How would it work if child has an absent parent or in a split home scenario? … and is the parent able to provide care to younger sibling when caring for the child with disabilities?

Hi Lily! In cases of absent parents or split homes, IHSS services are typically provided by the parent or legal guardian with primary custody, possibly extending to designated caregivers. Regarding the care of younger siblings while caring for a child with disabilities, IHSS services are generally allocated based on the specific needs of the individual receiving care. If the parent or caregiver is responsible for both the child with disabilities and younger siblings, IHSS may cover caregiving tasks related to the child's disability but may not extend to routine childcare duties for the younger siblings unless they are also eligible for IHSS services due to their own disabilities or special needs. Hope this helps!

So if you both work full time could one parent quit their job to be a parent provider?

Hello! Rules about parents working full time or part time are no longer applicable. Either parent can be the provider and still work. You just can’t log IHSS hours during your work hours. Hope this helps!

Hello! IHSS requires the recipient to have Medi-Cal, which is usually income-based but also has some avenues for children with disabilities regardless of parental income. If the child has Medi-Cal then they should be able to apply. Hope this helps!

My daughter is 3. She goes to school from 8-12 and then goes to a Medical daycare from 1-4pm. Can I get IHSS for her if she is technically somewhere else for most of the day, Mon-Friday? How do those hours work? I also plan to get PS. That’s the main goal. I do not work currently, but plan to go back to school, if that makes a difference.

Hello! You may be able to get IHSS, but they will deduct time from various tasks and PS for the hours that she spends at school and day care. It is very difficult to get PS for a three year old, so you should ensure that you have sufficient documentation. It is not a given at any age, especially at 3. We wish you well!
