  • Last night, I saw the Stones 2nd show at Metlife Stadium on their current Hackney Diamonds Tour. It was a historic show for this tour, as it featured four debut appearances, including my song vote Heartbreaker. Here's my in depth review as well as some of the merch I bought.

I was there, I am 24 and it was my 5th Stones show. Ive seen over 50 rock concerts and there is no one like the Stones. In 2019 I went to both nights and left there mesmerized. They were outstanding, Keith and Ronnie in the pocket on every song. I got to hear the soundcheck in the parking lot, so hearing 'Bitch, Heartbreaker, Whole Wide World, and Midnight Rambler,' I knew we were in for a treat. Whole Wide World is my favorite song off Hackney Diamonds so when I saw they were rotating this with Mess it Up, made me happy I was going to hear it. Keiths two songs are always great, Tell Me Straight was a nice surprise. Little T&A is a fun one to. Im a huge fan of Midnight Rambler, especially that middle part where they slow it down. I bought the hat in the parking lot for $10. The Stones are the best shows I've ever seen.

Thanks so much for your amazing comments. Especially fantastic coming from a relatively newer and younger fan. So awesome. Impressive you’ve already seen them five times. That’s impressive. I’m jealous of the hat. Damn we’re so expensive at the show. Keep rocking with the stones.

Thanks for writing - so you also had the sound issues - and you were on the floor - Pit B. That's surprising too. Seems like they're having sound issues on this tour. Figure that would've solved them by now, right? Very strange. Maybe they just are using a bad sound system. Thanks for letting us know.

I was blown away by the set list after seeing all the previous ones. 4 new songs! Sound was loud but clear in section 111C. Only sat for two songs. Everyone so into it. Wow! My highlight was Midnight Rambler from MY favorite album. Sticky is my number 2. Gimme shelter is my favorite song but I’m still not sure about the female vocal. Sympathy was my other highlight. I also loved Heartbreaker. Hadn’t heard it live since the Goats Head Soup.
There are some good videos from the show!

Yea - Larry, I've now seen some of the videos from floor level- and yea location location location - the sound down there sounds completely different. Rambler there sounds great. Even Paint It Black sounds completely different from what I heard where I was sitting, and apparently in the 200's as well.

It was a great show last night. They were on fire. That's the 20th time I've seen them. I was down in section 121 and the sound there was good. Stadium sound is always tricky. Funny thing on the shirt you bought. I waited for traffic to go down so it was late. I did pick one up for only $10. I did spend a small fortune on merchandise inside because I had my family with me too.

thanks - was such a pleasant surprise. The merch stands were selling everything like crazy - most stuff was sold out. Programs sold out - shirts in my size sold out. Then after the show found a stand near parking lot - had 3 programs left. Got that. And like you in parking lot - bootlegger selling shirts - bought 2 for 30 - $10 NICE job. Actually like the shirt better than the official shirt.

Having been at the same Rolling Stones concert as you (the second night at MetLife Stadium), I can attest to the accuracy of your review. Mick was incredible - vocally, physically and charismatically. Keith was “pretty much” in great form. Ronnie’s lead guitar work seemed much improved from what it sounded like on RUclips footage of previous tour dates. The other six musicians and the two backing vocalists all knocked it out of the park, assuming that the sound issues had nothing to do with Darryl Jones or Steve Jordan. From my concert seat in the 200s section, on the left side of the stage, facing the middle of the catwalk, the sound was inconsistent throughout much of the two-hour concert. It ranged from fine to boxy to fuzzy to muddy. My guess is that the bad to sometimes awful sound (most noticeably on “Honky Tonk Women,” “Midnight Rambler” and “Paint It Black”) was the result of terrible sound mixing. It’s hard for me to understand why - with today’s advanced audio technology and all the money The Stones have generated for more than six decades - the sound was so problematic. I’ve seen
The Stones at MetLife Stadium several times before and never encountered a sound problem. Naturally, stadiums don’t have good acoustics. But, downright awful is a whole other thing. Fortunately, for us concertgoers, the sound quality fluctuated enough so that the majority of songs came across really well. Even on the few that were marred by sound issues, audience members stayed on fire as much as the band, from the beginning of “Start Me Up” to the end of (“I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” A Rolling Stones concert is one of the most fun places you can be, if you like to dance and sing (every line of a song, not just the chorus!) together with nearly 80,000 people sharing two hours of bliss with you. And it doesn’t matter if you’re directly in front of the stage or in the last row of the stadium at a Stones show. The great vibes and high energy are contagious. I think we were lucky to be at the particular show we attended, notwithstanding the bouts of bad sound because of the setlist. We got two songs off of “Sticky Fingers:” “Bitch,” which would have been so much better if it hadn’t got caught in the bad sound trap, and a magnificent performance (the best of the night, IMHO) of “Wild Horses,” a favorite song of mine. We got an additional song from “Hackney Diamonds,” “Tell Me Straight.” While I like that song on the record, I was of the opinion that it would get lost if heard in a stadium. Happily, my opinion was unfounded, as Keith gave a moving performance of it (IMHO).Despite being another victim of faulty sound, “Midnight Rambler” still thrilled me. Another tour debut and full-throttle number, Doo, Doo…(Heartbreaker),” was an especially welcome surprise for me as I haven’t heard it on previous tours for a very long time. I first saw the song performed in 1975 at Madison Square Garden. When I saw the band play it on Sunday night, I could hardly believe that it was being performed with as much gusto as it had been 49 years ago. That’s what makes The Rolling Stones the band that it is - truly the world’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll band (IMHO).

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  2 месяца назад +1

@@ronalaurence4105 What a fantastic review - thanks so much. Totally agree. Very interesting in that I was on the complete opposite side of the stadium and you were a whole section lower (much lower) and you had the same exact sound issues. As you stated Bitch was the 2nd song and it started heavy there. Sounded like a bad bootleg from the 70's. And the sound took a big detour starting with Honky Tonk Women, Midnight Rambler and especially Paint It Black. Just awful. Yet the sound on the floor, according to the cell phone videos sound great. Midnight Rambler like a different song vs what I heard. And Honky Tonk Women had like phasing issue or something. Could actually hear it wavering within the song. But as you said tremendous performance and I had a ball as well. But with the technology today for stadium shows, the question begs an answer - what is going on. Apparently similar issues at other Stones stadium shows this tour.

I just bumped into this video, and all I can say is Thank You for this generous review of the show. I'm in The Netherlands, so I follow the current tour with whatever people are posting on YT - and so far I am not unsatisfied with the results. There are some truly wonderful clips out there. But to hear the reactions to a show from a long time fan, who obviously knows what he is talking about (unlike some "professional" reviewers), and to find out what the experience was to actually be there is great!
From what can judge through my screen and headphones the show you went to was one of the best of the tour; they seem a bit more loose and throw in quite some surprises here.
Great to hear you brought your whole family, you truly incorporated art and culture in their upbringing in a fine way.

I'm a bit stunned they dropped 'Miss You' from the set list. That song I think has been played on every Rolling Stones stadium tour since 1978. Total bummer about the sound quality, I would think by the second night they would have figured that out. Glad you and your family had a great time at the show. There's one thing you can always say about The Rolling Stones, they plug in and play "Live," the only way to hear a band no matter what happens!

Hey there, I was at the show last night. I feel the same as you…exhausted just going to the show, don’t know how they do it! Any time I felt like sitting down I had to stop myself and get back on my feet. Wasn’t going to disrespect an 80 year old rock and roll band that can perform with such energy. I came from L.I. drove to LIRR into Penn Station, walked to Port Authority took the bus to MetLife. It was a far walk to box office. I thought I was smart not buying a ticket ahead of time. Wrong! The seat I was going to get online at $250 was now $475! Decided to take advice from others and wait it out. Started to panic at 8:45. When I finally got to the window I was able to buy a ticket $250/all in the exact section I originally wanted! Section 113, row 23. I lucked out with an aisle seat too! The surrounding crowd were great. This was only my second time at MetLife and did I mention, this was my FIRST Stones concert? I was very impressed with the whole concert. I did notice the sound wasn’t as clear as I hoped, but thought that was because it was an open stadium? I loved Chanel Haynes, mesmerizing! Didn’t buy any merch but now I’m bummed I didn’t get a shirt from the parking lot. I almost did but the guy was getting threatened by security at the time. It was the longest walk from my section to parking lot K to catch the bus back to Port Authority. Then I just made the train before I would’ve had to wait until almost 3 a.m. As I limped home with blisters on my feet, all I could think about was, I wonder if Mick is as exhausted as me and hoped he had good cushioning in his shoes! 😆

I was there. Got a same day ticket on TM GA standing only rear floor. TM reduced the price of these tix to $155 plus $35 service charge for a short time frame. All other tix were crazy expensive on TM and Stub Hub. Luckily the nice folks in Guest Services reassigned me to a seat in Sec. 118. Standing would have been rough for me. I didn't notice any issues with the sound from my location. Mick's voice was as strong as usual and Keith sounded great on his two numbers. The guitars were loud and raw. Ronnie's lead on Heartbreaker was a little off but it worked I thought Keith played very well last night.
I've seen almost every tour since 1975. My last shows included Sixty Years in Hyde Park London, No Filter Met Life and Twickenham London. The band always delivers, never disappoints. I was able to get the same bootleg shirt as you before the show same price. Saw some other cool bootleg designs way out in lot including a tye dye. I usually always go for the bootleg shirts. Official merchandise way too expensive but I've bought official for The Stones before but not last night. So glad I went, loved the show. Will this be the last tour? Probably not.

I'm delighted you got there and had a great time.
It sounds like the audience was as good as The Stones themselves.
As for the sound, I went to several stadium shows back in day at Wembley Stadium, and the sound was really good. The visuals were less good - you could barely see the performers and the screens weren't that large then either.
Still, it looks like MetLife does a lot of rock shows, so you would think the sound should be consistent throughout the stadium - but, from what you are saying, it was inconsistent, so that does sound like a mixing issue.
As for backing bands, as you know, some bands allow the backing bands to use their systems, and some absolutely don't. I don't know where The Stones stand on that.
Anyway, it sounds like you got your (considerable) money's worth, and I doubt they will be rolling around much longer - so a magical event.

      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  2 месяца назад +1

Thanks so much Tim- yea you nailed it. And The Stones have played Metlife / Giant's stadium so many times. My gut is they're using a new system, because depending on location, many concert goers on this tour have said the sound was lousy - since it wavered throughout the show, though mostly very muddled and bass heavy, I think it was a mixing issue. Severe phasing on Honky Tonk Women was weird. I'm not sure. But they should've figured it out by now so maybe just an inferior sound system. Still a magical night like you said. Best, Alan

Jagger is just out of this world. It’s incredible how much energy he has at his age. I’ve caught some footage on RUclips of this tour and he’s as active on stage now as he was 20 yrs ago. It always takes a few days to calm down after a Stones gig.

I drove from Baltimore to see the second show in Jersey. I sat in the 330 section…sounds like I was fairly close to you. We noticed the distortion a bit too during several songs but I attributed it to the stadium. It wasn’t too distracting for me as I thought the musicianship was outstanding and one of the very best set lists I’ve heard them play. The crowd was vast but my section, besides a few were rather lame. I was one of the few that got up to dance until the last song. But the crowd as a whole sang a lot and seemed okay overall. The Stones were on fire. Man, the energy, passion, and fun that they bring to a show is incredible. I’ve seen them 10 times and I’m amazed every time. Good to hear you had a great time, Alan...I know we were all getting a little leery when we saw the early setlists....and how they dropped chestnuts like Out of Time, Off my Cloud, for no reason....great to see Midnight Rambler back in, and hopefully it stays until they get to Chicago at the end of next month. And great that you got to hear Heartbreaker! I've only heard them do that once--at Summerfest in 2015 when it won the fan vote, as well. I still wish they would do a 'legitimate' b-stage set, just the core group, of a handful of their blues covers...even three or four songs, but I'm probably never going to get that.
So were you all dancing in your seats? The last time I saw them, at Soldier Field in 2019, I too was on the upper deck of the stadium. A very young man sitting in front of me literally danced for the entire show...he couldn't have been more than 28! He was wearing a checkered blue polo shirt and khaki pants. He constantly danced, swayed and gyrated for the entire show. He kept his head back, eyes closed, swaying and singing! I didn't think someone that young would be so into the Stones! What got me was the polo shirt and khaki pants. And then there was an Indian girl next to me, dancing all night as well! I'm usually too focused on the stage/music to notice or remember much going on around me.

Yea they dropped the false Ending on Sweet Sounds - I love the false ending - even though by now we all know it's there - but I think it's cool and really builds the song to a climax. But no its gone. Thanks for your fabulous description of the young fan - isn't that great - yea - it sure is. Enjoy Chicago - I know you will. The Stones are rolling now for sure.

Was the audience quiet when 'Wild Horses' was played? Screaming when a quiet song is played makes no sense since you can't hear the song. Soundchecks, hopefully, were done to check the sound system. That doesn't guarantee nothing will go wrong, but it gives the band some confidence. Plus a soundcheck in an empty venue prior to the crowd coming in doesn't guarantee the sound system is powerful enough to overcome screaming fans. Equipment failure can happen at anytime.

I think Keith needs to go on a diet. Granted, the previous videos of Keith was in the past, but I was surprised he has gain a lot of weight. Ronny looked fine. Mick, of course, is into keeping in shape., so he looked in great shape.
I enjoyed the concert; not the same as being there as you were, but enjoyed it nevertheless.

Wow, Sorry about the sound. I saw the Vegas show since that was the only weekend one initially in my area. I live in LA so it was an easy drive. The LA date was weeknight until the 2nd was added on Saturday. I think I will go to that also, there are tickets still available. The Vegas show was great, the sound was echoe-ish it a bit. It was impossible to buy any merchandise before the show. Even during the it the line was crazy, they had 2 stands set up in the middle of GA where we were. After the show we ran out to the outside stands and spent some money. Got the deluxe version of the program also in a die cut envelope. So nice from outside, don’t want open it. For the No Filter tour I just ordered things online. Same mile long mob scene at the stand which I saw in Santa Clara CA. I think those guitar shaped fans were for the vip section. Great idea, I should have dumpster dived also, LOL. Maybe at SOFI. I still have the confetti from another Vegas show, the Licks tour at the MGM Grand 2003. I was scraping the floor. My 1st Stones show ever was in 1989 November, Steel Wheels at the Mets stadium. Still my all time (sentimental) favorite concert. Since that I missed No Security, 50 and Counting , and Zip Code tours ( we did line up for the lottery at the Fonda theater LA show, no luck. I was pissed, LOL) Great video as always! Thank you,

    Nice video.
I got decades of experience as artist myself that I noticed two things (from videos so could be wrong, but the symptoms is recognizable.)
They have had a lot of low frequency on bassdrum boosted (weird for any band trying to play Stones. Backbeat is snare drum "up front," not bass drum.
Seems to me they play loud on stage too. I really like Steve, but I heard Charlie complained about loud sound on stage many times in interviews, (then he must have done that regularly on tours too. Maybe they lost that guy telling the soundguys to turn down. No way Keith/Mick ask for less volume.)
You can hear it on Mick's singing. He push harder to get through (over/equal to) the band, not all songs.
I hired a jazz drummer for my Stones band, but he suddenly played as it was rock. It was not why I hired him. I wanted the jazz drumming not the hard knocking rock drummer. Steve can do any kind of drumming, but maybe he think as the jazz dummer I hired? ...that Rolling Stones is rock music, rock drumming. It is rock music, but on stage they've sounded like a jam session. And I held in jam sessions for decades myself and the best nights is when the musicians hear each other. Then I have had be "a bitch" and tell them to turn down plenty of times throughout the night.

Thanks so much. My gut is also so much bass. As Darryl Jones was barely on the screen, I couldn't tell what he was playing or overplaying. Of course back in the day, Bill and Charlie followed Keith - The Stones were a guitar led band. Hence the famous, hard to copy slight delay in the Stones sound as they follow Keith. That almost imperceptable push and pull of the Stones so well felt in Tumbling Dice for instance. The new band, with Keith's weakened state, at least in the beginning of the tour was more classic rock like you said. The rhythm section was leading the band with Keith and Ronnie filling in the sound so to speak. I love your analogy of the jazz drummer playing rock. Steve Jordan does a fine job and of course he's a fabulous drummer, but definitely different to Charlie's swing. But the massive bass - still not sure where it was coming from. My gut says it was Jordan's kick drum and much to aggressive feel on the kick drum or possibly the tom. But couldn't tell from my height and limited Jordan video. Paint It Black from my location was over the top with it. Yet down below on the floor sounded much better. I don't know. Thanks so much for your expertise - fantastic.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow you was there so I want to just remind us both that I only interpret this, I don’t know the fact, but to me the symptoms is there.
Another thing is that I know soundguys love to boost the bass drum (kick) in every big venue I’ve been. I haven’t played stadium scale, but plenty of times with separate soundguys for backline and couple of thousands spectators.
The low frequencies don’t die out as easily as the high frequency. I noticed on stones here in Oslo Norway (Europe) ten years ago (today,) they played louder the last part of the set. Could be that was happening from Honky Tonk and low frequency especially. I haven’t see more than a couple of videos from the 26. So I just guess from your words and what I noticed the other shows.
It seemed that the first show in NJ was balanced sound. It could be small margins. Nice to hear about that Keith’s new song worked well.

I thought for sure they would put street fighting man back on as the opener and put start me up back on down the set as this is the second of 2 shows at MetLife, as they usually do, but it is what it is, and heartbreaker is amazing live, I saw it when they last performed it back in Dallas in 2021 and it was awesome! and tell me straight is amazing live, I really don’t see why Keith doesn’t keep it as a permanent song in his set, it works great in my opinion, and I was really surprised to see midnight rambler back in the set, although it wasn’t the best performance and Ronnie’s solo was lacking, and I could see from one video that mick messed up or sum went wrong? and overall it looked like a great show! and sorry that the sound was lousy, the sound at the Vegas show was lousy as well, and the raiders stadium is notorious for having bad sound for concerts, so I thought it was just the stadium but ig it’s both the sound crew and the venue to blame, and this is coming for a guy who was on the floor watching the show, but although the sound was lousy it definitely didn’t take away from the experience and the show, and as a side note on merch, I usually get the shirt with the show specific artwork on it and for some odd reason the whole venue and the merch truck didn’t have it so I had to resort to getting it on the stones website and that kinda took away a big chunk from the show experience, but I’m glad you had a great time and a great setlist as well!

No - sound was shitty alot of the time - but we had a fantastic time and so glad we were there. For their age etc, they are miraculous.

I've discussed this issue many times, but I gotta say, sound issues not withstanding, they were working hard up there and concentrating hard to do the best they can at this stage of their life with the debilitating health issues and they delivered. It was a marvel and great fun. And most importantly they are real and that is unique in this musical world.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Ronnie was only hired because Keith did not want another great lead guitarist showing him up .RW great in the Faces has always sucked in the Stones, so shame on Keef and his ego.

@@beoz658 That's not true. The most important thing was bringing in a play who fit in with the band, not just musically but personally. That's not easy to do, as the whole history of music proves. They knew Woody for years, jammed together for years, worked on Woody's solo album. And back then Woody played some decent lead. The '75 tour and '76 tours had a different sound then the subsequent tours and Woody was playing serious lead guitar, though not in the league of Mick Taylor. Afterwards, they really switched to the "art of weaving" as they say. On top of that, personality wise, without Ron Wood, The Stones would never have survived.
