This album is so special to me. Back in 2015 i was going through the darkest period of my life with depression/suicidal urges/self-harm & it was this album that served as therapy for me. I was able to wallow in the shadows with an artist. it encapsulated the emotion & feeling of depression so well through not only the lyrics but the tone of the beats as well. A truly incredible record, dark piece of art that swamps you in the darkness with earl himself. It’s a very odd feeling to not feel alone while drowning in the depths of someone else’s demons. Although i do understand what you mean that this probably wouldn’t help a negative mind state...it did help me feel less alone & in a very odd way it grounded me.

"Just because something isn't necessarily an enjoyable listen doesn't mean that it doesn't have merit" This is super important man. I've always stood by the fact that the best music makes you experience any emotion, not strictly happiness. If a piece of music can change the way you feel, that piece of music is objectively good. This is why Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked At Me is one of my favorite albums of all time. It's fucking miserable, but it's fucking brilliant.

This album is definitely a grower, I feel like its uncomfortable at first because it sounds so dim and off kilter but much like SRS it makes more and more sense in repeated listens, personally i came to appreciate the simplicity of the melodies and sound choices for this album, there isn't really any rap albums that sound like this so I think that's commendable + almost the whole album was produced by him so that is the reason it's less extravagant than Doris.

As somebody who has been dealing with depression and anxiety for 15+ years, this album is so deeply relatable that it doesn't actually make me feel bad, and in fact it's something I will go to in those bad times, those times when I am struggling to feel and connect, because I can always feel something in Earl's beautiful penmanship that will keep me tethered, and the beats are perfect for letting you focus on what he is saying. This was especially true when I suffered my own losses, but this was actually the thing that would pull me away from my tears, to make me remember that loss is universal and human and that we all get fucked up over things, and that there are plenty who have similar mental health issues as me. It's easy for somebody to say "you aren't alone", but it's another thing entirely to hear so many thoughts that echo your own put on a record, to just feel that shit in your soul.
But I've also listened to A Crow Looked at Me multiple times so uh, not sure I can be the one to recommend you give this some more spins lmao

It's funny, I've never found Earl's music depressing, except for Solace. For my taste, he and his producers do a fantastic job of releasing tension during the run of on of his albums, whether it's through a clever line that I can't help but smile at or a really pretty bit of instrumentation. It kind of weaves me in and out of the darkness and depression that he raps on, without leaving me feeling any one type of way for too long.

I honestly feel like this album helps me out more whenever I'm feeling down way more than anything uplifting does. Sometimes understanding what is bothering you head on and taking in the feeling of darkness/depressive thoughts can help you out in the long run I've found, rather than just ignoring why you're in a dark place all together and ending up in the same position without any real direction. This album is a great coping mechanism for me whenever I am in that grieving stage and my personal favorite of Earl's discography.

This probably still stands as my favourite Earl album, though SRS production wise is more of a trip. I feel like his rapping is the hardest it’s ever been on this album in terms of blunt lyricism in blunted rhyme scheme. DNA and Grief are probably a couple of the best tracks he’s done but the whole album feels perfect at the 30 minutes it is. It’s also very nostalgic for me as a fan since Doris because IDLSIDGO came out in my senior year of highschool. Hope you do solace because it’s a 10 minute masterpiece in his discography. It came out later the same year and it is also very depressing but it’s hands down one of the best pieces of art he’s done.

I love this album and the nihilistic energy it oozes, I find it not just depressing but also extremely pissed off and frustrated and the whole world really, but most of all, himself. Extremely relatable, but it's not just the emotion, cause earls pen game, while more straightforward than his usual, is still brutal with some of the bars. Grief, dna, wool, mantra, faucet so many hard hitting tracks on this, easily my fav earl album, one of my top 5 of all time. But I can understand your reaction, and anyone who isn't grabbed by it on first listen, but idk it speaks to me on a deep level that few other albums do. The title itself could be a motto for certain eras of my life. Listen to the 10 min track/ep solace if you haven't already, it's the transitional moment between this and some rap songs, it's very interesting.

I was also going through some dark times when he put this out. In some strange way it got me through those times knowing that I wasn’t alone even going through addiction which I am still am battling this very day.

Jon you def need to check out Wikis solo stuff too. I would recommend reacting to Lil Me by Wiki, my personal favorite and some of his best work objectively.

Yeah it definitely gets less depressing with each listen. This is one of my favorite albums ever and I like it a lot better than anything he’s made but it took me a couple listens but not terribly long to get over the emotional baggage. It doesn’t make it disappear but it adds an enjoyable factor to that emotional baggage

Also I think the best ''moment'' to listen to this album are sad times, or when you're going through some things in life. I think it's why so many people have this album close to their hearts

A few years ago I was diagnosed with manic depression and I had this album on multiple times a day for a good two years. I can't explain how it helped me but it just did, maybe Earls honesty held a great weight for me and was relatable. I unfortunately can't listen to it these days as it puts me back in that dark place mentally. So yeah it helped me for a time and now I affects me negatively. I'm doing much better these days and mostly listen to jazz to be honest but hey anyone going through hard times please know you are strong and can make it through. Hope you all have a beautiful week ahead.

I remember listening to faucet during one of my worst depressive episodes I’ve had to date, and to this day it’s actually hard to listen to that song again, even though I still love everything about it. One day I’ll see him live and recite every fucking word to that track
