Meryl Streep as Florence Foster Jenkins - Queen of the Night aria (complete)

- The purpose of uploading this video is to share Meryl Streep's incredible artistry in and as "Florence Foster Jenkins" with as many people as possible.
It is worth noting that the music was NOT pre-recorded. In other words, Meryl Streep sang "live" as the cameras were rolling. That makes her performance all the more remarkable! (The piano was also played "live" by the actor.)
An edited version of her performance of this aria is included towards the end of the film. See this and you will wish it had been included in its entirety!
Better still, see the movie or buy it on DVD or Blu-ray...which contains this as well as many other extras.
Enjoy!
meryl deserved an oscar for her ability to make it through this scene without cracking herself up.
agreed..i laughed the entire time
@Karolina Skudlik her appalling singing. terribly off key. I would have laughed the moment a first tone came out of my mouth.
@@jayweh That was exactly what happened with me...I started laughng from the piano in anticipation of the terrible sounds to come
@Karolina Skudlik its ok Karolina, you are forgiven. After all your name is spelt with a K.
EXACTLY if I were HIIIIIII I would have had to be escorted off the set
When I try to sing the Queen of the Night.
Same :D I do have a trained voice, but my upper limit is the D flat. I could do Leonora or Amelia comfortably. Never the Queen. Still fooling around with it in the shower.

That is hilarious Louis-Paul Maximilian Auguste de Lévis.

She's a better singer than I am! XD

Why not?!
"People do say you can't sing, exactly because you did sing"
@Sunday Girl And what's the point?... She did sing because she can't sing?.... She can sing as much as she like, it doesn't change the fact that she can't sing. I do that all the time myself!
Having just listened to several of Florence Foster Jenkins' recordings, I can honestly say Meryl Streep was being infinitely kind.
lol right!!! i loved florence though
You are right. You can tell that Meryl Streep can actually sing IN TUNE but deliberately made her intonation worst to imitate Florence. If you listen closely, many of her notes (except for the very high and very low) are actually in tune.
Yes I just listened to Florence singing this, and Meryl's version is SO much better. It really doesn't show how bad Florence was.
I was thinking the same thing- shes hitting too many notes and not squeezing the high notes enough
I love Jenkins- gotta be one of my favorite musicians just for her love of singing and confidence
I couldn’t agree with you more. Meryl Streep hit most of the notes right. She is a true artist, who always strives to enhance the beauty of the real world.
The funny thing is that Meryl sings very well, and you can hear her classical training in the runs.
"...you can hear her classical training in the runs."
........................................................
🤔 Hmm, you could just have easily have written *_in the ruins_* and still be right! 😏
Yes, I was thinking that despite the pitch issues, the triplets were actually very well controlled.
She apparently had to train and rehearse carefully to sing like Florence.
She won a oscar
Queen of the night(mare). I love her.

I love that Simon Helberg is legitimately playing all of that. It's real.
I was rooting for Simon to get an Oscar nomination, but that category is really tight. The Supporting Actors killed it last year.
Is he a real pianist?
I didn't know that he was a classically trained painist. I'm most impressed.
@@notesl5576 yes
Howard is my man!
I absolutely love her little hair piece and how it constantly shakes when she sings
Meryl Streep performed this as Florence Jenkins Foster beautifully! 👏🏼
Madame Streep did such an amazing job of singing badly, to make it sound *almost* good. That's kind of an ethical challenge - to a trained singer. Bravo!!
vladp That's the thing though! Florence could hit about a third of the notes absolutely perfectly, but the others were violently off.
Yes, which had its own merit.
In dramatics, it is very very difficult to produce an extremely off-key sound! Kudos to Meryl for making it appear so easy!
Ona spiewa jak pies muj pies spiewa spiewa
Absolutely - chapeau to this masterstroke to almost hit the notes, I think this is far more difficult than hit the right notes! In this height!
Jenkins herself sounded worse than Streep. Meryl sang too many notes in tune!
Serena60 because she’s good at singing 😝😝😝
Truth
Meryl Streep sang so good in reality, she practiced so hard to be role as Florence Foster Jenkins
No, actually vice versa. Have you watched the documentary about the real Florence? She wasn't nearly as bad as Meryl exaggarated. She was just flat and bit out of tune, like a karaoke opera.
@@meryatathagres1998 no, actually you can listen to her performance of this on youtube and it is pretty awful. Much worse than karaoke. We have been laughing at her since I heard her in music school decades ago.
I just heard on an interview that the audience didn't know what was going to happen and the reactions were all real. 😆
this is the best thing ive ever seen lol

that's brilliant! only makes me love it more!

how can anyone not notice howard wolowitz's piano skills!wow!
You mean Simon Helberg. He is the actor playing Florence's accompanist...and he actually played the piano in the film, while the cameras were rolling!
Gilliam Robles I dont watch that show.
Yes! What a beautiful skill.
You're cool.
Hard to find somebody with great acting skills AND great musical skills. This movie has two people like that with Meryl and Simon.
When she was young Meryl Streep studied voice with the legendary Estelle Liebling, who also taught Beverly Sills. In the midst of this brilliant awfulness you can hear a few notes showing how good Streep's voice is. And all the numbers in the film were done live - no lip-synching. Simon Kellberg's piano playing is also live.
John Mitchell that explains it- her mouth shapes are correct and the quality of the tone is quite good, not to mention she has a very decent range! She could have been a legit opera singer for sure.
When the pianist slows down for her 😂💀
And speeds up during the tutti.

Hi Siobhan how are you doing??
Ms. Streep's performance was unbelievable. This is just one example of why she is one of the best actresses in the world.
It takes an extraordinary amount of skill and control as a performer to sing this consistently, aggressively badly! This is one of my favorite Meryl Streep performances.
Hi Aiya how are you doing??
She wasn’t singing live in that scene, it was recorded in a studio..
@@UltimateFashionist@UltimateFashionist Nope, she was performing live because she wanted real reactions from the many extras in the audience, and there were no rehearsals, the director called action, and she appeared on stage and did that; the pianist is playing live as well. The reactions in the audience are very real, they were caught by surprise.
my dogs were barking at this haha... communication exits in the animal kingdom for sure
Billy Young I thought she sounded she like a dog at times. Otherwise she sounded like a rubber squeeze toy. Other times she had an odd chesty, hoot-y sound.

We know that Wolfgang M. had a great sense of humor..
And the fact that he deliberately wrote this to let his sister-in-law Josepha Hofer show off her talent and range makes me laugh even harder. =)))

It’s actually difficult to sing poorly when you can sing snd meryl can sing in real life
Ms. Streep actually studied with the esteemed Estelle Liebling who was Beverly Sills' teacher.
it takes a good singer to re-create pitchy and tone deaf voice of Ms. Jenkins, not to mention it's Aria..
@@힐만94 exactly my point
Seriously! Trying to be bad is harder than being actually good. The first notes, and I was like...she's better than Flo, oh no...botch it up, Meryl! It looks like she was having so much fun, though :)
@@RibbinOpinion Well, she aced it. She put her training in music to good use!
knowing that people call diana damrau the "meryl streep of opera" makes this scene a lot funnier
@M W ugh what I would give to see that
I love that this thread exists
That people think that's an apt comparison shows how little the general public knows about opera. Maybe acting, too. Meryl Streep is a successful actress with many excellent performances to her credit, but talk of her versatility is oversold, and she's often just decent with a reputation that no longer gets scrutinized. Diana Damrau, though, represents the ultimate zenith of what the human voice can achieve. She is not just several but many steps above Meryl Streep in comparison of the achievements of the two in their respective arts.
@@kevinr.m.richardson812 I think they meant that they look similar 😬

This cracks me up no matter how many times I watch it. Meryl Streep is amazing.
If I can rate Jenkins's performance from 1 to 10,
Skills in singing: 3
Confidence: 10
Although she thought she was good, I wish I had this kind of raw courage to just DO IT.
minus trpka she was a prodigy pianist as a child. So i presume she can't hear that bad and be so talentless. I think it was because of the mercury
@Lynda Anthony because that's how you are defining it. If you're gonna say something bad from a thread of a good vibe comments why not just start your own comment so we can just ignore it. It's like you just came in a room with happy people and kill their vibe. It's rude so gtfo.
bit more like raw syphilis , damaged her hearing as well as her mind, so we don't know if she took her self seriously, or was living in a world of her own making, in a cloud of arsenic and lead buildup in her system..
act listening to original florence and then coming back to meryl -
meryl has so much more resonance and diaphragm strength XD she can't completely mask that XDDD
You have to remember the quality of the recording you listened to with the real Florence. You can probably hear the essential quality of the timbre, minus some of the upper partials, but not the full resonance.
I just love that not only is like every note wrong and sounded like a squeaky toy, but she's just mumbling a bunch of vowels pretending it's German lmao
Even tho sarastro is a name i don't think i heard her say it even once, which honestly is the cherry on top in my opinion
@@b.d6642 she says a...sarastro-like sound lol

is this even supposed to be the german version? I'm german, and I didn't recognize one syllable although I know some lyrics of that aria. :D

What an acting masterpiece of Merryl Streep. Perfekt!
Breaking news: Mozart imagined this kind of performance as "freak of nature" that Queen of the Night should be, but... he never imagined that through generations this piece would evolve to the beauty that it is nowadays.
I'm really amazed at the musical gifts of both actors. Florence is an immortal legend among us classical musicians. She has the luck to be able to live her dream... and our worst (just musical) nightmares, haha!
Diane Damrau left the Royal Opera House after seeing this masterpiece
Oof 🤣😂😭
Oh yes but Diana's queen of the night is still the best
Edda Moser, no Damrau.
Oddly enough, the staccato technique was pretty spot on. Even the longest phrase didn't lose breath.
I thought it was wonderful that Meryl Streep sang live instead mouthing to a recording. You got the genuine reaction from the audience that way.
Streep’s interpretation of Florence Foster Jenkin’ s “ Der Hølle Rache” is nothing but ingenious. Sound quite exactly like the recordings, parallel to Streep’s skillful play. Great performance! I was to see it three times, were laughing my hiney off the first attempts...thank you!
She's found out how to talk to chihuahuas
That’s literally what I thought when she started doing the staccato! Lol!
Loooool
HAHAHAHHAHAHAH I CANTTTT
I just can't even with this comment. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
LMAO
I love how the pianist is trying to speed her up to the correct speed😂
In the "woah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah" She sounds like a barking chihuahua haha. Loving it Meryl! (:

She sounded BADLY BEAUTIFUL! 🌹
Whenever I need a good hearty laugh, I watch this clip. Those awful trills get me every time. No matter how many times I watch this, those trills make me laugh.
This is me if I had chance to sing on Broadway
Ahahaha! What about Odette's humming voice while playing?
Ha you wish! You can't outwit Meryl duh 😝
I cry with laugh! Meryl Streep is wonderful!
Barbara Gaweł you have to listen to original recording
She is brilliant, but I think this could have been even better had she tried to learn the words a bit.
Edit: I just realised she sang it exactly as Madame Jenkins did, even the made-up words, wrong tempo and pauses and the final staccato (which doesn't really exist). This has made it all much more impressive
Juan G She is singing the aria in French, as did many coloraturas in the early twentieth century.
@@jasonhurd4379 : She is actually singing the aria in the italian translation as the real recording of Foster Jenkins, but really pronounce badly the text also as the real Jenkins, for exemple the word "Ciel" is mispronounced and sound like french: But the italian text is the following:
Gli angui d'inferno sento bene al petto
Megera, Aletto son intorno a me
Svelga al fellone, Pamina il core,
Se il reo non muore,
Fliglia mia non è,
Ti lascio, t'abbandono,
Tua madre più non sono
Paventi il mio furore,
Se non osa il crudel, Sarastro, Sarastro
al fellone Pamina svelga il core,
Ciel, Ciel, Paventa il mio voto,
Ah! Ascolta Ciel!
She is actually supposed to pronounce badly the text as the real Florence Foster Jenkins did! Of course Meryl Streep could have the words properly in italian!
The real question is why one would sing this aria in any other language than German.
@@MissCaraMint well many operas were translated, like Tosca in french and Medea in Italian 🤷🏻♂️
My favorite line from Amadeus: "Who knew such music was even possible?" LOL!

Apparently she found it incredibly hard to destroy the song to this degree. They had to repeat over and over..
Meryl is PHENOMENAL and PEERLESS !!!

I've known about Florence Foster Jenkins since my classical concert pianist dad played her recordings for me when i was about 15. Simon Helberg was spot on in his portrayal of Jenkins' incredible pianist Cosmé McMoon. If you listen to the recordings, he never loses her no matter how off tempo she goes.
I am amazed how well Meryl Streep comes to sounding like Florence. And I don’t know why listening to this makes me happy.
Lmao Streep is such a good singer that even when she's purposely trying to sound bad, she still sounds decent haha
Not if you are familiar with the original piece :P She is a great actress, though, and she can probably sing really well if she wants to :) Wonderful movie!
Evelina Rønneseth Ha oh, I was very familiar with Florence long way before the movie. Meryl still sounds nice when she sounds bad haha.
I meant Mozart as how he originally wrote it :) But yes, Meryl Streep totally nailed Florence! I heard Florence sing this piece, and Streep sounded quite similar :)
Evelina Rønneseth TBH Meryl sounded better than Florence
I bet she listened to Florence sing it over and over to get the right pitches and screeches.

I have to say this is one of my favorite scenes ever. I laugh every time. Streep is hilarious and just brilliant. Love the piano, the audience, and Hugh Grant behind the curtain. Bravo to all!
I am this old when I realized that we all need this kind of performance once in while.
I’ve recently seen the film for the first time. Meryl Streep has some real talent if she can sing off key perfectly. Also, I cried at the ending. It was so heartbreaking💔
Literally just got this song from iTunes , I couldn't help it
Bravissimo, Meryl and Simon!

My one and a half year old grandson is absolutely infatuated with this. He wants to watch it over and over. Totally focused. It's amazing. I'm going to watch the entire movie with him. Meryl Streep is one of the best. My grandson loves listening to actual Florence Jenkins too. Actually I never was interested in Opera until I discovered Florence.
Meryl is the queen of acting. Everything from her facial expressions to her posture in any of her performances.
As a cover of Florence, this is spectacular!
Das ist wunderbar~!
From Mary Fisher to Julia Child to Florence Foster Jenkins, Meryl Streep can do it all!

I personally adored this whole movie with its stunning actors and visuals. Kudos to Meryl's terrible singing and perfect portrayal as Florence Foster Jenkins.

She actually sang it light years better than FFJ did. Regardless, it takes SO much skill to be a good singer (like you can tell Meryl is) and sing this badly. Beautifully done! :)
1:02 Now she sounds like one of those rubber toy penguins you squeezed to get a sound out of
I think its wonderful the way her voice not only wanders off key, eventually it leaves the building and ends up selling hot dogs on the sidewalk.
'Her performance at Carnegie Hall was on October 25, 1944. Guess who performed the day before? Frank Sinatra. A tough act to follow, even if you can sing... at all...
I seriously would like to hear an autotuned version of this.
Meryl is sublime and so was Florence. Incidentally one of the top A's is almost in tune here - MUST be a mistake! I loved it .Thank you.
You're welcome! And I know which note you mean :-)
Yes I noticed it too :)
She is so good at being bad, I love her!
Streep deserved that standing ovation. She sang it live and gave a brilliant imitation of the true awfulness of FFJ.
This is historically wrong, the audience was enthusiastic. They understood that Florence Foster Jenkins had a great heart and wanted them to spend a pleasant moment in spite her vocal performance was bad. The performance in Carnegie Hall has not been recorded but photos show the audience.
I just watched two documentaries about Florence Foster Jenkins. Both state that members of the audience would clap, whistle, and cheer to cover up their laughter.
Funnily enough, Meryl Streep sings more in tune (as Florence) than Florence did!!
Extraordinaria interpretación de Merryl Streep.
Florence tambien extraordinaria pues cantó sin tener condiciones sólo su entusiasmo. La película es una joya

That poor, dear lady. All these years later and she's still being laughed at.
Perhaps, but very few if any people who laughed at her in her lifetime are long gone and will never be remembered as she still is. So in a way, I think Florence got the last laugh.
Many more people admire her for her courage I think. Like Tommy Wiseau- he wanted to make a movie by hiw own terms and he did it, and now he is a legend. :)
