What makes a man a King? Aside from genetic luck and a glittering crown, it’s a castle. In this three part series, we’ll explore 15 of the most historically important Royal Castles & Palaces of England.
In the last episode we explored the medieval castles built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century to impose his might upon the land. For his warrior descendants, the Normand and the Plantagenet, having a home that could withstand a trebuchet was paramount. But by the 15th and 16th centuries, war had moved from the castle to the battlefield and the new Tudor monarchs could prioritize grandiose spaces and luxurious living. It was time to move out of the dank defensive castles and in to a new breed of lavish, sprawling palaces.
Richmond Palace 1383-1649
Greenwich Palace (Palace of Placentia) 1500-1660
Hampton Court Palace 1529-1760
Palace of Whitehall 1530-1698
St James’s Palace 1530-1837

Hello, thanks for the wonderful video, i learnt a lot.
would Nonsuch Palace not had deserved some mentioning also? i guess one of the pics shown was it, but no explanations... after all, it was not the cheapest one, as far as i read
Lindsay you need to fix the longest reigning monarchs video
👍
AMAZING. 👑
Cardinal Woolsey: *builds himself a castle*
Henry 8th: "It's free real estate"
I’m glad that Queen Lindsay also agrees that all she can hear is the organ Placenta too 😂
That’s all I hear too.😂😌
I thought that was where women went to give birth. 😆
Me, too! I thought I was alone in this!glad to hear I’m not!
When The Great Fire of 1666 hit London, the designs of the buildings changed due to the aftermath. That’s why we have great constructed Palaces like Buckingham Palace!
We can all agree that Lindsay gives us the best Historical Content :)
Hi Elizabeth!
@@elizabethiiqueenofu.k.head9009 Hey Namesake 😂 l
Gloriana lol that's hilarious
Yes I just watch a Lindsay video that said you still haunt Windsor castle especially in times of turmoil. Is it true your majesty?

My favourite residences are Balmoral Castle, Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Sandringham Palace!
That's my favorite place You majesty
@@Kasi.L3m0n glad to hear that!

:D, How's Your day going Your Majesty?
I once visited London when I was around 10. I hoped so desperately that I would see you lol, but I swear I did see Kate Middleton leave through the main gate!
To be fair Medieval Castles we’re horrible that’s why I constructed these Palaces of Joy and laughter! I love Hampton Court!
Hey Father!
@@queenelizabethiofengland7338 Hey Lizzie!

With respect, Your Grace, that apostrophe is improper within the context of that sentence. Please spare me the tower!
Oh henryyyy! Thanks for replacing me for that bastard Anne Boleyn, she was nor a queen, nor better than me, you brought my Catholic faith to an end. 😡😡
I would love to see St. James palace, Hampton Court, The Tower, Edinburgh Castle in the United Kingdom. But I would love to see Versailles, and the Winter Palace.
I’d love to go ghost hunting in st James… so many people died there. If ghosts exist, you’ll probably find some there.
Ditto
Versailles is spectacular, but nothing beats Rome!
I got the chance to see the Tower, Banquet Hall, and Hampton Court when I studied abroad in England. It was awe inspiring to be able to walk in the places I had studied and I remember actually crying walking into the Hampton Court Gallery because it had been a dream of mine for years
So glad i'm not alone in hearing the word "placenta!"
For his divorce, Henry VIII claimed his marriage to Catherine was incest because she had been married to his older brother for 5 months before he died in 1502. They didn't get married until 1509, though, so it's not like he didn't have awhile to realize he was wedding his brother's widow! (In contrast, Queen Mary had only been engaged to her husband's older brother for 6 weeks before he died. She and George V got engaged a year later.)
At the time he realised that would work, they spent years (think 5) petitioning the Pope to allow the divorce and finally found a bible passage saying it was against God especially with combined 5 still births and miscarriages
If I could visit any one of them, it would be Balmoral. I do not like big cities much. I am part Scottish and have always wanted to see where my ancestors lived.
I think it's open for visitors part of the year.
I've been fortunate enough to see both the Tower of London and Hampton Court and they are absolutely incredible! Windsor and Buckingham palace are definitely on my bucket list though.
Going to Germany this year I had a lay over at the airport. I’m afraid to say but anyway. I think I flew over one of them you mentioned. That is about as close as I came to one. Now the ones in Germany are very nice. The churches are a thing to behold.
I haven't seen any of these locations in person & not sure which one I wish to see the most, but a tour of the palaces is absolutely on my bucket list! 👑🏰
Hello Lindsay. I really love your content. You always come up with very informative and interesting bits of history that we all can be amazed at. Would you ever consider making a video about Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz? I think you would be fascinated by this extraordinary woman's life.
A biscuit factory and a prisoner of war camp? I’ll take complete opposites for $400
I went to the Tower of London this summer. Next time I want to see Windsor castle. 🏰
Great history video I enjoyed it can't wait to see more soon. Your videos are always enjoyable and relaxing have a great day 😀
This gives me GCSE history flashbacks where we had a 16 mark question on Tudor and Medieval castles
Same
GCSE? Green Cove Springs Elementary?
I’ve only been to The Tower and would love to see them all, especially Windsor Castle.
Windsor castle .its my dream to see it in person am from d Caribbean
I get so excited when a new video is up. I learn so much and it helps me relax enough to sleep!
Current Royal family’s palace isn’t as fancy as that. At least I don’t have mice in my house despite not having any fancy heirlooms or jewels.
I just ADORE your channel sooooo much!! Thank you...thank you...for absolutely the best history channel on RUclips!!
You really sold the hell out of that mattress! Now I wish I had one! I'd never heard of this brand before but I'll check it out. 👍
Thank You Lindsay!💜
I may seem ignorant but I’m curious - you mentioned that many paintings, including a Hans Holbein portrait of Henry VIII were destroyed, you then put a picture of the Henry VIII painting, if the painting was destroyed in 1698 with the Palace of Whitehall, how do we have a picture that we can see what the painting looked like?
Oh I actually know this one! Henry loved this painting so much that he commissioned many copies to be made. Some of these were done by Holbein's students. The original painting was huge and showed Henry with his mother, father and Jane Seymour. The copies were sometimes smaller versions, or the most famous is a cropped but life size version that just shows Henry. They aren't Holbein's original, but were made in his style with the same tools, techniques and made only a few years later, so they are still impressive in their own rights. One of the best preserved life size Henry ones is currently on display in my City and I went to see it last week. Truly incredible.
@@emilyb6002 Thank you! I was still confused when the painting popped up on screen
These videos are so enjoyable and relaxing 😊
Thank you for another exelent video!
Loving this series...
Thank you for making Part 2! now one last thing you should make part 3.
You never fail to impress me with your advert segways XD Seemless! And entertaining
Love your content! You have a great voice. I can see you being a narrator or commentator for the history channel.
For this segment, I haven't visited any of them, but I do want to see ALL of them! Especially Hampton Court!
-it used to be a leper hospital, and a lot of people died here…
-sounds like a great place for my new palace!
Great content as always, Lindsay. I just wanted to leave a comment on your sponsered spiel. I love the way you made the ad tie in with your personal interests. Good job on promoting in such an entertaining way.
it was great!! i usually skip them but that was fun and informative
I saw the tag in a couple slides so I'm hoping it's coming up... But I would most like to visit Sandringham.
Why is your voice so damn calming 😎 love your videos .. I’ve already listened to these on podcast but now I have to watch the videos again 😝😝
I grew up near Leeds Castle. I went there a couple of times when I was a girl. Blew me away every time.
Very well researched
Thank you!!
I love your voice, makes the info easy to understand & follow along, I really love watching your videos, I have many roots, 1 of which is relation of the Davidson's in Scotland, which thru the Clan Davidson helped form the Chattan Federation & bought at 1 time from the Bain family, the Castle called Tulloch. Also on my father's side his mother was a Howard of England
LOL... clan McBain here... we'd like our castle back - you never finished paying for it... but, we did move out of England and have been in America for more than a century...
I would LOVE to see a video on Alhambra!
I heard that one worker in Hampton Court was walking by a hall, when suddenly he felt great anguish... then he saw he was walking down at the hall where Katherine Howard ran to beg for ther life. People told him the ghost of Katherine Howard had passed through him.
early and i adore your videos
Thank you for all the amazing content you post!
Could you maybe do a video about warrior women/royals from around the world? Even if it’s just mythological women like Mulan it would be amazing 🤍☺️
What a strange request you make. Lindsay presents historical facts as they are in a captivating way This is her appeal. You're asking her to create an agendized presentation
of historical facts to support it. She making commentary about a fictional character wouldn't fit into the content she's devoted her channel to.
Being From America , Having an Immense Fear Of Flying & Also Dirt Poor , Unfortunately I Have Not Had The Pleasure Of Visiting Any Of These Castles & Palaces , But My #1 Bucket List Place Is ... Hampton Court Palace , My #2 Place Would Be The Tower Of London .
🏰
I would love to learn about Nonsuch Palace
I would love to visit Windsor castle 😍. Can you make a video about the Russian palaces?
Where wer u when i had history lessons in need of some extra stuff for my essays.
13:37 apparently this scene plays out in the modern day in an Aethereal manner
Girl please do the A.D. Byzantine royal families!!😍
Hey lindsay i trully love your videos .
Im not sure if we are allowed to suggest topics well if we are. I'd love to hear about princess Margaret countess of snowdon. Thanks
Great suggestion!
@@LindsayHoliday Thanks a lot!
thanks
The Banqueting House is closed now.
Can you do a video about Cleopatra?
If those castle walls could talk!!
Nonsuch was also a favoruite of Henry Vlll and he built it to rival any French palace. Sadly it was lost over time and taken apart and sold brick by brick to pay gambling debts.
@Trojan75 Henry Vlll built it to compete with the richest kings in Europe and he named it as there would no other such palace in the world like his.
All the palaces is in this video are gone except for St. James
Wow. William and Mary really likes ruining palaces huh.
these are well done, fun to watch. I'd prefer the personal editorials be edited out though ex:"all I hear is placenta", if that hadn't been mentioned, it''d be better. TYVM
How did they pay for these castles?
can you do queen victoria great grandchildren and great great grandchildren please plz can you do it next please plz i m your favourite fav fan please plz
she already did a grandchildren video
@@rayanzshehabz he’s asking for a great grandchild vid
@@royaltyfandomx sorry it showed on my screen a grandchild not a great grandchild

Me too, al I hear is placenta…lol
Can we also get the royal castles for all European monarchs.
yeyy
What on earth is the picture at 13:48?!?!
💗💗
Tourist: Wow This Palace was very Cool!
Henry VIII: OFF WITH HIS HEAD!
Tourist: WTF!?
fun story: 10:46
Dude so glad William and Mary ran out of money to remodel Hampton Court. The Baroque side is cool but the medieval side is cooler.
That’s why Royals have so many residences……avoid filth and hygiene. I thought might been for displaying all of art, physical representation of their wealth, power and authority or just Royal hoarders. Simple explanation avoiding filth and disease.

It must have been great having 1500 people party and dance / drunk.I think we overlook how much fun it was to be rich.
Henry the VIII was a complete nightmare
❤
I deserve at least one like that 👌

Could a member of the royal family Mary a none aristocratic royal ??
Yes, today many of the uks have married non royals
I think you've got the wrong King William at 19:49. You picture appears to be of William IV, who would not be born for 67 years. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_IV I think you meant this guy: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_III_of_England
Quick question: if the Mao Zedong revolution never happened, or if the royal family got control back, who would be the Chinese emperor today?
I just wanna to say that... England know how to take care of there historical places
How could there be an Emu in St James Palace Menagerie in the early 1600s. Emus are native to Australia...Australia wasn't discovered until 1770???¥
😅😊
Sorry but Hampton Court Palace will always be Cardinal Wolsey Palace in my opinion.

Personally, I find the content maker’s accent and weird stresses in repetitive patterns extremely grating. Couldn’t listen past the first few minutes.
Don't wish to be rude but the woman's American voice is so annoying.
Great history video I enjoyed it can't wait to see more soon. Your videos are always enjoyable and relaxing have a great day 😀
