Benzaldehyde is the smell. It should smell poisononous, because it's a smell associated with cyanide, but because fruit started making it, we humans like the smell now. Benzaldehyde is also called 'almond oil'. It smells like artificial cherry flavoring.
5:29 That smell is either the jungle or the millipedes ultimate defense, *Cyanide* you see, some millipede species can produce cyanide that smells kind of like cherries or other fruit, the cyanide can or can’t be harmful to you depending on the species we are dealing with.
I was more wondering maybe if it's trying to defend against carnivorous type "predators" emitting a sweet smell will deter it from eating it??? That was my random assumption, I may be wrong though
@@melwinder1I would assume that it’s not necessarily the “sweetness” of the smell that deters them, but what it represents. As other comments have brought up, it has to do with a chemical tht is found in both cyanide as well as some fruits. Humans eat fruits and so with time we’ve learned to associate it as a good rather than a bad smell. Carnivores most likely will smell it and get warning signals similar to us smelling rotten food, as it will be more associated with cyanide which is incredibly dangerous for them.
I’m so glad that you’re willing to go after creatures that are possibly unknown or not the most recognizable or the most trendy cuz I found this creature absolutely fascinating and I never would’ve known about it if you didn’t make this video.
Mark, that beetle was quite scary looking until it was crawling around on your hand and it could see its tiny head and even tinier eyes. She is a very strange beetle and I could see her as a character on Star Wars…lol. I love your enthusiasm when you find different animals and tell us about them! I am glad it is not just all about being stung. Thank you for an amazing video and take care!!! 😄💙🐬🐍🐊🫶🏼
EARLY! Watching these videos makes me so happy. I've been watchingever since i was a kid. Im suffering from severe depression and have been SA'd, and i love nature, so just seeing these make me super duper happy and make me smile. Learning about these different types of creatures fascinates me.
Hope you're doing okay, wherever you are in the world. I'd highly suggest starting small trips to explore near wherever you live if it's safe! Even if it's a park bench to start! Wishing you well ❤

Even if beetles didn't exist in the Carboniferous, it really looks like something that would come out of that era. what a spectacular bug you guys found
I actually accidentally came across a trilobite beetle and the armored millipede few years back in Kuantan, Malaysia. Didn't know what it was, as it look so alien-ny, and the millipede indeed smell kinda sweet when im poking it
I don't know how he does it, but Mark continuously surprises me with how many crazy, weird, wild, and wonderful creatures exist out there. What a scary but beautiful creature that beetle is! And I truly appreciate how often he goes off the path to observe and spotlight other amazing creatures as well.
I always get so excited when a brand new Brave Wilderness video drops. Especially the ones that don’t feature stings and bites. Those videos are fun but stress me out.
This beetle is absolutely crazy! I never knew they existed! Thank you Brave Wilderness for continuing to be Great and educational! By far my favorite nature channel of all time. My 3 year old loved this also!

Hi Coyote! I like your vids with kids! I love animals and watching all those videos with those lucky kids you were with is my dream to go and interact and see Animals and Aquatic animals ❤🎉
Crazy to think I was raised in Malaysia hiking in Penang and always took pictures of these insects because they looked cool. Glad u made a video about finding them.
That armored millipede was so awesome. Really nice seeing how friendly it is. That was cool that it gave a very sweet odor smell. I never seen an insect that could give good orders. I wish I could have real experience with the small. I may not be correct for the reason of this type of body order, but my big guess is there could be certain predators that may not like his odor. That trilobite beetle was pretty cool too. I never seen a beetle with this kind of body shape before. I really loved the colors of it. That red was what brought it out. I can't believe how tiny its head is. The face was really cute looking. I can easily see its really cute eyes. I even saw its mouth pretty good. I really love how safe and friendly it is.
It's always lovely to see the fascination of Mark by finding those fantastic creatures! As always, it is a nice adventure for us all! Thanks so much! But it takes a lot of fantasy to see the same beetle in the fossil shown. To me, the fossil looks very different in its shape.
since yall are looking for cool animals now instead of dangerous ones heres a list i made duckbilled tree frog, hairy frog, anableps, mata mata, tuatara, draco lizard, phrynocephalus mystaceus, Calmanesia sp, thai spiky isopod, pangolin, and the hoatzin chances are you’ve probably showcased a lot of these but probably not all. just a few ideas, thank you for the video
Man this video was kind of nostalgic since pretty much all the little creatures you covered I also saw during my time in Borneo. Hope you find yourself a brightly coloured lichen huntsman!
I doubt I’ll get a response, Any information on the film you guys announced working on regarding the Galápagos Islands? I’ve always been so intrigued by that region of the planet (and Madagascar) and was so enlightened when I saw the video speaking about you guys (a channel I love) working on such a product! Please any info would be greatly appreciated.
I find it so odd that I can't handle the sight of centipedes, but millipedes don't bother me at all. Actually, that armored one Mark caught is actually pretty cool! (Also, I'd never handle a millipede since the ones where I live tend to stink pretty bad ^_^0 ) I believe the smell is to ward off predators. The smell is a musk that also is supposed to taste fowl. I've seen both cats and birds spit one out if they're foolish enough to catch one! Also, I've never seen a trilobite beetle before! It really does look like a fossil! Awesome!👍
It's awesome that there are still some creatures that reminds us of the times of the dinosaurs. When u got that millipede it reminded me that certain lemurs catch millipedes and it looks like they get intoxicated from the millipede. Could you ever maybe do a video on that?
Wooow Really Awesome looking beetle!!!! Same feelings, feel like a kid again seeing this beetle. Can just tell that's prehistoric!! Haha. Think this just became my 3rd favorite beetle now haha. Hercules Beetles are my favorite and bombardier beetles my 2nd...Truly Amazing find thank you for sharing this with us!!!!
it would be cool for one of these vids of the team finding unique insects etc if youd show how to safely flip rocks and logs for the person and the animals they may find, lots of people say you should return the rocks exactly as you found it but i think doing so would endanger the things you find as they didnt get under there with the full weight of the object pressing down on them as they would be if you try to place it exactly as it was,. being in Australia myself flipping rocks over is like gambling on when something venomous is going to bite you or not haha so it would be interesting to see if you take any precautions when you do it all over the world.

Hi
Early
Brave wilderness isn’t just about getting stung, it’s sad that people don’t appreciate these videos as much.
Agreed. The unfortunate fact is that most people value entertainment over education.
Because they aren’t what they use to be, especially since Cyote is no longer in them
But many people still appreciate these videos too and that’s all what matters
The people who only watch these for the stings and bites, are the equivalent of people who only pick up a book to look at the pictures.
It's also about getting pooped on by weird critters hahahahha

Cherry pits do contain cyanide if I am not mistaken, so it makes sense.
Benzaldehyde I think in the videos specific case.

I bought almonds that smelled like this , they tasted bitter like cherries. They were bad. Cyanide.
Bro imagine being some random millipede, chilling, eating leaves, and one day being picked up and touched by some hairless ape
Apes are more intelligent than humans humans are some of the most unintelligent people on earth depending on who it is
so it starts musking to make itself smell like delicious fruits and pastries.

I love the educational aspect of this video, sting videos got its place, but I'd prefer this type of videos more tbh. Also, what a beautiful creature!
I agree, one of Mark’s other videos showcasing the Bobbit worm was fascinating to watch.
