no idea how you can keep writing interesting stories after an event like Secret Wars for Marvel where the multiverse literally collided into one mega planet of craziness before it was reset because it is important for characters to still save the world after this but nothing will ever be that crazy again taking all the tension away. All characters must end at some point it is the only way to finish a satisfying story, which means the main universe stories from the big two will never be truly great stories because without a defective end to a story people will become tired and lose interest. In conclusion a genre can never truly die only a successful story of a character can because stories that follow the same path can be just as interesting as long as new characters and writing is engaging. Just a thought

      Love your work and this video has some valid points.
      I do agree with your point about scale. Especially, because a lot of characters lack adversarial intimacy. Something to thread them together emotionally, if not ideologically where they both have character pros and cons attached to their conflict. The cookie-cutter bombastic scope of final battles have worn thin.

      o please, wolverine existed far before hugh came along, this movie only signified the end of an actor's portrayal of him, which was vastly needed. No character should be blocked from story creation by the image of someone pretending to be that character. That's the problem with movies, in the time it would take to write several effective stories about him, the universe he's in, and an effective true end, they made one movie equivalent to one comic. It explains why there are so many movies and yet you feel like only briefly touching on the world. They could have done so much more with the x-men but the physical problems with making a movie only gave a glimpse into that universe.

    After I watched the first 5 minutes of Logan, this sparked the exact opposite reaction for me. This is the BIRTH of a new superhero genre. Logan's massive critical and box office success proves that audiences crave more intellectual, artistic and mature superhero films. This movie gives me hope that in the future studios and directors will look to get away from PG-13, A.D.D. movie making and create real art with a fantastic theme: fictitious superheroes with real problems in the real world. Hands down the best line of the movie (Logan yelling at Laura): "WILL YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP.".

      i consider it the end of logans story not the xmen...lets be honest logan and charles and to a somewhat equal but still smaller degree magneto were the lynchpins of that entire franchise. The actual XMEN barely did shit all. If it were not for the performances of hugh, patrick, and mckellan, and in the newer ones mcavoy and fassbender the movies would not be nearly as good and tolerable. In fact we can already see the decline in quality with jackman not being present in apocalypse. The best moment of the entire film was only his small cameo and seeing the very small moment of pain and then somewhat calm wash over his face when jean helped him. Say what you want about the story not being the best but you have to agree having wolverine in it would have made it better and that is the point i am making. The actual xmen have not had their chance to shine at all in all these years. Wolverine has had all the glory. His story is now at and end. They just need to now focus on stories during the years in which logan was out wandering the wilds of canada trying to find a purpose in life. The stories need to be really focused on making other xmen stand out and if they do that i see no problem in it continuing. I think it would be a mistake recasting wolverine as talks of that is already happening. I would so not go see that. Let the mans legacy rest a little bit jeeze. Not even a year and talks about maybe eastwood taking over Good God.

      Look at what they are doing with toy story, star wars, and many more to come, remakes and live adapt unecessarily being made for no single reason

      @@vinicinfodexota5083 Agreed. When I view the MCU I can't look too deep into it, because I know there will never be a deeper meaning behind the movie(s) presented. Sure the films are entertaining and fun, but that's all that they provide. I shouldn't expect them to make something more than a generic action/comedy, however I'm still believing that one day that'll happen.
      They have the cast, directors, writers, funding, and much much more, so why can't we get something deeper? Films like Logan, TDK, and even Spider-Man 2 (say what you will about Tobey) all give me everything I want to see and more for this genre and I hope we will get more films like them in the future.

      The problem is that they don't kill off the heroes and leave them dead, they kill them off and then recast them. Peter Parker dies, enter Miles Morales. Tony Stark dies, enter...well I can't remember her name.
      Now, while I haven't read the Miles Spider-Man stories, I've heard they're pretty good. Still, why didn't Miles get to be his own hero with his own name. Why do they feel the need to link him to Spider-Man only to have Peter's shadow loom over everything he does.
      If every comic book had a story arc that resolved like it did in Logan, I would have brought more comic books growing up. Instead, all the characters today were already 50 or more years old when they started recasting them in order for the publishers to show how woke they were. What they should have done is given them a finale like Logan and moved on. Although to be fair, most of these new superhero are complete crap because of the need to put woke activism into everything rather than develop complex and nuanced characters with flaws.

      Ive been saying that for years, over the decade. I was 18-20 when I recognize U.S heroes have stagnated. And I like them. I read up on them ect. The problem with Superhero universes, is that it often creates a hierarchy. And I still consume this media because I like fantasy action hero stories ect. But compare this to Japan and they let stuff go much more. Of course, lately they've really over extended a few action stories. But I think it would be fine if Superman went away for awhile, and came back later. Or maybe he only releases stories a few times a year ect.

    • @alexman378
      @alexman378 7 лет назад +34

      Gemnist It's the same Universe. The X-Men franchise was just a big tragedy and Magneto was right all along. Remember when Beast said in DoFP about time, that if you throw a stone in the river, it will change its course, but eventually it will keep on going? That's exactly what happened. Wolverine changed how the mutants would go extinct, but they did eventually anyway. He goes out trying to save the remaining few of his kind in a last ditch effort to not make all his and the Professor's lives and missions be for nothing.

    • @Gemnist98
      @Gemnist98 7 лет назад +10

      No, it's two. It originally was the Earth-10005 universe, but ever since the end of DoFP, it's been the Earth-TRN414 universe. That said, the Wolverine of Earth-10005 (who was seen in the vision) got his soul transported into the body of the Wolverine of Earth-TRN414, hence the Wolverine of Earth-10005 (the original one) is the one that died in Logan. So yeah, basically DoFP caused the stone to be dropped and "change its course" with two universes.

    I actually think Tony Stark will die by the end of Infinity War. It would make a lot of sense for many reasons. The biggest reason would be that Infinity War has been confirmed as an end of a chapter -- a chapter that began with Tony Stark. Would be fitting to end with him. I think Peter is going to be somewhat responsible for the death. I'm thinking this could be Peter's "Uncle Ben moment". The event that teaches him the harsh lesson of responsibility. He can't just be a reckless kid anymore. Which would be why the Spider-man sequel would be set directly after Infinity War. Just my thoughts, lol.
    Amazing analysis and I agree that superhero movies have to change. I think studios are starting to pick up on this. I know many compare the superhero genre to the western genre. Not sure if I'm just naive here but I think the superhero genre is more timeless compared to the western genre. There's a lot more unique and different stories to tell. The studios just have to be smarter, bolder and more creative with which stories they choose to tell. Been going off for too long now with this comment, lol.

I hope Kevin Feige can see this, and the MCU can take a darker turn. They can't go bigger after they beat someone with actual unlimited power. So they have to go smaller in a smart way.

      The thing is, I wish they did. He implied that the death of iron man to save cap, or in Endgames case, the universe would have been an amazing END. And end is the word to focus on there. Endgame should have been the end. So many movies building up to an amazing climax which left no one wanting too much more. It would have been the perfect note to end it off on. But, it won't end. The MCU will get milked and milked until one day, superhero movies just... stop coming out in cinemas or on streaming services because they are no longer popular, or as he so eloquently put it "go out with a whimper." They won't be able to build it up like they did with endgame again. We loved the characters in the original avengers as we spent years growing and learning about them. Watching their movies. The new cast of heroes is good... but they aren't going to be as dynamic as iron man. As relatable as Captain America. As tragic as Widow. As it was the first time with those characters and those ideas in this world. If they somehow pull it back, I'll happily be wrong and enjoy it... but I think everyone knows I am not wrong here... It doesn't have much time left. It will end eventually. And unfortunately, it seems like it's going to be going out with a tiny depressing whimper... And not the last Hurrah they deserve.
      Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

      @@rocksnrolls I disagree. It's exceedingly rare, but very possible, for a series to go on continually for years upon years while still maintaining it's quality. The manga (and subsequent anime) series One Piece has been running continually for over 20 years with massive acclaim from fans.
      While manga/anime are different from film, I would argue that good enough writers, with the excellent acting performances of MCU's cast backing them up, would be able to pull the cinematic universe through yet another couple of decades.
      As long as they continue to emphasise their characters. Black Panther was virtually a masterpiece in this regard, the writing combined with Boseman's brilliant acting (rest in peace) is testament to how the MCU can still pull off a compelling cast, even in a new generation.

    • @rocksnrolls
      @rocksnrolls 4 года назад

      @@ceciliaxx yes, but it will eventually decline in popularity. And yes, Black Panther was good, not a masterpiece in my opinion, but good. No disrespect to Chadwick Boesman (Rest in peace). The acting was mostly excellent, especially from Chadwick, but the CG and the plot contrivences were a bit much for me. And One Piece and the MCU aren't 1 to 1 analogies. With the MCU, it's controlled by Studio executives who want to make the movie as safe and marketable as possible, but directors want to make movies that maybe the studios would find to risky and out there. And, If One Piece has a bad few episodes, people can forgive a few bad episodes if the rest of the show is good, and they won't loose much money. But with movies, especially ones with such spectacle and star power behind them, if there are a few movies that aren't good, people will loose interest, and if they perform badly, it will loose so much more money, and eventually, if and when this happens, studio executives won't want to make marvel movies, as they will become unprofitable. Because studio executives don't care about stories. They don't care if they upset people. The only thing on their mind is money. Can this movie help me pay for the extension to my house? Can this movie put more money in my pocket. Anime such as one piece, and manga such as Berserk (I know you didn't use this example, but I love this manga, and it's been going on for a very long time also) don't have such studio involvement, and if they do, much less money is at stake so they can afford to take risks and not put the same thing over and over again. And you said it yourself, it's exceedingly rare for a series to go on for ages and still be good. What is much more likely is that it goes the Simpsons (being a much more apt comparison, they are even owned by the same company now) route. Slowly declining in quality and becoming boring for everyone, and people will watch it because there is nothing else on, or they remember loving it before, and don't realise why they stopped watching... until they watch the next movie or episode and realise how far downhill it's gone. Or, the Western. It will eventually become less unprofitable to make them, and the public's interest will be picked up by something else, leaving the MCU to become more of an Old west.
      The mcu was amazing for what it was... but unless they end it soon... it will just be another Simpsons. If it had ended with Endgame, it would have been a beautiful, almost perfect way of ending the MCU. The first in its line up was the birth of a hero. The birth of iron man... it would have been poetically perfect to have Ended it with the death of the same Iron man, would it not?
      It's time for the superhero to go the way of the Western. And hopefully they know when to stop. Because, if they don't. It won't go out on the glorious bang it deserves, but will slowly whimper, and die quietly, barely noticed.

    I do think there's way too many comic book films. I think Logan is the best comic book film since The Dark Knight. I think the MCU & DCEU haven't reached the level of films like The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, Logan, & Superman The Movie. But I don't think the genre will ever die.
    We may see the popularity die down & less films be made but the genre will never fully die. Superman for example has had films, shows, & cartoons made for nearly 80 years & there's still cartoons, films, & shows with him

    Hollywood doesn't have much choice but to either make dumb blockbusters or heavily downsize, because consistently making really good movies is an art that far too few in the industry seem to be capable of accomplishing. Meanwhile, technological change and changing assumptions in competing media have backed Hollywood into a corner. Consider that the game industry now dwarfs the movie industry with more than double the revenue (though the numbers aren't apples-to-apples), while stories like Game of Thrones would be practically impossible to tell in a movie format and are attracting ever larger budgets and audiences. These problems started in the early 90s and have gotten progressively more acute. At that time, a few television writers finally broke through the idea that American audiences were too stupid to follow television programming with long-term story arcs, creating shows like Buffy, X-Files, Twin Peaks, and Babylon 5, and television became a better medium for telling stories about complex plots and characterization than movies were. At about the same time, first-person shooter and 3rd person RPG games emerged as a superior medium for telling stories that were heavily dependent on visceral personal violence than traditional action movies were. The movie industry never faced competition like this before, and yet all corporations face enormous pressure to continuously grow their revenues so they'll only downsize if they have no other choice. While there is still a place for really brilliant stories about character like Logan, and for movies that heavily hinge on personal violence like John Wick, it seems to me that the bar has been raised to the point that Hollywood can't depend on churning out junk in those genres and expecting it to sell anymore - at least in America. Dumb giant blockbusters will continue to be made because they don't benefit from the sprawling storytelling of TV, and can't be rendered in realtime by game engines yet.

    • @thamostgangsta12
      @thamostgangsta12 7 лет назад

      Jeffrey Fisher Look at all the amazing stories through fps and 3rd person games like Resident Evil, Halo, or Metal Gear Solid. When you had shows before the characters lacked a story and everyday it would be something new. The plot would begin and end in the same episode and the characters really had no ulterior motives like the Jefferson's, Full House, Simpson's, etc. When characters actually had stories that followed up it made you want to watch the next episode and they could add more characters or plots that were better than the last. This is why Michael Bay movies like Transformers aren't really perceived well. Movies like Fast and Furious also gained more commercial success when it developed that method too. Who's still gonna be interested in the same joke by Family Guy told already. Characters and actors get older, people change, people mature and go through life.

    • @thamostgangsta12
      @thamostgangsta12 7 лет назад

      On a side note, that first person shit could never work for films. It just seems really cheesy for an older the shoulder or go pro camera style movie. It works for games because the person you play is still a character you see in the game and you actually interact with them. If call of duty was a film it would be a horrible franchise that over-stayed it's welcome

      Sam Samoa what do you mean, Star Wars shaped multiple generations, my father as a kid learned from the lessons that were taught by the movies, and as he grew up so did the series that he loved, with new games and movies and shows, and he passed that love for such a vast, beautiful, sprawling universe to me, if you want adult focus read the books or comics, if you want an in between watch the original trilogy, rouge one or the clone wars, if you want a good laugh watch prequels because everyone knows that they are funny, they are horrible movies and we love them for that, watching a bad movie is better than anything that isn’t amazing, and finally you could watch the family friendly new trilogy or rebels. Star Wars is held dear to so many people, children, teens and adults alike because it is universal, anyone who thinks it only for children needs to watch rouge one or read the Thrawn book, because I would not want a five year old reading or watching that, all of the og trilogy is about family, the fight for what is right, and the growing up of a farm boy to a hero, the reason that so many people love this series is that if you remove the space battles and lightsabers you are left with a hero story that could be from an 18th century play, because it is basic at its core. I know I’m not going to be able to sway your opinion on the series that had shaped who I am through the teachings of a green puppet and a space smuggler with a animal sidekick because you don’t get it, but I hope you don’t keep talking down to the series and those who love it, because if I got really mad at you for saying these things you would probably say “oh it’s my opinion” Well loving Star Wars is my opinion, and I’ll fight to the end on this one

      Sam Samoa Sam Samoa Sam Samoa Sam Samoa Sam Samoa how is enjoying something a waste of time? If it brings me and so many others happiness and fulfillment it is somehow a waste of time? Do you really think preaching your little Children’s tales about a man who walked on water in the comments of a review of Logan is going to do anything? The bible if written today nobody would believe, because there is literally no proof of these godly events, if you show me water into wine or walking on water I’ll believe, but someone like yoda or Han is much more believable in today’s world, and old wise man with old teachings of a time long gone who wants to pass on his knowledge, that happens all the time with stories and teachings of wars and history in general, and his teachings stand in real life. “Do or do not, there is no try” “fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering” isn’t that sound like someone out of the bible? I don’t understand why you keep calling it childish when like I said before if you would pick up a piece of fiction that doesn’t have the blessing of a fake god around it then you would know that it’s not just for kids, the stories of soldiers losing friends and family fighting for their home. Of an evil empire and its firm grasp on all that live under it, you tell me honestly that the movie that opens the series is for children when it opens to a massacre of rebels and the literal choking to death of a good guy? Not everything is about your bible and it’s horrible ways, you don’t know how much fucking pain that thing has caused me, and believing that somehow you are more knowledgeable or mature than the amount of people that 1.6 billion dollars worth of tickets could pay for? Though most of your kind want me dead for existing I have a few Christian friends and none of them share your warped view of things, because they don’t need to prove to themselves that their beliefs are already around too much, but you have to go around berating people that like a series that grew up with my dad, has grown up with me, and I will eventually show to my children, because it teaches much better morals than hating gays and Star Wars, I’m going to stop talking because now I know that I’m not going to effect you or too set in your ways, I feel bad for you really, you were born into these beliefs right? I’m just happy now less and less Children’s the forced into an upbringing like that. If my eyes are shut tightly than I fear whatever you see, because I’m happy here dreaming away, ignoring those that hate and destroy for no reason, and I’d take a green puppet over a fake god who hates who I am any day, I hope you keep deepthroating that cross of yours, maybe you’ll choke on it

      By ended, I assume he means that they don't take up a lot of movie resources, particularly on the Holllywood side. Sure, you can always find a movie to watch from a small genre but how many are being made out of the whole? Basically, in terms of percentages, genres that don't constitute a significant portion of the whole.

      I assume he's referring to a franchise. If he is, they're right.
      Logan was supposed to be the end of the xman franchise we grew up with...and it did just that. Superhero franchises, like many, just can't end. They're always trying to squeeze one more out of it. Trilogies become quadrilogies. Series turn out to be left deliberately open ended in hopes of more.

      @@chobochobus DC comics has plenty of stuff to work with. Great comic books and amazing animated movies... If the cinematographic universe failed, its because of Warner and every single person involved with the DCEU... I mean, who thought it was a good idea to make Superman be an emo? Or make Batman a murderer? Why make them fight each other without any real context right after the first movie? I listed 3 things and you can already see the universe is based on bad decisions. Its DC, its the people in charge of creating the universe that completely failed at doing it.
      Its simple. Disney made Marvel characters work... and Warner couldnt do the same with DC.
      It doesnt take a genius to realize it.

      Nicolas S. not to forget that they actually have some good movies especially the first ones. The whole dark knight trilogy is gold, V for vendetta is amazing so is watchmen but I think DC is trying to analyse Marvel which makes them fail because they don’t have the same story’s. They compare Tony to Bruce and think that making him a rich guy who has some funny stuff to say makes to movie amazing.

      I don't know, man. Phase 4 despite its faults still attracts big numbers. So far, phase 4 collectively gross 4.8 billion so far, besting phase 1 (3.8 billion) and soon will surpass phase 2 (5.2 billion) after black panther wakanda forever. With how well received and emotional the comic con trailer this could have the paul Walker effect after his death during production of furious 7 and bring in an additional billion dollar hit after spider man no way home 1.9 billion!
      Of course. I havent even mentioned the upcoming 2 avengers movies kang dynasty and secret wars having multerversal consequences across all realities of the mcu, can possibly bring in xmen and of course the f4 being the springboard to those upcoming avengers movies will attract audiences similarly to how captain marvel did and we all saw how big that movie was a prelude to endgame

    I'm glad more people are realizing that the superhero genre will not stay the hottest trend in Hollywood as I have heard idiots claim that superheroes will somehow be immune to fatigue, even though you always know superheroes when you see them, even when they try to be different. Ultimately the superhero genre will fade from popularity just like westerns, just like gangster films, just like universal horror films, just like slasher subgenre and so on.

    • @coolkidjay17

      RokaSoka I resepct your opinion but i have to disagree. I think super hero origin movies will be the thing that fades...but the genre itself can be mixed and matched with other genres. Superhero movies can be crime dramas (The Dark Knight), space operas (Guardians of the Galaxy), spy thrillers (CA: The Winter Soldier, or even westerns (Logan). They can fit in different boxes outside of standard action movies.

      +Rados Kovac It is a genre, just like sci-fi is a genre. Sci-fi can be a horror movie (Alien), a crime thriller (Blade Runner), an action comedy (Fifth Element), a war movie (Star Wars), a survival story (Martian), a love story (Her) or a surreal contemplation about the nature of man and the universe (2001: A Space Odyssey). Unfortunately, superhero movies are nowhere near as fluid and versatile. Aside from being tied to licensed IPs and adapted from an art-form dependent on unlimited serialization, the genre severely limits the main characters. At the end of the day, you'll always get two larger-than-life enemies punching each other in the face over some kind of threat to the public.

      Most of those are good movies but back in the day they were a much bigger thing. A Western coming out back then was equivalent to a superhero movie coming out now, box office hits with tons of people going in to view them and everybody talking about them. Death of a genre doesn't mean that there are no more movies being made, it just means they're no longer a big thing.
      All of those Westerns that you mentioned are probably some of the only memorable Western movies I can remember coming out in the past few years. I can probably recall twice as many memorable superhero movies that came out these past few years.

      Captain Blocky that was pretty minor considering he died in the same movie he was introduced in, especially considering the enormous cast of superheroes in the franchise.
      All the characters "killed" in infinity war will be back, except Loki (probably). They're all in the soul stone. There's really no suspense or real weight to any of their deaths.
      I think there probably will be a few, more permanent, deaths in the second infinity war movie, and I think, unlike the maker of this particular video, that Stark will be one of them. And if he doesnt die, he might just "walk off into the sunset". I remember hearing/reading something about RDJ being ready to finish his role of Iron Man.

    Logan has a pretty hopeful message about the importance of superheroes and comic books. After all, Laura is literally saved by her faith in comic books.
    Logan talks about how the comics are made up fantasies. But Laura lives in a terrible reality where she was created to be a weapon and treated like property all her life. She needed those comics to give her hope and teach her about humanity. And in the end, Logan does become a superhero one last time to save his daughter, proving to her that there was truth to all those comic books.
