Why Necessary Evil Is So Damn Necessary To A Story

- It’s utterly impossible for a hero to come to life on their own because a story forces them to entirely rely on another character to exist at all: The Opponent. In this video essay, we’re going to use David Fincher's film Fight Club and Tyler Durden as a workspace to analyze the Opponent’s utterly crucial role in a story.
“Every road to evil is paved with good intentions”, I love when movies incorporate this philosophy into their villains, because it gives us a sense of understanding, but, at the same time, it gives us a purpose as to why they are evil.
I wanted to scream "Yes, exactly!" So many times in this video.
I'm very glad that the video struck a chord for you! Hopefully you'll continue to enjoy the others that are upcoming
@@ShaneBertram absolutely. Thanks for making this. Truely.
This channel is such a source, one I return to and rewatch them all.
I hope you're busy with writing or whatever your passion may be
I miss his story telling
he just disappeared
This entire channel is a hidden gem. I'm only on my second video and I'm obsessed. Keep up the good work, man.
I'm so glad you found the channel, MJ! Thanks for taking the time to leave such a kind comment, and I hope you keep enjoying my videos!
Altough Fight Club bombed at the box office, Fincher's cinematic language left a mark that can still be felt now, 20 years later, on many current releases. Despite the risky 'cutting edge' nature of the film, Fincher got a huge budget for this and it shows: the camera effects and the whole production design are amazing. This movie has a raw energy that grips me every time I watch it. What a crazy, fun ride! Whether it is a very clever satire or pure testosterone going on a rampage - both are fine by me. A film so visually stunning and sexy, with career best performances by all involved - welcome to movie heaven. The first rule of Fight Club is...
Fantastic . Now I want to watch it again for the upteenth time
Fight Club has been a favorite of mine for many years! Really just David Fincher period
This reminds me of why Star Wars often doesn't work for me, the villains have willingly chosen something literally called the Dark Side. They've chosen to be evil and they know it. It would be much more effective if Jedi and Sith were just living by different interpretations of the same scripture or something nuanced like that.
I think that's an apt observation! There isn't always a lot of nuance in the sith, or their conflict with the jedi
I grew up on Star Wars, loved it as a kid. But you're right, it fails as adult storytelling.
I think a big part of that is due to the fact Star Wars was made for 'kids'
@@TheChowHall I would argue not children but families, a similar but different demographic. Another example from roughly the same time is Star Trek TNG, it's not specifically for kids but it was a show that could be enjoyed by every member of the family, parents and children alike, it had something for everyone. And TNG shows us a very morally complex world. And even if something is aimed at kids exclusively, it can still be morally complex, look at Avatar the Last Airbender or Steven Universe, which in turn did attract older audiences.
that is literally the opposite. Ankin wanted to bring his mum back from the dead but the Jedi;s wouldn;t allow it, so he considered them to be evil.
"I am Jack's complete lack of surprise"
Found this hidden gem of a channel and all the videos are so well constructed. Hope he returns someday but dam this channel is quality .
Shane can you please start making videos again. You are so wise and eyes opening. Because of you i started to think more about my life. You are the best.
Great content as always Shane 👍🏻
Hey, thanks for taking the time to watch it! Very glad you enjoyed
More views are definitely deserved. Excellent work.
Thanks for the kind words! The more people I'm able to share things with, the better!
You're a hidden gem of RUclips. You sir are a very talented man and can break down a story to its core and minute components in order to analyze it in a very good manner.
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a kind comment! I hope my videos continue to be something you can enjoy!
@@ShaneBertram I will be a regular viewer from now on quality content is hard to find these days
The more time passes by the more Fight Club is relevant. What a World we live in boys and girls, what a World.
I just found this channel and saw that the last video was a bit over two years ago. There's a lot if great content on this channel. Shane, think about considering making another video again soon.
fantastic analysis. really loving this channel
It reminded me of the true evil I once faced named P. Leonard. We wanted the same goal but completely different outcomes. Lucky I had a brilliant sidekick for most of the battle.
God damn dude, another banger... you deserve so many more views. I'm glad at least your sub count has gone up, hopefully the views will follow. o7
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! Really glad you enjoyed it. I certainly hope the channel will continue to grow!
I glad this came up on my FYP. Hope you make some new content.
The one dislike is from Tyler durden as a rebellion.
I enjoyed that a lot! Thanks!
This is great. Where did you learn about “the anatomy of story” from?
I first heard of The Anatomy of Story from the channel "Lessons from the Screenplay" a while ago, and recently started reading through and digesting it myself!
Thank you so much for your Videos ! I love everything about them. From the topics to the well written insight you give us to the editing ! More people definitly need to see this. Have a new Sub from me for your great work
I'm very glad to have you! And that you've been enjoying my videos! More to come!

You're absolutely right in seeing the symbolic importance of him shooting himself.
The hero's story is often one of overcoming oneself, as you've pointed out, and this represents the peak of that story.
If you read Campbell's "The Hero's Journey" and thereby Jung, it's a manifestation of the cycle of death and rebirth that occurs in overcoming ones self.
In order for you to break past your previous limits, you have to let a part of yourself die, so that you can grow.
If you look into it, you can see this kind of symbolism across many different stories and, well, symbols.
Jesus and his resurrection,
The Hindu concept of Samsara,
the alchemical idea represented by the snake eating its tail, Ouroboros,
and many more.
Hey man, I hope your doing ok. If you ever make another video, I cant wait to watch it.
Handsome Jack from borderlands 2 was following the same ideas. And this is why he is beloved by everyone, and called one of the best video games villain ever.
The problem is many mistook the character of Tyler as the hero, very usual in Fincher films. Great video, thanx!!
Amazing content. I like your style.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much for making amazing content I hope you are doing something great in your life
Great video. I wish they still make such amazing movies as they did back in the day. They wasted the potential of so many great actors, especially Brad who could have played so many deep meaningful movies.
Real good as every other episodes. This channel has a bright future ahead
Thanks so much! One can certainly hope!
Just found this channel, and wow. Truly fantastic work. Good luck on your current endeavors. I will be here if you ever return to RUclips.
Amazingly well executed video just subbed 😎
Great analysis. I also believe that the Narrator's line, "My eyes are open.", was him telling Tyler that he can't escape. Throughout the beginning of the movie there are quick frames where you can see Tyler for a split second, if you blink you'll literally miss it. I believe that the Narrator knew that if he were to look away or even just blink then Tyler could have vanished back into his subconscious. So the only way he could successfully kill Tyler was to do it with his eyes never breaking sight of him.
That's a really interesting idea, about there being a more literal meaning to the Narrator's line! Thanks for sharing it!
Wow im so supprised this has such a little amount of views. You are fantastic and seem to hit everything right on the spot with these videos. You definitly deserver way more views and subscribers, keep it up!
I'm so glad you've been enjoying the videos! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, especially such a kind one! I hope the channel keeps growing too. The more the merrier!
Damn, spot on. And this real life we are all living in is full of people with disconnected ideas! She was the one I wanted to lose so bad, more than any Cartel character, definitely the Villain.
Nice video man and ur voice too
I love that you have called Tyler "an opponent" and you have accepted that Tyler wasn't wrong 100% (or even 50%). I've seen couple of videos about Fight Club on RUclips where authors of the videos call Tyler a villain. They call Tyler's actions "toxic masculinity" and try to explain that narrator shooting himself is an act of getting rid of his "toxic masculinity" and EVERY (yes 100%) principle that Tyler has set up during the movie. Which in my opinion is complete bonkers
You are amazing and hit the nail on the head thanks!!!!
You're very kind! I'm glad you enjoyed the video
Do you have any other socials? My hubby loves your videos and we can't get enough.
I cannot believe how much you sound like nerdwriter! Great impression

Can’t find anything about him online it’s like he just decided it wasn’t his thing anymore, shame because these videos are some of the most thought provoking yet concise pieces of movie analysis you’ll find on RUclips

I miss your videos :/
Shame. Maybe if we keep commenting he’ll come back😂
@@Rat-czar he just went out for milk…he’ll be back
fascinating!
Make more videos man
You should also acknowledge what an amazing job the screen play writers did and how magestic this movie is -- considering the source material is ever-so-slightly less well conceived than the cinematic version.
This is like Jung's idea of the integration of the shadow
Hey. You still making these? I just subbed
Thank you for subbing! Yes! This past year has just been really nuts for me (probably for most of us in the world!) but I will definitely be coming back to regularly releasing videos, hopefully sometime soon.
@@ShaneBertram hope some new ones soon
I was born knowing the Twist in Fight club and Star Wars
Life is unfair
Lately I have been reflecting on the nature of necessary evil in Games of Thrones.
I think the necessary evil was represent by the Night King (he was created by the childrens of the forest to protect the trees but it turn out excessif).
Facing him we have the 3 eyes raven which we know very little about his motivation except what Bran said that he his knowledge. We later discover than Bran lies about his true motivation.
In that case, we have the necessary evil that his defeated by the 3 eyes raven who his worst than the Night King in my opinion. It's a force only feed his ego to do it it sacrifice the good in others (Theon, Meera, Jon)
Comsidering how it ended, we have witness a trinity of evilness: Bran the broken, the Night King and Daenarys. I think the show depicted a very bleak ending that prievously destroy some caracters that were good despite being condamn as evil by the viewers: Cersei, Baelish and Olly.
Anyone know what happened to Shane? Seems like such a loss after watching all of his videos over the past few weeks. Just feels like something interrupted his life. This video itself feels like it’s hiding some clues as to why Shane stopped making videos…
The one thing you being up here, different to others, is the nature of the antagonist. Because they are the same person, so long as it is empowering, when, even in this case, it is. The dilemma is antagonitsts aren't usually the same person, which begs looking into frameworks where these connections are empowering, which they usually aren't.Why? Money. Usury. If we thought outside the usury b bubble, such conflicts would always be empowering. I wish I could make a film on that.
What happened to this guy? I liked his videos
5:12-5:30 A good opponent example can be Joker and Batman they both have a goal of bringing for Batman order and Joker bringing the chaos to gotham. Complete polar opposites but delving deeper into the characters psyche and continuatuon of many verisons of them. They always seem to be bounded each other like glue due to the fact that the Joker wants to prove batman his philosophy of no killing and vigilanteism is nothing but an excuse to be what Joker presumes anyone and anybody can be like him given a bad day. Hell there are times when they both reverse roles carrying the exact same philosphy on their traditional counterparts.
Great 💙
Thank you!
This also happens in life somehow without our enemies life would be boring
come back! :)
I wonder if shane is doing videos somewhere else
