I’m new to rowing and so happy that I found Dark Horse rowing. For the most part I was able to follow along. Had to speed up and slow down at times but was able to finish and I wasn’t dying at the end. Thanks for the great videos.
First time rowing (needed something whilst on lockdown) - glad I discovered Dark Horse managed to follow all the way through, looking forward to trying more of the beginners workouts and getting fit and healthy
Just started back into rowing. Really enjoyed your workout, I could keep up with you except for the advert interruptions. I will definitely be doing this every day. Thank you.
Fantastic! A great start: given me confidence as I kept up and felt really good afterwards. Def repeating this daily Love dark horse rowing 👍🏻 thank you 🙏🏻
Just to answer the questions you posed at the end: 1) It was relatively easy to maintain stroke rate with you. Although a few times my rate would dip one above or below but I chalk that up to being a newbie on the rower and was easily corrected. 2) I found that at first I was using to much intensity or power and not relaxing into the rest when returning to catch. After a couple minutes I caught that and even though the pace quickened, I felt I could still recover when returning to catch. Thanks for a great warm up. I’ll be using this a lot as a warm up to practice maintaining pace.
I have done the mechanics video, and this video a dozen times. I still struggled, I could tell, somehow, it still wasn't right. TODAY it clicked! I got it! OW!!!!
Great video Shane. Thank you. I’m about to get back on the erg after a 4 year hiatus. Unfortunately at the age of 37 is suffered from Caudia Equina Syndrome. Very random (it didn’t happen whilst exercising btw). 2 x emergency spinal operations left me super cautious about my back and resulted in pretty much 4 years of sedentary lifestyle. Prior to all this I was regularly sub 23min for 6k - (22:28.4 PB) and almost sub 7min for 2k although never quite made it. I’m now 41 and it’s time for a change. Just been on holiday and discovered DH after a search about the SkiErg. I’ve watched a few of your videos; they are superb and have quite simply inspired me. You’ve got a new follower. My aim to take it steady for the first few weeks and focus on technique. Ill keep you posted 💪🏼👍🏻😬
This workout was great. I had a difficult time recovering the faster we got but I kept on Pace and only paused once for maybe 10 seconds. These guided workouts are the best.
I know Dark Horse is the best I've found on RUclips. I'm still a beginner, but these are the videos I keep coming back to. Best of luck to you and big thanks to Dark Horse.
Just discovered you when i ordered my new rowing machine. I may not have the coolest or the best machine, but i'm going to keep coming back here to learn. REally lovely videos and i'm grateful for your positivity!!! Dark Horse, indeed!
Great stuff! As a beginner/novice rower I found my stride matching your strokes fairly quickly, but it did get more difficult as we went up. Felt it more in my forearms than usual, so I tried to remember my rowing coach's (you 😁) mantra: 'push don't pull'
When I first watched the video, I thought, no way I can do this. I was wrong! I did it. I had mosquitoes biting me the whole time. Lol. If this old lady can do it kids, so can you! 😍
Loved it! This will be my new regular (or added to my other pick drill regular) warm-up! I have SO much work to do on stroke rates and I'm psyched! I'm so focused on that the 10min goes by in a blink. Great video, you're so positive! I love that and I love knowing why you ask us to do every single thing you ask us to do. Thank you!
This was a great learning experience; I never set my machine to ‘1’ prior to this; I was able to keep pace even thought I’m recently returning to rowing after 18 months away (surgeries). More please
That was awesome!! Thanks, Shane! What a great exercise in stroke rate and technique. I stuck with you on stroke rate. Ratio was good too -- your cues really helped.
Thanks again for an Awesome Warmup. As the stroke rate got faster, my body went in auto mode and no more thinking about the sequence of legs, hips an arms. Thanks again. 😀
@@DarkHorseRowing I was just bookmarking the start of the workout sorry! FYI I've used this as the warmup nearly every day since I left this comment. Thanks!
Just got back on the rowing machine after a long break. I have always loved this warmup! And thank you for taking out the adverts during the workout 👍🏻Matt
Just got my new Concept 2 and at 67 this is plenty for now. Hope to get to a good 30 minute workout in a few months. Plan on doing this on twice a day.
That was a good workout. I’ve been rowing for about two weeks now. I was able to keep up. I had to make a couple of adjustments a few strokes but kept up. Keep up the good content.
Really nice workout. I. have a rowing machine but doing 10 -15 min workout by watching you doing as well, it motivates me to go all the way. Hope to see more small workouts like this, Thanks!
Love it! This is my first week rowing. I was worried this might be too hard, but I it was no problem! I'm 59 and out of shape, but not for long! Thank you for these videos!
First time I've done the 10 minute build, and found it very helpful. I stayed with you on stroke rate, lower rates were harder to stick to, found it easier as it progresses up. Kept the breathing good, and nicely warmed up to hit a workout now.💪🏻
I just received my Concept 2 yesterday. I’m somewhat deconditioned and definitely overweight, so I did a short workout to work on my stroke. I will be doing this workout tonight. Thanks for the great information.
Just started after a couple of failed attempts this winter. I juggled around with stroke intensity but was able to stay matched on stroke for the most part. Will do this a few more times, to get familiar. Looking forward to growing with this exercise routine. Love your vibe!
This was a great workout. I wasn’t concentrating so much on trying to get a specific distance for time. This allowed me to pay attention to how my body felt in keeping posture, grip, etc. thank you!
Great workout, definitely bookmarking! Thanks for putting good stuff out there. My wife and I are new owners of a Concept 2 rower. She did this workout with you and felt just as what you described at the end, she found it easy to keep pace and she’s even 4 months pregnant. She’s a runner, but her Dr suggested something lower impact hence the new rower and now we are wondering why we didn’t get one sooner. Anyway, good stuff and thank you!
A couple comments: 1) my butt hurts a bit after this. Not a lot but I feel it. Is that what SF means by "fatigued"? Not sure I'd consider this a warm up for a workout that had rowing in it. That said, I feel warm and ready because I've found the more I warm up my row, the faster and easier it flows in kinda a bell curve type deal. I think I'd cap this at around 5 min though for a true workout warm up. When I say "workout", I mean crossfit type of workout with rowing in it. I discovered DHR after watching a vid with Heppner and SF mixing it up. Awesome content. Perfect fit: both amazing people. 2) I'd encourage people to dissipate that lactic build up (if they have it-especially in glute/upper hammy area) through the body by continuing to row for another couple of minutes after the build. Seemed like SF was gonna do that but then started closing comments and stopped. Anyhow, great video as always. Thank you
I really like the weekly workouts as there's always something new to learn. I've had my rower for over a year but I'd like to improve my technique and these sessions help to break it down so I can understand what I'm doing rather than just getting on the machine and rowing!! Thank you Shane!!
I loved this...was able to stay with the stroke rate but had to keep reminding myself about position on the seat and hips behind shoulders in the catch.
I enjoyed watching the video🤩 I have experience with the rower from Orangetheory. That’s a perfect beginner video. I wanted to hear the sounds of the concept rower and it doesn’t seem loud. It actually looks like a smooth ride. I am so tempted to buy one and workout from home-along with your workout program. You have a great sense of humor, btw😆
This workout was great! You recommended this 10 minute warm-up prior to the 5000 m i20 minute workout! I feel good. This is my 1st time doing this warm up. I was able to keep up but it was a little challenging as we got closer to the 10 minute mark I must say! Thanks great workout 🚣♀️
Outstanding workout, Shane. It does a great job building awareness of stroke rate and ratio. I was able to follow you, stroke-for-stroke, but the final minute challenged me. I'll be repeating this exercise several times per week and hope to see growth over the next month. Thanks for posting!
That was awesome, I feel like I really did the thing!! I'm a kinetic learner, so this format works for me. Also - I have a hand-me-down machine and the onboard computer doesn't work, so I'm totally dependant on following your pace and trying to remember the form tips (from one of your other videos).
Such a great exercise. I'm going to have to do it a few times to match your stroke, I'm a little inconsistent at the moment. Your videos are fantastic!
Day three of my rowing-machine-journey. I love it so far! Yesterday and the day before I followed two of your technique-focussed 10-min workouts, followed by a good 100 strokes or so. I really wanna take my time to get get acquainted with the machine and the movement. Today, again, I followed a 10min-technique-video, and then this one here. I loved every bit of it, but I also feel like i could do a little bit more! If I feel like it - do you think I sould just go for as many strokes more as I feel like? Or should I rather undershoot than overshoot in the beginnig? In any which case: Thank you for this channel! You help me getting the most out of my 1000€-machine from the very beginning! :-)
I'm still a beginner but I think that this workout is WAY more challenging than some of your longer ones ... in a good way :) This is at least the 5th or 6th time I've done this one and I just recently was able to pace myself for decent recovery during the 27+ spm.
I really liked this beginner workout! Really is helping me solidify my form and introduce me to rowing. However I tend to slip in my posture at the higher strike rates. Any tips?
Hey Shane, new to rowing, this is the best low impact exercise I have ever done. I have been watching all your beginner vids so I use the proper form without getting into bad habits. Thank you. My question is I don't own a concept 2 I have a water rower. My stroke count is right on the money with you. I was wondering how many kilometers did you row in this warm up. I am trying to judge distance of the machines, because for the 2k it takes me 12 minutes at 28 spm where you are doing 26 spm in 8 minutes. Thanks again for the channel.
Thanks for the great stuff Shane. I can follow along quite well except when we get to the last few increases can't keep up to 30 spm but ill get there. thanks again.

Excellent video. But I wonder: shouldn't the legs be fully extended before the arms kick in, or am I being too technical? Still trying to master the stroke, so advise would be appreciated
Okay, I completed it too!!! I’m a super duper beginner..But as fast and hard as I pulled I could not get my SR past 25, nor could I keep it there. Tips?
Been running for 7 years but my ankles are really starting to hurt (I weight 200 pounds). I just started indoor rowing at my gym and the cardio is insane! However, I don't know if I should be working out with weights as well because of muscle fatigue. What could you recommend? Anyways, you have a new subscriber, your channel is very cool. Greetings from Colombia
Hi. After completing this warm up, how long should we wait before commencing with the actual intended workout/race? 5min rest post warm up? 3? 10? I'm not sure and wondered if anyone could give me some pointers
Sadly had to take a 10 second breather around the 27 stroke rate start. Just was getting sloppy in my form. Not sure if I made it better but finished as strong as I could.
I enjoyed this workout. I found it hard to match your SR on the lower SR's. I know you say height isn't a huge factor in rowing but I'm 5'1" so I almost have to stop after the release to match you...or that's an excuse and I'm just still getting used to the lower rates :)
I just finished this as my first rowing workout. My technique needs work but I’m doing it

You are so welcome Jean! Love that you were able to follow along. And did you feel like your body learned something through the process?
@@DarkHorseRowing Watching you, I learned I should and can reach further forward at the catch as well as slow down the recovery.
