Karl Urban Reflects On Anton Yelchin’s Death: I’ll Never Forget His Laugh | TODAY
This clip perfectly encapsulates the emotional disconnect of the media, better than "Nightcrawler" ever could. "You and the cast were close, right? Let's talk about the loss of your friend. What did he mean to you?" *Karl responds with audible ache and emotion "alright, let's play a game!!!"
Johnny V ... but think about how great it would have been if Urban said graciously but firmly
" No , we're not going to play that game ."
Jesus Christ. He was clearly very sad about talking about Anton, and they're just like "how bout a game?"
FilmFella Daniels
yeah that caught me off guard. how callous can you be, just going “yeaaah sorry your friend died out of nowhere, anyway LET’S PLAY A GAME”
Hey your friend died, wanna play a game?!
So awkward.
Exactly what i was thinking! Poor taste much!
That's exactly what I was thinking! What a bizarre segway.
That's what happens when the only thing keeping you alive is percocet and merlot, it tends to deaden the human part of you.
hijas de la chingada XD
Anton Yelchin was one of the few rising actors who I felt really oozed classic charisma. He hasn't always played nice guys, yet he actually always came across as a stand up dude - The sort you'd identify, and root for, even if he was written in a less than sympathetic role.
That was really poor interviewing. To bring up the tragic death of Anton then go 'okay enough of this heartfelt sentiment, let's go straight to the game!' You guys do realise he was a good friend of his, right?
Kathy has always been an idiot. Never did like her.
Kinda reminds me of what happened to Martin Short on the show (think by the same person too)
i believe the word "cunts" rears its ugly head here.
Matty Thoburn vulgarity is the substitute for lack of wit.
TheHauntedMansionFan12345 It's a descriptive word in which i have applied to these particular people on this particular subject. Vulgarity plays no part here. Wit is not required in this situation. Why would i need a witty quip for these two idiots?
Wit is not needed here. At all. It doesn't suit every situation.
It's a good thing he's such a good actor, you could see him process from being really said, to shifting to "game mode' -- I am sure his brain was saying "can these two idiots really be serious???" --
Human teleprompters
delphin , I was thinking pretty much the same thing .
How tasteless of this show , truly ... surely they could have thought of a better way to end this segment .
Shocking interview. Very inconsiderate of Karl's feelings to bring up Anton Yelchin's death in such a flippant way.
Joseph Carl , I know I'm 3 years late , but the way they also wanted to play a game right after talking about his death the way they just went right into that so glibly was just so disgusting .
"We don't know how to appropriately handle grief!"
2:38 he gets choked up. So sad. :( And then they are like, let's play a dam game, arrghh.
Oooooh i almost got whiplash from that transition *rubs neck*
GOD. You can see the hurt in his eyes and then they're like "ooh, fun, a game, who cares" That was insensitive as hell.
Feels like watching a saw movie in under 5 minutes.
The transitions in interviews from asking about Anton to other questions are so cringey. Like you make him feel that pain and loss and have him talk about it then you are like "Time for a game!" Just weird.
Not only that, but how many interviews has he probably had to do where they go over and over this? Exploitative interviewers have no class.
These two terrible women are the bane of society.
That's because their stepford wives
Actually, I liked that and I liked Urban's statement about Yelchin's death. It was brief, decent and classy. It didn't revel and roll around in the tragedy of his death, which media and studios often like to do, because it generates a strong emotional response and big interest (see: Heath Ledger, Paul Walker).
The question is unavoidable, but spending too much time on it is exploitive and it basically tries to cash in on the death. It's cheap.
Urban acknowledged it and then we carried on, because that's how life is. Maybe they could have followed the question with something else than a game, but this was a refreshingly subdued approach to a celebrity death compared to the circus that usually surrounds one.
Also, you can see how he is trying not to cry, his eyes were kind of teary and they thought this was the perfect moment to play a damn game.
Anton Yelchin was 1% of this interview, at least he was 80% of the interview's description.
Shamelessly exploitative, no?
how unprofessional. Really? I mean, he died! It's not like he just left. And they're like, "Oh, okay, game time." So heartless.
I'm honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while. Much love ❤️❤️
bloody hell... the transition into talking about Anton was decently done (as anything like that could be) but the switch out afterwards.... wow.
I'm honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while. Much love ❤️❤️
So your friend died, how did that make you feel? 30 seconds up, lets play a game!?
I loved him the first time I saw him in Xena when I was 10 years old and he's still a fox!
He's such a good actor. I love him in everything he's been in
I'm honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while. Much love ❤️❤️
His impression of Bones is spot on- if I close my eyes its easy to imagine its Leonard McCoy.
"Never forget his laugh" - ignore all talking points stick to script and . . . game. . . yup.... I am sad that Anton couldn't spread his positivety any further
"So a guy died who was in your movie right? Hmm, yeah, tough. Say, wanna play a game now?" Hard to see why people give Kathy Lee and Hoda a hard time for being vacuous, superficial, vapid, bereft-of-depth examples of all that is wrong with modern media...
R.I.P Anton 😔😔😔
R.I.P. Anthon Yelchin, you will be missed.
So sad to see this interview. Like "yep, yep, mhmm, okay, yeah... alright now let's lighten the mood with this silly game that makes talking about a beloved lost cast member seem so insanely trivial!" Katie Lee and Hoda are awful. That's not the first time they've screwed up. Remember when they asked Martin Short about his wife, not knowing she passed away? Classy.
"there was a heartbreaking loss throughout filming"
"and we're going to play a game"
tf
I'm honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while. Much love ❤️❤️
If I was karl I'd be like, NO I'M NOT READY FOR A GAME MY OWN FRIEND JUST DIED!
Bad interviewing...and insensitive.
jesus...the transition from mourning to total fluff was disconcerting.
Anton's death really truly got to all of us but...we have to smile and laugh at the moments he made on screen and remember...like James, DeForrest, and Leonard...they are all just on their way to the Final Frontier :')
It was eerie because I saw Gravity not too long ago and he died in that movie and then..I don't know why that weirded me out
It still hurts. :'(
Karl Urban : " I didn't think their prosthetics were even remotely believable. "
Make Up Guy : " In the movie ? "
Karl Urban : " Nope, in the interview."
Karl is great actor... And I see, and I hope that, he's a good man.
I'm honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while. Much love ❤️❤️
Oh Anton. I cried so hard
I'm honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while. Much love ❤️❤️
can u just say i love bones and how he plays it, Karl seems to capture him just right, to the point i think of them as both the same character, same as spock, infact they are all perfectly cast, i just hope they keep going and going. It never gets out dated, keep good scripts, heart, and i will keep going to see these great movies.
Karl Urban is my god.
I'm honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while. Much love ❤️❤️
I luv this actor. Since, the first time. I saw him on film. Such a beautiful man and a great actor. That came into American cinema from other country. Very touching memory of Anton Yelchin. Who also had a huge potential. To be a great actor.
Horrific interview. Not only did the two women speak over one another, but between them, they also interrupted Karl Urban seven times in the two minutes and fifty one seconds of this video I actually watched. The transitions were so jarring & they made it painfully obvious that they had a list of topics they'd been told to hit, which means the tragic passing of their guest's friend was just another thing the execs wanted a scoop on.
I dont think they meant with bad intentions to ask to play a game after asking him about the death of someone close , they were distracting him from being sad, its usually best to switch before the person gets overcome with grief
Karl catches the best essence of his original Star Trek character
Just now found out that he is from New Zealand
When are female presenters going to stop following the same look over and over again? They all look and sound like mindless clones.
It's always sad when someone else joins the 27 club
the way he is sitting, i love you karl😘
Anton was a beautiful, talented Soul.. I will miss him, Forever
He my favorite!! Wish he was making more movies
I'm honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while. Much love ❤️❤️

I'm honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while. Much love ❤️❤️
Im so sad about his death i have loved him
Love him as Bones but Dredd is still my fav character that he does.
Agreed...much stronger than Stallone's interpretation.
I just seen The green room and Anton was fantastic in it... The big screen lost another great young talent :( . RIP Anton.
2:40 breaks my heart
Loved him in Xena back in the day.
Notice how teary he got
right at 2:50 you can catch him thinking about anton
Man, does he look like Jonathan Frakes.
Rip.. i love u ur such a great actor anton
Lol at the end...they're coolin' him down XD
He's very attractive ♥
I'm honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while. Much love ❤️❤️
If they ever decide to reboot TNG, he's gotta be Riker. He's got the look nailed.
I'm honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while. Much love ❤️❤️
Karl Urban was well chosen for Dr Bones McCoy. He also looks like DeForest Kelly . 👍
I'm honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while. Much love ❤️❤️
Glad I read the comments before watching this. Doing a press tour so soon after must have been gruelling. Colbert practically talking over Quinto first time he spoke publically about Anton...Pegg being ribbed about what a huge nerd he is on a British chat show, three days after it happened, a good sport as always but looking grey and worn...I stopped watching after that. They've all been absolute pros of course, but it's just painful to see.
Hey this is a somber moment, wanna laugh and giggle with us?!?
Rip Anton 😢🙏
He looks sooooo much like Riker.
Were they even listening when he talked about Anton?? He had barely finished, and they were like “yea, yea. Now, were gonna play a little game!”
Karl is jest another one of those well-mannered Kiwi leds. Bless hum.
It's like a news interview from Robocop or Running Man just cold
We need Dredd 2. That is all.
Is that Kathy lee Gilford on the right ? if so she had some serious face surgery she like 66
I'm honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while. Much love ❤️❤️
If I was in place of Karl I would walk out of the show🙄
I admire this actor since his role as Caesar in Xena
Mahmoud El Arch ....as weird as it sounds...i remember he got attention in the 90s when he appeared as Ceasar on Xena. I thought his presence and confidence was awesome...little would i know he would be my favorite actor in these trek movies and Dredd!
Tragic death..... Fun game.... What a contrast!
A major production studio and y'all can't get 1080p?
Kathy Lee "we're gonna play a game now ... huh
Yorktown star trek finally has a massive station
karl urban OMG
1:17 , Billy is on the street !!
Sadly only Karl Urban and Zachary Quinto were properly cast....
BOYS!
Karla&Anton
Were here💋
always knew that Karl was an awesome person, good to hear him giving well deserved respects to Anton yelchin, he will always be the one and only young KYLE REESE in soul to me
now i just hope that karl has become much more aware on how HORRIBLE jar jar Abrams truly is for EVERYTHING that he touches
Why do people think that they are so much better than everyone else in the world.
Karl was seriously manspreading. Just sayin.
He played commander Vakko in the chronicles of riddick
Those women got distracted...they wanted him BAD.
I want to see Karl Urban come back and do Judge Dredd again. He nailed that part.
He is Judge Dredd for crying out loud!!! Dude is a beast!
I get that they’re timed when doing these interviews but, they could have taken a commercial maybe...instead of going straight into a game
This guy NEEDS to play John Marsten, if they ever make a "Red Dead Redemption" flick.
Still can't believe Karl urban played skurge in Thor-Ragnarok
Theoden King stands alone
With that beard, Urban looks more like a younger Jonathan Frakes than a young DeForest Kelley.
I miss my little sunshine baby :(
I'm honored to have you as a fan, thanks for being here all this while. Much love ❤️❤️
Wish he would do a Dread tv series with netflix
"You give me the it's not you it's me routine?"
When he said “we lost” that was his friend, why bringing up the game right after? Wtf
"yeah ok enough about your dead friend we got a show to run here, HOW BOUT GAME?"
my lord the accent . . . i'm gonna go faint now
That moment you realize Karl Urban has a british accent
ummm
I will never understand why Americans think New Zealanders sound British...
??
may I suggest Google
The best ones are the people who think British people are Australian. I like to think their first thought is "British" but that seems too obvious so they go to "Australian" to seem more worldly wise.
How come the hosts on these shows are always...ya know...like that?
