My wife solders parts for the government and she always gives me a hard time. She has brought me aot of nice products that she uses at work. Like the solder, flux, thinning cans, brass wool stuff all has expiration dates lol. So when it goes out she will bring it to me. The solder I use is super tiny. I'm not even sure what diameter it is. Maybe a few human hairs wide? Lol but she solders some parts looking through a microscope! This looks like a super nice kit though!
Dude..... You're the man. I have watched countless soldering videos and not one has given me any information. This is by FAR the best soldering video ever. THANK YOU!!!! Signed: The guy with a horseshoe shaped chisel tip. 🤦🏼♂️
@@HolmesHobbies Definitely the screwdriver techniques. 😂 Seriously though, the info on the various fluxes was amazing, as was the info on tinning and why I've always wound up with trashed tips. Plus, I now know exactly what I did wrong years ago on my Vaterra Halix and why, right on schedule with what you said, all the connections went to hell on both my battery and ESC leads. Acid flux. Absolutely exactly as you said. Lol. I love that kit and am very strongly considering picking it up. The only part I wasn't in love with was the crappy-crap Helping Hands unit. There are so many better options out there, that baby would be in the trash without even being unboxed. Lol. Also loved the info on the various types of solder, using a little fresh solder for thermal transfer, the existence of the solder sucker, and really the entire video. Much and many thanks, man. Much and many.
Great video I’m just getting into a first soldering project on my trx-4. When I worked on transport trucks we would mix baking soda and water and dip the corroded wire in it then it comes clean with a wire brush fairly easy. Quick tip for your truck cable ya did, thought I’d pass on! ✌️
I thought I was the worst solder guy ever. Ha. I'm a sheetmetal worker by trade and solder the ends on standing seam copper roofing. So I got a hold of big jar of flux paste. And yes it has acid in it. I've got a 930°f solder iron and half the time my joints look like hell. So I have some good solder juice now and I feel like a pro. Thank my brother.
Honestly I don’t find changing temps on my Hakko that bad. Had mine for 4 years and it’s mostly used for heavy solder jobs. Not ver often do I change the temp from about 825. That fan does look interesting and I may have to grab one. Thanks for another entertaining yet educational vid sir
Great review John I have a Aoyue 939D+ and I enjoy soldering with this set up I paid like $45 for the staion, the temp change is pretty fast tho I'm mostly around 380° really like the bigger chisel tip, yes I've been face assulted by flying solder saftey glasses are a must 😎👍
NEVER solder without shoes on . I had solder drip off a part and it hit my socks and went straight through the sock and stuck on my foot It hurt like hell. Never had it in the face though.
Nice equipment, thank you for the info. I prefer the pinchiedoo. Terrance head cracked me up. On a more serious note I have had meta shards in my eye. That was scary as hell when they took what looked like a dremel to my eye while I looked straight at it. Definitely WEAR YOUR SAFETY GLASSES.
I don't know what flux I used, but i always used solid solder to prevent that degradation. never has issues. all my stuff, except the soldering iron, were form radio shack. Yup cheap stuff, but used right I never had an issue with lack of tinning or cold joints. I learned how to solder from some old slot car gurus and the tips apply to everything I've ever soldered Never had solder flicked into my face, but had it flick over the edge of the table and hit my bare feet, also not recommended
When I was taught soldering in the USAF, they never told us about not putting solder to the tip. I recently killed the tip on my Trak Power 950. At least now I won't do it again. I've been using those Helping Hands for decades. But I get them from Big Lots for $4.
Hello Holmes! Just found your channel and im excited to learn. My son and I are just getting into the RC world, so being "Noobs" ( as my boy calls it) where are researching all we can. Looking forward to your content! Thanks bro
I came from FPV Drones to Crawler and since i have a TS100 for my Drones i never used any Base again. It has a Display in the Handle and i can use it everywhere with a 4 or 6s Lipo ;) Give it a try^^
honestly, I use a $20 amazon iron that's quite crappy. But it works. Jigs and helping hands are what are really important. Pre tin ing the connector and leads... I've used it to remove 6.5mm bullets and put on 4mm ones, and have also had to put fresh 6.5 bullets on a motor that came without connectors (looking at you TP Power!). If I soldered more than three times a year, then I'd invest into something that could maintain heat better... but it's never let me down per se.
Do you do any FPV soldering ? O_O I had to get magnifying glass with light to see what i'm doing. then I tried using that tiny pointed tip you use for flight controllers to solder one of your motors.... 3 hours later... the right tip for the job is everything. don't be afraid to get a good look at your results, iphone camera or magnifying glass... good stuff, thanks for sharing. ohh I should get one of those smoke eaters... I use my house fan aim it my direction... but that is kinda annoying
Ok Mr. Holmes, I have an element front runner 4 runner that I bought for my son for xmas. I purchased 3 of your motors after reading that the smaller the turn the faster the rc goes. So I figured I would buy the Crawl master sport 550 8T. the 13T and the trail master 550 21T. well none of them made the 4 runner any faster. Can you steer me towards what gearing i need to be about as fast as my Trax bronco 2021 plz. not looking for speed demon just enough to be "fun" when he wants. lol
Ehhh, not as low as it could be for the work but also not so hot the tip gets immediately screwed up. 300 to 400 is where I normally work with lead free.
@@HolmesHobbies right.. the brass sponge cleans the tip.. but i see you putting solder on the tip to also referring to "tin" that is essentially cleaning the tip also? sorry man my brain is one of those special ones.
I have had an aoyue for about 5 years or so now. It is a great iron heats up fast and I had found a chart to references for each setting and it's relative temperature. The only draw back is it did come with a corrosion sponge to clean the tip...... May be time to order new tips and some of that tinning prep
I got a $30 soldering pen doesn't have that big old station nothing you got to carry around you just plug it in and you're good to go and it has over 60 watts of power I can go up to 460 degrees
I'm a left handed pool player and I hold it depending on where the que ball is sitting. I don't mind if anyone uses my pool stick but most people don't because it's a short stick muahahaha
Thats why gun has crater lol, I thought supposed tin tip of the gun each time we solder , ahh using cheap standard solder gun cant even change the tips
Metcal or OKI, get tips that can handle 700, buy once for life, this is a rtr solder iron, works well enough to do the job. I wont use it to solder up my premium Holmes Hobbies motors!!!
Solder? No, I twist the wires, spit on them, and then spray them with plastidip so they don't short. Don't even need to plug in the batteries! My stuff runs on hopes and dreams!

"Let's see how loud it is", followed by a concerned face, from the man that brought us the whining outrunner revolver motors. :)
I love soldering, done it all my life for a job, it's still very satisfying watching a very old blob of solder come back to life.

I've used their analog version forever. I'm on my third one. You've just convinced me to redirect my choice a bit higher.
Just call it Oi , that name is hard to process I kept mumbling it every time you did and I just came to the conclusion that Oi seems perfect! 😂😂😂

I didn't flick any solder in my face but I did have a close call where the helping hand let go. But I definitely wear glasses now!
Couldn't agree more on the soldering iron & the helping hands.
Glad you made it safely into work.
Thanks for the review. Yes would like to see the review of the budget for us occasional builders.

Already shot the vid, lol! It's a nice iron for small work but was sorely underpowered for doing motor wires.
This certainly looks like the setup I need. The only thing that I own is a Weller 25 watt iron. 😢
Your trying buddy, thats what matters. Like he said on preheating, it can help alot when your running underpowered. We all have
@holmeshobbies great video, unrelated? What is the rig 2 to the left of the Wraith1.9?

have you seen the micro hot tweezers for SMD components that goes with this station? i would love a review of it if you could..

Sweet setup....but the most useful tool is the M3 hex screwdriver ;)
Is 376C low temp? That is 708.8F. I appreciate the soldering tips and have some new wishlist items, thanks!

Love my Hakko 888. Hate when the solder flings off and falls into my sock 😢 lol
Thanks for the video
Use a southern accent and it will sound like "I-owe-you" XD
Offfff course John F'n Holmes has a monster driver for screwin'
I gotta have one
The wire on the "wand"/tip/whatever doesn't look like the nice flexible silicon wire.
The link doesn't work for sra kit. It goes to there website but says page not found
This one work? bit.ly/3esOT0k
i get confused when you say tinning.. it made sense when you mentioned solder but how does the brass cleanser tin your tip?
Solder gets built up on it and it keeps the tip tinned better than a sponge
@@HolmesHobbies right.. the brass sponge cleans the tip.. but i see you putting solder on the tip to also referring to "tin" that is essentially cleaning the tip also? sorry man my brain is one of those special ones.
So I was just trying to order soldering rosin Flux online and this pops up 😳
The 2mm hex driver.
getting one soon.... do you happen to have a discount code ?.... that would be sweet.
They created a product bundle for us! sra-solder.com/rc-vehicle-soldering-kit?affiliate_code=F0En957ZXa&referring_service=link
looks like the bundle knocks 10 to 15% off the items, thats nice!
Who won the motor?

First? For the algorithm of course

What's the total cost of all the supplies on the bench?
Alot lol.
Around $210 for everything shown in the video.
Not bad , get all at once be done.
@@SRASolderLab not bad for what was shown. Recently lost my solding station and I am in need of a new set up.

Those helping hands are absolute garbage. Horrible to adjust and balance. Just spend the extra money for the magnetic base style all over Amazon.
