- The War Of The Worlds 1934 - Special Features - The Original Theatre Bomber Sequence
So, for those that don't know... This whole channel was spawned by a theatre production. It wasn't a large affair, just a local production of the War Of The Worlds Radio Play.
It had been slightly rewritten to reflect the local area (Derby Nottingham). The original intentions of the director (as it was a simple read through of the play, with BBC microphones) was to use smoke machines and have some effects to spice it up a bit. Unfortunately, the venue didn't have the right licences etc to allow for what he wanted to do. So, at a loose end, he wasn't sure how to make it more interesting.
My sister, who performed in the production as a radio presenter/continuity announcer suggested that I might be able do something to help. They had a video projector hooked up at the venue.
As it was war of the worlds, and I loved it so much, I jumped at the chance.
But I only had a few weeks to put all of the sequences together, and I was starting from zero. So I had to design and rig a Tripod, Cylinder, landscapes, model the bombers... all of the things.
So I worked extremely hard to pull it all together. It wasn't perfect, but I think for a local audience it hopefully added a lot of value to the performance.
But the play lasted just 2 nights. Weeks of work limited to a couple of hundred eyes and then lost forever. But as I sat and thought about what I'd produced (which was very warmly received thank goodness!), it occurred to me that I could probably expand on what I'd created and make it a fun RUclips channel.
It took me nearly a year to get around to it, and really, I didn't expect any subscribers, or that many would find it. Obviously a few would, but, I had not anticipated that there was such a fandom for the story. I mean, I know everyone has a love for Jeff Waynes musical, well, it's hard not to isn't it!
But what I found was a massive amount of people who love it too.
And at the time of the release of this video, the channel has reached the benchmark of 1000 subscribers. A most pleasant and unexpected surprise! So, I hope this behind the scenes video brings you a little enjoyment as an adjunct to the official 1934 story. Technically, this video is part of the Orson Welles 1938 canon. Story elements that the pilot refers to are yet to happen in my version, which is why it wasn't used as it is. The pilot isn't played by me, and i will add a credit below at a later date if when I speak to them next they want me to add it (it is a member of the theatre group). But I know they are fine with me sharing this.
So that's about it.
Hopefully, as fun as this video is, you enjoyed the updated and expanded version in Flight of the 37s! But it is fun to see where that, and the whole channel originated! A cascade of fates.
So enjoy. Cheers everyone!
The last time I got hooked on a RUclips production was when I stumbled across Richard Boyland's 'Hellsreach'. This adaptation of WotWs is superb. Atmospheric, chilling, technically impressive, it tick's all the boxes. A great achievement.
Hmmm. RUclips swallowed my last reply, so I'll try again! Thank you for such a lovely comment. That was very welcomed and keeps the spirits burning! More videos are in the works, and hopefully the series will be continuing soon! Thank you again. :)
Totally agree.
@@shabazzy Thanks for the continued support Shaba :)
Hats off to the VA’s for this work. It’s that subtle kind details kind of like in the Homeworld games, they’re professional and trying to keep calm but you can feel the tension with how they breathe harder each sentence. They’re afraid and increasingly more so, up until they start yelling just at the end. They are afraid, but fear won’t stop them, for what little good their bravery earns.
Homeworld?
I see you are a man of culture as well.
Awesome as usual. 😊 Thank YOU for providing a truly unique experience. Keep up the great work!
My pleasure, and thank you as always!
Wohoo finaly
I had a bit of a hard time making out what was being said once the heat rays started firing, but I think I figured it out. Here's a transcription for anyone else who wants it.
"A thousand yards and we'll be over the first. ... Eight hundred yards. ... Six hundred. ... Four hundred. ... Two hundred."
"There they go."
"(something) is razed. There's green flash."
"They're spraying out with flame."
"Two thousand feet. Engines are going out. No chance to release bombs."
"Only one thing left- drop on them. Plane over(?)"
"We're diving on the first one"
"Now the engine's gone."
"Eight-"
drop on them, plane and all, :)
the idea of an on-stage production accompanied by extremely high quality cgi isn’t the first of it’s kind, but it’s still cool that not just Jeff Wayne does it
For sure... but the difference is that it was a small town production, not some big money production... so I think it really surprised the audience. It was good fun!
@@waroftheworlds1934 if anything it was overkill for a small, local production. Well done! (sorry for replying 9 months later lol
@@SlippingJim2 Haha, yes, I was scratching my head at the lateness of reply. Funnily though, as soon as I saw the conversation thread it came back. It's nice to know my memory still works! Anyway, glad to get a reply be it 9 minutes or 9 years. Overkill it was, and probably more of a testament to the opportunity it presented to me creatively, and my love of the story. Anyway, thanks :) See you again in 2025! lol
I remain awestruck by your attention to detail, your graphics, your presentation...all of it. It is clear that this is a true labor of love for all involved. It's so good--so consistently and amazingly good--it's mind-blowing. I can't begin to imagine how it's put together. All I know is that WOTW is just one of two RUclips channels I consider to have must-see content.
Wow, thank you. I feel honoured and humbled to be given such praise. I hope I can live up to it with future episodes! It certainly is a product of love, and enjoyment too. I'm just trying to make things that I'd like to see and in the process entertain others. Thank you again you are too kind.
They look like Tripods combined (no pun intended.) with Striders. Really cool design.
Wow! This is really good man! So happy it's catching traction. Good magick! And much love.
LOVE your version of WotW!!! GREAT JOB! (From an OLD WotW fan who has seen and read them ALL!)
Thank you Daniel!
these animations need to have it's own movie rhis is just bloody amazing
Thanks Doc! Someone else said the same thing that I just replied to. I said "you are watching the making of that movie. I intend to bring it all together at the end and make a much longer piece. It's just a lot of work to get there :)" So fingers crossed, (if you stick around anyway!) you'll get to see it! Thanks again for the lovely comment. New vids are on the way soon!
Imagine the horror of being a pilot in the 37s one after one picked of by the heat ray
Awesome! Please, please tell me you won't forget Thunder Child!! So many adaptations completely forget about it. (also you should try putting hashtags in your description! 10-15 of them will make your videos much easier to see in RUclips's SEO. More views!)
Oh, that absolutely will be happening. But it is further down the line. All in good time :) Also, thank you for the hashtag tip, I didn't know that. I'll have to give it a try!
This is still incredible... this makes me crave some sort of film adaptation of the 1938 broadcast but its' style is black and white.
Cheers! Yes, it could be done. The 2nd half is quite different to the first. It would need some solid actors.
@@waroftheworlds1934
Just for fun, who would you cast?
@@TGM_Productions I'm someone that would like to see talented unknowns in roles. There are some great actors out there that never see the light. But if I had to pick known actors (for a British production), I'm always a fan of Paddy Considine. Charles Dance would probably be good to see too. Emily Blunt. Paul McGann. Gary Oldman. Antony Hopkins would be fun as well.
...If a US production, I'd be swaying to actors such as Adam Driver, Jeff Bridges, Robin Wright, Ethan Hawke perhaps. Sam Rockwell. And it wouldn't be so out of place for someone like Mel Gibson too. Oh also Lisa Houle and Stephen McHattie (if they could bring their talents to it like they did Pontypool ...that I'd highly recommend if you haven't seen it).
How about you? Mine's just a vague list of actors who I know can act in a real/grounded way, which I think the piece would require.
@@waroftheworlds1934
I agree with your first choice to mainly cast unknown actors. But I’d definitely like to cast Tom Hardy due to his role as Alfie Solomon in Peaky Blinders, he has the range to perfectly encapsulate The Artilleryman. First as a soldier and then deluded dreamer. I really think for someone like The Artilleryman, you need an actor with a hell of a lot of conviction. David Essex’s take on The Artilleryman for example is perfect. (Which leads to me to one thing I’d definitely do, cast someone from the musical in a cameo role for fun.)
@@TGM_Productions Yes forgot Tom Hardy. He is pretty solid. Funnily, David Essex at 75 might make a good cameo these days.
Well done!
The one who was looking at the window near the electric station: what did I do to deserve this:'(
Truly splendid work! Wells would be proud I’m sure! What’s next my boy?
Thanks Cap'n. Next is more. Hopefully not too long now. It's just a lot of work, and time seems to fly by so fast these days! Keep an eye out :)
very nice pov type video
my grandpa was in that plane
finally its out yay
Cool vid. As a Martian that is true
You should make more like the martian tripods are going to like other countrys from there
Excellent! Very minor pedantic point, but at the start, as this is the RAF, it should be squadron leader, not squadron commander.
Well, that script was nothing to do with me, and I think it's a conversion of Orson Welles script for the radio play. Maybe it is US term and the one rewriting it didn't realise. I'm glad someone knows these things though :D
Have you ever thought about doing a handling machine video?
I have such sights to show you. :)
