  • It's always fun to have a good mudlarking mystery to solve and so can you help to solve this one. I found this name plaque marked "KENNEDY" in the Thames at Strand on the Green and would love to know where it came from! It is from a boat, a barge, a train? How old is it I wonder!?
    A few weeks ago, I went mudlarking with historian and mudlark Liz Anderson. She took me to an area where I have not been before and it was great to learn so much history about the area. Afterwards, Liz showed me some of her incredible collection of Thames treasures.
    Liz writes a very informative and interesting blog which you can find at amudlarksdiary.wordpress.com
    You can also follow her on twitter at @liz_lizanderson and on instagram @lizanderson2
    If you are wanting to try mudlarking then you do need a permit from the Port of London Authority. You can find all the details you need on their website at pla.co.uk
    You can follow me on twitter and instagram @tidelineart
    Thank you for watching. comments and feedback most welcome!
    see you soon.

      Aww-from what you’ve shared of your studio you seem to organize your finds too, but your studio has a LOT more stuff in it! You’d need a whole wall of tiny drawers for all your finds. We moved over the summer and all our bottles and shards are still in boxes and haven’t been unpacked. Watching your videos inspired us to try mudlarking where we live in the US. We don’t find as many very old things as you do (late 1800s is our best so far) but I once found a clay pipe stem, and that was pretty exciting.

    Another fantastic episode, so many interesting things. The small figure in Liz's collection is a ''grotesque'' not a gargoyle. A gargoyle is a water spout, some are in the form of grotesques. Looking forward to the next Kennedy instalment.

    When you pulled the Kennedy sign, my first thought was that is was a house placard, so I'm thinking the author's proximity does explain the origins. Perhaps local news papers have pictures, in conjunction with author articles, that could confirm.

      Thank you! I am going to try to find out more and will definitely approach the local media. It just seems too much of a coincidence to me, that she lived just a few hundred yards from where I found that plaque. xx

    That first piece of bone that Liz picked up looks like a chunk of oxtail bone. Ox tails are sliced/chopped into short lengths like that for making them into ox-tail soup or braised oxtails, which are really delicious! When I buy an oxtail to cook with, it comes already cut into pieces exactly the same thickness as that bone, and 18th and 19th century cookbooks instruct you to slice the oxtail that way.

    Susan Boon here - that was lovely, thanks, Nicola. Looking forward to the ThamesTalk video. For some reason I think the plaque is more likely a place/person name or rather than a boat or a train name. It seems to announce who resides within, rather than the name of the residence itself (ie The Kennedy). Of course, I could just be making it up as I go along! Finally - you folks are much more trusting of Canada geese than we Canadians are! I've been chased by geese before -they are scary, and I give them a wide berth!

      @nicolawhitemudlark  2 года назад +1

    Another delightful collaboration - Thames Mudlarks must be some of the funest folk! Used to like to walk down there when I lived in Chiswick - in fact I lived on the river or a couple blocks from it for most of my 6-yrs in London - if I'd known then what I know now I probably would have spent more time mucking about in the muck rather than fighting the crowds on Regent & Oxford Streets! Very nice lark, Nicola & Liz.

    These vids have completely relaxed me .Nicola is so calm and interesting. I only started watching about 6 weeks ago and I'm completely hooked. I live in southend on sea which as you know is the Thames estuary. I'm going to start looking for bits at one of our beaches which is only just up the road. Keep making the vids.x

    A great offering this week, Liz Anderson is so knowledgeable and her collections are so nice and beautifully displayed. A pleasure to watch, a great place as well, hope you find out more about the Kennedy plaque, a real mystery. Have a good week Nicola.

    Thank you for including all the bits of video or the wildlife you see along the river. Adds to understanding the atmosphere and lure of the Thames.

    That was a gorgeous video, Nicola! Liz is almost as good as you, out there. Very organised. You’ll have to keep an eye out for a map/plan cupboard. What a great way to keep and display all your wonderful finds. I also really love the way you lead me into tranquility with the lovely music (presumably done by Angelo) and taking me away from my COVID blues. It works a real treat. That Kennedy sign - the first thing I thought was…. Thomas the Tank! Train - definitely, me thinks. Thanks for a lovely hour or so. Gosh I look forward to what you post!
