The effect on Keith’s guitar is mesmerizing.
I think it’s jaggers most soulful vocal performance. And that groove is killer. Bill’s bass
the concept of the album as a whole was to shine light on american music, each side of the album contains a different sound of black american music, and american culture in general. so the album cover was a collage of different performers throughout the US.
Thanks. Exile has been this 63 year olds most listened to album. But your comment shows why - the album is really a tribute to all forms of American music, from gospel to blues to jazz to rock.
Prod.: Right on.
American blues are The Stones
springboard.
@User2718218 Your words mean so much more than the usual:
*” The greatest rock album of all time”
*” The Mick Taylor years, wow yeah”
*” The Stones are the best”
*” I was so drugged out when hearing this for the first time in 1972, youknow”
Exile indeed is pure Americana by a British band on the run. Description on their own RS website is extensive, meticulously annotated, and marvelous. I would recommend that to all of you who have nothing more to say than yeah yeah yeah.
Best song from the best record of the best band...
This is a song to vent to. It’s meant to accompany you in a sorrowful moment, to help you let loose the tears that need to come out.
Lyrically is not easy to form a fully coherent story, but it’s essentially about venting and tending to a broken heart.
I just read the lyrics on your clip for the first time after listening to the song for 50 years. All this time I couldn't make out half the lyrics. But the feeing is there. The overriding theme of this amazing album is desperation. And you can feel the desperation in the lyrics and in the vocal delivery. A truly amazing song and that (presumably) haunting guitar sound is amazing and memorable. You did a great honest review and you echoed my feelings for five decades.
One of the best songs ever.
This is my favorite rolling stones tune... it reminds me of my young man days looking for love
I never even bothered to learn the lyrics or meaning of this song, as the music just captivates my soul. I stop whatever I’m doing whenever I hear it playing. It’s hypnotic.
Don't get lost in the weeds. It's only rock and roll.
It's about how they make you feel. Very atmospheric.
This was stones stab at gospel music which think they pulled it off. one of my favs
Great track from a great record. The Stones were at their peak during this period. Another fabulous song on this great album is Torn & Frayed.
This song hits different late at night when you’re all alone.
Excellent. Epic LP
Yes it is!
You should react to a few more songs from "Exile On Main St."! Songs like 'Rocks Off', 'All Down the Line', and 'Stop Breaking Down' are perfect songs to listen too.
Fun fact: In 1972, the Stones were literally exiled from UK for "tax exile" and got screwed over by record label ABKCO, thus fleeing to the country of France where they recorded half of the albums music in the city of Nellcôte. The album is very diverse in some genres of music from Rock, Blues, Country, Jazz, some Psychedelia music and Gospel. Although it received mixed reviews at it's time, "Exile..." would be voted at 14th of the 500 Greatest Album's of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine! It's also my favorite album of theirs so I hope you check it out!
Awh, thanks. Those first 2 songs - Rocks Off and Rip This Joint - set the tone and let you settle into the rest of the album. To me, it's The Mona Lisa of albums.
Another great great example of funky Stones music. Great request. Love the piano in to his track. JJ you are deep to the point where you seek to know what the songs meaning is. I remember always looking in the album jacket for lyrics(pre internet times) and the greatest not was singing along with the record. 🎶🎧🎶
I love the Soulful Piano on it too John and the background vocals. Also Mick's vocalz had alot of passion in it.
@@musicman9914 I agree.
Shine A Light has a similar vibe, off the same album. Worth checking out x
Life is a riddle, Stones , Beatles ?
Crazy LP - " Jammin' With Edward" .
Very nice to see a young cat listening to this. If you get a chance, listen to "Ventilator Blues" on the same side, and "Shine A Light" on Side 4. All songs a great mix of Gospel and The Blues.
The late great Nicky Hopkins on keys, bit of a muddy mix but Exile was known for that.
Wow, great selection! The song doesn't pertain to anything per Jagger. However, it's such an emotional and honest vocal that the words don't even matter. Also, Nicky Hopkins is on piano and mellotron, and one can hear Dr. John’s gravelly bayou drawl in the backing vocals. The album Exile on Main St. is the Stones’ fervent journey through deep Americana, undertaking blues, folk, country, soul, gospel, rock-and-roll; you name it. “Let it Loose” is one of their more intense forays into soul and gospel.
Dig how you honestly dug this dude. Thank you.
Stones music steeped in Blues.
Best album ever
cool, offbeat choice, JJ. nice. can't go wrong with this album.
I love this album so much.
@@berkeleygirllaserbeam It's one of those desert-island albums that seemingly never gets old despite having listened to it repeatedly. Gram Parsons was always trying to achieve what he defined as “cosmic American music,” a fusion of soul, gospel, country, folk, and rock, but the Stones do it profoundly better.
@@berkeleygirllaserbeam Me too! Excellent album from beginning to end!!
@@musicman9914 Loving cup next. The alternate version!!
doesn't matter if you know exactly what Mick Jagger and Keith RIchards were thinking when they wrote it - if they even knew or can remember now - it is the sheer sonic majesty of the song, Mick's brilliant vocals all the harmonizing with the back up vocals combined with the ever swelling building instrumentation that is the important thing...
It might be almost best to consider the overall mood and the layers of murky grunge to be the meaning of the song. Certainly the sound is at least as important as the lyrics.
Exile on Main Street is among the greatest rock albums of all time. There are several individual songs that are exceptional that I would have chosen to react to ahead of this one. Rocks Off, Tumbling Dice, Sweet Virginia, Loving Cup, Happy, Stop Breaking Down and All Down the Line are individual songs I would pick before this one. But Exile is worth reacting to as a whole concept album. It has influenced so many rock artists since. A total classic album.
You got that right. The Stone's pounded out 4 great albums starting with Beggars Banquet and ending with Exile. All of them unique, but Exile was (to me) the culmination of the unique blend of so many types of music.
great
Voices & pianny.
I never listen to the lyrics. Its strange that some folks need to know the meaning of a song. I'm more into the feel of the song. Plus many rock songs have abstract lyrics. Robert Hunter, for example, never explained the meaning of his lyrics. He let the listener decide what it means.
I have everything the Stones have put out. 47 albums. I love them. I never understood why this album is such a favorite with fans. I don't care much for or this song. I'd recommend Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker).
It’s their best album lol
@@nickfanzo Best? For flying like a Frisbee? For melting into an ashtray? For torturing Al Kida? The music's not what I like to listen to. Fine if you like it.
@@debjorgo yeah… it’s their best record.
@debjorgo This tapestry of Americana crafted by virtuoso musicians? Every vocal intonation, every lyric, every note, every chord, every song structure, and even the mix creates this incredible, timeless, murky atmosphere. This album is a total master work of rock and roll, blues, soul, gospel, country. It is a culmination of everything this band had been about from the beginning. Total reverence for the lineage of everything that inspired them musically. You can say that it's not your cup of tea or whatever, but to dismiss it as shit that deserves to be destroyed is so out of touch. And then to pit it against something that's so obviously the band just going through the motions like "Heartbreaker" is insane. Goat's Head Soup has its high points, I like that song, but that album was obviously emblematic of the band running out of steam after a string of truly incredible albums that represented a major artistic leap from a band that didn't fully understand what they were about for most of the 60s. Exile is not just a fan favorite, it's their most critically lauded album. For a reason.
@@double-cheesemcqueeze6315 No one "dismissed it as shit". I had a little fun with the word "best" but al kida you not, I did not say it should be destroyed. "a band that didn't fully understand what they were about"; that's funny. I think that indicates your opinion didn't jive with theirs. Goats Head Soup was a complete dive into the '70s glam, shock, moody Rock of the times and was a great precursor to, what I think is their best album, Some Girls.
