  • Happy belated birthday to the original it’s a small world and it’s home, 1964-65 New York World’s Fair! I apologize for not having this video yesterday, but I just haven’t had enough time to finish on time like before. April 22, 1964, after years of planning, this World’s Fair opened its gates with many revolutionary exhibits designed to promote peace through understanding, including 4 from Walt Disney. Alongside other massive achievements in audio animatronic storytelling, GE Carousel of Progress, Illinois Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, & Fords Magic Skyway, was a boat ride unlike any other. Of course that was the Unicef & Pepsi Cola pavilion at Fair, Walt Disney’s “it’s a small world”. A delightful musical cruise saluting the worlds children, promoting peace through understanding by showing how, despite some differences, there’s too much that we share for there to be any reason for wars and other major conflicts. This masterpiece in themed entertainment is my personal favorite ride anywhere. It's still the most amazing thing ever that the whole thing was actually conceived & built in less than a year. Disney was already well into developing the other 3 pavilions when they were asked if they could build another pavilion, a boat ride saluting children across the world. Walt was determined to build this ride, so his favorite songwriters Richard & Robert Sherman wrote the song, and the many different variants heard here and in the original ride were composed shortly after by Bobby Hammack. The visuals were largely made by Mary Blair, as well as Marc and Alice Davis, Rolly Crump, Blaine Gibson, and other 60’s Imagineers. In the original version, the building was the one relatively unremarkable portion, with title and some other signage in big lettering, surrounding loading area, & not much else besides the still nice mid century modern architecture. The one amazing part of the exterior was Tower of the Four Winds in front. This kinetic sculpture was designed by Rolly Crump, though he didn’t like the final product because it didn’t move as fast as it did in the model. However, it was still very detailed and despite not being brought from Fair to Disneyland, was an inspiration behind the even more amazing & detailed facade at Disneyland since it reopened there in 1966. The one other downside to the 1964 version was that the South Pacific was not featured (probably because of limited development time), as well as the North Pole, Canada, Welcome/Goodbye, and a few other scenes added when it reopened in 1966. Despite those parts not being featured, the 1964 version was still a masterpiece, as the Blair style is evident everywhere you turn in this ride. Europe, Asia, Africa, and South & Central America are all pretty similar, but not identical to how they've always been at Disneyland (several changes in each, during & after 1966), including pretty much all of the same audio. Many countries, mainly in Europe and Latin America, were arranged differently than subsequent DL version, but there were only a few very small changes to this audio in 1966, with more afterward but largely restored in 2003 and heard today. Many of the same visuals as 1966 are also present, but some regions are also quite different. The Finale was also pretty similar to today, except that many children there were also arranged differently than DL, the walls were a different color, and a few props were removed/replaced when moving to DL. But a similar beautiful concept, and despite the sun being removed in the 90’s-00’s it was rebuilt in 2008. The audio is also the same audio that’s been used at Disneyland for the first decade and since 2003 (and WDW since 2005), the full children & adult chorus. When entering this section, I think the instrumentals were first played at a higher volume, followed by the vocals coming in shortly after. That’s because at Fair it came after Mexico, and I think that music was also used in the Mexico/South Seas transition at DL until mid 70’s, & similar music until 1993. Since this has every track, first the music is played, followed by the vocals and orchestra music. Beginning with the full audio I have many more pictures to try to get as many of the children as possible. The last Finale audio is mixed with the ducks audio, with several more pictures of various children. Then the exit spiel is played, followed by the full Disney studio chorus audio. With studio chorus are many of the same pictures from earlier, but at a much faster pace to fit the 2 minute timeframe. I also linked my previous version of this video below, along with Rick’s amazing audio tribute of this version with the safety spiels. I hope you enjoy this soundtrack!
    I do not own any of the audio or images used in this video. All audio & some images are owned by Disney, most other images owned by Daveland, Gorillas Don’t Blog, and Bill Cotter.

    25:43 Upon sailing home beneath the tower of four winds, The children, who we visited in their homelands, Assemble together to sing us a friendly farewell. Still in their traditional national costumes, They join in the universal rendition of the song. With the finale, all boundaries have been removed. The hosts of the tour are simply children of the world, who share the common bonds of friendship, imagination, courage, purity, wisdom, and understanding. It’s a World of Laughter, A world of tears, It’s a world of hopes, And a world of fears, There’s so much that we share, That it’s time we’re aware, and There is just one moon, And one golden sun, And a smile means Friendship to everyone, Though the mountains divide, And the oceans are wide, “It’s a Small World.” And a Happiest one After All. 28:13

      That's AWESOME!! I'm so happy for you, the ride, and the future of both! As you may know, many dolls, lighting, and other set pieces have fallen into a relative state of neglect over the last several years, especially compared to the early years (1960's-80's) and even the first years after the 2008 refurbishment (ending around mid 2010's). Nowadays a few dolls even have cracked mouths (some have been fixed however), and around early 2022 the Swiss bells actually swung too far, enough to damage the wood. I've seen a lot of this up close on the internet and to a lesser extent in person. When I went last February, I personally saw the primary New Zealand light flashing noticeably every second, as well as the Swiss bells actually damaging the wooden set piece from swinging too fast (I've also seen on the internet that the Swiss wood damage started in at least the 2021 Holiday overlay). And I've also seen it hasn't gotten any better since then. I'm so excited to see what you are able to accomplish with this job! I think it might have been a bit difficult moving from Ireland to California, but I'm impressed that you were able to pull it off and get this job! And an absolutely amazing coincidence that you are inspecting IASW dolls. Congratulations and good luck!

    • @benjaminroberson1924
      @benjaminroberson1924  2 года назад +3

      I don't think there's any between current DL and HKDL. The current sounds were designed to use at DL and TDL in the early 80's (replacing the smiliar, but different 1966 sounds at DL), and have been used at DL since then & even restored at TDL in 2018 after a 20+ year absence (they used Paris 92 sounds in 90's-17). The masters became a little worn after playing for most of the 80's/90's and were remastered in 2002-03. The 03 version now plays at DL, HKDL (08), and TDL (18), as well as WDW I believe at a faster pace (05), while Paris has the 1992 variant. The 1966 and 80's tick tocks are very similar, but the pitches are different in 66.

    • @benjaminroberson1924
      @benjaminroberson1924  Год назад +1

      @@skunkman9815 I honestly still don't see how. Yes, Jazz is popular in many parts of the world, but a South African Jazz scene grew much like in the US throughout the 20th century, and for some was even used as a tool against apartheid. I know there are negative/racist connotations between Jazz and African people, but these were made up by actual racists since the early 20th century and shouldn't be seen as factual. I also don't think it's racist because of the concept and message of the ride itself, which any kind of racism would clearly contradict. And since it was used as a symbol of resistance against apartheid during the mid 20th century, when this ride was first constructed, it can also be seen as a subtle symbol of what happened in South Africa around the same time, which in terms of racist ideas held by some of their population was the opposite of what this ride always preaches. It showed that while we had and have problems in the States, even in the depths of the 60's Civil Rights movements some people, including Unicef and Walt Disney in this subtle way, were willing to teach what is wrong with that kind of oppression, in an attraction that already preaches that gorgeously elsewhere. Just look at the full lyrics to the song.
      It's a world of laughter
      A world of tears
      It's a world of hopes
      And a world of fears
      There's so much that we share
      That it's time we're aware
      It's a small world after all
      It's a small world after all
      It's a small world after all
      It's a small world after all
      It's a small, small world
      There is just one moon
      And one golden sun
      And a smile means
      Friendship to ev'ryone
      Though the mountains divide
      And the oceans are wide
      It's a small world after all

    are you interested in america sings

    • @benjaminroberson1924
      @benjaminroberson1924  2 года назад +3

      I am kind of interested in America Sings. The concept of the carousel theater going through different periods in America's music history was very cool especially with the great audio animatronic cast. The music is also well done and so are the many characters and their integration. IMO, the only negative things about America Sings for me is that it replaced the even better Carousel of Progress, as well as how besides using the still remarkable Carousel theater, didn't really fit as well in Tomorrowland. Putting it on Main Street would have been a better alternative, but Disney was also losing a lot of money in the 70's so I kinda understand their thinking. Besides those 2 things, it was an extremely great show that was a good addition to Disneyland, and better than both of it's successors (Innoventions and ESPECIALLY pointless Star wars launch bay)

      @@Koreafan-xm5se Yeah building a whole land for one franchise is definitely not the best idea, especially since they still have the launch bay and Star Tours elsewhere. I still resent Star Tours for replacing Adventure thru Inner Space, but besides that it's also a well done attraction. IMO, I also really like the Rise of the Resistance attraction in Star Wars land and it's very well done, though besides that I don't care much for the land either. I can probably make an America Sings audio mix, though it may take a few months with some other things I have planned for the meantime. That they already made a full length mix in the Disneyland Forever CD is very helpful.
