Just a few months ago, I started watching the channel Below the Plains, a bottle digger who mostly digs in the Central US between the Rockies and the Mississippi. I love his videos because he shares the history behind his finds, with mini-bios of the businesses whose bottles he is digging up. I’ve sent him info in a potential site in Montana where my great-great-grandmother and her husband had a restaurant and hotel in the 1910s. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he’ll go there someday!

I'm in Northern Canada and we are so new here that the oldest possible find would be mid 1950's. I watch Tom Askjem digging those pits and love the way he gives the history of each item he pulls out...by the time my area is old enough to have any valuable finds they'll all be plastic junk and nothing with craftsmanship....

Ned's boyish excitement was so fun to watch as he identified bottles that had barely shown themselves in the hole. And Paige's calm demeanor and steady shoveling in that heat were impressive, too. While you were talking to Ned, Paige just kept jamming her shovel into the dirt and heaving it like an engine. We didn't see as much of Jan, but she was busy in the background providing relief and finding buttons for Paige's pocket pile.
Nic, you're really great at finding kind, passionate people to share your interest in finding the past through prospecting human detritus. I'm so glad, as always, to have found you back when you were just getting started as a RUclipsr!

Thoroughly enjoying watching this - my Mum and I excavated a very deep ash pit we could date from around 1880 to 1922. This was in Pretoria, South Africa. A lot of American and English bottles etc.

I'm from California so this was particularly interesting for me but I was wondering, how did Ned get permission to dig that deep hole in the middle of a residential neighborhood?? And how did he know exactly where to start digging without running into any power, cable or sewer lines? Those were some amazing finds but I was getting a little worried the deeper that hole got that there might be a cave-in .By the way Nicola that 100+ ° temperature is just a typical summer's day in Sacramento, glad you survived and thank you for this fascinating video.

Capers were the standard accompaniment to boiled mutton (3-4 year old sheep meat and quite large and fatty) in 19th and first part of 20th century. Preserved in vinegar, capers made a sharp tasting sauce that undercut the fatty texture and strong flavour of mutton. I love that green bottle. Great video with wonderful expert.

Thanks for the details on why capers would have come in such a large bottle. Mutton is mutton! My university used to serve it saying it was lamb. Suspiciously sliced very thin. Everyone around the campus decided they disliked lamb and prob think it to this day. I gave up trying to explain it to everyone! Thx

Only empathy for all four of you trying to get through it however you could. An interesting dig! Second, am in love with that Safe pictorial bottle. Absolutely gorgeous. So, so glad for you finding and getting to keep that one! Third, Ned wowed me with his crazy identification skills while just a bit of shape was sticking out. "Whittled Effect." I've not heard that term before. I have several lantern globes that were blown in a cold mold that have a very strong "Whittled Effect". Love the term. At 67 it's so fun to learn something new that applies to your own collecting interests. I also have a few globes with a strong swirling pattern in the glass which I was told is also caused by a cold mold.

    Hey Nicola ✨
What an excellent adventure to be part of 🍾 with fellow enthusiasts Ned, Paige & Jan on foreign shores.
Loved the intro to the video, That has to be one of the best camp's set up for the dig ever......very wise to take the ice along to stop you all melting in the heat, as well as extra shade for the at risk bottle finds.
You looked like a glamorous gold prospector, the pink wellies would have been a tad warm to wear and you needed a hat and bandana.
Ned is a true character and absolute Oracle on all things bottles, just as you are an expert on clay pipes and Bellarmine jugs, amongst so much more. Paige, who reminded me of the Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams (I had to get that mention in), had no issues getting covered in mud......Jan had the best job sifting for 'the missed gold in the tailings.
When the chinese artefacts started appearing, you had practically dug down to China......Great Team Work
If RUclips has played a big part in you travelling the globe to meet up with fellow adventurers, then what a reward for all your hard work on this channel, and shared for our enjoyment.
“When you do talk to people, share what you are. Stop focusing on all the things that you aren’t. Stop focusing on all of the physical features that you think people won’t like about you. Stop focusing on your inabilities or lack of talent. Instead, focus on those physical features that you know people already love about you. Focus on your abilities and the talents that you do have. You have been blessed with all of the above, and that makes you worth getting to know in my book.”
Stay Safe as Always....take care xx
